[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 10 November 2016

2016-11-10 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A bit of an odd morning. Had Asians in early, but rather hit or
miss. 774 had a good signal, yet 693 was only a so-so carrier. Later
on the top part of the band did better, with several X-banders near
audio, though only 1701 made it. Even that was a bit unusual, in that
the Melbourne station predominated, rather than the usual Brisvaani from
Brisbane.

594JOAKTokyo, JAPANMan and woman talking in Japanese
at 1127.

747JOIBSapporo, JAPAN Man in Japanese at 1128, // much
stronger 774.

774JOUBAkita, JAPANGood level at 1126 with "Oh Happy Day"
sung by a group, then man spoke in Japanese.

11164BC Brisbane, AUSTRALIA Aussie-accented man talking
at 1410.

1701.02 Islamic Voice RadioMelbourne, AUSTRALIA

Think in terms of parallels. If it is the usual SER suspect, there will be
other SER channels to try for a parallel.

Re: [IRCA] QSL received

Nice Jim. I grew up in Lansing and remember the Grand Rapids stations. My old
log from 30+ years ago shows 1340 was WLAV. Glad to see they're sending out
QSLs. I might write for one next time I'm back visiting.

Keep reporting the QSLs. We don't see too many anymore.

[IRCA] Propagation favoring Latin America

2016-11-10 Thread Richard N Allen
Apparently the promised CME is having an affect on reception this evening
(morning GMT). There is either a Mexican or Cuban station on nearly every
frequency. Usually heard WGN-720 was covered by "El Fonografo", XEJCC until it
closed down just at 0300. Now I'm hearing YNRC on the frequency. WSCR was
totally covered by Radio Rebelde.

[IRCA] Update on Noise Level and other things

2016-11-10 Thread Patrick Martin
I remembered I had the two chokes that I built years ago at the suggestion of
John Bryant. I re-installed one at the antenna input and my noise dropped by
80% on the R8. The Eastern Beverage is now working pretty well. At Noon today,
I am getting KBOI & KSL fairly well. There is still some noise, but nothing
like there was. Of course the Beverage does null the noise running East.
Interesting, off the back end (West) JOUB 774 was armchair copy last night.
XERF 1570 was also good. Now to get the SW EWE back up and see what I can do
with that. But it was pretty much destroyed, but at least have the line from
the ground to the branch, so I do not need to climb the tree again.

As many of you know, I have been an avid QSLer now for over 50 years. The
change in the QSLing over the past decade has not been to my liking, but I see
more prepared cards are forthcoming in the QSL World, so maybe even though I am
not a fan of them, I may have to embrace them more, as I do miss QSLing. I have
not given up the hobby, as some have asked! I never will, but I have been
heavily into in FM DXing, not being able to do much on MW.

I do plan to attend the Reno convention, even though in August. I will take
the weekend off to fly down if I can. The club is very important to me as I
have been a member since 1968. We have a great group of friends and
unfortunately, we are all aging. I'll be 68 in March, but I want to be able to
visit with friends, while we are able to.

Note: this is my first report in the Standard Time season, so conversion
instruxions have changed:

All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT` during EST; when
changing times one must also change the dates for events in the 00-05 UT period
to the previous date by ELT].

Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S
inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; IC-R75
with E-W longwire

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes, utility, ham, which may be found in several archives
without much delay, such as

** OKLAHOMA. UT Monday Nov 7 at 0145:15 UT, my computer and video screens in
front of me start shaking for a few seconds; earthquake! Soon revealed as
centred slightly west of Cushing, USGS rating 5.0 at 0144:24 UT; so it took
almost a minute to reach here? Some reports near the epicenter said it lasted
up to a sesquiminute, and there was a lot of damage especially to old buildings
in Cushing. OKC TV stations rushed in to cover it; KWTV and KFOR were both
running late, due to stupid ballgame overruns on their networks, their full
newscasts not starting until 0450 UT and 0500 UT respectively. This allowed
KOCO and KOKH to get the jump on them from 0400 UT, even 0300 UT, respectively.
As usual, too little too late, the oil-controlled Republican Okie government
may ban a few more fracking/injexion wells around areas already devastated by
quakes.

