KVON in Wine country. I think my favorite Napa Valley wine is Trinchero Cabernet (no endorsement implied, hi). They (KVON) also ran a nice DX test a few years back. [IRCA] 540 tonight
--- Begin Message --- Well, I was "playing around" with my SDR-IQ tonight and I heard two stations on 540. N/S was WQIH850 in Burien, with a promo about the Wild Strawberry Festival 6/20-21, which I logged back in 2010. E/W was a loop with NO ID stating that they were an Emergency broadcast station authorized by the FCC to "this" community and that they were on 24 hours a day. No clue who this might be, but the signal was about as strong as the Burien station that looped N/S. No sign of CBK as it was probably too early for them. Both these heard between 1850 and 2050 on 5/15 and were quite separate from each other with the loop. The band was pretty quiet (not quite sunset here)... and I discovered that I have an intermittent connection in my Wellbrook loop coax connection that comes and goes depending on how you "wiggle" the coax connector (so I have to go back and forth between the antenna and PC while adjusting the loop - not fun at all, hi). Note that the coax leads into a potted circuit, so just how am I supposed to fix this (it's gotta be a simple fix 'cause it works just fine if I maneuver it right)!!! But a quick glance at the business associated with the sign made me realize that I was looking at W-B-E-Y, 1370 AM. I turned around and went back for a closer look. A quick turn of the dial told me that the station was off the air...and I couldn't recall if it was in my log book at home. I took a few pictures using my cell phone camera, as we had a look around. In back of the building was a large fiberglass C-Band satellite dish, that I imagined had once received programming from some other source. But no evidence of an STL link. Instead, I found a tall telephone pole with what looked like the remains of a 40 meter dipole mounted near the top. 50 ohm coax ran from inside the building to the top of the pole. Could someone had loaded up this for use as the stations antenna? The large faded letters on the front of the building were almost like the voice of a ghost. It was sad, and nostalgic---all at the same time. Railroad fans use the term "fallen flags" to refer to railroads that no longer exist. Think of companies like Conrail, or Southern. Their boxcars can still be seen on trains today, echoes from railroads past. I couldn't help but thinking of the term "Fallen Flag" when it came to this station. Some lousy weather the past few days kept me from my Outside Chores and Yardwork, so I used the time to do some Dxing via the recordings!! 1 NEW AM Station logged and 1 CALL CHANGE as well. Also included here are some RELOGS of stations not heard in quite some time. Usually by May I have packed up the AM BCB and moved on to FM/TV DX….but with the SDR recordings still netting me some New Stations it gives me some incentive to continue DXing AM!! I am not used to hearing a bunch of New Stations on AM BCB during the month of May, but this is my 6th New Station heard during May, and we are less than half way through the month!! Great Fun, and I can hardly wait for the FM DX to Start so I can carry right on with the ELAD Recordings ….only for FM BCB!! I remember reading someplace many years ago that if you can DX during the Summer Off Season on the AM BCB, you can log a lot of Closer in stuff that is not heard during the Winter when the Skip seems to lengthen out somewhat. That may very well be correct as I have logged a lot of New Stations that are Lowered Powered and only a state or two away from me…..that have not been heard in my 40 Years of Dxing!!
