I can't really add much to the sentiments so far expressed about Paul. It
was always a pleasure to meet him again at the conventions; he was an
interesting man as well as a great asset to the hobby.

best wishes,

[IRCA] TP for 22 Sept, Victoria version

2017-09-22 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
As Dennis and Nigel mentioned, best Asian morning of the season, meaning
that I was finally hearing some second tier Japanese
stationsimprovement as sunrise approached, and little sign of DUs

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at
least briefly):

774 JOUB English lessons 1311UT
828 JOBB English lessons 1312UT
972 HLCA man and woman in Korean 1320UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by
a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man and woman in Japanese 1310UT
747 JOIB English lessons 1314UT
1242 JOLF man in Japanese 1346UT; not as strong by 1400UT, but distinctive
cuckoo pips still recognizable
1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese 1322UT, another woman agreeing

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise
could be understood by a native speaker:

693 JOAB English lessons 1313UT facing off the 690 splatter
954 JOKR assumed, two men in Japanese 1352UT
1287 JOHR assumed with woman and man in Japanese 1345UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at
by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

558 HLQH man talking //603 1328UT;
567 JOIK man and woman /594 1313UT
603 HLSA definite ID with distinctive chimes and pips 1300UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or

Results here were in line with what Dennis described - the best
Asian morning of the season. Mind you, the bar had been set pretty low
here. The Aussies did make a late appearance as well, so an interesting
morning all around.

747	JOIB Sapporo, JAPAN Good with man and woman presenting English
lesson at 1250

774 JOUBAkita, JAPAN//747 with English lesson at 1251.
Good level.

792	4RN Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	Fair to good with end of ABC news, then
into a BBC arts program

972 HLCADangjin, KOREA,S. Good, with man speaking in Korean at
1252

1026	4MK	Mackay, AUSTRALIA	Poor-fair with Bee Gees song at 1316.
Confirmed as being currently played on web site.

1098V7AB, MARSHALL ISLANDS
Not as good as yesterday, but again noted at 1058 with island-style
music, and news in English at the hour.

Paul S. was a good guy. WE didn't always see eye to eye on how i handled
things, but he was pretty even keeled in handling it. .and he'd worked in
broadcasting way back when... one of the few DX'ers who had, so he
understood the hobby more then some I think

get some audio on 1206 here in Victoria, and there may be snippets on 1242

course...is there interference down there for you?

Details later when time allows.

2017-09-22 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Hey Stan, I heard WWSM to the other day

Between about 615-645pm Wednesday September 20th, I had a few catches.

Distances between me and the station was about 175 miles.

I've heard WWSM 1510 Annville-Cleona-Palmyra, PA at sunset a few times, but
it's usually a mushy jumble of WLAC, WRNJ and WWSM. But last night, it was
quite clear at times with classic country music and the Westwood One Real
Country Network DJ, but missing station liners:

Here are two clips:

[IRCA] S. AZ TPs Sept 22

2017-09-22 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
Poor conditions this morning with only a couple with audio except for
1566 HLAZ which rose to good levels several times. Lots of low and mid
band hets but not quite to audio levels. No expanded band hets today.
1098 het poor today. And the "mystery station" of 1566 is all cleared up
thanks to help of Gary DeBock, Chris Kadlec and Colin Newell. No mystery
at all, just HLAZ playing various programs being broadcast in Japanese
to Japan, along with the occasional fadeup of the Chinese Yanbian
station wih its "soft jamming" to try to keep HLAZ from being received
in China.

594 Japan with pips and chime at 1300 TOH, no other audio heard, very poor

747 Japan very poor 1236 utc

774 Japan very poor 1250 utc

972 S Korea very poor 1228 utc

1566 S Korea very poor/poor 1232 utc; poor /weak at 1310 and 1318 utc,
good for sync det lock briefly. HLAZ had a woman talking, then another
station faded up with man talking, mixing with HLAZ, presumed the
Chinese Yanbian station at 1320 utc. Eventually HLAZ was once again in
the clear with the Chinese station gone. HLAZ was still audible at 1330 utc.

Heard another new station on my old vertical antenna last night:

2300 UTC - 1510 kHz - WWSM in Annville-Cleona, PA  - 5 kW - country
music followed by local eastern Pennsylvania news after the top of the hour

By the way, yesterday, I mentioned that I got "my 35-year-old Hy-Gain