1600, Nov 7 at 1317 UT I start listening to Cushing`s only radio station, KUSH
(not even an FM translator there, per WTFDA DB), during the usual W&W morning
chat show, where of course this is the topic of the day; but skywave QRM from
Vietnamese KRVA The Metroplex is still heavy making a slow SAH of 28/minute =
0.47 Hz. Anyhow, KUSH survived the shakeup. Here`s KUSH website for its own
latest news, streaming:
http://1600kush.com/wp/
It`s OK here on groundwave after skywave fades out (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1600, Nov 7 circa 2000 UT on caradio, KUSH Cushing with network
news and talk shows, nothing local about the quake (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

===

** U S A. 860, Nov 7 at 1325 UT, KKOW Pittsburg KS concluding ``Full Moon
Polka`` part of daily Polka Time segment combined with birthday wishes (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1540, Nov 7 at 1315 UT, ESPN-Deportes promos, i.e. KZMP University
Park (Metroplex) TX, 32 kW day power since 1300 UT (December: 1330 UT) but
losing out to KXEL. Altho in Spanish, the abbr. ESPN is always pronounced in
English to avoid sexual embarrassment. They`re stuck with the brand, altho its
original meaning has long been surpassed in both languages (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST) However:

1540, KZMP, University Park, TX was Spanish sports, now Mexican, slogan "La
Ranchera 106.7" IRCA DX Monitor (via Nov NZ DX Times via DXLD)

UNdated info, so is that correct? If so, what was the ESPN-D station I was
hearing on 1540? No others are listed in the 2016-2017 NRC AM Log as of August
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. 1220, Nov 8 at 0121 UT, unusual to hear Spanish here,
looping E-W, or slightly clockwise from that. Spirited dialog in colloquial
Spanish I can hardly comprehend, but one guy is very excited and yelling as if
covering a game, mentions ``canasta``, so maybe it`s basketball. Bearing rules
out Mexico, but does refer to ``República Mexicana`` so maybe originating
there. By nulling this I can also hear a real Mexican on 1220, XEB from the
south, since it`s a second ahead of // fellow IMER outlet 1570 XERF. UnID has
been dominant for a while, but losing out to CCI by 0130 UT.

Now searching for US SS stations on 1220 in NRC AM Log 2016-2017: Unless there
has been a recent format flip from something else, WAYE Birmingham AL, 1000/73
U1 looks like best bet, ``La Jefa``. There are others in CA, FL, IL, NC (2),
all of which are too far, off-azimuth, or wrong format such as religious. At
least perpetual cheater WSLM in Indiana is not being heard now (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn: Little 250w KTMZ in Pomona does indeed have a HispaniSports format (ESPN
Deportes), but I would never bet on it being them, as their signal rarely even
makes it to L.A or San

[IRCA] Murray Harbour North PEI Report # 3

2016-11-10 Thread Walter Salmaniw
After a disappointing afternoon and evening of the 8th November, static
levels dropped on the 9th producing a huge number of MW loggings, many of
which were lower power UK stations. A great deal of fun, going from
frequency to frequency, IDing each one, only to find another station or two
on the same channel fading in. Here's my list up to 09:00 this morning the
10th Nov 2016. Nick moved his DKAZ to 30 degrees and shortened somewhat to
140 feet or so, with the intention of nulling some of the static on the
backside. Well it worked fine for me! 73, Walt Salmaniw

677 LIBYA Benghazi 100 kW Libya Al Wataniya, Nov 9 0204 - Thanks to
Wolfgang Bueschel for the reminder about Libya. Yes, we have been hearing
them. Tonight on measured 677.496 at good/very good level but with
significant static crashes tonight. We also see 1053.1 mixing with a UK
station. I note that the MW List gives a schedule of 05 - 23:50. Perhaps
on late for the US elections ;-). (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

756 UNITED KINGDOM Carlisle 1 kW BBC Radio Cumbria, Nov 10 0900 - Fair
reception with ID, although some static crashed right on the 'Cumbria'
part. Mentioned a traffic line at 0345 305 3939. A quick Google search
confirms this to be the Traffic line for BBC Radio Cumbria.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

810 SCOTLAND BBC Radio Scotland, Nov 10 0900 - 810 MW mentioned followed by
BBC Radio Scotland ID. Good reception. Into news. 3 transmitters listed
here. 2 at 100 kW at Burghead and Westerglen, and a 5 kW sender at
Aberdeen. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

