Patrick, of course Russia is long gone from SW and LW, and very little on
AM anymore. A 5 kw Avtoradio still broadcasts from Kamchatka on 531 (I
think). At least they were still there when I checked in October.
Otherwise zero. Korea and Japan should be easy, though, as you sayWalt

[IRCA] TP 16 Jan Victoria version

2016-01-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Most of the DX went to Alberta this morning, but there was a (very)
mild sunrise enhancement

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese 1318UT; a tiny bit of audio 1524- 1537UT,
could have been man and woman in Chinese. Slightly better on north Flag

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

972 HLCA? androgynous male ballad 1331UT, a few minutes later, man
and woman talking, but too weak to tell language, possibly
Korean? Signal crept in and out for next 20 minutes, but mostly gone by 1400UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

774 no pips at 1400UT, but man talking, maybe Japanese 1401UT
1116 man talking 1544UT, sounded like DU English inflection, maybe a
commercial?

1557 jazzy female vocal 1546-7UT, Taiwan?

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

738 1323 1386

best wishes,

Nick

I have mvoed, again. This time I am in Galena, Alaska. It's a village of 500
people about 300 miles west of Fairbanks and 300 miles east of Nome. I'm
Program Director for Big River Public Broadcasting, Incorporated's "Community
Radio For Alaska" KIYU. The AM is off but will be back on soon.

We currently operate a network of about 8 low powered (100 watt class d) FM
signals. We run some NPR programming but also oldies music and local or
regional programming.

I haven't had time to set up a long wire or other antenna yet but using my
Sangean ATS909X up here, there's a HIGH level of electrical noise on the
property.. we also have a few FM transmitters an a 10 watt low power digital tv
transmitter.. all 20 feet above my head.

I took my Sangean ATS909X to a piece of property across from the radio station
about 4pm one afternoon and using just the whip, I tuned SW.. and also tuned AM
(using just the ferrite bar type antenna in the radio).

I heard NOTHING on AM, not even the 25kw of KNOM 780 or 50kw or KICY 850 or the
50kw of KJNP 1170.

I did hear "Esta Es Radio Habana Cuba" on one of their 11mhz frequencies. I
also heard China Radio International On the 11 or 13mhz bands and somewhere in
the 17mhz. I didn't hear WWV or WWVH.

There used to be a DXer who lived in Palmer AK that logged all African and
European countries on MW back in the 50s & 60s. Up in McKinley Park in the 60s,
the dial in the Winter was full of European stations. I got Norway & Germany
during the day in the Winter in Seward. As far North as Galena is, the dial
should be loaded with foreign DX. Russia, Korea, & Japan are also very strong.

A DX angle, Paul. Re SW: no one targets Alaska, so everything you hear
will be off-beam. Even comparing Victoria to Masset, which is 1000 km or
less to the NW, I hear a big difference in signal strength: much weaker in
Masset. Of course, I have no noise there, so S/N is much better than down
hear, and I've heard plenty of stations not heard in Victoria. Do try for
India, Pakistan, Korea, etc that often come in very well in Masset.
Mongolia, too. On MW, if things are not auroral, I expect you to hear
Japan, Korea, and China fairly well in the mornings. If A/K indices are
really good, and no aurora at all, try for over the pole for MW DX during
darkness paths to Europe and Central Asia. I often hear them well, but
generally the last few years have not been kind for trans-Polar reception.
I predict that in a couple of years, as we approach solar minimum, you
should hear Europe and central Asia well. I recall hearing many Iranian MW
stations during the afternoon in winter from Masset. A bell weather
station for over the pole MW is Radio Farda on 1575. If it's open,
anything is possible. For TP reception, always check the Japanese first
tier stations on 594, 747, 774 especially, and Korea on 1566 and
occasionally VOA Thailand on 1575. We're in the winter doldrums for TP
reception, though, so not surprising that you may not hear much. On SW, do
try for Vancouver 6160. In booms into Masset, so should propagate well to
Galena with CBC Vancouver programming. All at 1 kW or less. There you go!
  Walt
PS: Also, compared to the eastern part of NA, SW signals on the west coast
are a fraction of theirs, too!

