[IRCA] Popular new features need new donors!

2014-01-31 Thread Radio Heritage Mail

February 1 2014

Hello

Now that 2014 is moving along, we need to tell you that we've had
only 8 donations in January, to be expected as thoughts and
concerns are elsewhere over the Christmas/New Year period.

The result is that we still have to find $1,842 to meet the January
overheads...these are real costs we have to pay others for.and
the rate is fixed at $450 per week for five years even though costs
of utilities etc go up. Our volunteers get paid nothing of course!

Last 3 months v previous 3 months
* New visits +4.5%
* All visits -3.2%
* USA visits +29.5%
* Australia visits +1.5%
* NZ visits -23.7%
[these are affected by seasonal variations]

You'll find more new Retro Radio Dial features now online as we've
had some time to research them over the quiet time, and we've got
some more in the works. We'll do what we can to keep bringing more
features and content online this year, which is also our 10th
anniversary online.

We've been fielding a good number of the inquiries that
people make when their focus is on family and memories, and we
continue the work of protecting memorabilia and researching new
features and all the other unseen work that goes behind what we share.

Join us on our Facebook page - we have now reached 880 likes and
growing!

Already, four of our new features rank in the Top 20 features seen
during January 2014... it's good to see they're liked so much!

We must now find $1,842 without delay:
* we've about reached the limit to financial loss we can tolerate
* all donations are publicly acknowledged
* tax deductible receipts for NZ donors
* new option to donate smaller regular amounts
* we have no other income except for donations
* Yes, we do much more than manage a website too!

It's easy to make a donation. Just use Visa, Mastercard, Amex etc
safely via the secure Paypal donation button on every page of our
website www.radioheritage.net. You can choose the amount, the
currency and for recurring payments, how much and how often. This is
a very safe and well respected global payment system and your data is
completely protected. We never even get to know your credit card
details.

So if you do want to see radio heritage protected and shared, don't
wait for someone else to make a donation, 99% of people never bother
to... but the 1% make it possible for thousands to enjoy hundreds of
features every day, underpin our radio guides, and make it possible
to keep safe many thousands of items of radio memorabilia for all to
enjoy.

Thanks so much for joining us again in 2014, and do enjoy the new
features we've recently added such as Retro Radio Dial Australia, New
Zealand & Pacific; South East Asia; South Asia; and Braziland
keep an eye out for more..

All best wishes for 2014, and thank you if you can make
a donation this weekend. It is very very seriously needed.

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on January 31

2014-01-31 Thread Bruce Portzer
As Nick said, there wasn't much of anything today until after 1500.
There was an interesting sunrise enhancement that started at about 1520
and lasted until about 1535. All of today's TP action was above 1250,
with no signs of life on the lower 2/3 of the dial.

Good - mostly understandable by a native speaker
1557Taiwan, Chinese songs 1522-1531+, sometimes peaking at good levels
1566HLAZ, announcements in Chinese 1531

Fair - a native speaker would recognize a few words or phrases

1422 JORF, Japanese talk 1535
1575VOA, Asian talk 1534

Poor - bits of stuff in the noise and splatter

[IRCA] 1640 KZLS OK flipping again

2014-01-31 Thread Glenn Hauser
** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Jan 31 at 2102 UT check, no news, just `True Oldies` music
even at hourtop from KZLS Enid-Hennessey-Oklahoma City. But not for long! Tnx
to Artie Bigley for finding this on the reactivated RadioInsight.com board for
Oklahoma, posted by Lance Venta, yet *another* format change for 1640; call
change coming too? ---

``Reid Mullins And Talk Coming To KZLS Oklahoma City
Last Updated on January 30, 2014 at 3:49 pm
Champlin Broadcasting will begin shifting "True Oldies 1640" KZLS Enid/Oklahoma
City to Talk on Monday, February 3. Reid Mullins, who had hosted mornings at
Clear Channel Talk 1000 KTOK until last August will join the station Monday for
a daily program from 7 to 10 am [13-16 UT, probably meaning M-F only, not
daily].

McCarvilleReport.com states that "The new show on KZLS will bring back the
"information and news" paradigm that former KTOK listeners were accustomed to,
Mullins said. Guests will include local, state, and national political figures,
commentators, and experts in various fields and sectors from agriculture,
energy, healthcare, immigration and more."

Mullins joining KZLS will kick off another format change at the station, which
picked up the Oldies format and KZLS call letters when sister Classic Country
"99.7 Hank-FM" KNAH debuted in late September. KZLS will shift to News/Talk in
all dayparts by the end of February.``

One comment so far: ``It was a real treat to hear the Oldies on 1640 via
skywave at night in the Dallas area. They had a real nice processor setting too
and were not handicapped by the reduced analog bandwidth which so many AM
stations seem to run as a default these days. Nothing like Oldies in marvelous
mono on skywave. I knew it was too good to last :-( Jay Walker``. I guess the
1630 DFW outlet is evitable (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

585, 639, 684, 774, and 855 from Spain are loud now, nearly local-like.

909 UK and 945 France are also crankin'.

Upper band (above 1200) is less impressive than at sunset; 1521 Saudi

My audio clipwith call repeated a few times at the start.. I just
didnt have a peak at any time to record the whole ann, as it was very

Re: [IRCA] Array Solutions SAL-30

2014-01-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Guy Atkins sent me this link awhile ago, don't know if you've seen it Les.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=f8no9r3Ufo4

That's with a slightly larger version of the same antenna I believe.

A smaller and earlier version, closer to what you might be able to
handle is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKBOEtkJ7yY

Problem with smaller ones, is that you may null a strong station, but
there's nothing left to hear on the channel, as you're only left with
the noise floor. An antenna with a good null is not necessarily a
good antenna. (if effectively, everything else is partially nulled
also; phased antennas usually are lossy)

best wishes,

Nick
