[IRCA] TP 25 Feb Victoria version

2016-02-25 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

A nice short and sharp enhancement 1442 to about 1447UT this morning

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ man in Japanese 1258UT, and held up reasonably well until
1345UT pattern change. The Chinese program eventually matched this
reception 1445-1447UT w/man in Chinese

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

558 HLQH female vocal //603 1445UT
567 JOIK NHK1 theme music, man in Japanese //594 1446UT; someone
else underneath
585 unID, not Japan, though did briefly hear the theme music at
1446UT, as this one also peaked, laid back pop vocals; no idea, as
there was no talk.

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1425UT //567

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1593 CNR1 man in Chinese 1444UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

603 HLSA female vocal music //558 1445UT
774//828 woman talking 1300UT likely JOUB/JOBB
972 woman talking 1449UT, no real identifying characteristic
1287 man talking Japanese inflection 1444UT
1359 man mumbling 1444UT, couldn't get //1593, so don't know if CNR1
1503 JOUK woman talking //567 1444UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

531 702 738 747 891 1179 1269 1386 1422 1557

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Sign petition at KXEL.com

2016-02-25 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
** U S A. Glenn, I have been listening to KXEL on 1540 AM for the last ten
years or so. They started running an announcement for the last few days about
the FCC possibly reducing their nighttime coverage area. They asked listeners
to go to their website and sign the petition here:

http://www.kxel.com/50KPetition.aspx

This request may be a first, at least for the last couple of decades or so.
THANK YOU, (Artie Bigley, Columbus OH, Feb 24, WORLD OF RADIO 1814, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

Petition speaks only in generalities about FCC changing rules to allow more
stations on air at night, harming KXEL and other 50 kW clear channel stations
(Glenn Hauser, ibid.)

I had been hearing R. Fórmula Noticias, XEYC on 1030 as recently as Dec 29.
1460 would certainly be a clearer spot for it, with only 4
Mexicans already listed there, and nothing else in the tri-state area.
But not for here: XEYC often dominated 1030 over KTWO or anything else. I had
also been hearing Fonógrafo on 720, Centro on 1190 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX

I conclude that KOKP is in dead air instead of Triple-Play Sports.

Listening further, I hear a weak country(?) music station which seems to be
close to the KOKP direxion. Not that many 1020s in the USA, and format
unmatches any of them, near or far, in NRC AM Log. DF is no good for Mexico

something is amiss, like power lowered from 10 kW, or sticking to night pattern
in day, nulling toward Philadelphia and us; it used to be the other way round,
ND day pattern at night, when I don`t hear much from it either now (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1080+, Feb 24 at 0713 UT, country music is ripping up KRLD Dallas
talk, loops NW/SE, and only by nulling this can I get KRLD more or less clear
from the SSE. Can`t be anything but KSLL Price UT, 10 kW daytimer! once again
on air at night. Listed as Rock/OLD, so maybe crossing over a bit. It`s also
slightly off frequency to the hi side making fast SAH with KRLD (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1080, Feb 25 at 0534 UT, C music vs KRLD Dallas, i.e. KSLL Price
UT, 10 kW non-direxional daytimer still funxioning 24h. Does KRLD care? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1370, after rehearing 1380 KRCM on day power, I find something else
interesting a channel below (other than nearest KGNO Dodge City KS, which I
NEVER hear, day or night --- is it really active?) --- Feb 24 at 0706 UT, ID
for KCRV and KCRVradio.com, country music on ``AM 1370 KCRV``, loops east-west.
It`s Caruthersville MO, right on the Mississippi River across from TN in the
extreme SE corner, address in Kennett further west, 1000/63 watts U1 = always
non-direxional, per NRC AM Log (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1380, Feb 21 at 0456 UT, Spanish gospel music is dominant, and on LSB
plenty strong not to be splashed by local ESPN 1390 KCRC. Soon Spanish promo

1600 Pasadena Blvd, Pasadena TX 77562, phone 713-589-1336 during business hours
8-6 l-v, 9-6 sábado, concluding with ``aún no hemos dicho nada`` (we haven`t
said anything yet --- ??). Then ad still in Spanish for church services in
English! Jueves a 7:30 at La Iglesia del Pueblo in Pasadena, 713-920-1840. 0500
UT illegal ID ONLY for ``KMIC [letters in English], Houston, 15-90 AM, Radio

Nothing said on 1380 about 1380! Which is really KRCM, Shenandoah TX, 2800/60
watts U1 and this was no 60 watts! Or application for 22000/43 U5, per NRC AM
Log, which already had this as a R. Aleluya as of last August, at same Pasadena
address as announced above. Shenandoah is a Houston suburb to the north along
I-45 closer to Conroe, not necessarily correlating with transmitter site.

