Re: [IRCA] Kona, Hawaii Ultralight TP's for 12-20

2017-12-20 Thread Gary DeBock
Yes Mark,

I'm sure that when East Coast DXers visit Newfoundland for the first time they
go through a similar crash course in sorting out a huge bonanza of exotic TA
signals. Hawaii more than qualifies as the west coast version of Newfoundland!

Having exotic TP mixes day after day on most of the 9 kHz split frequencies is
a bizarre experience. I occasionally experienced some exceptional TP
propagation at Grayland during the 2008-2009 period, but this is in an entirely
different league. It reminds me of when I was a teenager living in Japan from
1967-69, hearing China, Japan and Korea in wild snarls all across the MW band
every night.

Drastic UPTICK here in Victoria at sunrise.

I have a YOUTUBE video to upload -- but for an example - 1098 khz had an
ear shattering Chinese station instead of an open carrier from the
Marshalls.

Korea and Japan had plasma cutting, blistering, front end melting signals
on 594, 747, 774, 828 and 972.

I place the blame squarely on Gary DeBocks presence in Kona
His TSA friendly antenna is acting as a mid-ocean signal booster.

Video to follow.

[IRCA] Kona, Hawaii Ultralight TP's for 12-20

2017-12-20 Thread Gary DeBock
The Pacific island DU's ran up the white flag tonight, pretty much getting
buried by a third straight night of overwhelming signals from Japan, Korea and
China from 0830-1000. The usual exotics on 540, 558, 621 and 1440 were wimpy
indeed before the east Asian sunset, and missing in action thereafter.

North Korea started the show around 0830 with another blowtorch signal on 819,
followed by a slew of potent NK stations on 621 (confusing because it was the
Japanese service, playing typical NK music), 657, 801 and 855. Obscure Japanese
stations on 603 and 675 sounded like NHK1 big guns, while the real NHK1 big
guns on 666 and 729 sounded like blowtorches.

Chinese stations once again hit their stride by 0930, seeming to show up all
over the band on obscure frequencies. The real Chinese powerhouses on 981 and
1593 were almost at science fiction level, such as this 981-CNR1 signal at 0955
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/q6cnm0x8ojocsecu3rfnt5r9lvwn4n00

On 1053 an S9 signal from JOAR became an S9 signal from China, all within about
2 minutes https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/yn8t79rvdm1rqdfwy42t6euz88poj0e8

The only way to keep track of these Asian TP onslaughts in to record like mad,
and try to sort out the details later. It's kind of like having exceptional
west coast TP propagation every day, which continues until you are hopelessly
swamped with strange recordings.

2017-12-20 Thread Gary DeBock
Hi Chris,

I'm happy that the 819 recording brought back some pleasant (?) memories.

The strength and variety of the Pyongyang stations here in Kona is pretty
astonishing, with 621, 657, 801, 819 and 855 all showing up at potent strength
tonight. Even the 621 Japanese service at 0950 UTC was pounding in.

As for your offer to type up a list of the audio stream links for the major
East Asian networks, I'm sure that it would prove to be most helpful. A lot of
DXers rarely hear these stations, and may not be familiar with the parallel
frequencies to make sure of the identity of what they heard.

One other station you may remember is 981-CNR1 in Beijing, which was doing its
best to melt down my Ultralight's front end tonight at 0955 UTC

Great recording, Gary. I am actually familiar with that tune, believe it or
not. Though I must admit, most of them do sound pretty similar. I'm still
holding onto a few unposted clips of DPRK TV network audio recorded on their FM
audio frequencies, which I should get around to eventually.

As for everyone else, I often notice that a lot of those East Asian signals are
assumed, presumed, or whatever even with audio heard. I'm wondering if people
would find it helpful if I typed up a brief list of all the audio streams for
all the big often-heard networks in that area. I'm sure that everyone has the
stream for HLAZ at the very least, and all of the other big ones that are
reported?

Subject: [IRCA] Kona, Hawaii Ultralight DU's for 12-19

The Asians once again slammed the Pacific island DU's with huge signals from
0830-1030, so apparently this is the usual Kona propagation pattern for
December. Japan, Korea and China were all well represented, with several wild
and wacky S9+ signals from the likes of 819-Pyongyang, 981-CNR1 and 1440-JOWF.
846 and 1440-Kiribati have delayed their sign off until 1014 the last couple of
days, so this may be a new programming change. 1440-Kiribati's sign off was
particularly interesting tonight, with JOWF doing its best to hold down the
frequency. 621-Tuvalu's garbled audio has become a chronic issue, and no longer
seems to be intermittent. Unlike April both of these DU's have trouble holding
down their frequencies, and around 1000 Tuvalu's garbled audio was so weak that
three different TP's (NHK1, Pyongyang and China) were running all over it, TP
mixes were all over the band, with Japan, North Korea and China fighting it
out. Recordings have been made of all these mixes but there
's no time currently to write up a detailed report and post them. The full
report will need to wait until return to Puyallup, I'm afraid. In any case I'll
post this one wacky recording of 819-Pyongyang KCBS at 1035 tonight (dedicated
to Chris Kadlec), with bizarre female doo-wop music loud enough to wake up the
dead https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/xd18go0080a8xgnku4fcwf3ug2mcaws0
