2014-02-10 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Like Dennis reported, it was a very good morning for Asians on both the low and
high bands. The session started off at 1430 here, and a decent sunrise
enhancement brought up the signals of several second-tier TP's, continuing
until around 1525 here. The Japanese were well represented, but a few mainland
Asia TP's were also pretty vibrant.

558 HLQH Daegu, S. Korea Fair with
 long set music at 1451, // 603
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Very good with
Japanese talk at 1438; strongest low band TP
603 HLSA Namyang, S. Korea Fair-good
at 1500 TOH with KBS ID and 3 + 1 pips
639 CNR1 China Synchros Poor-fair at
1507 with male-female Chinese news
648 VOR Razdolnoye, Russia Poor-fair under
CISL splatter during peak sunrise enhancement
657 R. Pyongyang, N. Korea Fair-good with
female Korean speech at 1504
738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Presumed the one with
weak Chinese speech under KCBS splatter at 1507
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Fair Japanese speech at
   1502, but troubled by 750-Portland
828 JOBB Osaka, Japan Very good Japanese male
speech at 1510; one of its best signals recently
936 Anhui, China (presumed) Poor-fair Chinese
female speech in and out of noise at 1509
972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Very good Korean
   male-female conversation at 1511
1134 JOQR Tokyo, Japan Good rapid-fire Japanese
male-female speech at 1456; usually KBS here
1287 JOHR Sapporo, Japan Fair-good with Japanese
  talk at 1504
1377 CNR1 China In and out of noise with male

FYI there is one in Monticello MN. The one in Hudson WI has been
dismantled. There is one further east so I will investigate that one in a

still audible over the new WI TIS. I hope this helps a little. Maybe Bob

[IRCA] unID TIS 530 solved - thank you!

2014-02-10 Thread Chernos Saul

Thank you to
those who listened and made various suggestions. We have a winner. I’ll
get to that...

First, I
should have stated that I checked the FCC TIS site. The problem was that there
are several possibilities. I didn’t want to feed any of my own preconceptions
to the list.

So, looking
at the three states where a TIS would mention Michigan's Upper Peninsula, here’s
what I thought, based on the FCC list.
MI is the
most obvious option, and while three of four 530 stations are well away from
the UP (Lansing, Holland and Big Rapids), one is in Mackinaw City, right at the
UP's base. So I considered this
a strong candidate. It’s also closest to me, by far.
MN borders
MI’s UP, but there's only three MN stations on 530 and they're all in and
around St. Paul-Minneapolis, well away from MI’s UP. So I considered MN out of
the picture. It’d also be the farthest from me, for what that’s worth.
WI has quite a few 530 TISes – Madison, Oshkosh, Keiler, Prairie du Chien,
Hudson, Poynette, Mauston
and Superior are all well away from the Michigan border, so I ruled them out.
(Furthermore, Todd Skaine in
MN replied on the IRCA list that Hudson has been dismantled, so that’s a
double-whammy against Hudson – too far away from MI and not even on the air).
That left TISes
in Hurley and Marinette as possibilities. Both are close enough to MI (Hurley
is right on the MI border) to warrant mentioning the UP in the kind of detail I
heard.
So, really, I’d
narrowed it down to three stations, WPPD478 in Marinette WI, WNQD828 in Hurley
WI, and WNHC787 in Mackinaw City MI.

And the winner ... WNHC787 is on the Mackinac Bridge on I-75, on the south end
of MI's UP, and DXer Scott Yost of MI
nailed it!
“It is the
TIS at the Mackinac Bridge, 100 miles north of my QTH. Part of the loop is a
recap of the pre-bridge history of the Straits area. Also, in recording 3 at
the 20 second point they use the phrase “Mighty Mac, the bridge that couldn’t
be built”. It's not that my hearing is that good, just that I’ve listened to
the loop more than once back when we visited the area with our young sons some
years ago. It was a favorite spot.”
I know the
recordings were weak. That’s 10 watts on 530 for you, and although CIAO Brampton
ON was off I am not absolutely certain its carrier was off. The station
actually cut in and out over an hour or two just around sunrise. I was thrilled
to get a hint of
anything on the channel.
I listened,
and can hear what Scott heard, particularly ‘Might Mac’. Indeed, it carries
that moniker:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Bridge
And there’s
an entry for it at Michiguide:

www.michiguide.com/dials/amtis/wnhc787.html

Finally,
Radio Reference tells me there’s a north transmitter and a south transmitter:
www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?fccCallsign=WNHC787

I’ll just log
it by the calls and Mackinac Bridge MI.

