[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 19 February 2016

2016-02-19 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A complete bust here this morning as far as Asia or DU went, but
enjoyed a good upper band opening to Hawaii. Actually my best Hawaiian
morning of the season.

1420	KKEA, Honolulu Tough reception through KUJ with ESPN programming,
and definite KKEA call ID at 1400. New here.

1460	KHRA?? (very tentative)	A very strong KUTI made things very tough,
but heard possible ID by woman prior to time pips at 1400.

1540	KREA, Honolulu Another new one here. About even with KXPA with
man and woman in Korean at 1359, and ID just past the hour, "This is
KREA, Honolulu, 1540 on the AM dial"

1570	KUAU, Haiku My only semi-common Hawaiian. Totally owned the
frequency this morning, with ID by woman at 1400, and then into usual
religious talk.

Usually when I hear Hawaii, I'm also hearing DU signals, or at least
Tahiti, but this morning that wasn't the case. The opening didn't
extend lower down the band. 1270 had a mystery station as well, with
ethnic programming under KTFI. KNDI seems a possible candidate, but
didn't hear anything in the way of an ID.

Reminds me of sunset on the shore at Granite Pier, Rockport, MA versus 15 miles
/ 25 km inland at Billerica, MA about a 55 minute drive away. Live DX in the
car at the seaside and same-time unattended home reception for comparisons were
done a few times along with a lot of long term observations for both sites.

A ridiculous difference: the Algerian then on 1544 now 1550 hitting S9+40 at
the pier and maybe about S8 peak inland. 760 Fortaleza, Brazil Q5 and S9 at
Rockport and down in the noise at Billerica even on a better antenna. 1 kW
Spaniards doing better at the shore than 100+ kW ones in the same frequency
range did inland.

Over several decades, 25 or so Brazilians heard at coastal sites on Cape Ann
and Cape Cod. Maybe about 5 heard in suburbs northwest of Boston. Go out to
central MA and once in a while you *might* get the 1100 and 1220 Globo's once
in a blue moon.

Crazy differences. And that, my friends, is why we DXpedition.

Look at this pattern for WJDA 1300 Quincy, MA, a one-stick NON-directional
station. Though it's for groundwave I have no trouble believing that long-haul
skip would behave about the same way.
http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/pictures1/wjda-1300_pattern.gif

For each 1 mile you go west you can go 10 miles east for the same amount of
attenuation.

Then, thinking as a DXer, superimpose a cardioid pattern terminated loop on
that, further stretching out the transoceanic reach and suppressing stateside
pests. That's why loggings from DXpeditions seem totally nutty compared to
most DXers' home results. It's true whether East Coast or West Coast.
Newfoundland and Haida Gwaii are likely the most extreme.

Here in the states, I wish AM's would realize that. We could do with a 50%
reduction ion AM stations and still have plenty. I am hoping I will live long
enough to see the AM dial return to what it once was. It is way too jammed.

Will likely lead no where.

No one in their right mind would put the money into an AM station --

FM or online streaming.

The future for us DXer's is a very lean medium wave with lots of big clear
channel stations and better opportunities to
DX what is left of AM worldwide.

I inquire, so Bill, you're convinced that you're getting better across the
band F/B with a vactrol than with a fixed Rt? Or are you just using the
vactrol to squeeze out a few dB more F/B in a part of the band?

Hmm.. me things that I need to test this.

DKAZ fix up continues here and I have great termination on one of my 21 x

2016-02-19 Thread Neil Kazaross
Bill wrote, "If you’re living along a coast and point mostly in one

I inquire, so Bill, you're convinced that you're getting better across the
band F/B with a vactrol than with a fixed Rt? Or are you just using the
vactrol to squeeze out a few dB more F/B in a part of the band?

Hmm.. me things that I need to test this.

DKAZ fix up continues here and I have great termination on one of my 21 x
120 footers aimed due west. As an example, I live 35 miles NW of Chicago
and basically can't tell that their 950 AM is on the air at night and
Denver is my dominant.

2016-02-19 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
Indeed it is GRF Gary. I realized early this morning that it only shows
on the ALA100 phased array when I have that connected (the DKaz is deaf on
LW), so went down there to check, and 'GRF' beacon is reasonably strong,
though not overpowering.

best wishes,

The 216 kHz signal is undoubtedly 216-GRF, an NDB pest in Fort Lewis (now
called JBLM, in between Tacoma and Olympia).
It is the strongest NDB pest on the entire band here in Puyallup.

Re: [IRCA] Fwd: Grayland Fishbarrel

2016-02-19 Thread Bill Whitacre
Thanks for putting that up Nick. Sitting in the room next to you it’s nice to
be able to graphically illustrate the ‘miracle’ that is Grayland. ;-)

I would remind people that it takes more than a couple of blue bars to make an
‘audible’ signal though. In comparing bars to ears I’m guessing, depending on
modulation level, one needs at least 2 or probably 3 bars before audio is
forthcoming.

Still, the difference between Grayland and your home QTH in Victoria is amazing!

The high A-index and disturbed geomag cx have created an odd combination of
‘summer’-like DU and Pacific Island stations and more normal ‘winter’ Japanese
fare. One thing we’re probably not hearing much of is Alaska.

If you’re living along a coast and point mostly in one direction for your DX,
the DKAZ with Vactrol remote termination control is ‘THE way to go!’
