[IRCA] TP 31 Aug; Victoria version

2013-08-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
This morning showed the signs of the little geomagnetic upset...very
little before 1300UT, not even carriers, and what there was afterwards was DU.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

612 4QR got to this level with female folk singer 1314UT; ID'd by
parallel w/891

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti man in FF 1304UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

567 woman talking 1331UT (NZ?)
594 3WV woman singing, faint, but //612 1326UT
774 3LO woman talking, too weak on its own for any hope of ID, but
//612 at 1312UT

891 5AN female folk singer w/acoustic guitar //612 1313UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary"audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

1566 TWR Benin coming in surprisingly well over the terrible
thunderstorm noise here. English announcements and now into a song with
consistent audio for the last few minutes. No other TAs noted right
now, but 783 was in last night with occasional audio at this time (0330
UTC). This might be my best copy of 1566 to date.

Great Jim! They are still going strong here, over 30 minutes now with
steady audio with very little fade. TA's never come in like this here,
so this is a bit exciting, and the local music a little bit ago was
awesome to hear.

Good job guys.

Sometimes there's high end openings to Africa when nothing else is coming in
nearly as well. These tend to correlate with sunrise near the xmtr, but this is
quite a bit earlier than that. When this is is that well, look for VOA Sao Tome
thru phased WCKY as they are from the same general area and also high end.

783 Mauritania has been all night for at least two years I think. I can't get
them in IL as I am 14 miles from WBBM but they aren't hard when using Phased
BOGs at my WI Lake Michigan Bluff House. Their SW // goes off overnight. They
play continuous mx overnight which is basically Arabic with African flavoring.

There used to be more high end Africans on the air to try for in cx like that
but most are gone.

1088 Angola while not high end, has put carriers in my IL or WI places before
but nothing that I felt was better than 10 dB S/N too low for audio.

2013-08-31 Thread James Renfrew
You're right, not too many targets in Africa. I've had a handful over the
years: Guinea 1403 (so long ago that I have no memory of it but it's in my
log book. Egypt 774 and 819, Algeria 531 and 549, tentative Morocco 1044,
Canaries 621 and 747, Azores 693, Libya 1053 and 1251, and Sao Tome 1530
(when WCKY was off some years ago, mixing with Vatican Radio). I figured
I'd get Benin at some point, but I never thought it would be in August!

It's still there for me.? Steps I took to get in just now:
Open Chatzilla (my chat client - attached to Firefox)
type "/server irc.starchat.net", then wait the several seconds for it to
load

type "/join #mwdx" ... and there it is. :)
I also have AndChat on my Android phone, and it has an entry I can tap on
to open the server.? (I don't remember if I have it set to auto-join the
chat or not, though.)
