Re: [IRCA] CFMB 1280 Montreal
Once in a while they've left day power on at night over the past couple of decades and when they do, they basically are a drive around in the car at night and listen to station here near Chicago. Hopefully if this continues someone further away who needs them can add them. 73 KAZ -Original Message- From: dxe...@aol.com Sent: Jan 15, 2014 10:20 PM To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] CFMB 1280 Montreal Because of its northern night pattern, CFMB 1280 Montreal is a very rare visitor at my QTH in Madison WI. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 1-16
Hello All, Asian signals had a revival this morning, especially on the high band. 1566-HLAZ was the star of the morning (with its Chinese service hitting an excellent level around 1415), and a collection of other high band Asians were boosted by a generous sunrise enhancement from 1515-1550. Early on (from 1415-1500) not much more than 1566-HLAZ was showing much energy, but the dawn of daylight around 1515 also boosted 1287-JOHR, 1377-CNR1, 1503-JOUK, 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1 up to good levels in and out of the domestic splatter. A brief check of the low band at 1540 also revealed fair signals from 594-JOAK and 603-HLSA in and out, although both were pretty anemic compared to the high band Asians. 1503-JOUK had one of its best signals of the winter here around 1545, along with 1287-JOHR at 1550. If Dennis was listening this morning he must have received quite a few of high band Japanese, since he typically has much better propagation from that area than I do. The sole survivor here at 1600 was again the overachieving 1593-CNR1, which managed to get through the 1590-Seattle splatter with fair to good signals for most of sunrise enhancement. Overall it was a pretty average morning, but after the last couple of miserable days it seemed like quite a breakthrough. 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5 loopstick Tecsun PL-380 Ultralight + 12 Medium Wave FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] AM stereo
Scott, Will do. Any chance you have an MP3 recording of WION's 1480 ID at TOH? I'd love to know what I'm listening for, though CW should stand out pretty well. 1480 is a favorite frequency here for DX, with a nice mix of stations fading in. Love those full service stations that really serve the local community. That's what made AM radio great. All during the correspondence, I was wondering how a promising young writer like Josh could possibly have any interest in a pocket Sony transistor radio with a thumb wheel tuning dial... but it turned out that he had some real world personal experience with the model :-) 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) Hello Joshua, I was told that you are the expert on the Sony SRF-39FP radio in North America. I’m pleased to meet you and thankful for your time. Well, thanks for the compliment. It's probably true that I've had more exposure to the radio than anyone else (who has managed to stay out of prison, that is). Basically, the article is highlighting the fact that for prison inmates, radio is still king, and that among them, the Sony SRF-39FP is kind of the king of portable prison radios. The problem is that Sony doesn’t want to cooperate much with the article, as it associates their company with prison. That makes PR people gun-shy. Sony's lack of cooperation is probably also related to the fact that their SRF-39FP model is based on mid-1990's technology, and is hardly a model that is likely to turn around their lackluster financial situation. So, what can you tell me about the SRF-39FP? For instance, what year did it first appear? Do you have any idea how many units have been produced throughout the years or where it fits in the context of Sony walkman-style radios? What makes it special and unique? The Sony SRF-39FP is just one member of a family of analog AM-FM Walkman pocket radios introduced by Sony around 1995. The primary innovation (and attraction) of these radios is the CXA1129N integrated circuit, a radio on a chip breakthrough which provided unprecedented sensitivity, selectivity and image rejection on the AM band. This breakthrough CXA1129N chip is the master component in the entire Sony analog Walkman family, which includes the SRF-29, SRF-39, SRF-39FP, SRF-49, SRF-59 (the most widely marketed model) and the SRF-S84. My own fascination with these radios was based on the casual purchase of a $17 Sony SRF-59 model in November of 2007, which shocked me with the reception of three Japanese and Korean AM stations (594-JOAK, 747-JOIB and 972-HLCA) all the way across the Pacific Ocean to my home in Puyallup, Washington. Having received extensive Navy training in electronics, I was extremely interested in how Sony could possibly pack such performance in a small pocket radio, and then market it for the ridiculously low price of $17. The CXA1129N chip was the reason-- and the radio instantly became a cult item among those of us in the Ultralight Radio Yahoo group in late 2007. Despite its dubious user market, the SRF-39FP is actually the top-of-the-line member of this Sony analog Walkman family, with higher quality components than the SRF-59. Sony apparently had a contract to manufacture the SRF-39FP for the California prison system starting around 2002, and of course with the booming customer base, Sony had every incentive to ensure top performance in every model. Unlike the SRF-59 the SRF-39FP Prison radio almost always comes out of Sony's Chinese factories in top alignment, and has high quality components that will last indefinitely. Both the radio's case and the supplied ear phones are completely transparent to make it impossible for prisoners to hide contraband, giving the radio a bizarre naked appearance (unique in the Sony analog Walkman class). As far as I know, the first SRF-39FP models to be available for prison use appeared in California around 2002. The Sony SRF-39FP Prison Radio became a very big hit in our Ultralight Radio Yahoo group in early 2008, although it was only available through eBay sellers, who would only ship the radio to purchasers in the USA. Apparently these eBay sellers had supply sources in the California prison system, since the radios were always sold with the same packing material, original instructions, and refusal to sell outside of the USA. The going rate for the new SRF-39FP radios on eBay was a reasonable $25 in early 2008, but it has since jumped to about $40. The eBay sellers' refusal to sell these popular radios outside of the USA created a serious demand for them in Canada and elsewhere, but these Canadian hobbyists were out of luck unless they could find a purchaser