846 NORTHERN IRELAND Redcastle 1 kW Radio North, Nov 9 1909 - Weak, but in
the clear playing C&W music. Parallel to their internet stream at
http://www.radionorth.net/ Ads at 19:23. Rechecked at 09:00, and much
better with Insight for Living (a US based Gospel program). Quite a lot of
splatter, though. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

855 UNITED KINGDOM unid BBC, Nov 10 0900 - Not an easy channel. Cochannel
RNE Spain, but able to make out British accented announcer with BBC Radio
ID, but not until :28 sec past the TOH. 2 BBC channels listed. BBC Radio
Lancashire and BBC Radio Norfolk, both with 1 kW. At 09:02 the BBC
dominated over RNE. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

864 EGYPT Santah 500 kW ERTU Al-Quran al-Karim, Nov 9 1935 - Non-stop Quran
recitations across the BOH, so presumed not Iran. Very strong. Just a
hint of cochannels. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

882 WALES Washford 100 kW BBC Radio Wales, Nov 9 1936 - Very strong with
sports news. COPE is audible cochannel, but weaker. Static crashes more
manageable today compared to yesterday! Rechecked at 09:00 with time check
for 09:00. No time pips or ID at TOH, but local Wales programming
including weather and road conditions. Full ID into news only at 09:01:30.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

891 HOLLAND Hulsberg 22 kW Radio Patrium ?, Nov 9 1952 - Looped
announcement noted, including in English. Realized it had to be Holland,
but also cochannel impassioned talk ongoing. By 20:00 had faded back to
the Dutch loop. Listening to the UTwente SDR, sounds like they're saying,
'This is Radio Patrium'... When rechecked at 20:14, much stronger again,
but so is the cochannel at times. Who can it be?. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour
PEI)

900 CUBA San German-Urbano Noris Radio Progreso, Nov 10 0900 - Fair to good
reception with ID. I can hear the same under CBC on 600 kHz. Off the back
end of our DKAZ, so an incidental logging!. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

900 ITALY Milano 50 kW RAI Radio 1, Nov 9 2020 - Strong reception with
usual animated Italian. Only a hint of domestics at this time.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

918 SLOVENIJA Ljubljana 50 kW Radio Slovenija 1, Nov 9 2026 - Very strong
reception of RS 1. EZL talk. I see that they list English at 21:30. I'll
have to see if that happens! Checked back at 21:30. Before was a lovely
rendition from Zemphir. English started about 30 seconds late, but good
reception, although cochannel now with Radio Inter, 50 kW from Madrid.
Still, Slovenia dominates. Also a het from the Nigerian on 917. Weather
at 21:35, with highs between 3 and 8 deg C. Into German. (Salmaniw,Murray
Harbour PEI)

1026 NORTHERN IRELAND Belfast 1.7 kW Downtown Radio, Nov 9 2056 - Matches
the website, but the feed is down. C&W music. Program now is Downtown
Country with Big T. Fits. Cochannels present which come and go,
especially SER. Earlier, I could hear another English speaker, so either
BBC Radio Jersey or BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1026 NORTHERN IRELAND Belfast 1.7 kW Downtown Radio, Nov 10 0900 - Local
ads before the TOH including for Belfast International Airport. Downtown
Radio ID at the TOH, and into news. 09:00 TC. Irish accented male.
Northern Ireland air ambulance service announced. Good reception at times.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1035 UNITED KINGDOM Aberdeen or Symington Northsound Two, or West Sound AM,
Nov 9 2113 - Looks like

2016-11-10 Thread d1028gary
Asian propagation was similar to yesterday's, with a few TP regulars managing
weak audio at peak sunrise enhancement. Mostly it was a Korean show, with
972-HLCA the strongest of the bunch reaching brief good peaks from 1320-1330.
603-HLSA was at a steady poor to fair level from 1330-1350, while 657-Pyongyang
was barely audible around 1345. 738 also had weak audio from the Asian
direction but couldn't stick around for more than a few seconds at a time. In a
somewhat bizarre pattern 747-JOIB managed brief fair audio in Portland splatter
from 1340-1355 while none of the other Japanese even registered a carrier.
Unlike Steve I had no audio from 1566-HLAZ but did get a weak carrier off and
on throughout the session. Overall it was another lackluster morning, typical
of Asian propagation during the last two weeks.
