[IRCA] Japanese DXers Arrive for Rockwork 4 DXpedition

2016-07-09 Thread d1028gary
The famous Japanese DXers Hiroo Nakagawa and Satoshi Miyauchi have arrived to
participate in the Rockwork 4 DXpedition.here in Oregon state. Tonight the full
DXpedition team (Tom Rothlisberger, Nick Hall-Patch, the Japanese guests and
me) had a wonderful welcoming dinner at the aptly-named "Tsunami" restaurant in
Wheeler, OR.

Both Hiroo-san and Satoshi-san seemed awestruck in their first visit to the
wild ocean cliff site. A video of their first visit to Rockwork 4 is posted at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4cz1otmP3o&feature=youtu.be  , during which
Hiroo-san says "kangeki shite imasu," meaning "I'm deeply moved."

Re: [IRCA] First Rockworks impression

2016-07-09 Thread k7wv
All;
The driver was the problem. I have just solved the problem by deleting the
device from device manager and reinstalling with a different driver that it
likes with a little trickery (it's unsigned). Ready for Cliffside action in the
AM.

Today's conditions were underwhelming with the often heard big stations only
and low band only. With the two Japanese DXers Satoshi and Hiroo here we can
hope for improvement with at least 5 DXers at the cliffs tomorrow.

Disasters? Tom seemed to have been fed a Windows 10 update that made his
Perseus mute; fortunately, there was a netbook available that had Perseus
software on it and was still functional. Thank you Windows 8. So we have
Perseus recordings through the peak of the opening.

Re: [IRCA] First Rockworks impression

2016-07-09 Thread Bruce Portzer

A few comments on Chuck's rules.

To step 5, I would restart the PC after it's powered down, run a few key
programs, then shut it down. I've found from experience that weird
things occasionally happen when a computer boots up so this is one
further sanity check.

There's a notorious malware named Perseus, so some anti-virus programs
freak out when the see a program by that name. Norton Security Suite
deleted the Perseus software twice PC without asking, telling me it had
a "bad reputation". I eventually figured out how to tell Norton not to
touch the Perseus folder.

I can't recall any issues with leaving wi-fi turned on while recording
with SDRs, although I can see Chuck's point.

Chuck's Rules For DXpedition Equipment :

Computer:

(1) A week before the trip, force an installation of all available Windows
updates.

(2) Next, disable Internet access so no new updates can get downloaded nor can
the Internet wreak havoc. Note that Windows updates are downloaded any old time
but installed at 3AM if you let Windows do auto updates. That means turning
Internet access off Tuesday night won't prevent an update from being installed
Wednesday morning if the update was downloaded Monday.

(3) Disable anti-virus so there is no chance of it using too much PC resources
or being foolish.

(4) Test operation with Perseus to make sure the updates weren't a problem.

(5) Let the computer run a day so Windows can re-index files, adjust to the
updates, etc. When Task Manager says all is quiet, power off the computer.

(6) Don't mess with it any more.

(7) Know what your battery state is for the intended usage. Battery life
depends on how hard the PC works: sitting on your desk mostly idle is way
different from running Perseus full time and recording. Do a test. If your
battery is not up to the task:

(a) for the common 19V charger input, connect a 12V and 6V battery in series and use
them as a "charger".

(b) buy a "power bank" lithium battery with a 19V output (assuming 19V is
correct). Advantages: light, easily rechargable. Disadvantages: may generate interference.

(c) if near a car, buy a cigarette lighter 19V source. Likely to generate
interference.

(8) If Internet access is needed, use a cellphone or cheap tablet. Don't use
the Perseus computer.

Never use a DXpedition as a guinea pig to test equipment. Most recent example:
Jim's dead battery required using an untested cigarette lighter adapter and it
generated a lot of switching noise.

Another issue is interference generated by all the electronic equipment. Yo
prevent that, I use big 2.4 inch type 31 ferrite cores on the Perseus power
cable, Perseus USB cable and Perseus RF input. With 2 Perseii and 2 laptops I
have no birdies in the MW band. Unfortunately, a non-filtered version of the
above will yield many birdies.

I won't mention the normal stuff like disk maintenance.

Knock on wood, I've never had a computer issue. In addition to the Tom/Nick
story and Jim's story below, we had 2 issues at Newfoundland: (1) twice, some
files were not recorded due to a reset after updates and (2) a laptop with
battery issues seems to have shut down.

So, even though it is a pain, I think it is worthwhile to make sure your system
won't fail you on a DXpedition.

FWIW, I just updated to Win10 a few days ago.

The Perseus works fine with the Perseus software and HDSDR.

It will also work with Studio1, but at the moment the software receives
KIRO-710 regardless of the frequency I have entered. I have the same
problem with the Elad, so it's a software problem and not a receiver
problem. Or maybe operator error.

According to Device Manager, I'm using a Perseus driver dated 6/17/2013.

2016-07-09 Thread k7wv
You got it Chuck, Laptop will not recognize the Perseus hardware. Been trying
drivers all day to no avail. Zadig installer included. The signed drivers by
Nico are a dead link. Huge Win 10 update installed uncommanded on July 4 while
visiting Denver with the laptop. No restore point created. I do have backup in
the form of the MSI Wind U100 that never failed to capture DX. It's 4 hours
away in Seattle. My bad.

