Re: [IRCA] OT Light bulbs

2014-01-01 Thread Karl Zuk
Fast forward ten or fifteen years.
We will see posts like Old Light Bulb Found
I saw an old deak lamp at a tag sale and there was a light bulb in it.
'I carefully took it home and it works.
I now have it on a voltage reducer so it will last longer.
So good to see the old light again!

If they can circumvent the regulations by defining it as a heat lamp, I don't
see why they cant sell them here. (Next step is, they will outlaw heat lamps,
hi).

With the new year coming in, the end of the old bulbs in approaching
soon. I do not care for the light the new ones put out so I bought a lot

Anyone try them?  Thanks. I am preparing myself on what is coming down

[IRCA] New Year's Day TP's in Seattle

2014-01-01 Thread Bruce Portzer

Happy New Year, everyone.

TP conditions were a bit unusual today. Most of the activity was in the
lower half of the dial, instead of the upper half. The only signals
noted at the high end were weak underachievers on 1566 and 1575.

The DX peaked early today. Most of the stations had their best signals
before 1335. There was little to be heard after that, and virtually no
TP DX when sunrise arrived. My SDR recording started at 1250, which
left me wondering what would have been heard earlier.

Good -Mostly understandable by a native speaker for brief periods
774JOUB, man woman in Japanese 1255. Signal took a dive just
before ToH, so no pips heard at 1300, and very lousy signal during
weather report. Back with female monologue 1330 at good level, didn't
sound like the usual Chinese lessons so possibly something special for
New Year's Day. Gone after about 1340.

Fair - some of it understandable by a native speaker
747JOIB, briefly faded up with weather report 1310
972HLCA, pips 1300, fanfare, woman in Korean then faded

Poor - other stuff
594JOAK, time pips traces of talk 1300
675Very weak talk 1253
981CNR1, weak man woman in Chinese thru CKNW splatter 1321
1566HLAZ, male talk 1258, otherwise a carrier at best
1575VOA, talk in Asian language 1314

sunrise enhancement? not to speak of. Most of the action, such as it
was, was before 1400UT.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

nope

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB woman in JJ //774 1344UT
774 JOUB wiman in JJ 1344UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

1575 VoA? man and woman talking 1551UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or

[IRCA] first DX of New Year: fair to good TA's 4:30 p.m. EST, 1 JAN

2014-01-01 Thread Mark Connelly
A quick look at the band around 4:30 p.m. EST / 2130 UTC showed a fair
amount of medium-wave transatlantic activity.

UK stations on 693, 909, 1089, and 1215 were good.

882 had UK + COPE mix and 1053 was Libya + UK.

French stations on several channels were good from the low end (603) up
to 1557 indicating no specific part of the band being enhanced.

There were some good Spain signals, plus Algeria on several channels,
Morocco on 612, and Mauritania with a whopping signal (but light audio)
on 783.

Eastern Canada was good with NB on 810 1260, NS on 1140 1270, and
several Newfies.

[IRCA] Radio's Digital Dilemma

2014-01-01 Thread Barry McLarnon
Someone recently brought to my attention this new book about the trials
and tribulations of attempting to transition radio broadcasting to
digital. Most of the book deals with IBOC in the US, but DAB in other
parts of the world is also included:

http://www.amazon.com/Radios-Digital-Dilemma-Broadcasting-Twenty-First/dp/0415656125

Considering the hefty price tag, I won't be springing for a copy.
However, after searching a bit, I discovered that the book's contents
are much the same as the author's 2011 PhD thesis, and you can download
it here:

https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/bitstream/handle/2142/26240/Anderson_John.pdf?sequence=1

It makes for some fascinating reading, and if you're interested in
learning more about how IBOC was foisted on an unsuspecting public, and
where it may go from here, I encourage you to take a look. You'll
probably notice quite a few familiar names mentioned...

Re: [IRCA] Radio's Digital Dilemma

2014-01-01 Thread Chuck Hutton
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Do you have rough (or better) numbers for the number of AM stations
transmitting IBOC at the peak and today? It seems there have been no new major
users of IBOC since the initial phase, and a lot (half?) of the original
supporters have turned it off and said why bother?.

What I found most interesting was the poor perception of FM IBOC audio quality,
and FM IBOC is distinctly better than AM IBOC! So tell me again why masses of
consumers will rush out to buy AM IBOC???

parts of the world is also included:

Considering the hefty price tag, I won't be springing for a copy.

I haven't tracked the numbers over time, but they've been steadily
declining for the past three or four years. A total of about 310 AM
stations have run IBOC at one time or another, but only about 175 (or
maybe less) are still using it today. Most of those are either owned by
iBiquity investors, or their IBOC conversion was subsidized by the
