You could say that. You know conditions are odd when your best bet
for a CNR1 parallel is 945 rather than anything on shortwave.

[IRCA] 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 TP-DX for 3-23

2016-03-23 Thread d1028gary
As Colin and Nick have reported the Asians were full of energy this morning,
although until late in sunrise enhancement the results here mostly favored the
Japanese and Korean big guns. Late on around 1350 there was a boost to some
relatively obscure Chinese stations on 936 and 1044, but these signals didn't
stick around for long.

At my 1305 start time the NHK big guns on 693 and 747 were setting the pace
with good peaks, along with some occasional huge signals from 972-HLCA during
its variety program. Until the first sign of daylight around 1330 these big
guns and the other Japanese on 594, 774 and 828 were the only energetic
signals, taking turns reaching very good levels at times. 972-HLCA reached
excellent levels at 1309 with Korean female talk and at 1320 with female vocal
music. Late on around 1345 some mid-band Chinese stations started getting a
late sunrise enhancement boost, with 936 (presumed Anhui) and 1044-CRI managing
weak audio peaks in and out. 738 also had weak Chinese peaks for much of the
session (with programming typical of BEL2), while 1143 was managing a strong
carrier but couldn't quite break into audio.  Other than the usual fair signals
from the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ that was pretty much the story, with the
high band distinctly anemic here. Best Asian signal of the session was from
972-HLCA, with very strong traditional Korean female vocal music at 1320.

1309

Re: [IRCA] 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 TP-DX for 3-23

2016-03-23 Thread R. Colin Newell
My first look was at 1250 UTC while powering up / preheating my oven for a
batch of sourdough bread.
The NHP radar looked pretty lively with lots of 1st tier JJ stations and
Koreans and some secondary stuff (as Nick described) Mid-band.
I went back to bed while the oven pre-heated and got up 1/2 hour later and
did a bit of a band scan. It was all lower and mid-band
with any evidence of high band excitement. In my quick tune I noted good
audio
on 558, 567, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1053 - even 1566 was putting in something
of an appearance.

As Nick pointed out, the mid-band was really bubbling with life but I had
kitchen duties to focus on so
I left the dials - good to see people profited by the good conditions.

Re: [IRCA] AM BCB DX…ELAD Captures………7 NEW Stations

2016-03-23 Thread Neil Kazaross
KGND is a super catch at your distance!! Presumably they were on with day
power early. They are very rare here, although I WMBD is a huge pest.

This log shows the advantage of having a SDR. Without it, it is doubtful
that you'd have been thinking to check 1470 at that time for this unless
you'd spotted and been intrigued by the sx format. Even then it is great to
have the recording to be certain of the phone number.

73 and well done.. KAZ

[IRCA] Daytime Band Scan-- Songtan, South Korea

2016-03-23 Thread d1028gary
For those interested, here is a very detailed AM Band Scan from Chris Kadlec in
Songtan, South Korea (from Facebook):
Songtan, Korea Daytime Bandscan

Here's an AM daytime bandscan at my FM site in Songtan, Korea, about 30 miles
south of my main AM site here in Seoul. While there are 61 stations heard at my
FM site, my inner-city AM site isn't as lucky and has only half that number
(though a few more than 200 regular stations at night). My local 972 causes
some silent noise across the band at this site, though the station doesn't turn
on til mid-afternoon while its sister station 1170 turns off about the same
time. Others are also part-time, including a few jammers and Pyongyang
stations.

The attached map is for location purposes only and shows the local FM stations.
I have yet to make time for an AM station map in the future, but it's not so
impressive.

Thanks Guys……Every once in a while I am just in the right place at the right
time….for a change!! Eventually a little luck has to come everyone's way!

I've been making Grabs at the TOH at Sunset and Sunrise for about the last year
now, and I'm quite amazed what the SDR finds that I would otherwise never have
a chance of hearing.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 23 March 2016

2016-03-23 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Interesting to read about the Asian action out west today. None
of it made it over the Rockies, with 1566 providing the only Asian
audio, with a rather feeble signal noted at 1301. Also had one DU,
1548 from Australia, which was a fair bit better than HLAZ, with man
talking at 1259, and fair audio through the first couple of minutes of
the news.

