That is sad. I have a nice QSL from them from Oregon. Yes, they were even heard when Bakersfield was on during DX Tests. I wonder if someone else will apply for 1560? A DX test on October 18, 1993 brought in a report from Paul Ormandy in Oamaru, New Zealand. Len was quite pleased and included a copy of Paul's report as part of the verie package. There's a YouTube posting of a 1980 recording of Len doing the sign-off; toward the end you can hear traces of the sign-off of long-gone WTRQ in Warsaw, North Carolina. WAGL was a daytimer and the FCC will not license anything under 250 watts again.. i doubt anyone will apply for 1560 there, as getting the minimum 250 watts would probably take several towers, if you could do it at all. [IRCA] steel wire fence in Venice, CA (near Los Angeles)
I didn't have my radio with me at the time, but there is a steel wire fence on a bike path in Venice CA which is around 1000 feet. Could this work as a pre-made beverage? It also works for utility pole ground wires, although in those cases you also have the noise from the powerlines to deal with. I've found even that can vary, too. I heard both of their DX tests here in Southern CA on GE Superadio 2. I believe that is my only South Carolina. Sad to hear about both the passing of the owner as well as the loss of this legendary station.
