I didn't think about taping until 07:12 UTC, so I'll listen to my mp3
especially around 07:20 to see if I heard anything. Here, it was a battle
between Saskatoon (mostly) and occasionally CO. I didn't notice any echo.

Re: [IRCA] not WBOB-600

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Martin
I have a lot of 70s & 80s cassettes that still play okay. At my age, I figure
most of my tapes will last the rest of my life. I tried out a 1977 Beta tape a
few months ago and it played fine, with the usual dropouts with the old heads.
I record everything TV on DVD now. But there is a question on how long the
burns will last too.

Congrats, Patrick, you definitely had them. Voice ID, all of 3 seconds, noted
here at 0053:42 EST. Then into whoop tones and Morse Code.

BTW, Total Recorder is great. Once you use it, you will never use cassettes
again.

I found the sweep tones at 0202 EST and a bit later some tones and also phone
off the hook sounds. I still need to go back and re-run the cassette tape to
see if any code or voice IDs came through the jumble. My beverage is not as
directional as I would like at the bottom of the band. Above 1200 it is very
directional.

[IRCA] WBOB-600 - Patrick Martin

2016-01-10 Thread Marc DeLorenzo via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

Re: [IRCA] WBOB-600 - Patrick Martin

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks Marc. I am trying to put together a report to e mail. The sweep tones
came in fairly well and I heard some 1000 cycle tones as well as the phone off
the hook sounds. I would love to get at least 1 CW ID. I will check out the
cassette tonight. I am a bit concerned about recording to the HDD as a
permanent record, as there are hiccups in software. On an analog cassette, the
audio will be there until I erase it.

Hey - I still have a functioning Walkman from 1985 --
A couple of Sony MD's
A Commercial grade JVC Dual direct drive Cassette unit.
A Tascam pro Reel-reel 7 and 15 IPS mastering deck
A 1972 era Sony 1 7/8, 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS Reel-Reel

and boxes of cassettes from the mid 70's to mid-80's that really need to be
digitally re-mastered before they crumble.

[IRCA] TP 9 Jan Victoria version

2016-01-10 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Pretty dead until after 1500UT, and a pre-sunrise peak around 1530UT
on the upper band

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

no

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1575 VoA woman in SE Asian language 1528UT, "this program has come to
you from the Voice of America" by man at 1529UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1566 HLAZ first heard 1508UT, and maintained a low level of audio,
with final peak 1527-31UT with woman and man in Chinese, and hymns

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

972 female vocal music 1541UT
1593 man talking 1525UT, Chinese?

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

the above passing through

best wishes,

Nick

I was doing chores at 0700UT, but left the recorder running. There
are weak "whoops" under KCOL at 0702UT (check again Walt and
Colin). A fine tooth comb will be necessary, but I think I need
to try digging out some CW.Time is at a premium at present, may
need to wait a day or two...

What frequency was the CW tones?

1610 CHHA seems off the air right now, or at least no sign of them here in
Michigan, which is unusual. Instead I just heard the Mackinac Bridge
Authority TIS fade in on 1610 using the North D-KAZ at a distance of around
200 miles. New here!

Nick - also thought that I heard a couple of instances of 'whoops / sweeps'
and one of tones, at 0708 and 0720Z if I recall, but just too light to be
certain. I was able to nicely null barn-burner CJWW but still couldn't seem
to get past the other two C-t-C stations. Prop was very good to that
direction on 630m last night so it's not that conditions were terrible.

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Martin
I finally got back to the cassette tape and after running the cassette through
some filtering, at 0200 EST, 2300 PST, I heard Morse Code which sounded like
WBOB, but the QRM was pretty rough, at 0202 EST 2302 PST, there was sweep tones
that I had caught earlier. Now all I have to do is try to put the first 3
minutes into an audio file and e mail it off. I am very pleased indeed!!! That
Eastern Beverage did it again!

[IRCA] WBOB DX Test - Upper LaHaveNova Scotia

2016-01-10 Thread Michael Yule
Fair here in Nova Scotia at 05:59:30 UTC - as mentioned by others sweep
tones, stairs, Price is Right jingle. Progreso had been dominating up to the
time the test started.

Rcdg starts at 05:59:30.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gdbdofuhcwgd5ww/Radio%20-%20WBOB%20600%20kHz%2010%
20Jan%202016%20055930%20UTC.mp3?dl=0

At 0658-0702 UTC Rebelde cuckoo tones and commentary @ TOH, that wiped out
very strong 'America the beautiful' up to 06:58:50. Sweep tones audible at
07:01:45 under Rebelde. Can't confirm where 'AtB' originated, no ID heard.

