Highly coveted loop. Craig once in a blue moon shows up to a MDXC(Minnesota
DX Club) meeting. Maybe when he chooses to retire will he make more.

[IRCA] Stations on 1710 KHz

2016-02-01 Thread Les Rayburn
Despite checking the frequency on a nearly nightly basis for years, I can
honestly say that I’ve yet to log any station on 1710 KHz. This includes
pirates, TIS stations, etc.

To my knowledge only one TIS station is authorized to broadcast here, which I
believe to be
WQFG689
 in
Hudson County, New Jersey

I’ve seen lots of reports of pirates broadcasting on this frequency, but have
never logged anything. Wondering if other DX’ers in the Southeast have had
similar results or is it just me?

Please let me know what stations you hear regularly on 1710Khz, legal or
otherwise and your location. I’m eager to compare notes. Thanks.

73,

Les Rayburn, N1LF

[IRCA] Slightly OT - the longevity of cassette tape

2016-02-01 Thread R. Colin Newell
I am just getting around to digitizing some 20+ hours of tapes from the
70's and 80's -
Mostly station ID's, medium wave DX and lots of SW stations (now defunct of
course...)

And it never ceases to amaze me the longevity of cassette -

Reel to reel tape is a little different - somewhat older technology and
whichever glue they use
to bind the magnetic ferrite media to the mylar often degrades over time.

My oldest tapes are from 1975 and they sound pretty much as recorded -- but
with some "print through"
on the occasional section.

Re: [IRCA] Stations on 1710 KHz

2016-02-01 Thread Tim Tromp
Hi Les,

I've logged three different TIS stations here within the last 2-3 years. I
haven't DXed the channel in a long time (more on that below), so I can't
confirm if all three are still on the air. Perhaps the last two were heard
testing, I don't remember anymore. The three I'm thinking of are:

1) Hudson County, NJ. TIS

2) Springfield Armory National Historic Site TIS (Springfield, MA.)

3) Flight 93 Memorial TIS (two locations: at the PA Turnpike facilities at
Bedford Exit 146 & Somerset Exit 110

The pirates that I routinely hear are:

1) W807 "Geo Research Rock Radio", operating in the Chicago area.

2) "CHIM-FM", Northern Ontario with what looks & sounds like an FM signal
on 1710.

Since WRCR signed on 1700, 1710 is destroyed here because of their IBOC
sidebands. Because of this interference, and the fact that more TIS
stations have appeared on 1710, the hobby pirates are avoiding 1710. As a
result, I don't even bother DXing the channel anymore. At one time it was
an interesting channel to monitor for those stations "that go bump in the
night". Some pirates were sporadically trying 1720 kHz 1-2 years ago.

This has been my perspective from Michigan. Recordings of my 1710-1720
receptions are uploaded here for anyone interested:

I've been impressed with its performance when I've had the opportunity to use
one at DX get-togethers and DXpeditions. But the darn thing is just too big
and cumbersome for me to own personally. I like having a loop antenna that is
easily portable and can fit inside a gym bag -- or a suitcase if it doesn't
take up a lot of room amidst all the clothes.

I currently own a Quantum QX Pro loop, but it has a nagging short below the
tuning knob, and I'm thinking of unloading it soon. Would absolutely LOVE to
find a Palomar LA-1 for sale, along with accompanying loopheads for MW and LW.
Every time I've seen one go on sale recently on Ebay, though, it's been
snatched up before I can make a bit on it.

I would still love to have one. I wish I could find one in good working order,
for a good price.

All-This came to the website email address. If you are interested, please
respond to j...@auctionjohn.com - thanks!
---The Western ElectricCW-936 Radiotelephone set was developed by Western
Electric for the Departmentof the Navy during WWI for use primarily on sub
chaser (U-Boat) ships.   The complete CW-936Radiotelephone set consisted of the
following major components:   The WE CW-928 power switch board,
  two CW-927 dynamotors,   the CW-938 transmitter-receiver,
the CW-926A audio amplifier,   the CW-969 antenna switch,   the
CW-930 microphone,   the CW-834 headset and   the CW-929 Horn
Speaker.  The transmitter and theaudio amplifier operated directly off the 350
volt outputs of the CW-927dynamotors.  The entire system operatedfrom the
ship's 30 volt storage batteries. This first completely successfulvoice
modulated equipment was designed for use on any one of fivefrequencies.  The
frequency could beshifted to any one of these, all of which were within the
band 500-1,500 kc.,by means of a simple frequency change switch which cut in
different fixedvalues of capacity and inductance for each of the five switch
positions.   For auction is theCW-938 transmitter-receiver manufactured by
Western Electric for the Navy in1918.  The piece is in the original woodcase.
As seen within the pictures, this isa complete piece with no visible signs of
damage.  The box and components show no evidence ofmodification or restoration.
There are 3VT-1 vacuum tubes and 2 VT-2 vacuum tubes that are intact within
thepiece.  There are 2 additional VT-2vacuum tubes that will be included within
the auction.  This is a very rare piece and another may notbe seen for many
years.  Go to www.clevelandonlineauctions.com and search through the list for
the auctionwith the Honda Mini-Bike as the photo for the auction.
(this piece is said to be in very good condition and has been appraised at up
to $20,000)

oh, and add 999 too.

[IRCA] TP 1 Feb Victoria version

2016-02-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Sunrise enhancement came early, about 1520UT, as well as some earlier
activity, but that mostly took a vacation from 1415 to just after 1500UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ started to peak during the Japanese program 1326UT with
animated discussion between a couple of men. A good run from 1337
to s/off at 1345UT, first with man in Japanese, then woman giving the
usual announcement including a nice "H-L-A-zeto desu" ID. Chinese
program followed, and for another 10 minutes also had quite a solid
signal, though not quite as strong as the Japanese program had been.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

738 Tahiti, homme et dame en francais, rap musique 1001-2 UT
1593 CNR1 man in Chinese 1343-5UT peak, but hung around for the next
half hour, in and out, though pips at 1400UT were quite weak

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK woman in Japanese 1522UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

567 JOIK woman talking //594 1519UT
774 sounded like English lessons 1422UT
1314 bit of instrumental music, then man declaiming, didn't sound
Japanese, Tagalog maybe?
1557 Taiwan? traces of jazzy female singing 1528UT; pretty much the
end of the line for sunrise

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

549 747 1044 1053 1098 1116 1125 1386 1422 1503

best wishes,

Nick
