[IRCA] Errant Canadian signals

2014-02-06 Thread Chernos Saul
CIWW 1310 Ottawa was reported in MN on the NRC DX Tips list last night. They've
been doing this a lot when I've been at my Burnt River ON site, and have also
been reported by others as far as MO and MN (NE?). They were huge here in
Toronto last night.

1280 Montreal has also been reported as considerable distances, and I've also
noticed it unusually dominant at Burnt River.

But I'm not5 sure if these two are regulars at night, as I've been in Toronto
for the past week and here for two more before returning for another round of
DXing. But I am thinking of calling their engineering heads.

First, though, I need to know:

1) How far out they are making it AT NIGHT, WELL EXCEEDING THEIR NIGHT
PATTERNS, WITH GOOD SIGNALS. And HOW FREQUENTLY.

2) Are any OTHER Canadian stations doing the same?

Thanks,

Saul Chernos

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-6

2014-02-06 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Like Dennis reported, Asian DX seemed to be somewhat affected by the Artic deep
freeze this morning, but at least one low band frequency had some interesting
action.

The back yard was even colder than yesterday (12 degrees), so to avoid radio
freezing issues, sessions were limited to 15 minutes each (1420-1435, 1450-1505
and 1520-1535). Around 1430 the only Asians with audio were 603-HLSA
(poor-fair), 1566-HLAZ (fair) and 1575-VOA (fair), although 594-JOAK was in and
out at a threshold level. As daylight approached (around 1455) 603-HLSA got a
moderate boost, and was joined by its usual Chinese co-channel (Hulun Buir?),
both of them having fair-good signals in and out around the 1500 TOH. Sunrise
enhancement didn't do anything for the high band Asians, with both 1566-HLAZ
and 1575-VOA staying at a fairly anemic level. The only unusual aspect of the
morning was the staying power of 603-HLSA and China, which kept up their
competition (at a weak level) until 1535, long after all the other Asians had
bailed. Except for this one frequency, the rest of the band seemed rather
frozen this morning.

two were competing throughout the morning

Hard for me to tell about CIWW, since I'm only 7 km away from their
transmitter site, and squarely in the boresight of both their day and
night patterns. Their signal level should bump up a bit when they
switch to night pattern, so I'll check tonight and see if I can see any
difference.

CFMB has definitely been staying on day pattern at night lately. Their
nighttime DA is an in-line 6-tower configuration with a very tight
pattern to the NNW. I'm due west of them, and they should be inaudible
here at night, but lately they've been dominating the channel. You can
see how they'd have an incentive to forget to switch, as their night
pattern would provide very poor coverage of the 'burbs to the east and
west of Montreal, and along much of the the south shore.

2) Are any OTHER Canadian stations doing the same?

The most blatant example that comes to mind is CJVA-810 in Caraquet NB.
Their night pattern throws virtually all of their signal to the NE,
since they're required to provide a high degree protection to co-channel
Class A WGY. And yet, they bomb into my location, 860 km to the west of
them, night after night, sometimes even topping WGY (only 320 km from
me). Again, they have a strong incentive not to switch: their daytime
ND pattern provides good coverage of some large populated areas to the
west (i.e., around Bathurst NB), which would be lost completely at night
if they switched to their nighttime DA. On the other hand, they have an
FM simulcast that covers these areas, so one wonders why they would
bother to cheat, or indeed why they bother to keep the AM on at all. In
any case, I have no hesitation in saying that they cheat, since this has
been going on for many years.

to Artie Bigley for finding this on the reactivated RadioInsight.com board for
Oklahoma, posted by Lance Venta, yet *another* format change for 1640; call
change coming too? ---

``Reid Mullins And Talk Coming To KZLS Oklahoma City
Last Updated on January 30, 2014 at 3:49 pm
Champlin Broadcasting will begin shifting True Oldies 1640 KZLS Enid/Oklahoma
City to Talk on Monday, February 3. Reid Mullins, who had hosted mornings at
Clear Channel Talk 1000 KTOK until last August will join the station Monday for
a daily program from 7 to 10 am [13-16 UT, probably meaning M-F only, not
daily].

McCarvilleReport.com states that The new show on KZLS will bring back the
information and news paradigm that former KTOK listeners were accustomed to,
Mullins said. Guests will include local, state, and national political figures,
commentators, and experts in various fields and sectors from agriculture,
energy, healthcare, immigration and more.

Mullins joining KZLS will kick off another format change at the station, which
picked up the Oldies format and KZLS call letters when sister Classic Country
99.7 Hank-FM KNAH debuted in late September. KZLS will shift to News/Talk in
all dayparts by the end of February.``

One comment so far: ``It was a real treat to hear the Oldies on 1640 via
skywave at night in the Dallas area. They had a real nice processor setting too
and were not handicapped by the reduced analog bandwidth which so many AM
stations seem to run as a default these days. Nothing like Oldies in marvelous

drive-time, not advisable under current conditions. Supposedly, talk blox are
being phased in the rest of February, with part of the airtime on KZLS still
filled with True Oldies: yes, back to music after 1600 UT (Glenn Hauser, Enid,

along with it, daytime IBOC! As I am driving around central Enid, I hasten to
find a place to park with the least line noise, to go after DX on this suddenly
clear frequency! I stop in front of a day care center near Seventh Randolph,
and hope I don`t look too suspicious.

I`m hoping for WOI Ames IA, and that`s obviously just what I am getting on 640,
weak but clear during ``Science Friday from PRI`` (no longer NPR, since demise
of `Talk of the Nation`), Ira Flatow interviewing Alan Alda. There is also a
slow SAH from much weaker station. Assuming skywave is not in play at
mid-afternoon, most likely the 50 kW non-direxional daytime groundwave signal
from WCRV Collierville TN (Memphis), with the only other possibility KTIB
Thibodaux LA which is 5 kW, direxional N/S-ish. KFI is a bit far.

