Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-24

2015-02-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I noticed that mine and Gary's reception of VoA
were at the same time, so thought I'd upload a
recording for
comparison:
http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/listen/VoA1575_20150224_1438.wav
which starts just about the time the man starts talking in Gary's recording.

Mind you, I didn't hear much else of what he heard in the upper band.

And now, at 0730UT, 774 is starting to come in,
//with a weaker 747. It's been awhile since that happened.

best wishes,

Nick

through some splatter around 1438. From that
point on everything seemed to go downhill, with
594 diving into the noise around 1450 and the

[IRCA] Impromptu DX Test on 1560?

2015-02-24 Thread Les Rayburn
Out late tonight running errands, listening to 1560 KHz for more new
ones. Began hearing bits of Morse Code at about 10 WPM around 1:05 AM
CST. About half an hour later, I'm now hearing sweep tones of the kind
commonly used in our tests.

Anyone aware of a station during transmitter testing tonight on this
frequency?

[IRCA] TP 24 Feb Victoria version

2015-02-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Definitely grubbing in the dirt to get any DX this morning

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

nope

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1575 VoA? surprisingly, man in SE Asian language 1438UT...along with
972, nearest to any sunrise enhancement today.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

972 HLCA man in KK 1443UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 man talking, too murky to guess 1345UT
738 pop mx 1311UT
747 JOIB recognizable lively mx at end of CC lessons 1359UT followed by pips
774 woman talking 1435UT, JJ?
828 JOBB end of EE lesson mx 1259UT, pips 1300UT
1476 woman talking 1433UT, if NHK2, then no parallels available
1566 HLAZ bits of piano mx and woman talking; end of JJ program 1343UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

819 1008 1026 1098 1179 1386 1593 (a mess; one at 1592.967?)

Re: [IRCA] Drake R8

2015-02-24 Thread Patrick Martin
Chris,

That I did not know. The tech I talked to at the time told me that Drake would
continue to repair the R8s until they could not get the parts. But at least
John Kriner is continuing with the repairs. Hopefully mine will last many more
years. It lasted 19 years before I got it repaired and that was 2011. I guess
it has been 4 years now. Time flies. The R75 seems like the best choice now,
unless a DXer wants to spend a mint, if they want an analog receiver.

Re: [IRCA] Midwest US unIDs

2015-02-24 Thread Saul Chernos
Rick and Paul, thanks for listening. I guess it's Mansfield and not Minnesota
(given that it struck me as odd to have anyone say "Minnesota area." WMAN is a
common enough visitor but that's one less unresolved catch..
WRDN 1430 WI Durand is new here. Hard to get much with KQZQ dominating when
anything is coming in from the west (and already working underneath strong
semi-local CHKT).
Paul, I don't collect QSLs anymore, not since the early 80s. But thanks for
thinking of that.

I have two of your unIDs solved, Saul... :) 1400 -- the ad is for the
Richland Academy, and at the :10 mark, you can hear "Mansfield area". So it's
WMAN in Ohio. 1430 -- the "AM 1340 KROS in Clinton IA" is an in-show plug for
KROS, which carries "It's Polka Time!" with host Craig Ebelon Sundays. That is
the syndicated polka program to which you were tuned in at the time. I went to
the show's website, and, lo and behold, WRDN in Durand, Wisconsin (where they
know ALL about polkas!) carries the show on Saturday morning at the time you
heard it. The 1360 is a bit of a stumper. I will keep working at it, unless
someone else out there can beat me to the punch and ID it first. :) 73,Rick

We've heard a a decent handful - see the Grayland Master Log. It's been a while
since we heard some, which I attribute to the very northern path and that we've
been in the bad part of the solar cycle for those paths.

[IRCA] 2015 Ultralight Radio Shootout Article in DXM

2015-02-24 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Thanks very much to Phil for publishing the first 9 pages of the 2015
Ultralight Radio Shootout article in the current issue of the IRCA DX Monitor.

For those who read the article and wondered what happened to the rest of the
C.Crane Skywave and Eton Traveler III reviews (and the Shootout portion of the
competition), that article was only Part One of a two part series. The
conclusion should be in the next DXM issue.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-24

2015-02-24 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

1575-VOA was the star of a session dominated by the high band this morning,
managing its best signal of 2015 (very good) around 1438 UT. The low and middle
band regulars were well down from their usual strength, however, and all of the
Asians were long gone before 1500.

At the 1420 start of my session only 594-JOAK was in audio on the low band
(with fair peaks in and out), but the usual Asians on 603, 693, 747 and 972
were struggling to get out of the noise. The high band sounded much more
promising, with the regulars on 1503 (apparently JOUK), 1566, 1575 and 1593
already in and out of the splatter with fair signals. Around 1430 both 1575-VOA
and1593-CNR1 got significant daylight boosts up to intermittent good levels,
with the Thailand big gun managing to reach its best level of the new year
(very good) briefly through some splatter around 1438. From that point on
everything seemed to go downhill, with 594 diving into the noise around 1450
and the high band regulars around 1455. The usual low band performers 603-HLSA
and 693-JOAB barely managed a whimper during the session, as the high band
delivered the only energetic signals of the morning.

1575  VOA   Ban Rassom, Thailand    Female and male Asiatic language speech
with very good peaks (through some splatter) at 1438

Hi Patrick and all,

Drake ceased repair operations of all amateur and shortwave radios back
in July 2012. A former employee, John Kriner, apparently will work on
the R8 series, at least for now, through his private business. Looks
like you got in under the wire.

2015-02-24 Thread Mauno Ritola
I suppose you speak about any Russian MW stations, not just R. Rossii's?
I have been able to confirm only SIX of them so far. There may be a
couple active in Far East Russia, but no one has reported them. 810 kHz
should be off, or has someone heard it in February?

http://wrth.com/updates_national.html
R. Rossii has closed most of its medium wave transmitters. Only the
following transmitters have been reported on the air after 31 January
: Matveyevka 936 kHz, Ust-Kan/Ulagan 1350/1353 kHz, Buguruslan 1395
kHz and Turochak/Ust-Koksa 1440 kHz.

them in Grayland. Now, the Russian MW channels appear to have all left

the

air, at least the ones we have been used to hearing, leaving a few low
power outlets only. 73,...Walt

Re: [IRCA] Fwd: [mwcircle] Mongolia on Long Wave: Paper about reception in Germany & Austria

Walt,

On some high gain Longwave-optimized FSL antennas in September of 2011 both
164-Mongolia and 209-Mongolia showed up occasionally here in Puyallup, but
neither one was ever very strong. On only one occasion was I able to confirm
the parallel- just barely. I know that Steve R. also received both of these
occasionally when he was at his previous location in Elgin (with the 1600' long
wire), but I don't think that he ever had them very strong, either.

This recording of fair-level female vocal music from 209-Mongolia was parallel
with a poor-level 164 signal at the time, and was just about the strongest that
either one of these has ever managed here in Puyallup (the weak morse code is
from the now defunct beacon, 206-PWT in Bremerton, WA).

Losing the Rossii Longwaves on 153, 171, 180, 189, 234 and 279 kHz wiped out
95% of the Longwave TP possibilities here on the west coast.