I've also found a contact at the TIS, so I'll mail them a clip.

Anyhow, this is a new
one for my log, and on a channel I don’t exactly spend much time on (thanks to
CIAO).

Thanks,
Scott, for recognizing the loop, and thank you also to Todd, Russ, Dennis
and others for listening and chipping in.

600 here (besides CBNA) is usually Rebelde Cuba // 670, 1180, 5025 and
Puerto Rico // 580. Checking parallels or webstreams should nail those
two down. Colombia used to be common, but rarer now.

Growler 540 is off-channel Nicaragua, often noted 'backgrounding' usual
CBT / WFLF / Rebelde mash-up.

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on February 10

2014-02-10 Thread Bruce Portzer
As is often the case, my morning didn't resemble what Dennis and Gary
reported. The low band TPs were downright mediocre, with only a few NHK
stations audible. 594 was the only one of the bunch that had anything
resembling decent signal strength.

The upper part of the dial was somewhat better, but mostly due to the
quantity of signals rather than the quality. There were lots of weak
carriers, some of them with weak audio. 1566 was the only one with
decent strength.

Good - Mostly understandable by a native speaker for brief periods
1566HLAZ, woman in Japanese 1304, man in Chinese 1507

Fair - A native speaker would have recognized a few words here and there
594JOAB, talk 1516
972HLCA, man in Korean 1250, pop song 1527

Poor - incoherent mumblings in the noise and splatter
747JOIB, woman talking 1232
774JOUB, JJ talk in 770 splatter 1327
1242JOLF, weak Japanese talk 1501
1287JOHR, weak Japanese talk 1507
1314Weak audio 1505-08, sometimes sounded like singing, sometimes
like talking. Probably JOUF or DWXI or both

1323Very weak talk 1509, too weak to ID language but probably CRI
1332JOSF (presumed) weak JJ-like talk 1506
1422Weak talk in 1420 splatter 1304, sounded Japanese
1593CNR1, 1510 Chinese talk, a few syllables at a time, during
pauses in the KLFE splatter

Carriers - 558 693 738 1278 1386 1404 1413 1431 1476 1503 1557 1575 1602

[IRCA] TP 10 Feb, Victoria version

2014-02-10 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A very splashy morning, which was a pity, as a number of second
string Japanese were doing their best to be heard.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

774 JOUB man in JJ 1507UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK woman in JJ 1504UT
828 JOBB EE lessons 1419UT
954 JOKR man and woman in JJ 1521UT
972 HLCA pop mx, female vocal, followed by woman in KK 1515UT
1566 HLAZ man in CC 1507UT, north Flag best

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB man in JJ, woman in CC 1339UT
891 JOHK man in JJ //594 1450UT
1242 JOLF woman in JJ 1508UT, into androgynous pop vocal
1287 JOHR? female pop mx vocal 1458UT
1314 JOUF? woman in JJ 1526UT, clearer than the mess on the channel earlier
1332 JOSF two man talking JJ 1514UT
1503 JOUK man in excited JJ //594 1506UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

612 4QR? man and woman talking 1356UT, DU EE inflection
693 JOAB? man and woman talking, sounded like EE lessons, but no
parallels at 1431UT

873 JOGB man talking deep in splash 1424UT but //774
1422 JORF? woman and man talking, JJ inflection 1514; without the
splash would have been readable, I'm sure

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

567 864 1053 1107 1116 1134 1179 1269 1278 1323 1359 1557

best wishes,

Nick