[IRCA] 1520 NY off, more on 1710 TIS testing, good SRS/SSS
1520 WWKB Buffalo seems to be off. Solid K-Love ()Ohio) here. Aaron in Philly has posted an alert to this effect on the BCB logger, which triggered my check here. (Thanks). Separately, the TIS testing, which is almost certainly the Hudson County NJ TIS working on its new 100-watt system, seems to be running a loop without an actual ID. The actual current TIS (at lower power) seems to be running its own various announcements, and the two appear very much to be ***mixing***. I am inclined, if this can be confirmed, to count this as two separate stations. I can only wonder if they are running two transmitters from a single location or vicinity... Was a banner day for DX here. Pre-sunrise netted rare relogs: 570 WNAX SD, 580 WIBW KS, 610 KDAL MN, 630 St. Louis MO. Very good at the lower end, and higher than 800 you wouldn't have a clue anything was going on. This evening, post-local sunset, I nabbed much-wanted KBHB Sturgis SD on 810 with announcements about classic car and collectible auctions and such in and around SD. [IRCA] TP 16 Jan, Victoria version
Now, that was a bit more like it. Double peak, one at around 1345UT fading down gently to nothing much from 1400 to well past 1500UT (unlike Walt's report, little sign of JOUK-1503 around 1500UT, but it acquitted itself well at other times), with another peak around 1545UT. Almost all the action the entire 1300-1600UT period was above 1250kHz. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 1503 JOUK woman in JJ 1549UT, but had been in somewhat less well at many other times, fairly consistent signal this morning on many occasions. Heard //594 a couple of times, but 594 was a pale shadow in comparison 1566 HLAZ Big JJ s/off 1343-1344UT, then a reprise with woman in CC 1349UT; a very anemic sunrise peak in comparison, man in CC barely readable 1545UT Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 1287 JOHR man in JJ 1543UT, but similar strength w/woman in JJ 1259UT followed by single pip on hour, then man talking 1386 JOQC? This one was also in during both peaks, though strongest signal during s/off at 1540-5UT. Still fading up during the call, but that one seemed pretty much JOQC, which is in NE Honshu with nothing much but salt water until Vancouver Island. Another one to listen to a bit more. 1593 CNR1 woman in CC 1347UT, mixing w/NHK2 1593 JOQB? NHK2 s/off anthem then chimes w/CNR1 way under //6175, 1540UT, best by far on N. Flag despite splash from 1600. Almost certain that the ID before the anthem was JOQB NHK Niigata, but it was still fading up at that time.I might play more with this, as I don't think I've heard a call ID at home. not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker: 1602 NHK2 synchros. S/off chimes 1542UT Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) : 594 JOAK woman in JJ //1503 1549UT 774 JOUB man mumbling 1350UT seemed //1386? 1557 Taiwan? female pop mx 1547UT, best on North Flag 1575 VoA? man talking, west Flag Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 567 603 1269 1314 1332 1377 1422 best wishes, Nick ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on January 16
My DX today was very similar to Nick's. There was a resurgence at the high end of the dial, highlighted by a solid signal from HLAZ for an hour or two. There was very little at the low end of the dial. Like Nick, I had decent reception between 1300 and 1400, a drop off for a while, and then a resurgence at sunrise. There were exceptions - HLAZ remained good after 1400, dribbled down to nothing just before 1500 and never returned after that. 1575 seemed to have different stations at different times: definitely VOA at 1600, but 2.5 hours earlier the channel had what was more likely an AFN station. Here's what the SDR captured today: Good - easily understood by a native speaker during the times noted 1503JOUK, discussion in Japanese 1342-1351, considerably weaker after that but had a slight improvement 1540 1566HLAZ, quite strong at times 1240-1450 in Japanese until 1345, then Chinese. Signal dropped off drastically after 1500 Fair - a few words could have been understood by a native speaker 1287JOHR, Japanese talk rapidly fading in and out every few seconds 1257. Also at 1536 steadier signal with group talk 1575Hiphop music 1312-1340, probably AFN 1575VOA, Asian talk 1559, mentioned voanews.com, then theme mx and start of news pgm 1593CNR or NHK talk sometimes poking through KLFE splatter 1353. Japanese NA 1540 then chimes //1602 Poor - too weak to understand anything 747JOIB, faint pips 1400 972bits of talk 1311 1422bits of talk 1340 1602NHK2, very faint pips 1300. Better with NA //1593 1540, then chimes 1541 Interesting carriers 1269 1278 1314 1386 1413 1431 1557 1584 ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Things were somewhat improved here in southern Alberta as well, though apparently not as markedly as on the coast. [IRCA] 1640 Oregon!
Jim Renfrew, Holley NY 0148 EST1640 KDZR Lake Oswego // 1560 Disney Not very strong, but it is evidently the same as 1560 when the music peaks. This is US State #48! Right on the heels of KKXA Snohomish WA (which is not listed in my 2010-1011 NRC log, which is why I couldn't ID on my own) Guess which states I've yet to log? KKXA wouldn't have been listed in the 2010 log, I dont believe it went on the air until about a year or two ago. Good going on KDZR! Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] 1640 Oregon!
Congratulations Jim on hearing the 48 contiguous states! Amazing feat in this day and age. Conditions are unbelievable tonight--but of course, I have currently have no antennas up, and no time to DX. Went for a ride in the truck just to do a quick bandscan. Western and Northern conditions are awesome from here. -- 73, Les Rayburn, N1LF Maylene, AL EM63 Member NRC, IRCA, Medium Wave DX Circle Former CPC Chairman for NRC/IRCA SDR-IQ,Funcube Pro, Wellbrooke ALA-1530+ loop, LF Engineering Active Whips, Quantum Phaser, Kiwa Loop, Palstar MW Pre-Selector On 1/17/2014 1:10 AM, Steve Francis wrote: Congratulations, Jim, on hearing the 48 contiguous states!
