Re: [IRCA] 1710 yesterday heard in Scotland

2014-02-02 Thread Tim Tromp

Hi Ken,

Hopefully you were recording last night. 1720 was active with a pirate
that came on the frequency at 0250 UTC. The programming was Radio Free
Whatever (likely relayed by pirate Undercover Radio). S5-S6 signal
here, but all alone of course on this frequency.

2014-02-02 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Asian signals rebounded quite nicely here this morning, with morning
enhancement favoring the low band Asian mainland stations. Both 603-HLSA and
657-Pyongyang had Chinese co-channels mixing with them around 1510, as
657-China (Henan?) was heard here for the first time in over 2 years.

My listening session started off around 1450, when both the low and high band
had some vibrant Asian signals. 594-JOAK, 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang were fair
to good on the low band, while 1566-HLAZ (very good) and 1575-VOA (good) were
potent on the high band. Around 1500 sunrise enhancement started to kick in,
which seemed to boost up the low band Asians, but make 1566-HLAZ and 1575-VOA
fizzle out (along with a weak 1593-CNR1). 603-China (Hulun Buir?) showed up to
pester fair-to-good HLSA around 1510, while 657-China did the same to a
fair-level Pyongyang a few minutes later. 558-HLQH also came out of the noise
// 603 to face the 560-KPQ splatter at a fair level. This strange sunrise
enhancement propagation continued until about 1530 with only these 3 low band
Asian frequencies showing much activity-- the high band Asians having all
bailed out around 1515. Overall it was a pretty strange morning, and it will be
interesting to find out what others heard.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 2 Feb 2014

2014-02-02 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Yesterday was almost totally dismal with TPs (only a weak HLAZ around 1300
preventing a shutout), and today could be described as 'not quite as
dismal'. Certainly far better in terms of carriers, especially on the high
end, but not much in terms of audio. Again had weak audio from HLAZ, and
other than that only traces of audio on 1548, 1557, and 1593.

It's been a good week for domestics though, with CFPL from London, ON on
980 heard back home and WTSN 1270 from NH logged here.

[IRCA] Question about radio coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII

2014-02-02 Thread Rick Dau

Will non-flagship stations on the Denver and Seattle radio networks (i.e.,
other than KOA-850 and KIRO-710) that want to carry today's game have to do so
via Westwood One/Dial Global network, or will it be business-as-usual for those
stations?

[IRCA] TP DX for 2 Feb in Seattle

2014-02-02 Thread Bruce Portzer
Kind of a crummy morning for TPs. At least it didn't turn out to be a
predictor of Superbowl results. I'll skip the Ground Hog analogies.

There was a humdrum enhancement at sunrise. No audio below about 1500.
No carriers below 1400, except for a weak one on 774. No audio at all
from any TPs until about 1430. I'm glad the SDR did the recording while
I slept; I would have hated to get up early today.

Good - A native speaker would have understood much of it
1566HLAZ, man in Chinese 1523

Fair - A native speaker would have recognized a few words here and there
1575VOA, Asian talk 1512
1593CNR1, Chinese talk 1523, had a really good signal but was
getting pummeled pretty badly by KLFE. Sort of like Peyton Manning vs
the Seahawks' defense.

Poor - A native speaker would have understood nothing
1494Pop song 1524
1557Pop music 1453

Carriers - 774 1431 1422 1503 1584 1602

[IRCA] WMVP 1000 Distortion on 990 and 1010

2014-02-02 Thread amdxer

I am hearing distorted splash from WMVP 1000 in
Chicago.

It sounds almost identical to the
Darth Vader sounding noise heard from WABH
1380 last week which was showing up on 1370USB and
1390LSB.

The distortion is showing up around
990khz and 1010khz, intermittantly, perhaps once a minute
or so - sometimes more often.  It is not as
intense as from WABH.

First noticed
this a few minutes ago.  Will listen in again
tomorrow moring to see if gets any worse.

[IRCA] TP 2Feb, Victoria version

2014-02-02 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Up from yesterday. Primary feature was a bottom band and a top band
enhancement without much in between. Mostly done by 1530UT, though
HLAZ hung in for a bit longer.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

603 HLSA male and female vocal mx 1526UT, ID'd various times by
//558, best on west Flag

1566 HLAZ man in CC 1516UT, best on N. Flag as were 1575 and 1593
1593 CNR1 man in CC 1518UT then woman //6175 but slightly offset,
becoming very loud by 1519UT, still doing well at 1530UT w/news

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1575 VoA likely, female vocal mx 1517UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

558 HLQH vocal mx //603 1515UT
567 JOIK man in JJ //594 that was weaker 1525UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

1377 CNR1 man talking //1593 1528UT
1494 unID woman talking, JJ inflection 1525UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

531 612 639 657 693 702 1098 1458

best wishes,