Back in the 1960's I remember hearing Curtis Howe Springer on XEMO 860. He
broadcast from Zzyzx Mineral Springs resort, Mojave Desert. He would talk for a
while then bring on the girls to sing some gospel music. Sometimes you could
hear the record needle scraping the record as he try to find the beginning of
the song.  Best regards,

To be quite honest, Les, this is nothing new.  Back when Art Bell hosted the
program, he used to do reads for a product called Dr. Duplisky's Super Prostate
Formula.  I would listen to one of these and think that it all sounded like a
lot of hooey.

Now, I'm too young to remember this (I'm 51 and didn't start DXing until 1981),
but I've heard stories about how, back in the 1950s and 1960s, the border
blasters like XERF would run ads for doctors that were only slightly less shady
than snake oil salesmen.  Supposedly they would hawk things like goat gland
operations that were designed to spice up your sex life, or some such.  Makes
me think that maybe all-night radio hasn't changed much through the years,
after all.

[IRCA] Black gospel on 1640 ID'd after all these years?

2016-03-23 Thread Rick Dau
Hey Pat!

Wanted to show you this and compare it with what you heard in April 1998

First, my logging from eastern Iowa:

10/13/1998 2305 EDT - With KCJJ running an open carrier and WKSH having already
signed off for the night, I noted someone here, albeit faintly, with singing
from a black church choir. Only stayed in for about a minute before fading,
then KCJJ came back on with a pop song shortly afterwards, and the splatter
completely took out 1640. Didn't hear an ID, but WKSH can, of course, be ruled
out, and KDIA, the last I knew, was running an R&B/soul oldies format from the
70s.

Here, Pat, is what you heard a few months before:

1640 - KKSL - OR LAKE OSWEGO, fair with lots of QRM from KDIA, KKSL w/Black
Gospel pgm at 2300 EDT (0300 UTC), many KKSL IDs. Only could log with 3 foot
Sanserino Loop, as KDIA was too strong off all my other antennas. This was on
4/15. Taped report sent. (PM-OR)

Whaddaya think? A close enough match for me to count it? I should note that
the official CLs for the 1640 at the time were KKJY.

[IRCA] TP 23 Mar Victoria version

2016-03-23 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Quite a change from yesterday, and for the most part, as Bruce
observed, not much to show on the upper band, although 1323 was as
readable as it's been this season I think. On the other hand, I don't
recall 594 making much of a showing today.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

747 JOIB Chinese lessons 1344UT
774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1341UT //828
828 JOBB as above 1341UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 JOIK man in Japanese //594 1402UT (594 was much weaker)
945 CNR1 man in Chinese //981, 1356UT, better on north Flag
963 CRI man in Russian //1323 1348UT
972 HLCA man in Korean 1408UT, and of course, pips at 1400UT, but
1343UT was decidedly odd on this channel. There seemed to be two
stations, one with a woman in a harangue didn't quite seem right for
this station unless she was calling in to give them a piece of her
mind. Then a man and a woman faded up, and by 1344UT were dominant,
yet they sounded almost Chinese, like a play of some sort, yet by
1348UT, they seemed to have become Korean. (this was in weakly as
late as 1505UT this morning)

1323 CRI woman in Russian 1340UT
1566 HLAZ man in Chinese 1401UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

873 JOGB man in Japanee //747 at 1325UT
981 CNR1 man in Chinese, //6030 and 945; 945 was better than any SW
parallel which were quite poor this morning

1053 Korean jammer 1345UT; ground to a halt at 1401UT
1287 JOHR man in Japanese, another man agreeing 1348UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

738 man talking, French inflection 1401UT; pop music at 1330UT was
somewhat stronger but no possibility of identification

819 N. Korea? man haranguing 1337UT, creeping past 820 splash
1044 CRI, ID'd at 1400UT with chimes and fanfare, but had been a
couple of times in the previous 20 minutes

1116 man talking, Chinese intonation 1353UT
1143 woman talking, maybe Chinese 1318UT
1575 woman sounding SE Asian, after what sounded like VoA fanfare 1401UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

621 702 864 918 936 1017 1035 1089 1098 1296

best wishes,

Nick
