[IRCA] Thursday evening - Orleans, MA
--- Begin Message --- For the first time in two years I did some local DXpeditioning with the Perseus receiver and car roof loop set-up ( http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/loop/car_roof_loop.htm ). This was a good "shake-down cruise" opportunity for the various antenna system components. I had a few redundant assemblies on hand in case of something going belly-up. One thing I noticed was that noise introduced by the laptop could range from negligible to bad depending on how I routed the feedlines. I was at the site ( http://chowdanet.com/markc/pictures/orleans_dxsite1.gif ) from 8:30-10 p.m. EDT (0030-0200 UTC). Knowing that conditions were going to be auroral, I figured that it made sense to visit this location which has a good track record for Brazilian and African reception. The top Brazilian was R. Globo on 1220. It dominated the channel pretty much anytime I checked. 1100 and 1280 popped in at times. Stations occasionally tangling with 1010 WINS and 1130 WBBR were likely also Brazil. Signals on frequencies below 800 kHz were relatively weak. Often-big-gun 760 Fortaleza, Brazil may have been there but laptop noise and the limitations of the 2m by 2m broadband loop posed challenges to clean audio recovery. A bigger antenna definitely would have nailed more DX in this kind of an opening, but how much can really be mounted on top of a car? The TA's that were coming in reflected southerly-route reception. Best ones were 549 Algeria, 621 Canaries, 783 Mauritania, and 1008 Canaries. I don't think the captures are going to turn up anything astounding. Based on yesterday's at-home listening and tonight's session in Orleans, I think that the aurora of late March had more DX "beef" to it than the current one. Phone 800-522-1235, immediately cut to Univisión América ID in Spanish and PSAs in Spanish for US Army from Ad Council, et al. Good steady signal, loops SSE/NNW, so obviously 50/5 kW U4 KFLC Fort Worth TX. I didn`t realize UA axually had shows in English, which resumes at 0141 UT; callers from various states refer to host as Fernando but he has no accent and opines that racists naturally favor Republican candidates; calls out Ted Cruz. At 0144 UT signal suddenly drops, but still audible sufficiently; 0145 UT drops off completely, ceding 1270 to Spanish music no doubt from KTUZ Tulsa/Claremore OK. Not so much as an adiós. But I can still hear KFLC at peaks by nulling KTUZ at quite a different angle. 0145 UT is indeed the official sunset for June and July, when KFLC decimates its power and adds two towers for a total of six to make the rather tight night pattern, east-west; while day pattern is broader with major lobe east, minor west (but plenty to the NNW, evidently). Community of license is Benbrook, which is on the southwest edge of Fort Worth at the junxion of I-20 and Loop 820; why? Facility 34298 I distinctly remember as originally KFJZ, but since at least 1986 it`s been other-called, starting with KESS, and since 2004y it`s been KFLC (but owned by Kess-AM License Corp.). KFJZ calls now apply to the Vietnamese [Radio-locator thinx it`s S Asian] on 870, different licensee. KFJZ was also an early independent TV station, channel 11. I used to see a ghostly Dr Gene Scott on it after midnite (long before he became a ghost). Radio-locator shows the 1270 transmitter site is really east of downtown FW, and the address is in Dallas. Truly a Metroplex station! As for this show in English, the UAR website http://univisionamerica.univision.com/programacion/ shows at 18-22 UT weekdays: FERNANDO ESPUELAS SHOW: ``El presentador Fernando Espuelas, exitosa celebridad de vanguardia en medios de difusión, hace que los radioescuchas participen en este programa de dos horas con debates que hacen reflexionar y perspectivas culturales sobre asuntos pertinentes y sucesos de la actualidad, inspirando a sus oyentes a mejorar activamente su aporte a la sociedad`` So is this a playback, or does he have a separate show really in Spanish? Blurb says it`s two hours, but no next show listed until 4 hours later, `Locura Deportiva` starting at 22 UT! And nothing after that. Quite incomplete (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1280, June 18 at 1331 UT, no signal from KSOK Arkansas City KS, semi-local C&W station. Maybe I`ll finally hear Poteau OK? Not today. Still off at 1750 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1280, June 19 around 1830-1930 UT chex, KSOK Ark City KS remains off the air. BTW, I notice that some log editors don`t like to publish non-logs, but I think this info is just as significant if not more so than when a station *is* on and routinely loggable. Of course nothing on their website http://www.ksokradio.com/pages/12241070.php? about an outage, where 1280 (since 1947y) appears to be a mere appendage to their FM 95.9, tho separately programmed. I hunt thru their Facebook https://www.facebook.com/KSOKRadio and find this after mostly commercial and event promotion: ``KSOK Radio Yesterday at 7:48am · [1248 UT June 18] Folks, we are working to get 1280AM back up and running! We'll Keep you posted! Like · Comment Booker T. Jennings III, Jenny Clark and Samantha McDonald like this`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1280, KSOK Arkansas City KS, is still off the air, afternoon of June 20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1280, June 25 at 1248 UT, KSOK, Ark City KS is back on the air, ad for an arborist in its Cowley County, Davis Tree Service, 316 area code. [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 6-25
Hello All, Warm and clear weather along with auroral conditions prompted a sudden decision to make an overnight departure from the DXing wasteland of Puyallup-- resulting in an early start to my own portion of the Rockwork 4 DXpedition. Although Kiwi propagation was slightly off from the freakish levels that Chuck and I enjoyed last July, the weather and auroral conditions cooperated fairly well to provide an interesting session, with several S9 signals pounding in from the South Pacific. The greatest collection of ferrite this side of the Ukraine rolled down I-5 at the bizarre hour of 0100 local time, as five mega-FSL's (17", 15", two 12" MW and one 12" LW) were crammed into the Toyota Corolla during the solo trip. After arriving at the plunging ocean cliff at 0320 local time the 17" and 15" FSL's were set up on their PVC stands and began chasing the South Pacific signals. Murphy's Law did manage to get in a final shot during the rushed departure as the power supply for the DSP599ZX was mistakenly left behind in Puyallup, making it impossible for me to filter out the annoying 1 kHz and 2 kHz heterodynes on MP3's that I post immediately (beware of this when listening to MP3's of 531 and 738!). Maybe someone could volunteer to filter these out for me, so that I can post them without being responsible for hearing loss?? Anyway the propagation was decent, and both Australia and New Zealand were well represented. Some of the best signals were on 531 and 738, though, and I don't really feel like posting the recordings until someone can filter out the heterodynes and send them back to me. Chuck Hutton plans to join me tomorrow morning, and Tom Rothlisberger will join the "Cliffhanger DX" crew on Saturday morning. Wild and wacky DX is back!! 531 PI Fighting it out with an UnID Australian (2PM?) at near S9 level for much of the session; unlike last July, the Aussie was kicking butt 558 Brief peak of Polynesian music around 1243 (presumed Fiji), but signal was paranoid of MP3 recorder 567 RNZ Wellington, NZ S9+ interview at 1236; best Kiwi signal of the session https://app.box.com/s/tndc6maw6m1q2ux2oupurj2wthrr94ad 5+1 pips and RNZ identification at good level at 1300 https://app.box.com/s/xdusti02vntri0ja14rbu9co12sy4mtc 576 2RN Sydney, Australia Male interview at good level at 1236 https://app.box.com/s/i0p6cfz50wc8btkk7hvb4w70syjhjkvp 585 UnID-Australian The mystery of the morning. Nice! Stuff didn't seem to be propagating well into the Midwest last night so I quit at 0400. I will go listen to 1030 across 0400 and see if any pips are coming thru weakly.
