Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] February MW loggings

2014-02-27 Thread Chernos Saul
I think it's reasonable for any of us to correct the errors of others.
Moderators can't be expected to provide such assistance - I'd certainly want to
know of any of my own errors. I realize this every time I spot an error in my
own logbook...

Now that said, I can't help but notice this typo in Paul's correction...

WILY is in Illinois (Illinois) not Iowa (IA) ...

OK, maybe that's getting too granular ... hee hee...

Now back to DX. KGGF 690 just did an anthem at 0559 and 0600 EST sign-on ...
amazingly strong ... for those who need it, check at this time tomorrow...

Re: [IRCA] 650 UNID Mexico with audio link

2014-02-27 Thread neilkaz
Tim, was there any DU activity along with this? Cx like this (the first two
hops toward DU's) often coincide with low band DU signals. KFI can be good in
cx like this and KFMB can sometimes be had, although there's more northern
Mexican QRM on 760 than there was a decade ago.
Funny that XEDKR can provide more QRM to 2BL during brief sunrise openings than
WLW does since daylight and antenna can take out most of WLW.

73 KAZ Barrington IL and very inactive now til some snow melts and I can get to
my antennas.

Indeed Tim, you hit XETNT with the sung ID at 2:05 Radio 65 with the

[IRCA] ULR DX……New Station for the ULR LOG….810 ZNS3 Freeport, BAHAMAS!!

2014-02-27 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

After seeing Saul's log of Bahamas on 810, I've been checking the frequency
regularily to see if I could add that station to the ULR LOG. I've heard 810
Bahamas on the Big Rigs years ago…but still needed them for the ULR LOG!!

Last night I could hear something under WGY so I fiddled around with the
bearing of the SONY SRF-T615, and was able to null out WGY which produced the
station I was looking for!!!

Up to 0100 EST The Programming was a male Preacher in English, but after 0100
they switched to an EZ Listening Music Program. I was also able to parallel
this to the Live Web Feed for the ZNS Network!!!

Glad to add this one to the ULR LOG….Thanks to Saul Chernos for alerting me

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-27

2014-02-27 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

This morning's Asian propagation featured a halfhearted sunrise enhancement
boost from 1425-1445, which raised several low and high band TP's up to ghostly
levels for about 20 minutes. It wasn't bad for variety, but energetic signals
were sparse.

Once again a band which was comatose at 1405 showed signs of life with the
first appearance of daylight around 1420 as 594-JOAK, 603-China and
657-Pyongyang came out of the noise at anemic levels. 1566-HLAZ, 1575-VOA and
1593-CNR1 were doing the same thing on the high band, and it was looking like
the session might turn out to be fairly interesting. Unfortunately propagation
really didn't improve much after this first boost, and a whole collection of
low band Asians were left floundering in and out of the noise at weak levels
(558-HLQH, 594-JOAK, 603-China, 648-Russia, 657-Pyongyang and a presumed
738-BEL2). The high band Asians fared a little better as 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1
both managed brief peaks of good audio around 1445, although even they bailed
early around 1450, when the ghostly low band Asians had already packed it in.
Unlike most recent mornings neither 972-HLCA nor 1134-KBS managed any audio at
all, and even the strongest TP of the morning (1575-VOA) was only in !
audio for about 25 minutes. Overall it was a pretty mediocre session, and
devoid of any truly vibrant Asian signals.

[IRCA] Mostly Mexican MW DX to Enid OK, February 21-27, 2014

2014-02-27 Thread Glenn Hauser
These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes
utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page20

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only;
or Sony SRF-59 as specified; Nissan stock caradio as specified; FRG-7 with E-W
longwire as specified

Last week my single post showed up more than once on some lists. I don`t know
why, and I am not doing it!

** MEXICO. 1170, Feb 27 at 1323 UT, I`m getting Spanish with KFAQ Tulsa
nevertheless nullable, but making a 1.6 Hz SAH with what`s left of it. Greeting
celebrants of wedding anniversaries and playing a tune. I thought I heard a
place name ``Alton`` mentioned which had me going as a possible US station
around St Louis; 1332 ``Que Buena`` ID in passing; but 1335 Mexican federal
PSAs, and fuller ``Ke Buena 11-70 AM`` ID, which is the name of XERT, Reynosa,
Tamaulipas, 5 kW daytimer, per IRCA. 1358 recheck: still getting some Mexican
music with KFAQ nulled. Enid sunrise was 1305 UT, now hastening 10 minutes
earlier every week (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1300, Feb 23 at 1354 UT, música and ``Radio Trece, La Más Grande``,
from XEP Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1320, Feb 27 at 1338 UT, vamp music loop, 1339 two Spanish guys
chatting; CST TCs several times at 1345, 1347, 1354; barely make out a Coahuila
state PSA at 1352, vamp music loop again at 1353, more chat, so it`s the
expected closest one, 10 kW XECPN, Piedras Negras, Coahuila. Very fast SAH
thruout, probably caused by my nearest, KCLI Clinton OK, which is obviously
perpetually off-frequency during daytime groundwave dominance with its
far-right agenda (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

