Re: [IRCA] 15 September TP/DU Victoria B.C. Canada

2015-09-16 Thread Andrew Ikin
The vactrol control voltage on the Wellbrook K9AY was fed via the coax.
feeder. Two separate wires were used to switch the loops and beam reversal
relays.

The rare Wellbrook K9AY Phased array used a fixed 360 Ohm termination
resistor. The pattern tweaking was done by varying the Phase/Amplitude.

Colin & Craig -
Principles don't need to be similar - a Vactrol can terminate a Beverage,
DKAZ flag, loop, delta, etc.

Are you really using a flag or is it a corner fed loop?
And yes, the K9AY system uses a termination box with a Vactrol. The
Wellbrook version had several flavors, but the one I remember also used a
Vactrol but unlike most other schemes, DC was fed to the Vactrol via
separate wires rather than using the coax to carry DC. Can you be specific
about the version you have?

Entirely possible - but I am not an authority on the K9AY --
Principles are similar I think -

I am going to post an article on the subject and open up a discussion area
on the DXer.ca website.

Also looking for a sense if there would be a demand for separate hand-made
VACTROL units
that can be used be the deliciously simple FLAG antenna system/concept.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the antennas are in the planning stages. I was
planning on putting one up either this weekend, or next. I haven't fully
decided between a corner fed loop vs a flag. I'm also wondering if a
bidirectional loop, or flag would work with two wires fed at opposite ends.

Thanks for considering my questions.

Best Asian reception in several days. Nothing too astonishing at

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-16

2015-09-16 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Dennis for his detailed TP report (and to Colin and Walt for their
sleep reports). Some promising Asian signals in the predawn darkness were left
floundering without much of a sunrise enhancement boost this morning. Despite
this, what seemed destined to be another fizzler session was rescued somewhat
by a late surge from the middle band Koreans on 972, 1053 and 1134-- all of
which reached fair to good levels briefly.

In total darkness around 1250 it seemed like a good session was in the works,
with the NHK big guns on 594, 693, 747 and 828 already hitting fair to good
levels, and 1566-HLAZ at very good strength in and out. Unfortunately nothing
much happened with these signals for the rest of the session, as increasing
daylight seemed to sap the strength of all except for 594-JOAK. From 1315-1330
mediocrity reigned, until around 1330 the previously silent Koreans on 972 and
1053 began to come out of the noise. 972-HLCA reached a brief good level in the
"Freedom 970" splatter around 1335 while the 1053-Jammer did the same a few
minutes later. 1134-KBS was riding the same modest propagation boost, and
managed to clear the Vancouver splatter for a few minutes around 1340 with
Korean pop music (apparently // 972). 594-JOAK was in and out of the noise all
session long, but never came up to its predawn level. A collection of high band
big guns on 1503, 1575 and 1593 also managed threshold audio for brief moments
late on around 1335 but never amounted to much. So, Colin and Walt, you
probably made the correct decision this morning.

level at 1335

[IRCA] Radios for sale

2015-09-16 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
FOR SALE: I have several shortwave radios for sale.

Grundig S450DLX: $30 (heavier radio)

Sangean ATS803A $50 (has a little sand on it from a beach, but it works!)

Sangean ATS909 $45 (current whip on it is broken, but I have a replacement
which I'll throw in. The audio is a little wonky, but not sure why))

Radio Shack AM FM Shortwave Radio #2000629 $40

Radio Shack DX390 $50 (heavier radio)

Grundig G5 $50 (reportedly, the external antenna jack for this works on FM,
SW AND AM!)

CC Pocket SW radio $20

Eton E10 $40

None of the radios have wallwarts, I operate them on batteries anyways to
reduce potential interference/noise. They are all in at least GOOD
condition, some look a little rough but all function.

If someone buys all of these radios , I'll sell it all for $300 plus
shipping and throw in a never used par of earbuds and a Sangean reel/wind
up antenna.

If someone does NOT buy the radio and just wants ont individually, I am
pretty firm on the prices. (Buying them individually would cost $325.. I
originally paid probably close to $500 all told for all of these radios!)

(I figure shipping will be about $75 as the Grundig S450DLX and Sangean
ATS803A are heavy radios)

I accept paypal only. PLEASE understand because of my crazy work schedule
and early/long hours, it'll be a few days, a week before I get stuff
shipped out (I still owe some stuff to a few people and will be taking care
of that soon... )

These radios work, they are just surplus to my needs and I want to use the
money to put it towards an antenna and communications receiver.

Email me privately if you are interested.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 16 September 2015

2015-09-16 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Today was slightly better than yesterday. The upper end of the dial
was still pretty dead, but the lower end had a bit more life. Tahiti
had a bit more consistent audio than yesterday, and I also had weak
audio on 702 (man talking at 1249) and Australia on 774 (man talking at
1238, and noted ABC fanfare at 1300).

[IRCA] TP 16 Sep Victoria version

2015-09-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Some solid signals from the old guard Asians this morning, from long
before sunrise. But, not much in the way of second tier stations,
and some Aussies also crept in as well.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

972 HLCA man and woman in Korean followed by oriental singing
1566 HLAZ. woman in Japanese 1333UT; several peaks during the program

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

612 4QR. Had IDd 1300UT with ABC fanfare, but fairly weak. Reached
this level at 1337UT with woman and man talking in DU English

747 JOIB man in Japanese //774 1335UT
774 JOUB man in Japanese at 1159UT, pips on hour, and into English
lessons. Heard at this level a number of times over following couple of hours
828 JOBB 1159UT man in Japanese //774, pips on hour. Both this and
774 had 6 pips weakly on hour as well, so likely 3LO and 3GI?

1053 Korean jammer 1337UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

702 2BL likely. woman and man in DU English 1246UT, no parallel available
1287 JOHR man in Japanese 1326UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 weak 6 pips at 1300UT, 4KZ?
576 2RN instrumental music //621 1306UT
594 man talking, Japanese inflection 1336UT
621 3RN soft music 1341UT //576
738 pop music 1304UT likely Tahiti; heard better the evenings before and after
792 4RN soft music //621 1337UT
891 woman talking 1304UT, too faint for language guess
1134 man talking 1335UT, seemed more Korean to me, but not //972

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

864 873 1017 1098 1116 1143 1242 1323 1386 1422

best wishes,

Nick
