Re: [IRCA] 1566 off this morning

2015-01-22 Thread Mauno Ritola
That's right: I checked some older files and seems that FEBC Chinese has
dropped religious English language lesson, that used to be between
1730-1830. Seems they are also on 1566.000 kHz instead of former .003.
They have a short break also earlier at 1830, when they switched from
265 to 352°.

I imagine you are still "seeing" the carrier Walt, after it fades

disappears. Might be worth running a narrowband Perseus file after
the general excitement is finished?

Just in case you were looking for HLAZ 1566, they were actually absent
before 17:00 today.  First time I ever missed them.  Back on when
rechecked

an hour later.  73,  Walt. (Masset)

Re: [IRCA] What Happened to Houston's Disney Station - KMIC 1590?

2015-01-22 Thread James Niven
Stephen,

According to Radio Insight dated 11/04/2014:

"Radio Disney has sold off the first of its pending 23 divestitures as it
sells 1590 KMIC Houston to DAIJ Media for $3.2 million.

The buyer, headed by Rafael and Ruben Villarreal, owns four other AMs and
one FM translator in the Houston market: 880 KJOZ Conroe, 980 KQUE
Rosenburg, 1380 KRCM Shenandoah, and 1460 KBRZ/95.1 K236AR Missouri City.
DAIJ Media also owns three LPTV's, while the Villarreal brothers are also
the principal owners of five non-commercial FM's under the Aleluya
Broadcasting Network umbrella."

I see on StationIntel.com, KMIC is silent at present. I think we will see
Spanish Religion coming very soon!!

Okay, so I admit my being slow on the draw on this, but I've just now
noticed the past 3 nights that KMIC 1590 has not been heard at my QTH in SE
Houston.

I knew they were facing possible sale, but I haven't seen or heard anything
about that happening.

Did they allow their license to expire? Did they just go dark? Inquiring
minds want to know.

[IRCA] Interesting TP from Arizona this morning

2015-01-22 Thread Brian Rachford
Had audio on 1566, 1593, and probably 1557 with my 6-foot tuned loop (the
23-foot vertical and phaser weren't helping). May have had a carrier on
1242. Enough going on that I will need to check the I/Q recording. (I
rarely do I/Q recordings in the first place with the relatively narrow
bandwidth of my tuned system.) Nothing on the low end like 747 or 774 the
times I checked. Ended pretty much right at local sunset at 1434 UT.

[IRCA] TP DX, yes, really

2015-01-22 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Walt's conditions seem to have moved down south overnight. It
sounds like October on the band this morning at 1445UT, not just the
NHK powerhouses, powerhousing, but things like Japanese talk on 1179...

That's going to be one interesting recording.

best wishes,

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 1-22

2015-01-22 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

Thanks to Dennis for his lengthy TP-DXing report from Kalama.

As luck would have it, I was unable to chase Asian DX this morning because of
appointments at 1530 and 1545 UTC. Before leaving the house, however, I noticed
that conditions were fairly good around 1430, so I set up the 15" FSL antenna,
CC Skywave Ultralight and MP3 recorder in the back yard, tuned to 1566 kHz
(which I thought had the best chance of strong TP reception). At the MP3
recorder's 1509 start time 1566-HLAZ had a fair signal in and out, as did
1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1. While I was gone there was no chance to check out TP-DX
on the low and middle bands, but 1566-HLAZ came through with good signals off
and on from 1515-1550 with its Chinese Christian service. As for all the other
DX that I missed, well, tomorrow is another day :-)

1566  HLAZ  Jeju, S. Korea   Good strength Chinese Christian music in and out
at 1538
http://www.mediafire.com/listen/e278d81ibdo4y57/1566-HLAZ-1538z012215CCSW.MP3

[IRCA] Mostly Mexican MW DX to Enid OK, January 15-22, 2015

2015-01-22 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without
much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page30

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 or PL-880 with internal
antenna only; Nissan stock caradio as specified; FRG-7 with E-W longwire as
specified