Rcdg starts at 06:58:30.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/yfgrpy43q1ebbvs/Radio%20-%20WBOB%20600%20kHz%2010%
20Jan%202016%20065830%20UTC.mp3?dl=0

At 0758-0802 UTC only Libertad (Barranquila) on frequency.

Can anyone confirm what power was being used? Is it the regular nighttime of
1.8? I notice a construction permit for 9.7 nighttime, and am wondering if
this was what was being tested. Also does anyone know if there is a
possibility of QSL'ing this transmission?

Thanks very much!

For a while, I had a slight echo on the Coast to Coast audio, which
would have been a mix of KCOL and KOGO.

I just heard a nice clear KCOL ID a couple of minutes ago (maybe around
0638 UT). It's dominant here in Seattle, with a trace of something in the
background. That's on the 150 degree lobe of the K9AY.

I've mostly been doing unattended recording so far, so there might be
more there when I play back the file. Judging from the reports, I
shouldn't get my hopes up for WBOB.

I did catch the sweeps, but that was it. I will check the cassette out later,
in case I missed something. I wasn't listening all of the time, but the
cassette was running. At 0259.50 I caught the KCOL 600 ID, mixing with KGEZ ( A
regular) as well as SK.

[IRCA] Full report, WBOB DX test reception (Arizona)

2016-01-10 Thread Brian Rachford
I had been having problems with my 7'x24' Superloop antenna and suspected
the impedance matching transformer for the feedline, but had been too busy
to take care of that. Finally, with the WBOB DX test upcoming, I built a
new transformer and while I was at it, built a decade box resistor for the
termination. As usual, I was using my RTL-SDR/upconverter/pre-amp combo
and gqrx software on a MacBook Pro, and the antenna was pointed 90 degrees
as Jacksonville is almost exactly due East via Great Circle.

The test apparently started at 10pm MST (0500UT), and while I had hints of
Morse code during the second hour (which I might be able to recover from
the SDR recording), I was worried I was going to get shut out. KCOL was
much stronger than usual and on top most of the time, with KOGO and
presumed KROD frequently in the mix. However, CW came through quite
clearly around 12:05am MST, followed by several frequency sweeps. I had
made a "cheat sheet" so I could recognize the call letters in real time.
Upon replay, I was able to decode the entire message. Nothing received
during the rest of the test.

600 WBOB, Jacksonville FL, weak at 12:05am (0705UT), 35kW(?), CW call (new;
driveway loop), 1809 miles

This was a new state and my 3rd longest overland reception. Thanks to
Jerry Smith for the test.

is Right" theme, klaxon siren and very slow CW heard here in Manassas, VA.

[IRCA] WBOB 600 FL Test L in Alabama

2016-01-10 Thread Les Rayburn
WBOB, Jacksonville, FL 600 KHz DX Test was easy copy here on car radio. Content
consisting of log sweep tones, “off hook” telephone sounder, slow speed (5WPM)
CW ID’s, computer-generated female voice ID’s “This is a Test. WBOB
Jacksonville, Florida”, game show music “Price is Right”, “America the
Beautiful”, faster (8-10 WPM) CW ID’s, etc.

Great test and I’m sure it was well heard. Thanks to everyone involved in
arranging this. Super to hear a DX test so early in 2016! Hope there are many
more to come.

Heard here in Alabaster, AL (near Birmingham)

[IRCA] WBOB Test

2016-01-10 Thread Russ Edmunds
I had doubts on hearing this as the azimuth takes me quite close to IBOC
local WIP-610, however upon checking the recordings, I heard the code
starting 0008 followed by sweeps coming through Rebelde. Also had SRN
religion, which based on other reports was probably also WBOB. Nice 5 wpm
code ID's 0013 then phone off hook sound after.

[IRCA] WBOB Test

2016-01-10 Thread Ira Elbert New III
I listened from about 1:10 to 1:15 in the morning here and heard the test loud
and clear. I heard Morse Code, Sweep Tones, a Busy Signal, and The Price is
Right theme song.

There was a little fading towards 1:15, but otherwise, it was almost like
listening to a local station at night.

I used my SANGEAN ATS 909 to catch this one.

