[IRCA] TP 21 Sep Victoria version.

2018-09-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Perhaps a touch under yesterday morning's strength, and slightly more DU action
as well, but at 1340UT, signals seemed to peak, with many channels showing more
than one signal.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1333UT

747 JOIB man in Japanese //828 1314UT briefly at this level

774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1322UT; still holding forth pretty well at 1400UT

828 JOBB man in Japanese //747 1314UT

972 HLCA woman and man in Korean, 1339UT

1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese 1330UT, stronger on north Flag

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 JOIK excited man in Japanese (sports?) //594 1317UT

612 4QR woman talking DU English 1333UT

864 English pop music, peaking at 1340UT, after woman talking Japanese earlier;
JOXR has been heard here

954 JOKR man and woman in Japanese 1351UT, woman mentioned "TBS rajio"

1287 JOHR man in Japanese 1346UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

558 HLQH woman in Korean 1334UT; //603 a few minutes earlier, when weaker

666 JOBK man talking //594 1322UT

693 JOAB Chinese lessons 1316UT

702 NHK2 woman in Portuguese? //774 1348UT

1143 Taiwan Fisheries woman in Chinese //738 1343UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

549 2CR pop vocal //612 1339UT

594 3WV woman talking //612 1130UT; JOAK taking a brief breather

657 Star soft vocal music, //909 1336UT

711 man talking, sounded Korean? 1339UT HLKA?

738 Taiwan Fisheries, woman talking //1143 1343UT

765 woman talking sounded Chinese? 1339UT; CNR5 has been heard here

819 unID man talking Japanese intonation 1341UT; not N. Korean

837 JOQK woman and man talking //594 1351UT

873 JOGB Chinese lessons //774 1322UT

891 JOHK man talking //594 1330UT

909 Star soft vocal music, only west Flag 1336UT, //657

1089 female pop vocal, better on north Flag 1340UT

1098 woman talking, Chinese intonation, but no pips at 1330UT

1134 man and woman, Japanese intonation 1342UT

1152 NHK2 woman talking //774 1352UT

1206 man talking, Korean intonation 1342UT; Yanbian likely

1503 man mumbling, better on west Flag 1331UT; not //594, maybe Sport?

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

531 639 846 855 918 936 945 1161 1179 1269 1296 1314 1323 1332 1422 1593
seemed to be Asian;
531 576 585 675 792 846 1548 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Brainstorming - Temporary Antenna Supports

2018-09-21 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

Thanks to Dave Aichelman, Roy Barstow, and Bill Nollman on the Cape Cod DXers
list and also Nick Hall-Patch, Colin Newell, Bruce Portzer, Chuck Hutton, Guy
Atkins, and Ken Brookner on the IRCA list for the many useful suggestions about
temporary antenna supports.

The info request certainly garnered a lot of sage advice that will not only
benefit me but (most likely) quite a few other DXers too.

Besides supporting various sorts of wire loops, temporary vertical antennas
(including those for multi-element arrays) would be another reason to try out
different support poles.

I am going to check out the numerous links in the suggestions, likely purchase
one or more pieces, try them out, and put together a webpage with
recommendations. I may wish to include some of the comments recently offered.
If anyone does not want his comments or name included, let me know.

Before finalizing the online article I will do some additional browsing of ham
and MW DX publications and web content to see what I can find in construction
articles, DXpedition / Field Day reports, and other comments.

Most likely I'll have some sort of rough draft article up before the end of
October even if things I order have not yet arrived. This will reference
suggestions just made, as noted below, and other information I read later.
Eventually that same link will point to the final-version article which I hope
to be a valuable resource on the topic.

Hi Mark, you may remember my 7.5' tent pole loops, used for my 1st trip to
Kawaii back in 2012. I still use them and instead of bungee cords to hold them
together, I now use plastic 'antenna plates' from DXE cut to size to secure the
'X' shape. My poles are 9mm thick, but there are 11mm poles out there that
would allow a much larger loop to be built. Using the plastic antenna plates
also means that you can change the shape of the loops and put mounting brackets
on each loop to suspend them higher in the air. The best part is they collapse
down to a small form factor for travel, movement and fitting through small
spaces. The 'daiche' files, next to last file, is a picture of 2 of them as
originally designed. Now they have the rigid plastic antenna plate as a center
support. I use these loops as bi-directional, flag and as phased pairs.

They have fiberglass poles of different sizes, length, thickness, etc.

I have been using them for many years now and like them.

The sections telescope to get what height one needs.

For my truck mobile I use 2 sections that are 3ft. long that extend to 6ft.
With 3ft. long I always keep them in the back behind the seats. The wire is
attached to the poles and takes about 10 to 15 minutes to set up my system and
ready to record. I can leave the house at 6:30 PM and in 1/2 hour at Menauhant
beach be ready to go for 7 PM capture.

Take care,

Roy

I like the Jackite fiberglass poles. They twist lock quite easily (but stay
locked when upright) and you can buy them in many sizes up to 31 feet long. If
the picture comes through below you can see my setup from this summer in North
Dakota. That’s about 23 feet at the top and maybe 60 feet wide, much bigger
than you want but that’s ok, you can buy the shorter poles or buy the 31’ and
just open what you need. In my case I don’t use the top 2 sections because they
are much too thin. I also like that a standard guy ring stays put nicely about
10 feet above the ground with no other hardware needed. That’s where I have the
white ropes attached. These poles collapse down to 46 inches and if you break a
section you can buy just the section(s) you need from Jackite.

I think you might be a little surprised at the telescoping poles, Mark.

