[IRCA] WBZ IBOC

2013-12-21 Thread Jim Balle
At 0835 EST they are not running IBOC. I can hear stations on 1020 and 1040
in AM mode using the 8 khz filter and no interference from 1030. Jim, 85
miles west of WBZ.

WBZ-1030 has no IBOC tonight, which is quite unusual. It might indicate
they're on their backup transmitter... they seem a little weaker than
usual, but it's hard to say for sure. Folks in the northeast might want
to pay some attention to 1020 and 1040 tonight...

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-21

2013-12-21 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Asian signals rebounded in a major way here this morning, resulting in the best
session for the entire month (by far). Both low and high band TP's were
unusually vibrant, and Chinese stations were especially strong. The listening
session started off here at 1300, with both 594-JOAK and 972-HLCA unusually
potent. HLCA became the first TP to peg the PL-380 S/N readout here this month
with a monster pop music signal at 1306, and 1575-VOA briefly did the same
thing later on during a very generous sunrise enhancement (around 1335).
603-China, 639-CNR1, 1377-CNR1 and 1593-CNR1 all had their best signals of the
month here this morning, as well as 594-JOAK, 648-VOR, 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB,
828-JOBB, 972-HLCA and 1575-VOA. A full report (with MP3's) will follow later.

[IRCA] TP DX for December 21

2013-12-21 Thread Bruce Portzer
I can't say I had nearly the fun Gary had today. Overall, I would call
it a mediocre morning here, but it was quite a bit better than the past
few sessions. There were several frequencies with interesting
carriers, such as 1179 1188 1395 1404 1431 and 1449, but they never
produced any audio. Otherwise, reception was limited to the usual
powerhouses.

The SDR recording began at 1250 and showed very little until after
1500. There was a definite enhancement centered at about 1530.

Good - mostly understandable by a native speaker
1566 - HLAZ, various announcements in Chinese 1528-33. Briefly faded,
then man in Chinese 1537, song 1541
1575 "Welcome to the Voice of America in Burmese" 1530, then
fanfare & start of Burmese pgm, good until about 1545, still producing
audio 1604

Fair - occasionally understandable by a native speaker
693JOAB, woman in JJ, bits of music 1520 fair in CBU splatter
750KFQD, ID & CBS news 1300 mixing with Portland & Montana
890KBBI, BBCWS pgm to 1359, ID, jazz fill to TOH, then BBC news
mixing with CJDC

972KBS, mostly poor but faded up briefly with KK talk 1503 & 1537

Poor - recognizable program content
594JOAK, JJ talk & time pips 1300
747JOIB, woman //693 1521
774JOUB, woman & music //693 1519
1422weak talk 1527 & 1540
1557Taiwan?, woman in Chinese 1529-34, heavy domestic splatter
1593Probably China, good carrier but brutal 1590 splatter, woman
talking 1540

2013-12-21 Thread Dennis Gibson
Has anyone ever heard of this antenna? I came across it while looking at
scanner antennas. It screws into the Motorola NMO mount commonly used for
amateur radio and land mobile/public safety vehicle antennas. NMO mounts
usually terminate into a BNC or PL-259 (aka UHF) connector.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 12-21 (Conclusion)

2013-12-21 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

The shortest day of the year produced a pretty long list of Asian signals this
morning, as both low and high band TP's rebounded from the December doldrums in
a major way. Conditions here seemed somewhat better than what Bruce reported,
possibly because this quieter location had less domestic splatter.

