[IRCA] Good conditions to the east

2017-10-04 Thread Nigel Pimblett

The east hasn't been favoured here this season, but this is likely
the best night thus far to the east from here in southern Alberta.
Toronto is doing pretty well on 740, "Uptown 1010 (WAUK) is on top on
1010, and WMVP is atop 1000, all for the first time this season.

[IRCA] Ready to DX very soon in the Finnish Lapland?

2017-10-04 Thread Mika Makelainen
Here's a unique once-in-a-lifetime offer to foreign AM DXers. Are you
interested in DXing in the Arctic DX paradise of Aihkiniemi in the
Finnish Lapland with some local help? Can you leave for a week of DXing
at a short notice?

If so, read on. DXing in an entirely new location can be very
challenging, because it is difficult to know what antennas to use (we
have 13 1-km-long Beverage antennas), when to listen to which directions
and how to interprete the changing propagation conditions. Learning it
all is sooo much easier if you go there with someone who is already
experienced in the Arctic conditions.

Now there is a possibility that one of you could join me for a week in
Aihkiniemi from October 28 to November 4. I would be able to personally
guide you to the secrets of Arctic DXing, and I can promise you an
unforgettable DXing experience, whatever the space weather happens to be.

I'm one of the founding members of Aihkiniemi, which was built in 2010.
This is the first time in these seven years that anyone of us is making
an offer like this, although the cabin is and has been open to foreign
DXers to rent and to explore the AM band on their own, and many have
taken advantage of that opportunity.

Here's the thing. I'm going to Aihkiniemi already on October 21 for two
weeks of intensive AM DXing. Fellow DXer Jim Solatie will join me, but
it looks like he needs to leave before the first week is over. In that
case there would be room for another DXer for one week. I will be
traveling back to southern Finland on November 4, arriving by train in
Helsinki in the morning of November 5, so that's when the fun will be
over. These dates are fixed.

So how much would it cost? You would be paying:
- half of the weekly cabin fee (250 out of 500 euros) plus expenses when
we go for shower in nearby premises

- half of our return trip costs by car and rail from Aihkiniemi to Helsinki
- your own groceries, meals and other personal expenses
- your travel to and from Finland, naturally ;)

What kind of a place is it? You can find out everything here:
http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aihkiniemi_dx_cabin_for_rent.dx

Aihkiniemi has the antennas, but you would need to bring your own
receiver(s), hard drive(s), earphones, an antenna splitter and the
necessary cables, all-weather clothing, bedsheets and other personal items.

Consider seizing the opportunity if you:
- already have several years of AM DXing experience
- are healthy and fit enough to walk for miles in the Arctic terrain,
checking the antennas
- don't have a major snoring problem (the cabin is small and we are
sharing one bedroom)

- are flexible and fast in making your travel arrangements
- your equipment don't cause RFI (electrical interference)

You would need to fly to Inari/Ivalo in Finland or to Kirkenes in Norway
on October 28. I would pick you up at the airport, and after the
DXpedition, you would be departing from Helsinki on or after November 5.

If this sounds great, then please be in touch with me, and depending on
how many interested DXers there are, you could be the lucky one. Don't
make any firm plans or reservations before a confirmation from me.

I just returned from my previous DXpedition to Aihkiniemi last weekend,
and here's my report: http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aih72rep.htm

- might be useful to know what to expect. I need to point out that I
already have thousands of verified AM stations from both east and west
so that if you have less, you can count on getting numerous new stations
no matter what the propagation conditions will be. Expect the
temperatures to range from +10 C to -15 C.

DXing in Lapland has never been as easy as this. Interested? :)

I'm not following these mailing lists regularly, so email me directly
(and not on mailing lists) to express interest or to ask questions.

(Don't share this publicly, but you can share this info with a limited
circle of fellow DXers in your country/club.)

TPs from Japan predominated though--the usual, main NHK stations but also
weaker outlets like presumed JOQG Yamada on 1323 rising to a fair-good
level at 1406.

The view from the cliff as starlight gave way to a cloudless, sunny sky at
sunrise was just a prelude to today's 70-degree weather on the northern
Oregon coast.

Note to KAZ and Tim Tromp--I also saw the 60 Hz spike above 1098 kHz this
morning, but there was nothing below 1098. Perhaps if I had been recording
WAV files earlier I would have seen the pair of 60 Hz tones.

I listened from 1117 to 1255. A het was all I could muster from 1098 this
morning. I think audio was close for a minute, but ultimately couldn't quite
get there. DU hets were also heard on 774, 1116 and 1611. Asian hets were heard
on 594, 693, 747, 828, 1008 and 1566. The only audio present was weak audio
from JOUB, 774.

[IRCA] S. AZ TP/DU, Oct 4

2017-10-04 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
Lots of hets over low/mid band today; 1566 HLAZ again with a number of
good-level fadeups. I've discovered that the Japan NHK network stations
play 3 pips and a longer chime at top of hour. The pips are a lower
pitched "A" note with the chime the same A note played an octave above
(the chime is the A above middle C on a piano). The chime fades away in
several seconds. Since I don't receive TPs very well here, I amuse
myself looking for the TOH chime in my recording--often the chime is
heard with nothing else. And the chime is often heard with nothing from
the lower-pitched pips. (South Korea also plays the same pips and chime,
even the same pitch--you'd think maybe they'd use a different pitch!),
but the chime is cut off and doesn't fade away, and a short orchestra
jingle follows the chime--so with careful listening South Korea can be
told from Japan just from the chime.) Today I heard a station on 558
with 1300 TOH chime, except the chime wasn't at the A note but at the C
note (above middle C on the piano). So I wonder which station this might be.

558 unknown, 1257 very poor talk;  TOH (1300 utc) chime at "C" note, not
usual "A" note for JJ stations, very poor

567 Japan 1300 pips and chime then talk

594 Japan very poor talk 1240

666 Japan very poor/poor talk 1317

729 Japan 1300 chime

774 Japan 1300 pips and chime then talk very poor; 1319 very poor/poor talk

828 Japan 1300 chime

846 Japan 1300 chime faint

873 Japan 1300 pips and chime; 1320 very poor/poor talk

891 Japan  1241 very poor/ poor talk; 1300 pips and chime; 1331 talk

972 S Korea 1300 chime faint

1143 Japan 1302 very poor talk

1197 Japan 1300 chime (not a network station)

1314 Japan 1248 very poor talk; 1257 talk very poor; 1300 chime then
talk. (Not a network station)

1566 S Korea HLAZ, a number of good fadeups for sync detector
lock--1232, 1240, 1242, 1307, 1313, 1319, 1323, 1327, fading out after 1344

1611 Australia brief fadeup with man talking and music very poor
1306-1309 utc, very poor. The DKAZ is much superior to the 900' E/W
longwire for this--nothing at all on the longwire.

Both 60 Hz spikes around 1098 carrier here in IL again this morning. This
is something I hadn't notice until a week or so ago. I guess somehow the OC
is picking up 60 Hz hum.

I wonder if V7AB is now putting out their full 25 kW? Seems stronger than
last season to me.

The strength of V7AB lets me know the Hawaii would be reasonably easy if
one of their reasonably strong stations drifted a few KHz off freq for a
while. But this hasn't happened to my knowledge during the 45 years I've
seriously been in this hobby. 73 KAZ 35 miles NW of Chicago

[IRCA] UNID 1080 Mexican is XETUL Tultitlan Mexico!!

2017-10-04 Thread Robert Ross

I listened to my recording a few more times and did some Digging on the Net and
found a Posting from my Pal SAUL CHERNOS of Toronto that IDs this station for
me!!!

I listened to the 2nd Anthem on my recording and it is NOT The OAXACA
Anthem…..even though they sound quite similar.

So….what I heard this morning is 1080 XETUL Radio Mexiquense Tultitlan, MEXICO.