32' telescoping fiberglass pole collapses to <4'

This company provides a 13.5' pole that collapses to 20", carry-on
luggage dimensions:

They also provide a mount.

I notice DXEngineering now carries them
too: https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/sbm-mini-poles

I use bamboo poles - one or two sections lashed together giving me 26? lengths
that last for 2 or 3 DX seasons - they tear down easily and transport well...
survive nasty weather... very rustic as well... non conductive... cheap. Don?t
contribute to global warming...

They are what hold up my Flags and End-fed for the Amateur bands.

Re: [IRCA] Question concerning propagation differences

2018-09-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
As higher power stations tend to congregate on the lower band in many
locations, the lower band often seems to deliver more regular
overseas DX here, Carl. However, the "real" DX seems to be on the
higher band, on the occasions when the lower power suddenly punch
through (the extended band Australians sometimes do pretty well
considering their <1000watts power.for example)

This season so far, I would say that the lower band Asians /
Australians have been putting on a better show.

best wishes,

Nick

KPUG-1170 often has a chunk of dead air at the top of the hour. The

Probably you've heard the Japanese on 1440 as well, and NHK1 has been

good on the other 9kHz channels however. Thanks for the reminder.

2018-09-21 Thread ken brookner

Oh, I've done the power button thing myself a few times...  Who hasn't?

I really enjoy your vids, Colin.  They show me what's possible and offer
incentive to up my game here.  For instance I received 1566 on an SDR
catch this morning too, but nothing like you did!  Might have done
better if I'd been up to steer my array, but maybe not by much.  I'll
set the alarm and see one of these mornings.

And, I love watching the R8 in use...

Sept 21 at 1202-1215 UT, another search this time on the rotatable DX-398 with
DF notations for most: 558-NW, 594-SSE? (beware, probably the KZLS 1640 spur I

And here is another option : the satellite dish stands that RV'ers use.

I concur with all the comments about fiberglass poles, especially Chuck's..
he knows whereof he speaketh.

I'll mention that I'm fond of "pro audio speaker stands", such as this one
(I own three):
https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Universal-Speaker-Stand-Holder/dp/B000E0PPG0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8=1537502614=8-3=pro+speaker+stand
The pricing is very reasonable and the stands can hold anything from
fiberglass poles to Wellbrook loops. For the Wellbrook loops I add one of
these mounts:
https://www.amazon.com/Speaker-Mounting-Adapter-Bracket-Tripod/dp/B00IGGRXT6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8=1537502847=8-3=pro+speaker+stand+mounting+bracket

While the stands won't weather high winds on the Rockwork cliffs, they will
hold up better in moderate wind if you add some weight like wrap-around leg
weights (such as used for exercising).

Re: [IRCA] Morning TP Methodology?

2018-09-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Yes, and...no. They aren't in use every day, but help to point one
in the direction of what web stream might be of use if audio should
appear.Last night, Algeria's Jil FM was likely delivering a
carrier on 531 here...11 Hertz high, which coincides well with what
is listed on MWOffsets, plus Colin Newell has heard it in the last
couple of years. Audio never appeared unfortunately.

Another day...

And, of course, if we have the capability, we should be submitting
our locals' offsets to the MWOffsets list. Also, unfortunately, another day.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP 20 Sep Victoria version.

2018-09-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
The less than usual signal peaking up was 639, CNR1, but overall, things
continued splashy with lots of carriers, many with audio traces, and erratic
fading. Perhaps not too much different from yesterday?

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

567 JOIK woman and man in Japanese //594 1344UT

594 JOAK woman in Japanese 1323UT, mostly continuing its winning ways, though
did hear something (3WV?) breaking through occasionally

639 CNR1 man in Chinese, another man agreeing 1332UT; this could be listened to
with synchronous demodulation centered on 639 (or even USB; only a het from 640
by now)

693 JOAB peaking at 1324UT, Chinese lessons

747 JOIB Chinese lessons drowning the 750 splash 1333UT

774 JOUB sounded like Portuguese lessons 1347UT

828 JOBB Chinese lesson 1318UT

972 HLCA man in Korean, 1348UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

702 NHK2 Chinese lessons 1324UT

864 HLKR two men in Korean 1343UT, //711

891 JOHK man and woman talking //594 1339UT

1566 HLAZ man in Japanese 1323UT; not at great level today; possibly its peak
was after pattern change at 1345UT when Chinese was quite readable also?

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

603 HLSA jazzy vocal 1317UT //558

612 4QR man talking DU English 1333UT

873 JOGB Chinese lessons 1323UT

945 CNR1 man talking //638 1327UT

954 JOKR man in Japanese 1330UT

963 CRI man in Russian 1339UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

531 JOQG woman talking //594 1324UT

558 HLQH 1317UT jazzy vocal //603

585 man talking, DU Enlish intonation 1338UT

657 man talking insistently, Korean intonation 1319UT

666 JOBK woman talking //594 1320UT.

711 HLKA man talking //864 1342UT

729 JOCK woman talking //594 1329UT

909 JOCB man talking //828 1335UT

936 man mumbling 1348UT, possibly China?

981 CNR1 man talking //945 1353UT

1098 CNR1 //639, man mumbling, 1315UT, not much to choose between them at this
time

1116 4BC? man talking DU English intoation 1335UT

1134 man talking quickly Japanese intonation, something else underneath 1321UT

1224 JOJK man talking //594 1348UT

1242 man and woman talking Japanese? 1340UT

1287 JOHR likely with man and woman talking, Japanese intonation 1317UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 675 736 756 819 846 855 918 1008 1026 1017 1143 1053 1089 1179 1251 1314
1422 1575  1593 seemed to be Asian;
not much else seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick
