Re: [IRCA] TP DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-30 Thread Bruce Portzer

Hi Tim

I was able to confirm that we were hearing two different stations this
morning.   I've got CNR1 //981 on my recording.  Yours may very well be
CNR11.  I don't recognize the language, so I can't help there.

The song at about 1217 sounds like something you might hear on the
Marshall Islands station, but the other stuff sounds Asian (plus
Marshalls normally signs off at 1130UT).

Maybe someone on RealDX can help.

Hi Tim

Nice going on the Asian logs.

I recorded the AM band on my SDR from 1155 to 1505 this morning.
Unfortunately, your reception of 1098 was better than mine at 1211-12 UT.

I've mostly been hearing CNR1 there this season, so I checked potential
CNR1 //s: 981 was the best with a woman talking at 1212. I need to give
it another listen, but initially it didn't seem to be // to your
recording. Other CNR1 outlets (639 756 945 1035) were mostly buried in
splatter at the time.

A couple of days ago I heard a second station mixing with CNR11. It
might have been CNR11, but I think I've already deleted the files from
that day and there aren't any reliable CNR11 parallels except on shortwave.

Do you have any more audio from 1098? I might be able to match it up
with what I have.

[IRCA] Marginal 531 Audio at 0440

2018-10-30 Thread Gary DeBock
Certainly nowhere near Victoria standards, but some marginal audio showed up on
531 kHz here at 0440. There is a SeaTac airport TIS on 530 which may account
for some of the male voice, but the female audio seemed to be definitely on
531, and nulling toward Europe. Don't know if this wispy signal sounds anything
like the Victoria "aimchair copy" material :-)

Looks like it might be opening up at 0225UTgetting a tentative
signal on 1026 which sounds awfully similar to the Radio Tabriz
webstream..And audio seems to be coming up on other channels, after a
couple of hours of futzing around.

best wishes,

Tony,

Congratulations on catching KNR on 720, and welcome to the party! Don't
forget to try 650 also, which has been better here on some nights versus
their 720 outlet. And then there's the elusive 570 which hasn't happened
here yet.

May I please join the party! With a bow to Sylvain, who started me on the
hunt — I spent weeks phasing WGN to oblivion trying for KNR Greenland on
720 after he logged it several years ago — and of course Tim and Kaz with
their recent superb achievements, I lit up the under-utilised DXE NCC-1
phaser. It has been side-lined here because recording on the Perseus
encourages the broadband approach. Hooked my 400 ft Greenland nDB BOG (c.
40 degrees; love BOG’s, they cannot fall down when cometh the ice!) to
antenna post A, and the trusty PA0RDT mini whip to B, and experimented with
reducing WGN to dust on 720. With some success. At 0218Z, as others have
noted, KNR stuck a few distinctive pop tunes into the man talking/woman
talking routine that was rumbling along and it was obvious that success was
at last at hand.

Now WGN is 400 miles from here, and pretty well 180 degrees from
Greenland, but still, it felt pretty good….right up there with logging the
75m signal a few scant weeks before they pulled the plug, back in the day..
There is about 2500 ft of creatively draped wire these days in my suburban
ravine; in Whitby, 25 miles NW of Toronto downtown, and it feels really
good I can tell you. I have bionic knees and don’t get around too well
right now. I can see future antenna maintenance could be quite a problem.
But I am seeing the Aussie and Pacific carriers at dawn (currently 1250Z or
so here), and perhaps a few from Asia over the pole will make it this
winter with the Solar low. Iceland booms in here on LW (both channels), as
do many of the Europeans lately, when conditions are good. What was that
wonderful station on 1134 that I heard earlier than 2pm local time a few
years ago? And if all that fails, there are those amazing remote listening
SDRs from which you can hear the World, as weak, or as strong, as you wish.

A phasing story from last night. I live 12 miles NNW from WGN's xmtr. I
put down a 288 ft BOG at about 35 deg // a 177 ft one. Phase null of

WGN

peaked at about 50 dB and it was down close to S6 on Perseus.? Sure

enough

there's audio seeming // KNR webstream which was mostly talk. Then from
0104-8 a couple of bouncy tunes sung by females clinched it leaving me

no

doubt. This using the Quantum Phaser which I think I'd like 2:1 or even

3:1

Vernier knobs for.
When I got Greenland at my WI DX paradise a decade ago, WGN and KNR

were

about S7-8 using longer terminated BOGs. At 12 miles distance I have no
skywave to worry about.
I couldn't get Greenland on 650 where even though WSCR and WSM are

close

together on the dial and in similar directions, WSCR IBOC crept up

during

best null on WSM and visa-versa.
IBOC sucks but phasing ROCKS. Short BOGs aren't impressive 'til you

phase

them to create good back nulls. ? 73 KAZ?--

Re: [IRCA] TP DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-30 Thread Bruce Portzer

[IRCA] Usual late Oct sunset skip alert.

2018-10-30 Thread Neil Kazaross
Today and tomorrow may be the best two sunset skip days of the year as cx
remain very good.

What one should be looking for is distant stations while they are still on
day power at pattern. Stations switch at sunset for Oct 15, but near month
end, this switch time can be 20 minutes after sunset or so. I usually work
this from IL to my west and have many of my domestic loggings from SSS.

Quick examples from last night. 1130 KXET OR, 840 KMPH CA, 1100 KWWN NV,
1510, KFNN AZ, 870 KFLD WA.

73 KAZ Barrington IL.

PS Basically don't bother with SSS on Nov 1 when many stations switch 45
minutes earlier and won't be present.

Nice stuff! Asian TP were better here in IL yesterday with a couple audible
but not as good as you have. A DKAZ aimed due west while it is great for
DU's isn't optimal for Japan/Korea/etc. In passing I thought the very weak
female talk on 747 was JJ rather than 4QS (several low band Aussies
audible) but need to check recording to try to make sure, but that was it
for possible TP audio today.

Re: China 1098. Yesterday, V7AB OC was stronger than I'd ever had it. I
listened to see if China or something could background it, but heard
nothing, I'll listen again. Today OC wasn't nearly as strong.

Re: China check for 1205.96 in here with some Korean talk just pushing

Excellent loggings Tim. 747 is parallel to 774, 828, 693 etc at the
time we hear them, so easy to check them off.

1098? We've been hearing a lot of CNR1 on the coast. If you have
the Pacific Asian Log, then in the "Networks" section, CNR1 shortwave
parallels are listed (as are CNR11), if shortwave is any good
there. It's pretty poor here right now.

Otherwise, Chris Kadlec gave a link to a pdf about webstreams for
the various CNR's and others awhile ago:

NW would work and you'd have more of a mix of TP and DU in these cx, and
some differences in QRM.

TP's worse here this morning and while detectable if I got any audio is was
very weak and only on 747 which might just be Aussie as several usuals were
audible at my SR 1221. 1205.96 had a carrier but no audio today from

[IRCA] Chinese Wave Continues (Preliminary)

2018-10-30 Thread Gary DeBock
Although most of the DXers in the local area have probably become accustomed to
great Asian conditions, here at this location there is never enough great DX to
stop testing FSL antenna improvements in preparation for a Hawaii trip. Even
considering the enhanced conditions of the past week this morning's session was
one of the better ones, with 603-China finally keeping HLSA down most of the
time, and with 837-China hitting S9 peaks again. 936-China (Anhui?) had very
good audio at times, and 783-China was strong enough for language recognition.
756-CNR1 had its best audio this week (a garbled S5), as did 1035-CNR1 (about
the same). The chance to test out tiny 5 inch FSL antennas in awesome
propagation is like a dream come true, and it will never get old! :-)

603 China Hulun Buir? Female speech at strong level at 1441 over HLSA's
music and a wimpy NHK1's female speech

936 China Anhui? Chinese male speech and interval music at very good
strength at 1437 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/s2jcvcv1rf68m7qruf7vx9kspmikbctb

in a

snarl here for much of the past week, with no clear winner.

A phasing story from last night. I live 12 miles NNW from WGN's xmtr. I

peaked at about 50 dB and it was down close to S6 on Perseus.? Sure

 Vernier knobs for.
When I got Greenland at my WI DX paradise a decade ago, WGN and KNR were
about S7-8 using longer terminated BOGs. At 12 miles distance I have no
 skywave to worry about.
I couldn't get Greenland on 650 where even though WSCR and WSM are close
together on the dial and in similar directions, WSCR IBOC crept up during
best null on WSM and visa-versa.
IBOC sucks but phasing ROCKS. Short BOGs aren't impressive 'til you phase

[IRCA] TP 29 Oct Puyallup Version

2018-10-30 Thread Gary DeBock
In honor (honour) of the phenomenal DXers across the border who compile
exhaustive TP-DX reports daily while a slacker on this side of the line uses
most of his free hobby time to tweak tiny little ferrite antennas into wicked
ocean beach overachievers
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/h6xnzt3ms0r5pn7a5vh1hipgc4tonnlt

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly)

:

594 JOAK Japanese news by man at 1403; trace of China underneath at times
603 HLSA Korean pop music //558 keeping a romping China in line for most (but
not all) of the session
639 CNR1 Chinese Synchros Female speech at nuclear-powered level at 1438
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/q9k2gw16dzeg3j3p8q1rpxll5gqzvzbb

657 N. Korean martial music at 1325 during war with pesky Chinese co-channel
738 BEL2 Female Chinese speech //1143 also at a nuclear-powered level at 1425
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/e26q6ucfw9ddp5e8vuo63c20g04f0pmw

747 JOIB Japanese male and female conversation //693 at various times after 1400
819 KCBS Huge strength with wacky music but barely making it through the local
splatter around 1355
972 HLCA Rising up and down with S9+ peaks throughout sunrise enhancement

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise)
:
603 China Battling HLSA all session long, but never quite able to put away the
Korean. NHK1 also joined in at 1418 to make it a three ring circus
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/4h7qqu5epigm77cqd4z5n6e75xeprnkv

621 UnID Monstrous heterodyne with Portland at 1325 but the pocket radio's DSP
filtering just couldn't dig it out
756 CNR1 Loud mushy speech by Chinese man at 1413 sounding like muffled echoes
from a train tunnel
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/4ydz4nhc4tee15xpe16rqffkvxuexz0s

837 China Some Chinese music reached this level at times but not for long; no
Japanese co-channel today

1017 CRI Very briefly with good peaks of Korean speech around 1408, but fizzled
quick
1044 CRI The Japanese service tanked out early on after 1400

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

783 China Definite Chinese speech by lady at 1418, but with none of Nick's
Chinese opera. This was its best signal all week
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/b8fgk2ng2v86h5k775gv0v2spv7zu4dp

936 China Some female Chinese speech discernable at 1422, but not for long
963 CRI Russian service in a definite skid this morning
1035 CNR1 Synchros never came anywhere close to their 756//

That's all for now-- I have some antennas to work on :-)

73 and Good DX,

Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, close to BC)
