[IRCA] MW conditions from Masset 9 to 12 March 2013

2013-03-12 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Despite the reports from DXers in the south, my long weekend in Masset
wasn't quite so dismal. I wouldn't say that I heard anything astonishing,
but it did turn out to be a very solid Asian weekend. Not a hint of TA
activity at all. TPs were solidly Asiatic, with the Koreans blasting in
the strongest, followed by the Japanese, Chinese, and Russian MW (and LW)
transmitters. Not a hint of India, nor Bangladesh. Vietnam was well heard
on 675 on one day at least. 1575, as others reported was booming in most
of the time. Nothing heard cochannel here, though, so I wonder whether the
AFN Japanese are still there or not. Also, nothing from Radio Farda
either. As always, I have a good selection of Perseus wav files. Sunday
morning was the best, in my view. Saturday the weakest, and the other days
in-between. I used only a single NW BOG of about 700', and 2 ALA-100 close
to right angles to each other. 73 to all,Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

[IRCA] Alberta TP for 12 March 2013

2013-03-12 Thread Nigel Pimblett
This morning I seemed to experience what the guys out west saw
yesterday. VOA on 1575 was fairly good at times between 1320 and 1350,
but that was all the TP audio to be had this morning. Quite a few
other carriers, but none overly strong, and a number seemed of DU origin
rather than Asiatic.

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] [AMFMTVDX] DX Test most of us missed

2013-03-12 Thread Chernos Saul
I have the engineer's name (it's actually below, so you all have his name) and
will be in touch. I would also never mind at all if anyone else - a.k.a. you
who are reading this - simply took it upon themselves to contact an engineer,
thank them, and let them know that something could be arranged for later on
with more notice - and a lot more reports! And y'all know we can make morse
code, tones, sweeps and the like. If they're really and truly afraid of
receiving mounds of reports - well, don't offer that unless it's a deal-breaker
not to, but we can do that too.

If EACH ONE OF US contacted three stations...next season could be a barn-burner.

Want a sample letter you can adapt to suit a particular station/situation? Or a
helping hand to walk you through the process? You know who to ask.

Here's a DX test we probably all missed:

Mar06 08:02 DX TEST THIS FRIDAY NIGHT! 1450 WWXL Manchester, KY will transmit
morse code from 10:30 PM to 11:00 eastern. Per station engineer Jody Ritchie

I checked this morning in advance of a planned trip there in a few days.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] UNID on 1220 Ideas?

2013-03-12 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks Paul & Kaz. I set the timer to run the rest of the night, so
maybe I got an ID, but the signal is very elusive for running 5 KW. When
I hear it, it sure does not sound like 5 KW as it should be more common
with WHKW. WHKW is 50 KW, but sends little signal West. But it sounds
like KDXR 1480 Gooding ID. They are on 5 KW, then they are not, then
they are. Sitting on 1220, I am bound to get that ID in time. However, I
fight the off and on over mod from KVAS 1230 Astoria 7 miles away. Their
mod varies from day to day. At times the loud C&W splatters all over the
place. For some reason, since I left the Eastern Bev unterminated I have
a lobe to them on 1230. Strange. I also extended the beverage another
20-30 feet to the last fence post. But overall the beverage does work
better and it is more directional to the East on frequencies overall. I
guess you win and lose a bit here and there. But I will keep sitting on
1220.

[IRCA] TP 12 Mar; Victoria version

2013-03-12 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
An odd morning. Not any really good signals, but a few "spotlights"
. Listened around 1330, 1400 and 1430UT approximately, while
keeping an eye on ye olde DX Fishbarrel at other times.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

asking a bit much I'm afraid

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man talking JJ, at 1426UT all alone on the band (barring domestics)
1575 VoA man in SE Asian language at 1335UT, best  of the morning;
lower band signals were better later

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti man in FF 1406UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

531 brass band mx 1337UT, and certainly not // 594 which had an
overexcited announcer (sports?)

774 woman talking 1429, too weak for any guess at language

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

best wishes,

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-12

2013-03-12 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Mid-March mediocrity settled in again to the band this morning as only three
Asian big guns (972-HLCA, 1566-HLAZ and 1575-VOA) managed to produce poor to
fair audio here from 1415-1510 UTC. Sunrise enhancement didn't really enhance
anything, and 1575-VOA failed to receive anything like yesterday's turbo boost.
It was almost dreary enough to make a hard-core TP-DXer consider calling it a
season and "getting a life" (like Nick says)-- at least until tomorrow morning.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] UNID on 1220 Ideas?

2013-03-12 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
This is WSLM... "Playing The Greatest Music of All Time" sounds exactly
like the slogan one of the satelitte fed CLASSIC HITS services would use.

WSLM is known for not powering down, despite their claim they do.. or that
they do most of the time and the only time they don't is when someones
working on it.

For what it's worth, WSLM has a 9KW LPTV signal, WHAN-LPTV. And despite the
owners insistance that its on the air, a friend of mine was within 1000
feet of the tower.. and couldn't get a lick of signal from it.

[IRCA] UNID on 1220 Ideas?

2013-03-12 Thread Patrick Martin
1220 UNID playing We Are The Champions by Queen, then into promo for
Breakfest in Ameica featuring SuperTramp at 0540 EDT. Then fadeout, fade
back in with Ventura Highway by America at 0550 EDT, followed by
"Playing the Greatest Music of All Time", then another fadeout.
3/12. (PM-OR)

Drake R8
1500' Eastern Beverage

Two different stations? It kind of sounded like a Classic Rocker WSLM?
and a NOS station? Any ideas? At least I got some slogans. QRM from a
Rel station, presume The Word, WHKW as usual. Plus there was an Unid C&W
mixing at times (KDDR?) and also some Sports station, but I could not
get it well enough to tell which network it was running. But what a
jumble of weak signals. Too bad the A&K weren't 0 & 0.
Thanks.