** CUBA [and non]. 530, Jan 16 at 0440-0455, enjoying the music from R.
Enciclopedia, approaching Enid from OKC on caradio, and no sign of ``K530AM``
Vance AFB TIS on 530, even in downtown Enid. The thing has been getting weaker
and weaker with its endless useless loops of irrelevant PSAs such as what to do
in a hurricane. Had been hard to hear even in the daytime; solar powered? Cuban
is playing knockoff instrumentals of ``I`ll Only Love You``, ``Whiter Shade of
Pale``, etc., with soft-spoken YL DJ leading up to midnight. So comforting
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1757, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 640, Jan 17 at 0241, best signal from E/W in full null of Okie SSE,
rapid national Mexican news in Spanish referring to Iguala, CNDH, whales, with
stingers; 0243 music bit, swishes, 0245 interview about violence toward women.
No doubt it`s XEJUA in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, listed by IRCA as with Milenio
TV audio simulcast, 5 kW daytimer. Cantú agrees on daytime, nombre as BM Radio,
which is a major group in the state. So when do they sign off? WRTH shows power
as 5 without a d, implying it is really full-time. During this, hardly any KFI
to be heard underneath (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, Jan 17 at 0247, live Spanish coverage of a SBG, looping NE/SW,
crowd roars, announcer has to compete with loud PA from the venue; 0247
mentions ``Dorados de Chihuahua`` which is enough for me to conclude it`s XEACB
in Ciudad Delicias, 3/1 kW per IRCA, breaking from otherwise ROMantic music
format; Cantú agrees on power but WRTH 2015 shows 5 kW fulltime.

However, somewhat stale Wikipedia entries indicate Dorados de Chihuahua were
both a baseball and a basketball team, but both were going to move elsewhere
out of state. However2, further searching to latinbasket.com indicates this
name is still active as BKB in Chih and I suppose even in Mexico, baloncesto is
more likely than béisbol in January (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Quick check of regular sunrise-skip XEs, Jan 22 at 1340-1345 in case
some are lost to the FM transition: definitely still 650 XETNT with 6:40 TC and
``agenda de hoy``; 730 XEHB with joint ID for 107.1 FM; presumed 870 XETAR with
announcements in Spanish; and 710 XEDP, Spanish not off-frequency (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 900, Jan 19 at 0632, YL jazz singer in English dominates, loops toward
Cuba, and soon confirmed as such by // 890 with WLS nulled. So both are R.
Progreso, but 900 is much stronger. So how do we explain this? 890 is
WRTH-listed as 200 kW in Ciego de Ávila, while 900 is only 50 kW in further
Holguín. It would be nice to know about Cuban MW direxional patterns, if any.
Is there any source for such info? Don`t bother asking Arnie (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 970, Jan 19 around 0600, 0630 and 1345 chex, nothing detectable from
XEJ Ciudad Juárez which used to be regular; just US stations in English. Now
like John Wilkins, CO, I also wonder what`s become of XEJ. Is it completely
off, or QRP? Supposedly 10/5 kW, 24h NSP per IRCA. A DXer in El Paso could tell
us (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1757, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1550, Jan 17 at 0237, bouncy Mexican music from NE/SW, 0238 ``La
Rancherita, 15-50 AM``, ad, then losing to something in English. IRCA Log shows
it`s our closest, XENU in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, 5000/250 watts --- and WRTH
2015, Cantú both agree on all this! Quite a coincidence. But is it really on
night power? Both ND (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1566, Jan 22 at 1335-1340 UT, I am straining to detect a
trans-Pacific carrier, and there may be one at imagination level; following
neighbor Richard Allen`s catch of HLAZ, South Korea, 48 hours earlier; it`s the
250 kW FEBC station on Jeju, presumably with a variety of antenna
configurations since over the 24 hours it broadcasts in Korean, Chinese,
Japanese and Russian (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT`]. Rx: mostly DX-398 or

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of
USA, unidentified, separated by === Within each, they are in frequency order

** OKLAHOMA. 530, various daytime chex Jan 16, `K530AM`, Vance AFB TIS is
indeed off, no longer even a weak signal audible. Just as well, as the thing
never met 1% of its potential (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1757, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 530, Jan 21 at 1940 UT I have driven down to the Visitors Center
(with a number of mounted aircraft exhibits outside) at the north side of Vance
AFB, and even here there is no `K530AM` to be heard. I am not pursuing this
with the powers that be at Vance, since they may not have noticed it`s off, and
I`d rather have it gone so R. Enciclopedia et al. are unimpeded. Indeed the
electronic sign beside Southgate on the way to Vance gate, still flashes ``TUNE
INTO / 530 AM`` along with hours of various gates.