When KULF was sold three years ago the asset purchase agreement said it was
going to have to move its transmitter site. There's no CP to move so perhaps
there's a dispute over whether the station has the right to have access to the
site.

It'll be interesting to read what you hear from up there.

I also find it interesting that I met you that one time in South Carolina and
now you're about as far from there you can get and still be in the United

2016-01-16 Thread Patrick Martin

It reminds me of Whittier AK in the 50s when we lived there. A small airport
and train that went from Portage Junction to Whittier. I guess you can drive to
Whittier now. But there wasn't much there either. My Dad worked for the
Columbia Lumber Company in those days. We lived in a lot of smaller towns.
Living in Anchorage in the Winter was a plus as it was a larger town with
stores. The coldest I have been in was -38F in Anchorage in 1958, if I remember
correctly. At my age now, I would not like it. I do remember living in Seward
in the 1960s, much of the time in the Winter when I wasn't in school, I was
either doing homework or DXing/QSLing. There wasn't a lot more to do. Of course
shoveling of snow so my father could get out to go to work in the morning. I do
not miss that. hi.

Subject: [NRC-AM] DX'ing from a new location, AGAIN!

2016-01-16 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It's all relative The weather and prices are what you make of it..
Either deal with it or you don't make it. It's gotten down to -17 below so
far.

The station is in town .. We have a local "grocery store", a liquor store
with some fooda bar, a post office, a cafe and that's about it in terms
of shops.

Paul,

I am sure prices in Alaska is expensive, especially in an small town like
Galena. Even though I have never been there, I have looked at pictures of the
town through the years. Even though we moved from AK in 1967, it has always
been an interest of mine.I was going to ask you, how you find the weather, but
you have lived in some cold areas already. So probably having snow on the
ground it not a surprise to you. What kind of stores are there? Probably I
would guess, not at of variety. Is KIYU right in town? Again, I do look forward
in your reports.
Take care.

Re: [IRCA] DX'ing from a new location, AGAIN!

2016-01-16 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Paul,

Wow, what a switch! As many know I lived in AK from 1955-67. I started DXing
in Seward in 1962. Dxing from the 49th state is a different World. I know where
Galena is and it is quite remote, as flying in and out is the way of travel.
KIYU used to be part of a 3 station Educational network including KSKO Mc
Graph, and KZPA Fort Yukon. Those two I have heard and QSL'd, but I have not
heard KIYU as yet. Any chance of a DX test? Good luck Paul, and I will be
looking forward to any DX reports. It is hard to find a location in today's
World where there are no AM's heard. It may take an outdoor antenna.
It has been many years since there were any DXers reporting from the 49th
state.

73,

Patrick

Of course, when the AM gets back on and we get programming and transmission
stuff straightened out, I am sure a DX test can be worked out!

Yes, KIYU was once part of a network with KDKO 870 McGrath and KZPA 900
Fort Yukon, The KSKO-AM license has been turned in and deleted, they are FM
only now.

I wil leventually get settled and find some quiet place to do some DX'ing.
My studio window and my apartment window are only 500 feet from the Yukon
River.

Living here isn't as much of a shock to my system as some might think, Im
used to rural remote locations.. I just have to get used to planning ahead
and ordering extra of a certain item online and plan on taking it longer to
get here.. plsu some stuff bought in town is super expensive.

Be prepared for a super small plane ride to Galena lol I flew from little
rock to houston, houston to seattle to anchorage then anchorage to
fairbanks to ruby to galena. The little plane flights a bit expensive
compared to what you pay for a flight on a major airline.