At 2058 UT, winter weather advisory for Iowa; 2059 UT mentions University of
Northern Iowa (also on KUNI, I assume), and ID for ``Iowa Public Radio News,
WOI, 640, Ames-Des Moines``. This is 5 kW non-direxional at a city-to-city
distance of 726 km = 451 statute miles, over

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only;
or Sony SRF-59 as specified; Nissan stock caradio as specified; FRG-7 with E-W
longwire as specified

Note: I am aware that for the last few weeks, some of my weekly reports have
been appearing twice on some lists, even tho I only send them once. OTOH, they
may be missing completely due to misapplied spam filtering, so if not there as
usual on a Thursday, check one of the sources mentioned above.

** MEXICO. 700, Feb 3 at 1314 UT, rustic song in non-Spanish with frequency to
itself; still in at 1329 UT just before sunrise here but fading: presumed usual
XEETCH, Etchojoa, Sonora, La Voz de los Tres Rios which broadcasts in three
indigenous languages (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 700, Feb 4 at 1315 UT, rustic Mexican music, hypo announcer, no
doubt the regular XEETCH, Etchojoa, Sonora (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, Feb 2 at 0639, XEPPM is still modulating with Spanish music,
instead of stopping circa 0600; and it`s still undermodulated, but better than
usual, yet not enough oomph to overcome 6180 Brasil. Just to be sure, I try to
// it to 1060 XEEP, and succeed sufficiently amid the QRM there. Wolfgang
Büschel also heard 6185- past 0600, 18 Hz low, and declared that ``Aoki is
wrong``, but I say it`s just another instance of variable closing on 6185;
don`t count on it to continue, nor even all-night as it once was (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1707, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, Feb 3 at 0604, XEPPM is again still modulating Spanishly past
nominal 0600*, ACI from Brasil (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, Feb 4 at 0625 check, XEPPM is completely off, no modulation
and no carrier either; on Feb 2, Wolfgang Büschel heard them until 0700* (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1707, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 1180, Feb 1 at 0711 UT tune-in ``Ciudad Delicias,
Chihuahua`` partial ID amid music. Per WRTH 2014, it`s XEDCH with 1.5 kW at
night; per IRCA it`s 250 watts. And Cantú *still* claims the call is XEJK.
Whatever, how can this possibly surpass the 34 R. Rebelde jammers all over Cuba
(per WRTH) on 1180 ranging from 1 to 200 kW, including four of 50 kW? What
little RF is coming out of Cuba is easily nulled for XEDCH to dominate, with
more QRM from Omaha than Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic MW carrier search, Jan 31 at 0122 UT; 1521 Saudi

OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search Feb 3: JBA on 774 at 1254, 594 at 1255, 747 at
1256, all likely NHK. Today`s LSR is 1331 UT, precessing about one minute
earlier per day (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1170, Feb 5 at 0655 UT, still trying to pull an ID from a SS with

Saul, it should be noted that at the time Richard heard CIWW, they had already
made the switch to their daytime pattern (switch time in February is 0700 ELT).

Thanks,

[IRCA] TP 6 Feb, Victoria version

2014-02-06 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
HLAZ showed reasonably well again this morning, though not as good as
yesterday, and faded well before 1530UT. 603 picked up the slack a
bit later, but overall quite a poor morning for sunrise enhancement,
and for anything else for that matter

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ man in CC 1456UT; faded up around 1445UT, but didn't hit
too many peaks like this

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

603 HLSA deep voiced man in KK, its best signal of the morning
1529UT, into music a bit more upbeat than usual. ID'd earlier by
the distinctive syncopated pips at 1500UT.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above, passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

594 JOAK NHK1 theme mx 1420UT, then woman talking
774 JOUB end of language lesson theme mx, then pips 1300UT
972 HLCA likely w/male vocal, easy listening pop mx 1302UT
1503 JOUK? man talking 1524UT, no parallels available

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

southern Alberta. Once again 1566 HLAZ and 1575 VOA did very well,
peaking around 1445. Otherwise, just carriers, some upper end ones
(1557, 1593) near audio, but lower down just so-so.

Re: [IRCA] Errant Canadian signals

2014-02-06 Thread Chernos Saul
Thank you for all the reports re 'errant' Cdn signals. I'm reviewing it and
next week will try to get in touch with a few engineers. The 1280 in Montreal
was heard in British Columbia, and that could be at 50 KW day power / pattern,
so I'd recommend going after that one in particular. Pat Martin et al

If anyone is really working at getting any of these, and wants me to hold off
for a bit, please let me know.

2014-02-06 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Your UN'id 1450 is WKAL 1450 Rome, NY. I listened to it a few times,
started to hear the call letters closely, plus i recognized the jingle
package as a TM Century package done for News Radio 78 WBBM.. used mainly
on news/talk stations which made WKAL easier to identify.

2014-02-06 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I haven't been able to identify the station in the 980 clip, but I may have
some help in getting an ID.

The jingle heard on the 980 UN'id clip actually starts at :48 seconds with
just bed music and no vocals. To me, it sounds like the one here at 18
seconds in, jingle #4.

http://www.onairdj.com/Q925.mp3

The Q92.5 jingles are done by Studio Dragonfly (TM Century's discount arm)
exclusivly for affiliates of Westwood One Radio Network's Adult Standards
Satelitte formats.

And my ears think Im hearing the Westwood One Adult Standards jingle in
your 980 clip.

ANd your 1420 clip definately sounds like it ends in an O.. to my ears it
SOUNDS like WKEO, but there's no WKEO.. so the K could be something else,
but it definately sounds like W*EO.