On the way earlier at 1930 UT Jan 21, I make a point of driving along the next
E-W street to the north, Rupe, where there are hi-voltage lines/de facto
Beverage antennas? Which re-radiate MW signals along with the noise and used to
mix with K530AM, but never identified. I park at one peak point and monitor 530
for a while. It doesn`t take long to recognize the main audio is just local
KGWA // 960, with an ag report. Weaker audio I realize must be from our other
local, KCRC 1390, since, guess what, 1390 minus 430 = 960 and 960 minus 430 =
530. In other words, a leapfrog between these two which are not at the same
site, with the assistance of OG&E [local electric company, no gas except maybe
partly to generate the juice].

** OKLAHOMA. 580-720, Jan 15 at 2158 UT in NE OKC on caradio, KWPN Moore, 5/1
kW transmitter site on south side of OKC, is splattering out to this range,
much worse the closer to fundamental 640. So it bothers or blox groundwave from
WIBW 580, KMKI 620, KSKY 660, KGGF 690, KGNC 710, to name a few. IBOC is also
on, but the splatter includes extremely distorted analog audio. I suspect out
of whack IBOC is causing this. Fortunately have never heard it this bad in
Enid. No other OKC market AM signal is such a mess (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 640-700, Jan 20 at 2036 UT, KWPM Moore splatter is audible up to
60 kHz above fundamental, even in Enid, like I was hearing in OKC last week,
altho not as strong here of course. It`s enough to QRM 690 KGGF Coffeyville KS;
and 700 KHSE Wylie (Dallas) TX which runs only one sesquikW. Also extends below
640, but harder to detect there with several strong stations. KWPM IBOC is also
on, but the splatter is more analogic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

While at the Vance AFB VC in Enid, since it`s a quiet location without overhead
powerlines, I perform a quick MW bandscan, including:

590-640, splatter from KWPM Moore can now be detected also on the low side,
QRMing Omaha 590, Kansas City 610, and probably on 580 too but WIBW is strong
enough to block it (and audibilize the usual weak groundwave signal under,
which must be remnant of 500-watt KRFE Lubbock TX). Other non-Oklahoma logs are
filed under USA (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1120, Jan 19 at 1329-1332+ UT, open carrier looping
toward Tulsa, while KMOX and presumed KTXW are mixing when it`s nulled. Tired
of waiting for KEOR to start modulating, but 1330 UT is the official Catoosa
sunrise in January (Feb: 1315 UT). KEOR is now a regular reliable groundwave
daytime signal. I think it`s still religious, but I see in FCC that it`s now
owned by La Zeta 95.7 of Springdale AR, not to be confused with OKC-based KTUZ
1270. Why is Zeta such a popular radio handle in Spanish? Likes to be
associated with narcotrafficking?

1120, Jan 19 at 2039 UT, KEOR Catoosa is again, or more likely *still* open
carrier dead air, as noted earlier today after sunrise time of 1330 UT. Still
so at 2210 UT on caradio now that KMOX is propagating, making a SAH of
320/minute = 5 and a third Hz. So my earlier remark ``KEOR is now a regular
reliable groundwave daytime signal`` may have jinxed it. Not to be confused
with another Tulsa suburb, Jenks [sic, no X].

Re: [IRCA] Interesting TP from Arizona this morning

2015-01-22 Thread Brian Rachford
I've had more of a look at the SDR files for this morning's Asian opening.
My tuned loop has some broadband coverage, especially when operating at the
high end of the BCB, but I was optimized for ~1550 kHz, so the actual
conditions below ~1400 were better than implied by my recordings. I have
local graveyarders within 2 miles at 1450 and 1490, so I'm being fairly
conservative when talking about carriers because I do sometimes get spurs,
plus other possible QRM from being indoors. The second of two SDR files
ran from 1415-1438UT and had the best action. The only audio worth
listening to was from 1566 HLAZ. There was a nice overall peak ~10 minutes
before the 1434UT sunrise and considerable fading after that.

1242 good carrier at times
1287 maybe brief audio at 1422UT
1314 good carrier around 1424UT
1332 weak carrier
1404 possible very weak carrier
1422 strong carrier at times, maybe audio at 1427UT (weak audio in first
file)
1467 possible carrier at times
1503 possible weak carrier
1557 possible audio around 1427UT
1566 frequent audio; music at 1428UT
1575 weak carrier at times, but a lot of splatter from The Mouse
1584 possible carrier at times, but splatter again
1593 weak audio at least around 1425UT

[IRCA] Another great TP day

2015-01-22 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Had another wonderful session this morning with my highlight being the JJ
weather transmissions on 1689! Like shooting fish in a barrel with site
after site checking in. Also noted them on 1683.5 which isn't listed in my
PAL. All used USB + carrier only. 73, from Masset. Walt