We're working on some exciting stuff here

OK - keeping everyone in the loop -- www.ircaonline.com

Have installed the base system (have preserved all the files and
docs that I cooked up for the "last" Beta version of the IRCA site...)
and have moved onto "Joomla" as the framework content management software
(CMS)

It does not really look like anything at the moment but if you want
a sense of what it could like like -

head over to RocketTheme.com (I maintain paid subscriptions to this site)
They create "themes" or "skins" for Joomla and Wordpress sites -

http://www.rockettheme.com/joomla/templates

If Wordpress was underwhelming, Joomla is likely overkill for a
club that has around 200 members - that said, one day we may blossom
into a radio club with 500 or 1000 members - so this is a great step towards
readiness!

I will test out a few themes (and here is the neat thing about Joomla
websites...)
- you can apply different themes to different pages or sections -- so it is
almost
impossible to get lost on a website powered by this product.

Anyway - let's keep the fun alive.

[IRCA] DX'ing from a new location, AGAIN!

2016-01-16 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I have mvoed, again. This time I am in Galena, Alaska. It's a village of
500 people about 300 miles west of Fairbanks and 300 miles east of Nome.
I'm Program Director for Big River Public Broadcasting, Incorporated's
"Community Radio For Alaska" KIYU. The AM is off but will be back on soon.

We currently operate a network of about 8 low powered (100 watt class d) FM
signals. We run some NPR programming but also oldies music and local or
regional programming.

I haven't had time to set up a long wire or other antenna yet but using my
Sangean ATS909X up here, there's a HIGH level of electrical noise on the
property.. we also have a few FM transmitters an a 10 watt low power
digital tv transmitter.. all 20 feet above my head.

I took my Sangean ATS909X to a piece of property across from the radio
station about 4pm one afternoon and using just the whip, I tuned SW.. and
also tuned AM (using just the ferrite bar type antenna in the radio).

I heard NOTHING on AM, not even the 25kw of KNOM 780 or 50kw or KICY 850 or
the 50kw of KJNP 1170.

I did hear "Esta Es Radio Habana Cuba" on one of their 11mhz frequencies. I
also heard China Radio International On the 11 or 13mhz bands and somewhere
in the 17mhz. I didn't hear WWV or WWVH.

[IRCA] Back to the drawing board for BETA IRCA site

2016-01-16 Thread R. Colin Newell
The (free and open source) content management software
that I have been using for the new IRCA site (Wordpress) does not support
a community forum and file management (and member management)
that lives up to my expectations - so I am going to scrap this
concept and move on to something that is based on "Joomla" -
currently the Planet's most popular "portal" style content management
software (also free and open source...)

The deal breaker with Wordpress was the lack of "forum" software
that allowed an easy organization of discussion and the easy ability to
upload media like MP3 files and photos. Without these features any
new IRCA website would be, in my opinion, lame - and could not grow into
the future.

The other issue with Wordpress is the level of monetization that has taken
place -
with "free" software plugins with dozens of costly add-ons to make the base
software do what it's supposed to do.

Anyway - I would like to thank everyone for their participation in this leg
of the project - for their opinions and first hand experiences with a new
website.

I will start in on something new today and in the next couple of days will
have the framework up for a completely new (and better) web experience.

73 and good DX everyone!

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 16 January 2016

2016-01-16 Thread Nigel Pimblett
This morning it was great to discover that Asia still exists.
Although I can't claim to have checked every day, I have at least made a
cursory check most days, and this was the first time I'd heard an Asian
audio in 2016.

747 JAPAN, Sapporo JOIB
Poor level, with woman in Japanese at 1455, //774.

774JAPAN, AkitaJOUB
Man in Japanese at 1456. Poor, briefly reaching fair just after
the hour.

828 JAPAN, OsakaJOBB
Time pips noted at 1500, but otherwise only a few words noted now
and then.

873 JAPAN, Kumamoto JOGB
Time pips heard at 1500, but that was about it.

972 KOREA, SHLCA
Woman talking in Korean at 1502.

1566KOREA, SHLAZ
Poor, with woman in Chinese when first noted at 1456, but was fair
for a while after the hour, and was the last to fade out at 1520.

Quite a few other carriers, but the only ones close to audio were 594,
1377 and 1593.