A Win 10 update caused the Perseus to mute? OK, unmute it But I get the
feeling that you don't mean mute in the normal sense where audio was stopped by
a button push. What did happen, so we can be forewarned?

I'll take a wild guess... It wouldn't talk to the PC? If so, maybe it tossed
out old unsigned drivers as they are not considered registered? If so, Nico had
uploaded signed drivers and you can always use the Zadig approach. Delete above
if not the problem.

Disasters? Tom seemed to have been fed a Windows 10 update that made his
Perseus mute; fortunately, there was a netbook available that had Perseus
software on it and was still functional. Thank you Windows 8. So we have
Perseus recordings through the peak of the opening.

Re: [IRCA] 850 Minnesota

2016-07-09 Thread Rick Dau

Steve, I'm not aware of any daytimers on 850 that were given sunset + 2 hours.
KFUO in Clayton (St. Louis), Missouri (Neil, I think this is the station you
were thinking of earlier) is allowed to stay on until sunset in Denver, but,
AFAIK, every other daytimer on 850 -- WQRM included -- should be signing off at
its local sunset.

[IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 7-9

2016-07-09 Thread d1028gary
Tom and I were honored to welcome our first international participant to the
cliff this morning (well, OK, Nick of Victoria, BC).  Fortunately we had the
Highway 101 turnoff to ourselves for antenna setup this morning, but Nick
encountered a typical Rockwork 4 session featuring rain, wind and Murphy's Law.

I was separated from Tom and Nick by about 10 meters, and my south side of the
turnoff was crammed with the usual 4 large FSL antennas, Ultralight radios and
digital recorders. Having learned the hard way that 1017-Tonga has only one
late sign-off per week (on their late Saturday night), a determined effort was
made to set up my largest (17") FSL immediately upon arrival at the cliff (at
the bizarre hour of 0330 local, or 1030 UTC). The effort paid off with fairly
good reception of foreign language from the station around 1130, while all of
us were still setting up our antennas in the predawn darkness. The propagation
once gain favored New Zealand (so what is new?), with very potent signals from
the usual regulars (including an awesome signal from the 2.5 kW 765-Kahungunu).
From my standpoint the more obscure Kiwis (576, 585, 936 etc.) seemed to be
playing hard to get, though, while Australian signals seemed to have fallen off
of the cliff. Nick and Tom were both able to record various NZ signals 1 kHz
away from domestics (such as the 1 kW 549-Trackside) which were fairly hopeless
with my rudimentary-filtered Ultralights, but Murphy's Law's typically has no
chance to knock out such crude radios (which depend on live human operation-- a
stone age concept). At one point in the session Nick came over and inquired
about the DU signal on 729 (a prime frequency for all of us, with the reduction
in "Vancouver traffic"), but I needed to admit that my Ultralights weren't
exactly the optimal gear to filter the 730 splatter. As usual there were minor
weather challenges, with stiff wind late in the session rocking the Financial
Sinkhole Loops back and forth (and causing no lack of consternation in their
creator). Finally, although 738-Tahiti certainly has a reputation of being a
blowtorch on this cliff, this morning it was a blowtorch on steroids. Its
French language program at 1230 was so overwhelming that its splatter was
drowning the usual pest 740-KCBS, to the extent that the Frisco station was
struggling to be heard. Later today we welcome the first Japanese DXers to
participate in a Rockwork 4 DXpedition (or possibly, the first to participate
in a west coast MW-DXpedion?)-- Hiroo Nakagawa and Satoshi Miyauchi. Highly
skilled in both Perseus-SDR and Ultralight radio DXing, our two honored guests
will be participating in the ultimate wild DXing experience for the next couple
of sessions.

Better yet: do what I do - avoid PC based/powered SDR's... That tie you to

Re: [IRCA] First Rockworks impression

2016-07-09 Thread Chuck Hutton

   (a) for the common 19V charger input, connect a 12V and 6V battery in series
and use them as a "charger".

   (b) buy a "power bank" lithium battery with a 19V output (assuming 19V is
correct). Advantages: light, easily rechargable. Disadvantages: may generate
interference.

Hmmm, New Zealand you say. Why, yes, one or two. Both Tom and I
suffered minor disasters, but I think we've recorded a few bits of DX just
the same.

I know I heard Trackside on 549 and 828 plus Sport on 693, 774 and
792...but not 1503; conditions really favored the bottom of the band.
More listening to the NetSDR recordings will be required. I do like those
NZ parallels

Disasters? Tom seemed to have been fed a Windows 10 update that made his
Perseus mute; fortunately, there was a netbook available that had Perseus
software on it and was still functional. Thank you Windows 8. So we have
Perseus recordings through the peak of the opening.

For me, battery and external battery on my laptop died in the middle of the
opening, not long after we got Tom back into business. Also fortunately, a
spare laptop battery was available and was frantically installed,
accompanied by various bad words. I thought those batteries were all
charged up. Ahem.

Still two more days. Hope we have all the kinks ironed out now.

Re: [IRCA] 850 Minnesota

2016-07-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
What a great call-letter - WQRM. I wonder if they have a clue what QRM means
to ‘radio people?’

As one who has seen what FCC de-funding of inspections and enforcement have
done over the past 30 years I am never surprised when a station is called out
for ‘cheating’ but rarely dealt with by the FCC.