2015-01-22 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Sorry for the typo. Chuck was correct. Reception was very good with many
of them and easy to ID with identical formats. Only 50 watts. PAL was 100%
accurate too. Perhaps I could email each site for verification! 73, Walt

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 22 January 2015

2015-01-22 Thread Nigel Pimblett
As others have noted, Walts conditions moved south today, and this
was the the most interesting day of the year. Someone mentioned it was
like October, and I'd have to agree. I had quite a bit of action on the
X-band from Australia, something I generally never get in January, but
quite often in Sep/Oct. I listened from 1430 to 1500, and in general
the upper band was better, but it began to fade by 1450, whereas the
lower band stations (mostly only carriers) improved after that. Apart
from the audio listed below, lots of carriers, with a number close to
audio. Oddly enough the Japanesee on 747/774/828 never reached audio,
and weren't even overly strong as carriers.

594 JOAK, Japan Woman in Japanese at 1443. Pretty weak, but
still the best in weeks (months?)

693 JOAB, Japan Fist noted with a poor signal at 1445, with
woman speaking, but gradually rose to good by
1455, again, the best for ages.

801 unIDTraces of music noted at 1446. No idea who
this might be.

1242JOLF, Japan Woman talking in Japanese at 1445. Mostly
poor to fair, but up to good for brief spikes.

1422JORF, Japan Weak, with talk in Japanese by a man at 1445

1566HLAZ, Korea First observed at 1433, then mostly fair
throughout the session.

1575VOA, Thailand Fair to good with woman in Burmese at 1435.

1584unIDTraces of music at 1444.

1593unIDTraces of audio at 1436, but never got any
better.

1611unIDTraces of man talking at 1451.

1629unIDTraces of audio at 1440.

1638unIDTalk by a man at 1449. Too weak to be sure of
language, but Arabic would be my first guess.

1701.07 R.Brisvaani, Australia
Presumed the one with south Asian music at
1444. Another station on 1701.02 rose atop
briefly at 1449 with traces of music.

73,

Nigel Pimblett

[IRCA] TPs in Seattle on January 22

2015-01-22 Thread Bruce Portzer
As others have said, TP conditions were quite good this morning. My
unattended recording 1425-1601 UTC showed fairly consistent reception up
until about 1535-40 UT at which point most signals dropped out rather
quickly. The 972 Korean, however, was still doing well when the
recording ended at 1601.

The low band Japanese stations were the winners today, with good signals
from the regulars and bits of audio from a couple of seldom heard
stations. With one or two exceptions, the upper part of the dial was
sub par - HLAZ-1566 was anemic at best and VOA-1575 was just a carrier.

GOOD - mostly understandable by a native speaker
594JOAK, 1500, 3+1 pips then man with news
693JOAB, good at times, esp 1447 male talk, 1540 "JOAB NHK Tokyo
Dai-ini Hoso Des" then NA & chimes
774JOUB, good 1500 with pips, then woman mentioned NHK Hoso
something & intro'd next program with weird calliope-like music, weaker
1540 with NA sign-off
828JOBB, woman in Japanese 1459, music, then pips and start of next
program //774

972HLCA, 1459 vocal music, anmt by woman, pips, then KBS mention & news

FAIR - words and phrases understandable by a native speaker
702NHK2, music //693, faint ID, then NA 1540
747JOIB, JJ talk //747 1523
1332JOSF, Japanese male faded up briefly 1530
1503JOUK, pips & news 1500, theme from the movie "Flashdance" 1531 //594
1566HLAZ, woman in Chinese 1532 briefly rising up, mostly poor
signal otherwise

POOR - recognizable program content
567JOIK, 1455 traces of talk //594
612JOLK, 1500, partial very weak time pips //594
666JOBK, 1445 serious-sounding JJ male //594
729JOCK, 1500 faint pips, 1509 woman //594
837JOQK, 1459 faint music, 1500 pips
873JOGB, 1432, man & woman w/English lesson //774, good signal but
horrific KIXI splash

981bits of talk 1523, probably CNR
1134bits of what sounded like woman talking, possibly time pips 1500
amid much splatter

1377Inst music 1531, probably CNR
1386pips & music 1500 //774 mostly buried in KRKO splash
1422Japanese woman 1532
1467NHK2, 1531 Japanese folk song very poor in domestic splash //774
