[IRCA] TP 4 Sep Victoria version

2016-09-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Some low band Japanese thundered in for awhile, then after 1300UT,
quite a reasonable Aussie opening below 800kHz lasting about 1/2 hour.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR first made and appearance about 1300, and got powerful by
1320UT //594 etc. mostly talk; still in at 1338UT with weather
forecast "very hot", could be referring to signal quality.

747 JOIB man in Japanese //774 1240UT, within 10dB of 750 signal at times.
774 JOUB 1244UT man in Japanese, stronger than 770 when 770 took a fade

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK woman with strange voice in Japanese 1247UT, a play?
873 JOGB man in Japanese //774 1239UT
1287 JOHR man and woman in Japanese 1255UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

576 2RN jazz 1317UT; //585
594 3WV man talking 1337UT //612
828 JOBB man in Japanese //774 1257UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

540 4QL two men talking //612, lagging by a split second, 1317UT,
alone on channel; think this might be new at home

549 2CR traces of music in 550 splash, //612 1318UT
558 pop music 1318UT, man talking, sounded vaguely DU English (no,
not 6WA...checked the archive)

567 man talking DU English? 1324UT no parallel
585 7RN jazz 1316UT //576
774 3LO countryish music //612 1340UT
891 woman talking DU English? 1247UT
1116 woman mumbling 1340UT
1566 HLAZ Japanese program s/on "FEBC" recognizable, 1230UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

best wishes,

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 4 September 2016

2016-09-04 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Another interesting morning for DUs. Very similar to
yesterday, but a little bit better. This morning's audio, virtually all
Australian:

576 unIDBits of instrumental music at 1208
594 3WV Horsham Time pips, then very weak ABC news
fanfare at 1200.
612 4QR BrisbaneTalk by a man at 1157, //774.
Better, with talk by woman at 1221.
702 2BL Sydney Tough under CJLI splatter, but noted
woman speaking at 1228.
729 5RN AdelaidePresumed the one with end of musical
selection, then talk by woman at 1159.
774 3LO Melbourne Man talking at 1157.
792 4RN BrisbaneABC news by woman at 1202
828 3GI SaleFaint traces of talk at 1211
891 5AN AdelaideTalk by man at 1213, and noted ABC
news fanfare at 1230.
936 4PB BrisbaneMost likely the one with traces of
talk by a man at 1218.
1035Newstalk ZB Wellington Talk by a man. Seemed English,
so presumed New Zealand
1107unIDTraces of audio at 1219
11164BC BrisbaneProgram promo mentioning "Brisbane's
4BC" at 1218.
15484QD Emerald ABC news fanfare at 1200, then news
by woman

Like yesterday, quite a few other carriers close to audio, in particular
531, 585, 747, 846, 855, 1026, and 1512. The action was again mainly on
the lower end of the band, though the upper band had a bit more life
than yesterday.

I say up the limit to like 500k-1meg, tops. Would allow for long logs to be
posted but keep audio files off the list.

Re: [IRCA] File size limit

2016-09-04 Thread Rick Lewis
Chuck,
In the bad old days of mailing lists, even small files contained worms and
malware.
As a moderator, I remember getting nearly 300 rejected copies of one after
it inadvertently got on the list and low size limits were set so it would be
rejected.
Fortunately for us, antivirus programs and operating systems have gotten
smarter, and the bad guys are using different methods.
It's not much work for a moderator to approve larger messages.
It's also worth remembering that one person's joy is another's annoyance,
and lots of people don't appreciate getting large files they didn't solicit.

I can't say I like the idea of requiring someone 24 x 7 x 365 to manually
make the same decision that the list software should do automatically.

I don't know Colin. I'm on an awful lot of Mailman-hosted mail lists. I
admin a few myself. Under normal circumstances the admin gets an email
whenever a message is held up. He/she can then go in and moderate it
through or take any number of actions. Perhaps all that's needed is a more
active list admin who can use some judgement and moderate thru some oversize
messages?

May not be the total solution to what you're after but it's a start.

My 2 cents.

On lists where that is done, there is not an expectation of instantaneous
action by a moderator. Sometimes, even with multiple moderators, it can be
12-24 hours. That hasn't proven to be a problem on any of the lists where I
am a moderator.

I can't say I like the idea of requiring someone 24 x 7 x 365 to manually make
the same decision that the list software should do automatically.

I don’t know Colin. I’m on an awful lot of Mailman-hosted mail lists. I admin
a few myself. Under normal circumstances the admin gets an email whenever a
message is held up. He/she can then go in and moderate it through or take any
number of actions. Perhaps all that’s needed is a more active list admin who
can use some judgement and moderate thru some oversize messages?

May not be the total solution to what you’re after but it’s a start.

My 2 cents.

The file size limit is determined by the software. The use of the mailing list
software was donated to IRCA by member Risto Kotalampi(did I spell that right?
Sorry, I'm on the road right now) back in 2003. Risto has taken care of
upgrades. If there is a change to a setting needed, offhand I'd say contact him
about it. He also hosts the hard core dx group.

If it's the results of something you want posted just contact me and I can put
it on our server.

The actual system this email system runs on has long passed its best before
date -- not even sure that there have been any updates in years.

Being blunt: you are barking up the wrong tree if you expect any change to
happen anytime soon.

I manage a list exactly like this at UVic with over 1000 readers. I am
replacing it with MailChimp as we speak. All these ListServ systems are on
highly borrowed time.

silly 35 kb limit. Heck, is it not the 21st century? I would guess that
an tiny miniscule number of subscribers don't have access to decent
internet access. I second Chuck's observation! 73, Walt Salmaniw,

[IRCA] File Sharing

2016-09-04 Thread Michael Yule
Hi all - I sent Sylvain and Bill the clips they requested. Usually I store
these in Dropbox and then I can just copy and paste a link to them in the
email message. Since the file isn't there, just the link, there is no worry
about file size.

Kind regards,

Michael

[IRCA] TP 3 Sep Victoria version

2016-09-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A very Aussie morning as befits present geomagnetic conditions, yet a
couple of Asians too. There was probably some interesting DX
hiding, and not enough time to dig it out. Some of the loggings have
not been heard for quite some time.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR woman talking with man //549 1321UT; possibly a couple of
others peaked at this level, as fading was fairly unpredictable.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

576 2RN jazz clarinet //621 1306UT
702 2BL country music 1250UT //612
738 likely Tahiti, rhythmic pop 1211UT and other times
828 JOBB man in Japanese 1231UT
1575 VoA man in SE Asian language 1309UT, not much on hour though

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

774 3LO pips, fanfare, ABC news 1200UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 laid back pop music 1208UT, strong carrier
549 2CR woman talking, sneaking through 550 splash, //612 and lagging
about 1/2 second, 1320UT
558 brief bit of choral music 1315UT, but didn't really sound
islandish? Assumed Fiji but now not so sure.

567 woman talking DU English? 1207UT
585 7RN ABC fanfare 1300UT, maybe someone else there also? Had
grabbed parallel with 576 a few minutes earlier, but 7RN lagging 2RN
by over a second.

594 3WV instrumental music //612, 702
621 3RN jazz guitar //576 1305UT
747 4QS country pop //612 1339UT
792 4RN joining the jazzy throng 1308UT //576
828 3GI instrumental music //702 1314UT
1053 Korean jammer 1210UT
891 5AN weak ABC fanfare 1330UT
1116 pop music presumed to be 4BC 1331UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

 603 765 855 882 1098

best wishes,

Nick