[IRCA] Domestic MWDX to Enid OK, February 20-27, 2014

2014-02-27 Thread Glenn Hauser
All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT`]. Rx: mostly DX-398
with internal antenna only; or Sony SRF-59 as specified; Nissan stock caradio
as specified; FRG-7 with E/W longwire as specified

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes, utility, ham, which may be found in several archives
without much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page20

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of
USA, unidentified, separated by === Within each, they are in frequency order

** OKLAHOMA. On an unID, the question arose whether KSIW 1450 Woodward OK might
have flipped away from sports. Not when I check it on caradio; at 90 miles away
I can barely hear it on groundwave, but Feb 25 at 1917 UT, sports talk and WWLS
ID in passing. It`s getting a boost from defacto powerline beverage radiation I
happen to be stopped under; otherwise it`s about as weak as co-channel KGFF
Shawnee OK at the same distance, which is playing Elvis and gives its own ID at
1924 UT. The two make a SAH of 220/minute = three and two-thirds Hz. Possibly
there is an even weaker third station in the mix, the under-powered KWHW Altus
OK. On a portable second radio I am also comparing 1450 to WWLS 98.1 and to
KWPN 640, all of which mostly ID as ``WWLS, The Sports Animal``. 1450
definitely not // 640, 98.1 definitely not // 640, but maybe 1450 // 98.1 but
far out of synch.

Then I check the website http://www.thesportsanimal.com --- nothing there about
the several stations around OK relaying it. No hits with direct internal
searches on KSIW, or separately on 1450.

There is, however, a link to Babe of the Day, like WCKY and several other
sports radio stations, WWLS feeling the responsibility to proffer soft porn to
its ``animals``, adding a much-needed visual aspect: here, bare butts are OK
but not breasts.

You may wonder how an FM station in OK, 375 miles from the nearest bend of the
Mississippi near Greenville, could have a W- call? 640 was originally a
grandfathered legacy call WNAD, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, which
stupidly sold off its educational AM station to commercial interests. It became
WWLS on Dec 7, 1981. At some point, the city of license shifted north a notch
to Moore. I don`t know the real story, but it would seem the new owners
convinced the FCC that in view of its history, this station deserved to retain
a W-call. That lasted until April 4, 2012, when it changed to KWPN. Meanwhile,
the same owners had acquired the 98.1 FM facility and made it WWLS-FM on Oct
23, 2006. It took another 5.5 years for the AM side to be demoted to KWPN (not
KEPN as I misrecalled in my original report: I never can remember the calls
since it still non-IDs as ``WWLS``, and I avoid listening to stupid sportstalk
as much as possible). Also, 640 remains
infested with IBOC, but only during daytime, and sometimes turned off
unpredictably.

Meanwhile, it would take several years for OU to get back into the public radio
field, and by then, no full-power FM channels were available (or affordable),
so KGOU became a class-A on 106.3, and had to add another one on 105.7, KROU in
Spencer, just the other side of OKC, in order to cover the city adequately.
Despite its low power, 105.7 would make it to Enid if it were not for a local
translator on 105.5 which KGOU has refused to challenge; meanwhile,
further-flung towns like Woodward get their own OU relay station, KWOU 88.1,
23.5 kW ERP, which needs some tropo enhancement to make it to Enid vs another
station in Moore, 50 kW KMSI, Oasis Network (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Regarding my ``Sports Animal`` monitoring concerning KSIW 1450
Woodward, along with WWLS-FM 98.1 The Village [OKC], and KWPN 640 Moore
(mostly? separate with ESPN net), and my finding nothing about affiliates on
the website http://www.thesportsanimal.com --- Larry Russell in Michigan, MARE
Tipsheet points out that there is a different `Sports Animal` in eastern OK:

``1550 KYAL Sapulpa OK 2:30am Sports. Heard mention of OSU website:
http://sportsanimalradio.com/ Website lists 2 FMs at top of
page 2 AMs way down at bottom of page, including AM-1550 Tulsa. [AM doesn't
matter anymore.] rare catch. 2/17 (Russell)``.

The other AM on the site is 1490 Muskogee, i.e. KBIX, which Bruce Winkelman,
driving near the site, has repeatedly found to be silent, last report from late
December. No Babe gallery on the Tulsa version!

Not clear whether these also simulcast local animalistic sports talk out of
OKC, but maybe

changes which have changed the types of stations and their authorizations.

At the moment, I'm looking for software or a web based application that
would provide the following information without having to do a lot of
 manual calculations:

1.) Gray line map showing also the tilt of the earth between solstice and
equinox. In other words, a map that provides a real time view of the earth
as it really is today. Not a simplistic representation that does not change
 with the seasons.