I'm glad I did more detective work on this and Found Saul's Earlier
Posting……..Cleared this up immediately!!

** MEXICO. 1080 unID Mexico - mystery second anthem --- Have a clip
from 1080 at 0659 EST [1159 UT] from Dec 22. I know it's from Mexico
because I was working my way up the dial checking for anthems which I
believe run at 0600 local time in Mexico (as well as local time).
What's striking is there's a second piece of military march style
music immediately afterwards, and I think it's the same station as one
ends, there's a second of silence, and the next one begins. My hunch
is the second anthem is a state anthem from Mexico, or perhaps (less
likely IMO) even a municipality or perhaps even a second national
musical score. I've cut the Mexican anthem to the last bit - enough to
make it identifiable as an anthem. About 8-10 seconds in is the start
of what I believe is the second anthem. A second clip has some talk I
heard, with rooster crowing, moments after the second anthem ended.

Any ideas on this one? It's my first ever from Mexico here on 1080!

You have, without a doubt, XETUL-AM Tultitlán Edomex, barely not in

Re: [IRCA] V7AB 1098 OC with 60 Hz hum!

2017-10-04 Thread Neil Kazaross
KATK IDed yesterday 1152.:The station you can leave on all day for
America's Best Music, KATK 740 The ??? (certainly didn't say The Hippo and
this seems a slight format change from oldies).

Today in passing KONA 610 good, CKST clobbering WHO. Regular DU's only
at maybe bare audio levels. I expect I will be quite happy with my 1200
recording for domestics.

Do you think Star 657 is undermodulated compared to some? With WSCR IBOC
off a few days ago, carrier was constant SAM lock and often 30 dB above the
noise floor. A clear 10 dB more than need for some non slopped DU audio,
but I could only barely tell the soft mx was Christian.

[IRCA] UNID Mexican on 1080 Khz…..Possible XEAX Oaxaca??

2017-10-04 Thread Robert Ross
>From the 0700 EDT ELAD Recording today……..Didn't hear any call letters to ID
>this….but this is what I think it is……

Has anyone heard this station or know if they play BOTH the Mexican and Oaxaca
Anthems???

***
1080 XEAX Radio Formula (PRESUMED) Oaxaca, MEXICO Oct/04/17 0659 EDT SS
FAIR
NO ID heard on this one….but it all seems to fit both the Format and the Local
State Anthem.
Female with EE Pop/Rock Music @ 0659-0702 EDT. Into Mexican Anthem with Vocals
@
0702-03. Then into the Oaxaca STATE Anthem with Vocals @ 0703-05 EDT.
I checked the Oaxaca State Anthem online and it matches up. Faded after Anthem
so no Talk or Calls
heard.

Does anyone receive this station with enough regularity to confirm they play
the Oaxaca State
Anthem after the Mexican Anthem???

UNID for now…..But looks like it could be them.

ROSS, ON.

[IRCA] Morning commute 4-Oct-17 -- opening to the West

2017-10-04 Thread Mark Pettifor
A few times a year, when I'm tuning around on the car radio, there will
be a good opening to the West. This was one of those mornings. Here's
what I had time to hear (about a 25-minute commute):

850 KOA Denver CO - 1130 UTC
ID at BOH then news; fairly common when my commute is around local
sunrise

940 CJGX Yorkton SK - 1133 UTC
Local news, talk of a stadium being demolished, then ID of "GX94", then
into country music, faded quickly after that. New log I think!

1070 KNX Los Angeles CA - 1137-1141 UTC
no call sign ID hrd buts lots of local ads: financial seminar(s) in
Laguna Beach and Pasedena; jewelry ad for the Jewelry Exchange in Tustin
w/phone number 714-something; counseling ad; hrd Los Angeles several
times.

1160 KSL Salt Lake City UT - 1131 UTC
IDs at BOH then news; not as common as KOA but also hrd when my commute
is during local sunrise.

Wish I had time to just pull over and DX on days like this!
