[IRCA] 2080 Campaign

2015-09-21 Thread info

www.radioheritage.net
September 22 2015

Dear RHF Friend

Yes, we're still keeping the radio memories safe, and here's a simple
way everyone including you can keep it that way!

2080 Campaign Launched
__

Now we're almost 6 months into a new financial year, we have to do
something about the dreaded 20/80 ratio...basically we have 80% of the
funds needed until September 30 but we must bridge the missing 20% gap
otherwise we'll record another loss at the end of the year!

Popularity and Use are UP!

Compared to this exact time a year ago visitor sessions are up 3.4%,
users are up 2.1%, pageviews are up 1.7% and new users are slightly down
at 81% while 19% are returning to enjoy us again.

China now Visitor Source #5

People come visit us from over 100 countries and the top 5 are now New
Zealand, Australia, USA, UK and China replacing India from a year ago.

Donations this time last year covered all our costs but this year we're
running almost 20% less. Please help us find the $A2,322 we still need
by September 30 and so we can continue bringing you more stories and
free services.

93 Regular Donations of $25

Just 93 people of the thousands who visit here each month donating $25
each will bridge the gap. Will you please be one of those 93? We'll add
you to the Supporter Roll of Honor and thousands of people will thank
you for keeping the project on track!

2104 2015
$11732 September 30 target $11732
$12054 Received $ 9410
102% Funded 80%

The 2080 Campaign is now underway and your donation via our Paypal
donate button will be acknowledged with thanks. All funds are used to
meet our regular monthly overhead costs such as storage, utiliities and
office service expenses. These are fixed for 5 years.

Our volunteers maintain the website, research and prepare the features
and radio guides and continue their work on the new website and the
Collective Access database projects for release later this year/early
2016. After more than 10 years we're still small and personal enough
that each individual supporter is known by name!

You can make sure we continue keeping the radio memories safe.thank
you in advance for your donation to bridge the 2080 gap!

Re: [IRCA] SDR Recordings

2015-09-21 Thread Brian Rachford
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a magic bullet for this. I
actually record more than most, :58:00 to :06:40 just in case a station is
quite late or the possibility of catching something after network news.
Also, for XE stations that give a full ident after playing a long version
of the Mexican national anthem at a particular TOH. But, I usually don't
have to go beyond the TOH to see if there is something interesting. If I
get a new station or a better quality ident in the raw file, I stop and
"record" to an audio file and edit/filter it in Audacity. So, if I have a
good TOH, it can take an hour or more to go through it. If not, it can be
much less as I rapidly flick through the usual warhorses. Listening to
every single second of every single channel in a TOH recording is not even
in the ballpark of what one actually needs to do in a routine situation.

My solution (so far) is to not record all the time, as much as I might want
to. Right now, most of my TOH recordings are a byproduct of recording
several hours up to sunrise to monitor trans-Pacific reception. I can't
leave out any of my primary antennas 24/7 due to blocking the driveway or
fragility of the antenna. So, if I don't feel like setting up or think I
will be rushed in the morning in trying to take it down, I don't record.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] SDR Recordings

2015-09-21 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Around sunset and then again around 11 p.m. local, I look at some key channels
with my two different antennas for any better-than-usual or (at least) unusual
/ anomalous propagation. If things aren't that interesting, I won't fire off a
capture unless it has been several weeks since the last one.

Typically I'll only have 3 or 4 top-of-hour runs saved over the course of the
week.

On the other hand, if DXpeditioning, I'll do runs every half hour for maybe 4
or 5 grabs during a usual in-car session at the seashore starting just before
sunset. At home, if I'm working a stupendous auroral opening (as we did in
late March) or therre's serious audio from second and third tier Transatlantic
stations (beyond routine blasters), I will run many captures in a single night.

I have seldom explored recording after midnight local. The few times I've
listened later, the productivity has not been worth it.

Hello,

I am just curious how other SDR users approach their overnight
recordings from a home location.

My present approach is I record the AM band
2 minutes before the hour and 2 minutes past the hour from 10pm to 5am. I am
finding its a long process to get through the recordings, I am already 4 months
behind in my recordings but I am not complaining. My question is, "What approach
are others following that allows them to get through their recordings in a
timely manner if there is such a thing". I know everyone will approach this
differently as to their own preferences, just looking for options that I can
adopt myself. I know on DX trips, you try to record as much as possible as to
not miss that gem of a catch. Do you have target frequencies you look
at...etc

Your thoughts please are
welcomed.

[IRCA] SDR Recordings

2015-09-21 Thread jniven
Hello,

I am just curious how other SDR users approach their overnight recordings from
a home location.

My present approach is I record the AM band 2 minutes before the hour and 2
minutes past the hour from 10pm to 5am. I am finding its a long process to get
through the recordings, I am already 4 months behind in my recordings but I am
not complaining. My question is, "What approach are others following that
allows them to get through their recordings in a timely manner if there is such
a thing". I know everyone will approach this differently as to their own
preferences, just looking for options that I can adopt myself. I know on DX
trips, you try to record as much as possible as to not miss that gem of a
catch. Do you have target frequencies you look at...etc

Your thoughts please are welcomed.

