Re: [IRCA] Fwd: Amazing, Adaptable AM Radio

2013-11-15 Thread Mike Hawkins
Per Wikipedia, XWA started experimentally on 01 Dec 1919 and began regular
programming on 20 May 1920. KDKA may have still been using 8ZZ on 02 Nov
1920 when they broadcast election returns. It was listed as unclear
whether their license had been received by that date. KQW was not licensed
until 09 Dec 1921, but had been using experimental calls since 1909.

[IRCA] TP 15 Nov, Victoria version

2013-11-15 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not much DX between 1300 and 1500UT this morning, and then a brief
sunrise lift 1500UT. Not as good as yesterday, not saying very much.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

back in the bucket

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

even this was asking too much

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

774 JOUB man in JJ 1455UT, earlier, heard DU EE man followed by
American EE woman; not fair to the DXer //828, so assumed JOUB, as no
other DUs, bar Tahiti carrier (?) were heard

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

594 JOAK pips creeping through 1500UT, man talking, maybe JJ
747 JOIB also pips at 1500UT
828 JOBB man talking in what sounded like DU EE 1427UT //774
972 woman talking 1455UT, couldn't tell language, possibly HLCA.
1566 HLAZ assumed with woman talking 1456UT CC inflection? man and
woman talking 1501UT also sounded CC

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

738 1287 1323

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Perseus WAV Files for Download - LW MW at Rockworks #4, Oregon

2013-11-15 Thread Mark McCarthy

Guy,

Thanks for posting these files. It was a pleasure listening to such a low
noise level compared to here in the city.
Some of the signals were stunning. CYT was so big and clear I thought it
was local at first.

I mostly looked for Alaskan NDBs, but found a couple from the West.
I haven't heard a few of these in years here.
I didn't log the Canadian or lower 48 beacons.
There is also a tantalizing carrier on 437 kHZ that I was hoping was the
Russian beacon OG, but I couldn't dig out any trace of either sideband.

I am certain I missed some.

Thanks again,

Subject: [IRCA] Perseus WAV Files for Download - LW MW at Rockworks
#4,Oregon

Below are links to four, 458mb files of the frequency range 150-1750 kHz
which I recorded at my recent Rockworks Cliff #4 DXpedition to Oregon.

Local sunrise during the DX trip was within a minute or two of 1500 UTC,
when many Pacific time zone domestic stations boost their output to daytime
power, with the resulting increase of QRM to Trans-Pacific signals.

These links are in pairs-- WAV files from Top-of-the-Hour, 1459:30-1500:30
UTC on November 2nd and 3rd, and a few minutes earlier from 1452-1453 UTC
on November 2nd and 3rd. These two recordings made a few minutes prior to
local SR have generally less splatter because locals/regionals have not yet
boosted their output.

I haven't tuned the long wave range of these recordings... I'm sure theres'
some interesting Pacific and Asian LW DX to be found on them!

My apologies for the annoying video ad Capcha's security for download of
these files; the Mediafire.com host requires watching a short video ad
before you can enter a code and proceed with download. In the future I may
move everything to my Box.com account to avoid this.

A few years ago I published a Perseus SDR blog (Five Below) about
tropical bands and MW DXing with this receiver. A popular section of the
blog was links to Perseus WAV files recorded by DXers around the world.

These files are still online and available to anyone who is interested.
They are organized in sub-folders by geographical region of the DXer. The
entire folder of files (93 WAV recordings) is located at:
