[IRCA] TP 8 Feb Victoria version

2018-02-08 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A continuing general lack of excitement, only audio beyond the
regulars was on 1098, maybe Chinese, still unidentified. Still,
perhaps a touch better than yesterday?

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

972 HLCA emotional male vocal briefly peaking at 1512UT, after man in
Korean a little earlier, and somewhat weaker

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

828 JOBB man in Portuguese 1443UT //774
1566 HLAZ female vocal 1529UT, man in Chinese

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1593 CNR1 man in Chinese 1526UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 JOAK, never much more than mumbling on this one, but pips crept
through at 1500UT

693 JOAB man talking //774 1452UT
774 JOUB never amounting to much, noted //828 1442UT and to 693 noted above
1098 man talking, Chinese intonation 1545UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)
 747 1098 1116 1134 1242 1278 1314 1323 1359 1386 1422 1458
1557  seemed to be Asian;

   1017 1098 1548 seemed to be DU

I was a casual BCB DXer from 1961 (age 8) to 1966 (age 13) with a pocket
transistor, but really became hooked from 1967-69 as a teenager living in
Iwakuni, Japan. There were lots of interesting stations that no longer exist
(AFVN-Armed Forces Vietnam Network, KSBK (?) in Okinawa, and my local 1580-FEN
(Far East Network, in Iwakuni). In 1971 I joined the Navy, and chased MW-DX on
portables like the Sony TR-6400 around the world (Mayport, FL, Pearl Harbor, HI
and Yokosuka, Japan).

I started with MW DX and SWBC DX in about 1972. Then Utility DX in 1974 for a
couple years. Even a little FM DX in the mid-70's. Not much SWBC DX since
moving to CA in 1984. Now I split my time between MW DX and Utility DX and
occasionally listen for 10 meter ham beacons.

I started in 1962 , as I knew nothing about it, picking up my first radio off a
garbage rack on my way home from school. I was 13. My mother would not let me
plug it in until my father got home. We plugged it in and i turned it on,
catching the Anchorage AK stations from Seward (KENI-550, KHAR-590, KFQD-730,
and KBYR-1270), plus our local at the time, KIBH-1340 (250w). The radio was a
Zenith that had a fold down cover, a smaller version of the Oceanic. It was
sensitive as all Zenith's were. Heard WA/OR/CA stations after dark. Later on
about 1965 I started to hear some SW and even FM. I guess I started with MW,
rather than SW. My first QSL'd from Feb 65 were KFBK 1530 and KPAY 1060.

I started dx'ing when I was 11yrs.old in 1963 using an old hallicrafters
s-38e. began with sw and recall getting my first qsl from HCJB "voice of the
andes". Did not find
Sw very interesting due to being overshadowed by my big bro. and his buddy
who still lives down the street and still dx's! they dx'd in the late '50's
when MW was quiet with
Relatively few stations. i logged about a 100 stations, notably kfi, and
ksl. Also a couple of 1kw stations in the west. By 1966 I discovered girls
and the radio, now a knight r-100a went silent. Sold it for a 1968 sony
8-track recorder. I did not return to the hobby until I built my house in
2006. Bought a drake r8a and started dx'ing once more. My Logs are ho-hum
mainly due to my lazy attitude. Still love the hobby especially in the
summer, dreaming of the upcoming dx season. But something always gets
in the way! I have 1st class equip. but there is no substitute for time at
the dials!! My current shack is surrounded by glass and I can see WANB-1210
out my window.

I entered a contest in Jr High to see how far I could hear on the AM band. The
fellow running the contest informed me that I could write stations and get
verification. So I did. I wrote to KOB and was recruited by IRCA. I wound up
receiving "DX Monitor" by 3rd class mail (I think).

I did some SW listening afterwards but found AM more interesting. I seem to
recall getting on Radio Havana Cuba's mailing list... but I don't recall every
verifying any other SW stations.

Hi All:
BCB, pretty much exclusively from about seventh grade on. I was interested in
Ham radio but never had the money to invest. When my friend Chris, who was a
ham operator, moved away one of the things that drew me and Bruce Heimburger
together was an interest in BCB DX. Bruce did more SW than I did, but all I had
was one of those old multi-band tube radios. But even after I bought Chris's
old Lafayette allband rx I didn't pay much attention to SW.
What I want to know is how Jim Renfrew DXes FM where he lives. When I lived
just down the road in Barre Center, I got good signals out of almost every FM
from Buffalo north to Barre, Ontario, then across to Kingston and across Lake
Ontario to Sodus, New York. That meant there was a signal on almost every
channel, and I note that at least three new signals have been added since.

2018-02-08 Thread James Renfrew
Shortwave first around age 12 or 13, but quickly followed by MW, much
later LW, FM and TV. My first MW DX was WHLO 640 on a very whistle-y
Heathkit kit my dad and I built, a GR-100 or something like that.

These days MW and FM are the priority, though I occasional dabble in the
others, particularly if there's a tip circulating about something.

Re: [IRCA] Informal "poll"

2018-02-08 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Russ,

I started with BCB as a kid.  Probably about 10 or 11.  Our next door
neighbor was carrying a LARGE old wooden Philco radio from the 40's out
to the curb to throw away.  It seems that where they had it stored in
the attic of a house they were renting, someone had stolen all the tubes
out it.  He gave it to me and I sat down with a tube substitution book
and my Dad's box of tubes and was able get it running again.  I think I
learned to solder replacing a couple of old caps that had dried out.
Still have it.

I do know that they do beam to the NNW in the early evening but I do not
know the specific times. There is a dxer in Indiana that had them at a

Re: [IRCA] TWR Bonaire Inaugurates 450 kW Transmitter

2018-02-08 Thread Bruce Portzer
I just returned from a Caribbean cruise, where I made a point of
checking 800 during local evenings.

PJB was local quality near the southeast corner of Cuba at 0210 1/29,
giving contact info and RTM/Transmundial IDs.  The carrier dropped for
1-2 seconds a few times as though they were having technical issues.

Further south, the signal was not nearly as strong near the coasts of
Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica.  Near Panama, 800 had a battle between
3 stations at least once when I checked.

PJB was local quality again near Grand Cayman and the SW corner of Cuba
on 2/3 and 2/4 respectively (with traces of another station in the
background).  No carrier drops, so the earlier problem had apparently
been fixed.  It sure sounded like 450 kw with a directional pattern,
being near their primary target.

has a null in my direction?
Using a Walkman SRF M37V.

Just had a visit by a couple who just came back from Bonaire who
helped with the upgrade.  Also saw the live streaming of the dedication
service.

Does it sound like the old TWR we heard in the 70's and 80's?

Thanks!

Did anyone do a recording this morning (8 February) that would have
included WBZ-1030 at around 1010UT (5:10AM EST)?

If so, please contact me off list. No prizes or anything, just
trying to help out another DXer!

best wishes,