Thanks

Re: [IRCA] SDR Recordings

2015-09-21 Thread Kraig

Stop and think what you're getting yourself into.

118 frequencies (530, 540, 550... 1700 kHz) * 10 minutes (5 minutes before the
hour and 5 minutes after the hour) * 24 = 28,320 minutes.
28320 / 60 (minutes in 1 hour) = 472 hours needed to listen to 1 day of TOH
recordings.

How about only 1 TOH recording?
  118 frequencies * 10 minutes = 1,180 minutes.
  1180 / 60 = 19.67 hours needed to listen.

How about only record 2 minutes before the TOH and 2 minutes after.
  118 frequencies * 4 minutes * 24 = 11,328 minutes.
  11328 / 60 = 188.8 hours

How about only 1 TOH 4 minute recording?
  118 frequencies * 4 minutes = 472 minutes
  472 / 60 = 7.867 hours needed to listen.

Hope you have plenty of time available.

73,

Kraig, KG4LAC

[IRCA] Victoria B.C. TP/DU Sept 21 - 2015 Who put the bop in the bop shu bop?

2015-09-21 Thread R. Colin Newell
Todays session was more lively and unpredictable than a Texas Holdem
competition in Vegas
with more wide ranging choices than the National Republican convention.

I started early after getting roused by my wife at 1200 UTC about a digital
alarm going off
somewhere in our house - turned out to be a low battery alarm on a wireless
phone.
After a 15 minute roller coaster of here now, gone in a moment DU selection
(lead on a visual
wild goose chase with Nick's online Fish Barrel...) I gave up and decided
to pack it in for a
minimum of one hour. My observation at 1204 UTC was: There is great promise
here
but it would be at least an hour away from blooming. Off to bed!

I returned to the dial by 1314 UTC and the dial was in the full swing, up
and down
of an old wooden roller coaster.

Most noted this morning were ABC Network on 612 and 774 clearly parallel to
the online live stream.
774 occasionally traded off with Japan but there was little evidence on an
Asian opening apart from
bursts of 1st and 2nd tier activity.

By 1318 UTC Korea on 1566 was holding down the channel firmly with quick
fades. 1575 would
often reveal snippets of VOA Thailand.

A surprise was CBC Relay (40W) in Ucluelet, British Columbia relaying CBC 1
90.5 in Victoria -
This flea power has been heard in Australia - but it is always a treat in
Victoria. https://youtu.be/KwkhL8dL8dU

Summary - Good audio at times: 567, 576, 594 (JJ), 603 (KK), 612 (EE), 702,
738, 747, 774, 792, 828, 891, 954 (JJ), 1386, 1566, 1575
Promising signals threatening audio but not delivering - 531, 558, 639,
675, 756, 764, 801, 1116, 1242, 1593

Every couple of minutes (according to the NHP Fish Barrel it was a shuffle
of the deck and a completely different scenario.

Bonus YouTube track - https://youtu.be/aclIn5ib1ps Korea on 1566 Khz on the
Kenwood R2000 + Wellbrook ALA100M Antenna

At the home QTH I usually go with 2 min before TOH and 2 after for the band
unless a compelling reason to change like needing a bottom of the hour for a
particular frequency. Of course DXpedition recording is a different animal;
more is always better.

I also have been monitoring for a couple days. I had a time trying to figure
out their website as they didn’t spell "DESI". Of course their listeners
know what it means so I guess no need to spell it. It means those of Indian,
Pakistani, etc descent who live abroad. I did hear one KKDZ ID so I guess
they are keeping the calls for now.

I don't know what Desi means, but I've heard it used on other radio stations

I hope that you can receive some Asians soon, Nigel (as you usually do). By
contrast, the total lack of DU propagation here has continued for 8 years.

My own personal solution is to schedule a couple of all-out DXpeditions to wild
ocean cliff sites each summer, during which multiple exotic DU's (including a
few which don't seem to show up anywhere else) can be received. This fanatical
behavior has even attracted noted Perseus-SDR DXers.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-21

2015-09-21 Thread d1028gary

Asian signals made a very halfhearted recovery this morning after yesterday's
total swoon, with several Japanese and Korean regulars managing ghostly audio
during peak sunrise enhancement, 594, 603 (HLSA), 693, 774, 1134 (apparent
JOQR) and 1566 all had a few seconds of threshold audio above the noise level
from 1335-1350, but none of them could sustain audio for more than a minute at
a time. The session was a real clunker, but after yesterday maybe it's best to
be thankful for a somewhat positive trend.

Re: [IRCA] any suggestions: noise cancelling headphones

2015-09-21 Thread Eric Floden
hi there

a mix of AM/SW listening, and in-flight viewing and MP3íng

we are off shortly to the Golden Lake ON cottage where I like to listen to
Yankees / RedSox etc. ball games on radio and being able to do so with
noise minimized is wonderful . . .

in other news, do you want an aluminum CBC coffee flask? It has the
markings for Windsor on it (when they were on 1550)

thanks
