[IRCA] unID statoin on 1320 during auroral conditions

2015-04-05 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Hi all,
Still going over my recording from the auroral conditions in March.
This is a tough one, which I first thought was a Mexican, but now I'm
sure I hear Nuevo Mexico during an ID, so am thinking it may be KRDD.
I'd appreciate anyone with better ears, or who might be familiar
with the station's ID having a listen.

Thanks,

Nigel Pimblett

Re: [IRCA] KAAY 1090 is back; is KARN 920?

2015-04-05 Thread Rick Dau
I actually noticed KAAY back on Friday evening just before Midnight Central
Time with a program hosted by Roy Masters, then a short legal ID. Like Glenn,
I'm curious to know what their current power is -- I've seen conflicting
sources saying either 10 KW non-directional or 5 KW non-directional, based upon
the STAs that have been extended several times over the past few years. Friday
night, it sounded to me like the latter was the case.73,Rick DauSouth

KAAY came back on sometime early yesterday afternoon and KARN was back on
sometime late afternoon/early evening yesterday, as reported by a DXer near
Little Rock. 1250 which had picked up KARN programming is not back to
simulcasting KIPR Power 92 Jamz.

Little Rock is back on the air after copper theft! Also making 3 Hz SAH; maybe
that`s with KVOP. The KAAY signal is not strong at all, and would dearly like
to know what power and antenna pattern they are on, probably by STA. Nominally
it`s tight toward Manitoba and Yucatán and not much signal over here anyway.

Ooops, the ``powerful`` KAAY.com site is for sale; it`s really

But there is nothing obvious about its death and resurrexion. Full programming

[IRCA] TP 5 Apr Victoria version

2015-04-05 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Definitely a bit more action today,

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ choir singing, then man leading prayers 1332UT; best on North Flag

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

738 Tahiti vocal pop music en francais 1313-16UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1287 JOHR? two women talking, Japanese inflection, then into pop
music and it faded up to this level 1154UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 JOAK? woman talking 1323UT; weak considering carrier strength
747 woman and man talking, Japanese inflection 1226UT
1053 Korean jammer 1243UT
1206 Yanbian judging by the off channel carrier; woman talking, very
bassy so not much readability. The only other overseas audio on the
band at this time was on 738, so Yanbian would be an odd visitor.

1377 vocal music and man talking, best on north Flag 1327UT.

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Re: [IRCA] Frankenradio

2015-04-05 Thread T. Hills

 Thanks Brian,

I opened up the SDR out of curiosity. pretty sure it's the same A/D
chip, etc as the other variants.

One of the disadvantages of using it as an IF/detector behind the R71-A
is that I can only see about 300KHz at a time and anything more than
10KHz from center is attenuated. That's also a good thing. I've got the
PIEXX memory in the Icom so it tunes down to DC and I get WWVB clear
enough to copy with just a 28' vertical and 43 mix Balun. The SDR does
dig out signals too weak to get audio on the Icom not to mention the
better selectivity.

Since the second mixer level is controlled by AGC I might have to do
offset tuning to dig out a weak signal adjacent to a strong one but with
the narrow filter engaged it doesn't seem to be an issue so far. 1320 is
the strongest signal here so if I can pull 1330 out of the mud it
shouldn't be a problem.

You could always pick up a P4 XP box fairly cheap if you want to upgrade
and I've seen dual cores going fairly cheap. The problem with
application development for Mac and Linux is the same as it's always
been. Most of the world runs on Windows/Intel and a lot of hardware
manufacturers don't want the expense of having to write and maintain 3
versions of software.

Tim,

I got back into DXing via the inexpensive SDR route myself last summer.
I've also heard (no pun intended) that the RTL.SDR unit is rather deaf
on
the low end. Instead, I'm using a cheap RTL-SDR (dash not dot)
dongle
with a separate upconverter to get LW/MW/SW and that option may
currently
be the best way to do SDR under $100. But, it sounds like you've done
some
good mods. I'm lucky in that my local stations are low power, but I
need
filters or a tuned antenna for optimal performance due to the low
dynamic
range. I'd have a more expensive SDR by now, but OS X and Linux
software

support for anything higher-end is pathetic.

Good luck and welcome back to DXing.

After a long hiatus I'm getting back into MWDX/NDB chasing. Due to family

Right now the antenna is just some wire and a balun and I have the parts
to put the remote tuned loop V2.0, a modified Lear 2320-A, together as time
permits. Add a hombrew phasor it should work pretty well. I have 2 of the
2320-As the first will be for MW and the second will be set up for LW.
Nothing really new there but an upgrade from my last antenna system.

What is new is the rig at least for me. I wanted to try SDR but couldn't
justify spending a Month's rent and utilities on a Perseus and most of the
budget SDRs didn't seem to be very good. At that I did wind up spending
US$50 on an RTL.SDR. After a Month in transit from China I finally got it..
It seems to do OK with strong signals but the lack of dynamic range (50dB)
makes it poor for DX. I did make a few catches but nothing new or
noteworthy. Part of that is the antenna but it overloads too easily. I was
planning on tapping the IF of the homebrew but I'm still short a couple of
 parts for it.

Then I remembered the scope output on my R71-A. It worked, sort of. The
output from the first mixer (70.4515MHz) has a lot of hash outside the
desired passband and overloaded the RTL.SDR I put an attenuator in line,
again, locals were clear but weak signals were lost in the mush. I think
part of that is the quadrature mode used above 30MHz though it does a
decent job on FMBC. Still looking into that but what I wound up doing is
tapping the 2nd IF between the second mixer and the filters through a 100pF
 ceramic cap.

