Not heard here at the 0100 ELT test, but was heard twice during the evening, at
2302 ELT and 0001 ELT.  Both receptions were faint, as you might imagine, but
the 2302 was the slightly stronger of the two.  Thank goodness for Morse Code,
because it's the ONLY way I would have ever heard WKAL.  Easily my best catch
on MW from any QTH since getting the March 6, 1995 DX test of WKBR-1250 in New
Hampshire while I was living in Iowa City.  THANK YOU, BOB CARTER!  :)

No WKAL here just north of NYC.

I did hear the 1720 pirate.
What an odd frequency to pick.
If they used 1710 (like everyone else) people would have heard them a lot more.

WKAL 1450 DX Test was logged here in Central Alabama! At first, I
thought my ears were playing tricks on me, but I reviewed the
recording--and there it was at 04:01 UTC. Slow CW and a partial voice ID
in the first five minutes after TOH! My first GY from that far North!

The 1720 KHz pirate could not be heard at all, though I sure tried. Love
logging TIS, beacons, pirates, and other odd ball stations on MW. I've
even got five Talking House transmitters in my log on 1610. One was in
Cullman, AL about 40 miles from here!

Thanks for all involved with the test!

TP conditions on Saturday were similar to Friday's, so I didn't put

Today was definitely much worse. HLAZ-1566 and Taiwan-1557 struggled.
There were a few other carriers on the expected channels, but little if
any audio.

I think the mid-winter normality is here.

[IRCA] IBOC/HD on AM [ FIRST TIME LISTENING EXPERIENCE FROM A DX'er ]

2013-12-15 Thread Les Rayburn
My truck is in the shop, so today I ran a few errands in my wife's car.
It turned out to be an eye-opening experience for me. Her car is a 2013
Ford SUV, equipped with an in-dash everything system. That includes a
radio equipped with AM/FM/Sirius, etc. On past trips, I had listened to
IBOC on FM...most of the stations in the Birmingham market use it to run
a second channel of programming.

Today, I happened to be alone in the car, and decided that I'd listen
to noise as my kids like to call it, by checking some of the
semi-locals on AM. After a bit of tuning around, I hit the scan button
on the radio. And the radio stopped on WYDE 1260 in Birmingham. They
were running some nonsense paid program (glorified podcast) that seem
common here these days. For a minute or so, it was the usual sound with
good signal and some powerline noise as I drove down the road.

Suddenly, the radio turned to crystal clarity...near FM in nature. Good
fidelity and no detectable noise at all. I looked down at the radio, and
noticed that the HD indicator was on above the station frequency,
indicating that IBOC was engaged. As I drove around, the IBOC signal
jumped in and out, as I was about 30 miles from downtown Birmingham.
Curious, I stopped in a good location where the receiver had a steady
lock on the signal.

I've heard the hiss of IBOC stations on my Icom receiver in the shack,
and looked at the annoying hash on my SDR-IQ display too. Like most
DX'ers, I've cursed stations running IBOC at night, as their splatter
made it difficult or impossible to DX on adjacent frequencies. But I had
never actually heard an AM station running IBOC before.

I continued the scan looking for other stations running HD material, and
found only WAPI 1070 AM running the system. The radio gave a brief
visual indication that WJOX 690 AM might also be using it, but it would
never achieve a lock.

The experience was very interesting. From a DX'ers point of view, it's a
no-brainer. IBOC is bad. It causes interference, and doesn't have the
fidelity of the C-QUAM Stereo system of years ago. But from a listeners
point of view, it might have some merit. If I were strictly interested
in program content, such as sports talk radio, and that content was only
available on the AM band, I think HD-Radio would appeal to me.

The sound is much clearer, and the noise from powerlines, auto impulse
noise, etc. virtually disappears. That being said, it seems that the
technology has failed to achieve critical mass in the marketplace. But I
can finally see and hear why so many people thought that the technology
had merit.

It's been a bit of a day here, and looks to continue, so I haven't
had a chance to listen to the recording. But a quick look at the
signal strength recorder says that it would be wise to let Bruce do
the heavy lifting, and simply verify it was definitely worse than the
last two days. Nothing really until a very poor sunrise lift,
when 1566, 1557 and 1593 struggled with barely there audio, 1593
ID'd as CNR1 with // 6125 at 1511UT.

best wishes,

[IRCA] WCIT 940 DX Test tonight

2013-12-15 Thread Chernos Saul
Haven't heard otherwise... so assume it's on. I knew it was in the works awhile
ago, from a respected source.

It's perhaps my closest unheard on 940. So I'm hopeful.

Cx seem about average, btw...

[IRCA] Pixel Technologies AM-2 Antenna Reviews?

2013-12-15 Thread Les Rayburn
I'm interested in hearing any reviews from AM DX'ers who may have used
the Pixel Technologies AM-2 broadband loop antenna. It's by the same
folks who make the RF-Pro-1B antenna. It's quite a bit smaller than
their other loop at 25 in diameter, as opposed to 38...but is supposed
to be optimized for AM reception.

Amazon.com has this antenna available for around $200. I'm curious how
it performs, and compares to similar loops like the Wellbrook ALA-1530.
Thoughts?

[IRCA] WCIT-940 test is ON

2013-12-15 Thread Rick Dau

Heard here under KPSZ in Des Moines at 0204 ELT.  Currently running Morse Code
EXTREMELY slow.  Signal is fair at best, would like to do a report on it, but
KPSZ is running Christmas music and really making it difficult to hear exactly
what WCIT is transmitting.  :(  But at least it's logged.

Re: [IRCA] WCIT 940 DX Test tonight

2013-12-15 Thread Chernos Saul
Loads of morse code noted at 0202-0204, and I'm running the MP3 recorder off
the ASOR / Wellbrook loop aimed ne-sw. Somewhat weak but steady, not bad for
250 watts. I'll e-mail a clip station in the morning. Been after this one for
a long time, noice to hear it before a new Montreal station signs on next year.
Thanks to those organizing / conducting the test.

[IRCA] WCIT-940 test making it to Bowie, MD

2013-12-15 Thread Robert Wien
WCIT-940 test making it very nicely to Bowie, MD here tonight, (Monday morning
12/16) with loud morse code, university band music, sweep tones, and vocal
information
on test. Their 250 watt night power is NW/SE, so a good chunk right at me at
425 miles away from Lima, Ohio. Receiver: C-Crane, SM-2 Space
Magnet Loop. Already sent Email report to station and also via their website.
Their website feed doesn't match what's on the air on 940 at this time...

[IRCA] WCIT-940 DX test

2013-12-15 Thread Steve Francis

Really weak but readable with sweeps at 2:12 and 2:25 EST; fairly low-pitched
slow code at 2:13 and 2:23. Talk from WMAC Macon and Real Country from WKYK NC
were the chief sources of interference; someone with Spanish talk and music in
there too. No sign of the day rigs from WINZ and WNRG tonight, thankfully.

Ohio #100, no call changes.

Last time I got two new DX tests the same weekend was during Bill Clinton's
first term.

Thank you, Mark and Fred!