While still in total darkness (around 1300) the band already seemed well above
average, with both 594-JOAK and 972-HLCA managing very impressive signals, and
a presumed 738-BEL2 in and out with weak Chinese audio. The FSL antenna was set
up in the rainy back yard shortly thereafter and received a monster signal from
972-HLCA at 1306, the first Asian station to peg the PL-380's S/N display for
the entire month. During this early period (from 1300-1430) both 594 and 972
were continually vibrant, with 1566-HLAZ and 1575-VOA also good at times.
Around 1430 there seemed to be a minor lull in propagation, but it was only
temporary. Starting around 1500 the low band came out of hibernation during a
generous sunrise enhancement with 603-China managing good signals in and out to
dominate a weaker HLSA from 1515-1535, and 558-HLQH managing fair audio in the
560-KPQ splatter. 639-CNR1 and 648-VOR's Korean service joined the low-band
Asian group with fair signals around 1530, and the pr!
esumed 738-BEL2 (Chinese female speech) was in and out at a fair level as
well. The high band was also pretty impressive during sunrise enhancement with
1377-CNR1, 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1 all producing their best signals of the month
from 1530-1545 (although I can certainly agree with Bruce that the 1590 Seattle
splatter was pretty rough against 1593-CNR1's good signal). The low band TP
action wrapped up around 1545 but 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1 both stuck around
until the 1600 TOH, wrapping up an unusually good "December Doldrums" morning.

[IRCA] Mysterious Test tones on 1340

2013-12-21 Thread Rick Dau
For about the past 10 minutes, I've been hearing someone on 1340 running
intermittent test tones, almost like a frequency check.  30 sec of tone,
followed by 18 sec of silence, alternating between the two.  Seems to be
looping NW-SE from Omaha.  Anyone else hearing this?

Can you record this and email it? I wonder if it's a new CP

[IRCA] WBZ IBOC Off and 1020 R. Reloj Network Echo

2013-12-21 Thread David Hochfelder
Thanks to folks who alerted us to WBZ IBOC being off! I am presently
hearing what sounds like a network echo for R. Reloj on 1020. Bruce Conti's
site and WRTH list only one Reloj on channel. Might be multipath of course.
Bit of the "wobbler" effect too.

This is my second logging on 1020 since WBZ ran IBOC, so I hope it's off
for good. Off to 1040...

I'm using my early Christmas present--Afedri SDR. It's not as good as the
Drake, but it does very different and very useful things. I will use it as
a spotter for the Drake, I think. It's been fun figuring out its
capabilities and weaknesses.

[IRCA] TP 21 Dec, Victoria version

2013-12-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Certainly, a livelier morning than of late, particularly earlier on,
when a number of old friends turned up. But it was odd in that the
stations that delivered audio from time to time were also the only
ones that really had worthwhile carriers; much of the rest of the
band was pretty dead.

Then there was the gap in propagation that Gary mentioned, from about
1430UT onwards, but here it lasted until about 1540UT, and 1550UT was
about the peak with some unusual appearances of Chinese and ??

Overall, a variable morning, with some nuggets.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

774 JOUB man in JJ 1405UT, but this seemed to disappear after 1500UT,
with 828 being the stronger through s/off at 1540-5 UT
1557 presumed Taiwan w/woman singing ballad in CC, strongest at
1549UT, 3 and one pips at 1600UT, but somewhat weaker by then.

1566 HLAZ 1539UT man in CC through past 1600UT, but strongest 1545-1555UT
1575 VoA woman in SE Asian language 1553UT, and pretty good at 1600UT
with Voice of America ID in EE.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

the above, passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK woman in JJ briefly at this level 1532UT
747 JOIB weather report by man //774 1301UT
828 JOBB man in JJ 1516UT, on and off at this strength through music
box s/off at 1540UT

972 HLCA man in KK 1522UT
1053 KK jammer 1400UT
1422 unID women in CC 1550UT
1593 CNR1 man in CC //6125 at 1543UT, but by 1550UT, there seemed to
be two stations, one with woman in CC and the other slow instrumental mx.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

873 JOGB man in JJ //774 1412UT
1377 CNR1 woman in CC //1593, briefly, at 1547UT
1395 unID. man talking, sounded vaguely CC, someone else on phone? 1553UT
1494 unID man talking, didn't seem //1287

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary"audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

567 864 891 1017 1044 1134 12871323 1332 1404

best wishes,

Nick
