[IRCA] 1215 909 etc.

2016-03-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

1215 and 909 have been showing substantial carriers 0630UT and following.

Have also seen activity on 693 (will never get past CBU, same
direction from here), 1053, 1089 1485.. all UK?

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on March 1

2016-03-01 Thread Bruce Portzer
Conditions were reasonably OK today. The upper band was favored by the
propagation gods, but there were also signs of life at the low end of
the dial. A couple of stations peaked before 1400, but most of them
peaked during the sunrise enhancement at about 1440. The best signal of
the day was 1503 of all things.

GOOD
1503JOUK, briefly quite good with Japanese man 1434

FAIR
693JOAB, Chinese lesson 1344, weaker 1440 with Japanese talk
747JOIB, Japanese talk 1332 trying to cut through electrical noise
774JOUB, Chinese lesson 1353
972HLCA, woman in Korean 1427
1242JOLF, Japanese man 1440
1422JORF, Japanese woman 1439
1575VOA, female & male talking in unid language 1434

POOR
594JOAK, Japanese talk 1437
1386NHK2 woman // 693 1440
1494faint talk 1440 too weak to guess at language
1566HLAZ, male talk 1435, not nearly as strong as yesterday
1593female talk 1444, too much splash to ID the language

[IRCA] TP 1 Mar Victoria version

2016-03-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Mostly Japan, and mostly getting back to the regulars. One thing
unusual this morning was a reprise after 1600UT for 1287 and 1566,
weak audio, but audio nonetheless.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

594 JOAK two women in Japanese, often stronger than 590 stations

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIB woman in English //774 1431UT, how to serve sashimi with
wasabi and soy sauce. Mmm, could a Japanese breakfast be in my future?

774 JOUB man in Japanese 1452UT
1503 JOUK two women in Japanese 1447UT, //594

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

567 JOIK woman in Japanese //594 1435UT
612 JOLK two women in Japanese //594 1440UT, man mumbling
accompaniment by 1446UT, 4QR?

1566 HLAZ likely man in Chinese 1440UT, never amounted to much this morning
1575 VoA man in SE Asian language, but also lively music from someone
else 1439UT; faint Yankee Doodle at 1500UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 JOQG woman talking //594 slight delay 1429UT
558 HLQH laid back vocal music 1422UT, man talking 1424UT; seemed
//603 which was very weak

828 JOBB man talking //774 1430UT
972 man talking, possibly Korean, 1443UT
1386 NHK2 woman in Japanese //747 1442UT
1422 woman talking slowly 1445-6UT
1593 NHK2 woman talking //774 1430UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Re: [IRCA] 909 1215 etc

2016-03-01 Thread Neil Kazaross
If you want a DKAZ for LW you likely need to make it something like 30 ft x
250 ft or even bigger. Tim Tromp's DKAZ is 117 ft x 20 ft (all the room he
has) and he really likes it into shortwave. F/B does degrade some and the
beam widens somewhat and preferred arrival angle rises compared to BCB, but
I can certainly see where it could be quite useful and maybe the arrival
angle is good for SW often.

Re: [IRCA] 909 1215 etc

2016-03-01 Thread Don Moman VE6JY
As we all know it's good to have antenna choices. There haven't been too
many audible TA days to test it but the DKaz will sometimes produce better
results when the regular beverage antennas don't so its arrival angle must
be the one that is favoured on those days. I don't have a good handle on
what is happening but it certainly is a useful choice to have. It also
gets used on much higher mid HF frequencies and can sometimes produce
significantly better signals than any of my other choices for these
frequencies , mainly the Wellbrook ALA100 and some large HF log periodics.
The pattern seems to be reversed up that high in frequency, which seems
reasonable that it would be. It is not a good performer on longwave. Altho
I did get the posts in and the trenching etc all done last fall, I did not
complete the project which consists of 4 separate DKAZ antennas pointed
essentially NE SE SW and NW. That should be done this summer. This area
used to have a HiZ 8 vertical array which proved to be less useful than I
had hoped.

Re: [IRCA] 909 1215 etc

2016-03-01 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Neil, I built a DKAZ for my DX cottage on Haida Gwaii. I used it with
great success in October. It's aimed for Europe, so I'm looking forward to
using it again when I'm next there later in the month. I swing it around
for South Pacific reception. It does well. It's hard to do an exact A/B
comparison to the BOG which has been my stalwart DX antenna as it's aimed
more to the NW. In any case, it's a very favourable antenna as long as
it's fed to the FLG 100. I tried it last summer with just a matching
transformer, and results were quite disappointing. It was quite deaf
compared to the BOG. 73,...Walt

Nice to see that you built a DKAZ. Interesting that it was doing better
than the Bevs. What is it like for TA's when they're audible?

Are you pleased in general with the DKAZ? 73 KAZ