Bingo! Adjusted the filter in SDR# and heard some sports talk right around
LSR on 1330 fading in and out with 3 or 4 other stations and no hash from
1320, 5KW directional 6 Miles away aimed right at me. I'm assuming the
dominant signal was WLOL Waterloo IA. but can't confirm, also heard what
sounded like religious programming and CW in the mix.

One of the problems I've had at this QTH is 2 of the local stations
directional arrays converging in my back yard and another local that I can
see the tower from the porch leaving big gaps in reception even with tuned
loops, preselecters etc. Nearby power lines make nulling practically
impossible on strong signals. I have all summer to tweak things and looking
forward to the fall DX season.

 Some observations about the RTL.SDR.

It's advertised as covering 100KHz to 1.7GHZ but using a signal generator
I've found it's pretty deaf below 1MHz or so. It took almost 30mV at 100KHz
to get a usable signal through the software. Was planning on using it at
455KHz but it's much more sensitive at 9MHz. I've only tested it to 432MHz.
using the remote starter key fob. Not really impressed but it does fine
with a 31 rod for local FM listening on the V/U input.

If it's going to be used by itself on MW/SW I'd strongly suggest a
preselector/preamp/attenuator. On SW it's the least sensitive (by orders of
magnitude) of any of my receivers and even overloaded on 5MHz WWV :P

It should work well with any radio that has an IF in the HF spectrum.
Tried it at 455KHz on a DX-160. It just doesn’t seem to want to work well
 below 1MHz.

It works on USB2 but the USB3 bus doesn't recognize it. Installation was
very easy if you remember to RTFM first. I use SDR# and have HDSDR
installed too. I prefer SDR# because the interface is more intuitive (for
me). Processor load and performance seem to be about equal with both
 programs. YMMV.

Using SDR# it runs fine on a Dual Core laptop if you keep the FFT at 65536
or lower and the old XP box with a 2.4GHz P4 at 1.024 MSPS. It's currently
running on a Win7 AMD Phenom II Quad @ 3.4GHz and using ~22% of processor
time. That's with the sample rate at 2.048MSPS and the FFT set at 131072,
spectrum, waterfall and IF displays enabled. A P4 or equivalent would be
the least I'd recommend so the old laptop is out of the question.

As a receiver it leaves a lot to be desired but used as an
IF/filter/detector I'm quite happy with it. For less than half the cost of
 a single _good_ crystal or

Not quite sure of the context of four numbers I hear before the ID, likely from
another station. They're 9943, and perhaps a phone number of some kind. But the
ID says WTDR Gadsden. That's in Alabama. Nice catch. It gets out fairly well
to the north under auroral conditions but I have not heard it since 2013 here.

[IRCA] KAAY 1090 is back; is KARN 920?

2015-04-05 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
** U S A. 1090, April 5 at 0614 UT, CW music in the WSW/ENE null of IBOC from
KRLD 1080, where I have been getting KVOP Plainview TX in the Panhandle, but
should be talk format. 0627 UT, oh oh, it`s gospel, with ``This Is My Father`s
World``, and 0630 ID and plug for programming at KAAY.com --- so Little Rock is
back on the air after copper theft! Also making 3 Hz SAH; maybe that`s with
KVOP. The KAAY signal is not strong at all, and would dearly like to know what
power and antenna pattern they are on, probably by STA. Nominally it`s tight
toward Manitoba and Yucatán and not much signal over here anyway.

Ooops, the ``powerful`` KAAY.com site is for sale; it`s really
http://www.1090kaay.com
But there is nothing obvious about its death and resurrexion. Full programming
schedule
http://www.1090kaay.com/common/more.php?m=10mode=scheduler=2
displays ``airtime available`` 24/7! Another schedule link covers M-F only. I
think I saw the same many months ago.

Latest informal letter in the correspondence folder at FCC says:
``ON MARCH 13, 2015, THE LICENSEE DETERMINED THAT SOMEONE CUT THE TRANSMISSION
LINE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL COPPER. THE LICENSEE PLANS TO REPLACE AND BURY
THE LINE UNDERGROUND. UNTIL THAT IS ACCOMPLISHED, THE STATION HAS SUSPENDED
OPERATIONS.``

Two years and five weeks *before* is the next one on file:

``Exhibit 3 Description: PARAMETERS OF OPERATION
RADIO LICENSE HOLDING CBC, LLC, RESUMED BROADCAST OPERATIONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH
SECTION 73.1560(D) OF THE RULES. BEFORE GOING SILENT THIS STATION WAS OPERATING
PURSUANT TO SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY. SEE BESTA-20121105ANP GRANTED
12/10/2012. STATION KAAY RETURNED TO THE AIR WITH DIFFERENT TECHNICAL
SPECIFICATIONS THAN THOSE PREVIOUSLY AUTHORIZED, THEREFORE, A NEW REQUEST FOR
SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY WAS FILED. SEE BSTA-20130208ABL GRANTED 2/15/2013.``

And that leads to this: ``Accordingly, the request for STA IS HEREBY GRANTED.
The December 10, 2012, STA is hereby modified to permit Station KAAY(AM) to
operate with an emergency nondirectional antenna and reduced power not to
exceed 5 kilowatts. It will be necessary to further reduce power or cease
operation if complaints of interference are received. This authority expires on
June 10, 2013`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Re: [IRCA] KAAY 1090 is back; is KARN 920?

2015-04-05 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
KAAY came back on sometime early yesterday afternoon and KARN was back on
sometime late afternoon/early evening yesterday, as reported by a DXer near
Little Rock. 1250 which had picked up KARN programming is not back to
simulcasting KIPR Power 92 Jamz.