2.) The ability to select any two points on earth and see if they are in
 darkness or light.

3.) Domestically, I'd like a map that shows which areas are operating
under sunrise or sunset authorizations. In other words, one that will do
 the calculations for me.

 Does such a tool exist?

IMHO, I wouldn't see that aspect as being of much significance for SR/SS DX
unless
we're looking at TA or TP, which I doubt you are. That said, although it isn't
explicit,
I think with GeoClock it's 'in there'.

My recent return to serious AM DXing has only proven that I
  still have a
  lot to learn.

For instance, I spent the past day reading detailed
 reprints
  from the
NRC and IRCA publications involving Local Sunrise and
 Sunset
  DXing,
including a review of maps and calculations. Complicating
  the issue are
FCC rules changes which have changed the types of stations
  and their
  authorizations.

At the moment, I'm looking for software or a web based
  application that
would provide the following information without having to
 do
  a lot of
  manual calculations:

1.) Gray line map showing also the tilt of the earth
 between
  solstice
and equinox. In other words, a map that provides a real
 time
  view of the
earth as it really is today. Not a simplistic
 representation
  that does
  not change with the seasons.

2.) The ability to select any two points on earth and see
 if
  they are in
  darkness or light.

3.) Domestically, I'd like a map that shows which areas
 are
  operating
under sunrise or sunset authorizations. In other words, one
  that will do
  the calculations for me.

  Does such a tool exist?

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on Feb 27

2014-02-27 Thread Bruce Portzer
My morning's DX didn't resemble Gary's or Dennis' very much. It was
actually similar to yesterday. I had several weak carriers in the upper
part of the band, with 1557 putting in a good signal for a few minutes.
The only audio below 1500 kHz was on 774, which just barely poked its
nose out of the noise. The SDR recorded from 1150 to 1500, but the
only TP audio I heard was during the 1420-1445 sunrise enhancement.

Good - A native speaker would have understood most of it if the
electrical noise wasn't there
1557Taiwan, Chinese pop vocal, then woman DJ talking to man via
phone 1432

Fair - A native speaker would have understood a few words
1566HLAZ, Chinese woman brief piano music 1435
1575VOA, partial English ID 1430, then Asian talk peaking at 1433

Poor - faint murmurs among the splatter
774Faint music female talk briefly piercing the noise 1438
1512Unid pop music amid heavy 1510/1520 splatter 1442

Carriers - 594 612 747 972 1314 1332 1377 1404 1422 1503 1593 1602

[IRCA] Alberta TP/DU for 27 Feb 2014

2014-02-27 Thread Nigel Pimblett
After a very interesting day on Tuesday, it's been downhill
since then. Today I had VOA on 1575 with fair audio around 1400 but
that was the only TP audio of any description. Yesterday I didn't get a
chance to check the recording until late, and it really wasn't worth
waiting for, with only weak audio from VOA and HLAZ. Nothing even close
to audio on the lower part of the band the past few days.

[IRCA] Help with spanish on 1030

2014-02-27 Thread texas4421
On 1030 Kc I have a spanish station playing calipso music as well as other
Carribean style music. At 2315 there was a ID given by a man with a deep voice
as, Radio National nothing else but music. Also there is a nother spanish
station that fades in and out but I think that one is Cuba.

There is no KDKA or WHO.

I checked my old WRTH for 2001 and f ound there is a Radio National listed for
Colombia. Anybody else hearing this???

[IRCA] TP 27 Feb, Victoria version

2014-02-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Quite different from the norm, though nothing really
strong. Australia seemed to dominate (weakly) until 1400UT or so,
then some signs of Asiatics, including one China and a couple of
tentative Filipinos. Things collapsed all in a heap a few minutes after 1450UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not quite today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ woman in CC best on north Flag (yet again) 1444UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti man in FF 1302UT
1512 DYAB? started fading in 1430UT, pop mx, man and woman talking
sounding Tagalog, peaking 1445UT (need to be faster on the draw when
finding web streams)

1557 Taiwan likely w pop vocals 1422, 1428, 1431UT, woman in CC
1575 VoA assumed, woman in SE Asian language, echoey (more than one
path?), 1439UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

594 JOAK man talking 1419UT, JJ inflection, clinched by NHK1 interval mx 1420UT
612 4QR? man talking, DU EE inflection 1346UT
774 3LO? man talking, DU EE inflection 1231UT
774 JOUB man talking, JJ inflection 1407UT, pips also heard 1400UT
828 3GI 6 pips at 1400UT and into ABC news fanfare
972 unID man talking, maybe KK? 1319UT
1116 4BC? man talking, DU EE inflection 1246UT
1458 DZJV man preaching 1447UT, had a Tagalog sound to it.
1593 CNR1 woman in CC //6175, 1445UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

567 702 747 891 1314 1422 1494 1503

best wishes,

Nick
