Thanks for running the test. No chance here with KRKO-1380 IBOC
(even on 1390's lower sideband), and wall to wall Mexican mx on 1390 itself.

[IRCA] TP 9 Nov Victoria version

2014-11-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Pretty grim this morning. Glad I was inside, and it's not the
weather that bothered me.

774 JOUB was quite listenable at 1416, 1436 and 1458UT, but mostly
not. 747 had recognizable EE lessons at 1431UT, and 828 1287 and
1566 each made a few burbles, then subsided again.

As shall I.

best wishes,

Nick

The signals were much stronger in the first 15 minutes. Heard the sweeps and
code signals through most of the test. Last half of the test was dominated by
an oldies station, which I could never ID. Using a stock Tecsun PL-310 and

(Presumed) WHMA Anniston, AL was definitely playing UC GOS during and after
the test and was generally dominant here.

Re: [IRCA] unid UC gospel on 1390

2014-11-09 Thread William Dvorak
WGRB was not carrying UC:GOS during the WSPO DX test. Instead they were
playing an infomercial. They were playing it when I was setting up for the
test at about 2345 ELT and then repeated the same program at and 0030.
I think we in the Midwest caught a break, as hearing the code and tones
would have been much harder to hear through the music. I got the test, but
it was very faint. UC:GOS then started at 0100 ELT after the test was over.

[IRCA] WSPO Test

2014-11-09 Thread James Renfrew
Jim Renfrew, Clarendon NY

Nothing spoken was heard, but I did hear bits of Morse Code and sweep tones
throughout the hour. I was also hearing a solid hour of Crosby, Stills and
Nash, near 0100 the audio broke up into skipping tracks, and there were no
IDs at the top of the hour. This was the dominant signal, topping CBS
Sports Radio. At around 0105 the music popped in again and then went
silent. Anyone else hearing this?

Re: [IRCA] 1390 WSPO Charleston, SC DX Test imminent

2014-11-09 Thread Brian Rachford
Listened for the full hour, but just XEKT, presumed KTLX (did get "Radio
Nueva Vida" slogan at end), a very faint sports station for less than a
minute (maybe KHOB), and one very faint English talk station for short
intervals a couple times. One interesting thing was that around 05:51:30
UT, I saw several very faint traces on the waterfall display running from
1390 down to the edge of the display at 1381 (and maybe beyond) over the
course of a few seconds each with several seconds in between
(approximately). Looked sort of like an ionosonde trace on SW, but
continuous in frequency. Probably not relevant and nothing audible.

Rick,

Not really, it comes and goes, not dominant, but Chicago seems likely. But if I
hear it tonight, I am sure it will pop in again on R/S.
Thanks.

Pat, is there any way you can stream the signal from WGRB in Chicago to compare
that to what you're hearing? That's a somewhat common station here at night,
and they've been UC gospel for ages, going back to when they were WGCI.

Good work, Patrick.

So far I've heard nothing of the test here near San Diego, CA. I'm just using
a SRF-M37W and Select-A-Tenna, and also having XEKT & KLTX practically in my
back yard doesn't help. (I also got a late start & didn't start listening til
about 15 past.)
I was hoping I'd at least hear sweep tones, but one of my two SS pests is
sometimes playing effects that sound a bit like rapid sweeps, like 6 or 8 per
second for a couple seconds a couple times.

Easy copy on the car radio (All DX antennas are currently down for
summer repairs. Yes, I'm behind schedule!) Just outside of Birmingham,
AL in Central, Alabama. Recorded it on my smartphone, while driving to
Taco Bell for a late dinner.

Test began with a male announcer, indicating a special "Worldwide Test"
for AM DX listeners. Nice touch. The callsign in slow Morse Code,
followed by lots of sweep tones, a telephone off-hook sounder, then a
game show instrumental theme (Matchgame? Password?), followed by a
firebell/alarm sound effectthen repeated the entire test.

The game show music seemed longer than normal. Possibly looped?

Great test, and fun to listen to! Thanks to JD Stephens of Hampton Cove,

2014-11-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Sweep tones at 0001.30 followed by short bursts of tones. Then another set of
sweep tones at 0019.15. Nothing else noted so far from the test as far as I can
tell, but 1390 is an interesting frequency tonight with a UC Gospel, two SS, a
station playing old Christmas music with Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante.

[IRCA] Grayland, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-9

2014-11-09 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

Murphy's Law made a serious ocean beach comeback this morning as heavy rain and
wind combined with an Asian propagation drop off. The big gun TP's were still
at huge levels, but the nasty weather seemed to scare away anything remotely
exotic.

