Hi Craig,

I checked out D Link and found a great review on the DIR-605L and I found one
on Amazon.com for $34. I ordered it tonight. Thanks for the advice.

Re: [IRCA] Wifi Router (OT)

2013-12-03 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Patrick-

I use this (now discontinued) GDI-IR1000 model:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/606504-REG/Grace_Digital_GDI_IR1000_Wireless_Internet_Radio_GDI_IR1000.html

It's still available for less than $100, but so are some newer models like
the GDI-IR2600.

I see from the BH Photo-Video link above that my model now has Pandora
streaming, so I guess it's time I do another firmware update for the radio!
The 2600 model (and I presume other newer ones) have added iHeart Radio to
the choices of audio sources.

The question comes up occasionally: why buy a separate box for streaming
Internet audio when you can just listen on your computer or mobile phone?
Well, I do use my computers and mobile phone for Internet audio, but
there's something satisfying about a stand-alone device that seems more
like "a real radio". I like the Grace Digital's large knob used for making
selections (turning of the knob) and confirming choices (press-click
inwards on the knob). The Grace Digital models all have quite decent
built-in speakers so they are fully self-contained.

The station choices through the Reciva database alone are vast, and are the
only way to still hear some broadcasters that have left shortwave and/or
medium wave, or are difficult or impossible catches on MW. For instance,
one of my favorites on Internet radio is Radio Cook Islands, which I
haven't heard over the air since I visited that country years ago. I'm
still hoping to catch them on 630 kHz during a coastal DXpedition some day
(I know you even have one or more QSLs from them on 630 :^)

BTW, an excellent app for Internet radio on mobile devices is the TuneIn
Radio app. Highly recommended!

Re: [IRCA] Wifi Router (OT)

2013-12-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Guy,

Thanks for your detailed reply. I went and looked at several of the newer Grace
models like the 2600 and I have found quite a few complaints, like many will
not connect to a persons wifi network or the sensitivity of the Grace receiver
is not good enough to pick up the wifi signal a few feet away and the signal
level will vary all over the place. Also the issue with the streaming is
sometimes poor with constant buffering. I did find a Logitech Squeezebox unit
that got high ratings, but it did not state if it used to Receiva website. The
Logitech also has the ethernet connect, if I wanted to use it. Have you had
any trouble with your 1000? Maybe some units are better than others. Several
other people have highly suggested the Grace radios.
I often will listen to the radio when I go to bed. The super radio works
well, but the signal fades and I am very happy with internet radio and like
you, having a radio to listen is more to my liking than the laptop. I have
ordered the D Link router and I should have that in a few days. Thanks again.

I have a WiFi radio -- that is a table top - that I use every couple of
weeks for a few minutes here and there.

Most of the time it works - some of the time it doesn't. I cannot depend on

the unit -- it is at least 3 years old.

I have never depended on the internet for radio communications of any kind
- because you are one
fiber optic cable away from complete isolation from the rest of the World...
which might explain why I have over a dozen analog radios.

I have a couple of Logitech Squeezebox stream radios. I use it for some of

Are we going to have a StreamDX anything soon? (grin)

Colin,

I will always DX and have analog radios, but I enjoy listening to the radio
lying in bed at night and an internet radio should work fine for that. I do not
DX the internet. hi. I have a big satellite dish and I do not DX with that
either, even though I still get tons of radio and tv services around the world.
What type or internet radio do you have? There is always the option of just
using my laptop to listen to the radio in bed too, but I like a radio.

Hi Patrick,

I've not had any trouble with my Grace Digital unit other than some
chronically slow-to-connect sites which act the same when I try to stream
them on my PC or mobile phone; but I see what you mean by a number of poor
reviews and comments.

Craig's comments reminded me that I too have read good things about
Logitech's unit. Perhaps that's the one to shoot for.

I'm with Colin when it comes to choosing a "regular" radio for any
important communications. I use the Internet radio or other streaming
source just for entertainment. Besides, what DXing fun is there with
streamed stations?

It does work well. For DXing, I did set a private stream of the SDR-14 I
had in New Bedford which is 30+ miles from my house. By connecting to the
computer there by PC Anywhere I could tune the SDR receiver and hear the
audio by the private stream. I think I did mention a specific reception so
others could hear it. A private stream can be very useful.

For entertainment, my personal private stream plays around 4,500 different
songs that I personally like. It also plays top of the hour recorded NPR or
BBC news at xx:10 after each hour. No commercials, nothing plays I don't
like. In many ways it's far better than any local or DX stations for
entertainment.

take your enhancement where you can find it

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

738 passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

774 man talking JJ inflection 1355UT
972 woman talking, then mx like a string quartet, then talk again 1351UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary"audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

828 1566...that's it...

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] TP 3 Dec, Victoria version

2013-12-03 Thread Bruce Portzer
My SDR recordings weren't much different from what Nick reported. Today
I had fragmentary audio on 774 and 1566 at around 1300. Also traces of
real or imaginary audio on 747 and 972. I wondered for a while if I had
my antenna switch in the wrong position, but everything was set up
correctly. It was just a bummer of a morning for TPs.

Believe it or not, there was a touch of audio on the recordings, but

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

738 Tahiti female vocal mx 1415UT, and into man in FF as level dropped
slightly, hung in for the better part of 10 minutes. Got to take your
enhancement where you can find it