At 0500 UT Feb 21, I check 1590 anyway and don`t hear enough for a // in the

[IRCA] Grayland DXpedition - February 17-21, 2016

2016-02-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
I was fortunate enough to get to the Grayland Motel & Cottages again last week.
It was not at all clear that I would make it this year when my first attempt
ended up landing some 15 miles from where it took off when smoke filled the
cockpit of our Alaska Air flight just after take-off from Washington National
Airport:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/smoke-in-cockpit-grounds-alaska-airlines-flight/

So, shorted two days at Grayland but spared something much worse I arrived on
Wednesday, Feb. 17 to put up the usual ‘winter’ antenna - a 160’ DKAZ ‘facing’
~290 degrees. In a hurry, the first night I suffered through not only
‘disturbed’ geomag conditions but a fixed 1KOhm termination resistance [Rt].

On day 2 I replaced the fixed Rt with a Vactrol and about 500’ of CAT5 cable.
With that I was able to get ~ 30dB nulls on Portland stations and ~ 25 dB nulls
on Seattle stations — not bad considering neither is directly off-the-back of
the antenna. Those are groundwave nulls and as anyone who uses a flag antenna
will tell you those don’t hold up quite as well at night under the onslaught of
varying arrival angle skywave.

Nick Hall-Patch joined me on Thursday evening and we immediately put up a
ALA100 phased array to compare. I believe Nick will tell you that he preferred
the DKAZ except for some intermittent noise caused by a bad coax run of over
600’ — diagnosed and cured the last day of my visit.

Nick got his famous ‘DX Fishbarrel’ program going from the Grayland Motel and
it ran for most of the next couple of days. It was impressive to see the
signal levels from Grayland as compared to his home QTH in Victoria, BC. Made
it kind of hard to leave …

… but leave we did on Saturday for what turned out to be an extended drive back
to Seattle for a chance to meet with other DXers. Taking very different
alternative routes Nick and I managed to find our way to the gathering spot and
enjoyed a good rag-chew with fellow west coast DXers. Oh yes, the cause of our
alternative routes?

http://komonews.com/news/local/officer-involved-shooting-follows-high-speed-chase-in-lakewood

Nick continued on home after the gathering and I returned for one more night at
Grayland.

I’m still going thru wav files but you can see the fruits of our efforts so far
and come back over the next few weeks to see more appear at this web page:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland13.php

I can hardly wait to get back to Grayland again!

The Opti Isolator part I imagine...
Which is one of the priciest parts of the builds.

As I also have my own experience with vactrols, I thought the following
might be some interest if I may. I had a K9AY loop working for some
years here which was terminated with a vactrol, a VTL5C4 actually
http://www.quebecdx.com/vactrol.pdf

I remember that the antenna wasn't as performing as the Beverages for TA
MWDX for instance but it was a very quiet antenna nevertheless. One day,
during a great TA opening, I've got great result on this antenna
especially with former Denmark Radio on 1062 KHz.

Here's a recording where I deliberately played with the vactrol at the
beginning in order to demonstrate how I could get rid of IBOC hiss,
probably coming from WTIC at that time (actually on Sept 11 2010 at
04;00 UTC http://www.quebecdx.com/1062_dnk_k9ay.mp3

And as a coincidence, I remember having bought the vactrols over the
Internet from a BC vendor ;)

I have had 3 or 4 requests for VACTROL sets -

Here is an approximate break down of the main parts which brings
me to the price for a set for those interested.

Aluminum Box (for indoor controller) - $9.00
Binding Posts (for antenna end box) $6.00
Plastic case for outdoor antenna termination box - $5.00
BNC Connector X 2 - $8.00
10-turn Bournes vernier - $17
10-turn Bournes 500 ohm or 1000 ohm POT - $17
Power jack for wall wart - $2.00
Opti-Isolator - $12.00
V- Regulator - $2.00
Circuit boards - $3.00
Assorted resistors, capacitors, POWER LED and diodes - $2.00

*Wall-Wart and BNC terminated coaxial cable not included.*

That is 83 dollars (Canadian) [your lucky day folks to the South!]

I'd say that since we are a family, I am not going to attach any labor or
assembly costs -- so I am prepared to price these at *$85 (US)*
*shipping included* (if the shipping is around $15 or so...)

For those interested (there were 3 or 4...) send me your opinion on this.
I think I have 3 sets made already and circuit boards for 3 more sets to
populate
and I can order more circuits from OSH PARK in a heart beat.