Although the Asian big guns sounded vibrant during their sunset period around
0900 propagation seemed to hit the skids shortly thereafter, with signals
greatly reduced by 1200. The weather had also turned nasty during the same
period, and my ocean beach setup at 1300 required plastic tie wraps for the FSL
antenna base and rain covers for the radios, antenna and MP3 recorder. Despite
this serious hassle the second and third tier Asians seemed to have little
interest in showing up, and I ended up recording S9+ signals from the likes of
828-JOBB and 1566-HLAZ (which I had ignored yesterday, in the DXing bonanza).
After a serious search I came across weak NHK2 English lessons on 1593-- pretty
routine DX, but just about the best that I could do in the wind, rain and
noise. With conditions so awful at 1400 I decided to pack up everything and
head back to Room 11 of the Grayland Motel, which at least was warm and dry.
Setting up the 17" FSL on its PVC base next to the Room 11 window was a
desperate measure, which resulted in a serious reduction of Asian signal
strength compared to the beach (and a serious increase in RF noise pollution).
Despite this I was able to track down a fair to good signal from 1593-CNR1
(mixing with the NHK2 Chinese lessons at the time), a fairly good 1134 mix of
KBS and JOQR (but nothing like yesterday), and the NHK2 sign off chimes on
774-JOUB at 1424. From what I could tell during the nasty weather the middle
and high band had most of the limited action this morning, with low band
stations like 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang very anemic at best.  The Japanese and
Korean big guns did survive the propagation slowdown quite well, of course,
with the usual ocean coast blowtorch signals on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 972,
1053, 1566 and 1575. They weren't exactly what I was looking for, though, after
dealing with serious rain, wind and the Grayland Motel's little quirks (like no
paved driveways, phones or cleaning service)..

1134  JOQR   Tokyo, Japan    Recorded inside Room 11 at 1408, the giggly
Japanese station is at a fair to good level mixing with KBS and the Grayland
Motel's RF pollution. Quite a bit more anemic than yesterday
http://www.mediafire.com/listen/6aefepy3gk8a3gn/1134-JOQR-KBSmix-1408z110914PL380.MP3

**1566  HLAZ   Jeju, S. Korea   For those who wonder what the big gun Asians
sound like on the ocean coast, here is a typical sample. The Korean Christian
broadcaster is still testing the crunch resistance of my PL-380 Ultralight with
its Japanese service at an S9+++ level at 1325-- despite the propagation drop
off
http://www.mediafire.com/listen/q08guomqhl54ovq/1566-HLAZ-1325z110914PL380.MP3

mixing with CNR1 later on in the session

1593  CNR1   Changzhou, China  (another Room 11 recording)  Brief good-level
signal at 1349; mixing with the NHK2 synchros (and the Grayland Motel RF hash)
later on

Re: [IRCA] 1390 WSPO Charleston, SC DX Test imminent

2014-11-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Hopefully I can get a re-log on this one. I got them under R/S back in the 90s
mixing with the ME test, but conditions were amazing during that time. Thanks
Paul and all who had something to do with the test. 1390 off the East beverage
is not a bad frequency, as I have no powerhouses, but the conditions have to be
there.

Re: [IRCA] Grayland expedition

2014-11-09 Thread d1028gary
Yes, Chuck, this would have been around 2009, when the "E100 Slider" was the
hottest modified Ultralight around. Walt made an incredibly detailed report of
New Zealand station formats, and posted it on the IRCA list.
The "E100 Slider" had a sliding loopstick coil, which required careful
adjustment for peak sensitivity. But when carefully adjusted, it was the most
sensitive portable around. It also had a transplanted Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter
(Guy Atkins' suggestion)-- which cost more than the radio itself :-)

Thanks for your generous comment, Nick, but I really think that Walt would be
much more deserving of such an award than me.

Anyone who can stand on the deck of a cruise ship in the South Pacific and

I agree with Nick. Crazy things we do for DX. My favourite is climbing a
60 foot tree in a raging storm in our late Fall in order to get cell
reception so I could call Radio St Helena. Those were the days! More
recently, Vlad Titarev and I braved hurricane force winds to DX from my
truck at Rose Spit, Haida Gwaii! Happy memories indeed! 73, Walt Salmaniw

[IRCA] Grayland expedition

2014-11-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
For those of us sitting in the warm listening to not very much, your
exploits in the pursuit of ultimate DX must qualify you for some sort
of award Gary.

I did stuff like that about 30 years ago, hi.

best wishes,

Nick

Grayland, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-8 (Conclusion)

Hello All,

An impromptu weekend run to Grayland kicked off with a bang this
morning with Japanese, Korean and Chinese stations all pounding in
for a wild 4 hour session. A new 17" FSL antenna was set up near the
picnic table at the end of Grayland Beach road, and it managed to
track down at least 15 Asians which pegged the PL-380's S/N readout.

The deserted beach was clear and cold at my 1115 UTC (0315 local)
start time, but the big gun Japanese and Koreans on 594, 747, 972,
1134 and 1566 had already reached S9 levels an hour before inside my
Grayland Motel Room 11 ($65 a night, with absolutely no frills).
Hurrying to the cold beach I brought along the 30" loopstick
ICF-2010 spotting receiver, 12" Longwave FSL and the new 17"
DXpedition FSL-.

and four hours in the 41 degree cold and wind had taken its toll.