Re: [IRCA] WBOB 600 DX TEST

2016-01-10 Thread Larry R Fravel
Listened from 0002 to 0018 and heard the test come through very well.
Started out at 0001 with SRN news , then faded out and had some SS pretty
loud. About 0008 picked up sweep tones of various types, off hook tones,
more tones, Morse ID then back into more tones. Every once in a while a
short 3 or 4 second blurb from a male announcer talking about religion would
come through. More CW at 0017 into sweeps.

Used my IC-7410, MFJ-1024 active antenna at about 15 feet and 50 feet from
house. My location is in valley at 900 feet surrounded by hills at 1300 to
1500 feet, especially to the south.

[IRCA] WBOB Test

2016-01-10 Thread Stan Horzepa
I had my doubts about hearing WBOB here in Central Connecticut, but I
stayed up anyway and was rewarded with a new log entry.

I began hearing WBOB at 0516 UTC and monitored 600 kHz until 0605 UTC.
During that time I heard voice and Morse Code station ID's, as well as,
music (the "Price is Right" theme song), a variety of tone sweeps and
telephone busy signals. WBOB was competing with local WICC and an
unidentified Spanish station, but I managed to hear "something" from
WBOB most of the 49 minutes I monitored 600 kHz. I recorded about ten
minutes of the test with my iPad.

I used an Elecraft KX3 with an 80-meter inverted Vee dipole most of the
time, but the signal was so good that I tried listening with my C.Crane
Skywave receiver using its stock internal antenna and heard a voice ID
loud and clear.

Great Fun!

[IRCA] WBOB Question

2016-01-10 Thread Russ Edmunds
During the course of the test there were times when WBOB clearly broke from
its SRN programming to run test material, however other times when they
appeared to run the tones, sweeps, etc. along with/through the SRN talk.

Did others observe this ? Or was there someone else in there running SRN
programming ? None of the listed SRN stations on 600 would appear likely,
so I'm inclined to believe that they did mix it up in this way

[IRCA] WBOB DX test to Oklahoma

2016-01-10 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
** U S A. 600, Jan 10 at 0545 UT on the R75 with E/W longwire, first check for
the WBOB Jacksonville FL DX test which started at 0500 UT. Really too much WMT
on this antenna, so switch to DX-398 nulling WMT IA as much as possible, i.e.
aiming SE instead of ESE, which leaves a mix of Cuba and who knows what. Soon I
hear Morse code spelling out JACKSONVILLE, so I could stop right there; 0549 UT
sweep tones; 0550 UT rising beeps, phone-off-hook pulses; 0554 UT fire alarm
siren & bells; very slow Morse spelling out WBOB a few times; 0555 UT
phone-off-hook; 0557 UT WBOB in Morse many times; 0558 UT sweeps upward; 0559
UT beeps upward; 0600 UT phone-off-hook; 0603 UT fire alarm; 0605 UT I hear a
voice mention Jacksonville, but suspect it was coincidental at end of Fox
``news`` from WMT; etc., etc. Tnx for the test, reportedly with 35 kW
non-direxional day power and ND pattern rather than 9.5 kW out into the
Atlantic normally at night (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

CKAT was playing classic country Russ. I had them in at my locale. Just 70
miles NW in St. Cloud MN CJWW was reported in which I believe I still need.

Re: [IRCA] not WBOB-600

2016-01-10 Thread Bruce Portzer
I replayed my recording of 600 from last night and haven't found any
traces of the WBOB test.

KCOL was dominant most of the time with Coast to Coast and several IDs.
It was occasionally joined by a second CtC station (probably KOGO) and
an unid country station (probably CJWW).

Thanks to everyone who helped organize and publicize this test. It was
worth a try here.

I just heard a nice clear KCOL ID a couple of minutes ago (maybe
around
0638 UT). It's dominant here in Seattle, with a trace of something
in the

background. That's on the 150 degree lobe of the K9AY.

I've mostly been doing unattended recording so far, so there might be
more there when I play back the file. Judging from the reports, I
shouldn't get my hopes up for WBOB.

Anyone have a link for KCOL? I suspect that's what I'm hearing weakly
cochannel to a very powerful CJWW (S 9+10). Still no sign of
WBOB. Walt

Re: [IRCA] not WBOB-600

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Martin
I found the sweep tones at 0202 EST and a bit later some tones and also phone
off the hook sounds. I still need to go back and re-run the cassette tape to
see if any code or voice IDs came through the jumble. My beverage is not as
directional as I would like at the bottom of the band. Above 1200 it is very
directional.
