[IRCA] TA's in Victoria

2018-11-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Believe it or not there were TA carriers this evening in Victoria, at
2330UT, about 50 minutes before local sunset. And, by the time
sunset arrived, they were gone, and have remained gone ever since.

However, did verify that last night's reception on 999 was COPE
Madrid, at 50 kw, a pretty nice catch way out here.

Recorded the same music sequence at 0200UT on 1296 kHz on the KiwiSDR
in Alicante, and that was parallel also with 999.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] 21 Nov Victoria version.

2018-11-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Definitely poorer reception of TPs in Victoria this morning

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK piano and orchestral music //567 1453UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

774 JOUB English lessons 1451UT

972 HLCA man in Korean 1505UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

567 JOIK //594 1446UT

693 JOAB English lessons slipping past CBU; //747 1514UT

747 JOIB //693 1514UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

576 2NR pips and fanfare 1500UT, very weak

603 soft instrumental music typical of HLSA 1455UT

828 JOBB //747 1456UT

873 JOGB //774 1450UT

891 JOHK NHK nyusu after pips //594 1500UT

1242 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1553UT

1287 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1610UT

1557 pop vocal 1528UT; Taiwan?

1575 VoA two women talking, 1521UT, sounding almost Japanese, but couple of
Voice of America IDs at 1530UT cleared it up

1593 CNR1? woman talking, Chinese intonation 1539UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 621 639 657 855 864 918 945 954 1134 1386 1422 1494 1503 1566 seemed to be

This list doesn't support attachments, Paul. I wasn't listening so can't
offer any feedback other than to note that nothing major has occurred on a
global basis in terms of geomagnetic activity.

Re: [IRCA] Kauai Island AM-DXing.. Know Before You Go (Conclusion)

2018-11-21 Thread Gary DeBock
Craig, Nick and Bill,

Thank you all very much for your generous comments on the Kauai DXing posts.
And no, Nick, Costco is not giving me any finder's fee for travel referrals :-)
But I wouldn't turn down a discount on the next Kauai trip!
Bill, I was actually also thinking of you in Lubec during the Kauai trip, as
you tracked down multiple breakthrough TP's that almost never show up on East
Coast beaches... especially when you tracked down 1098-Marshalls, an island DX
station not too far from Kauai. I was thinking of how much trouble you went
through to set up the DKAZ in the freezing cold, and how I was just stepping
out into the 78 degree patio to track down Middle East and Asian DX with a
1-minute antenna setup.
As far as a fair reward for real dedication and sacrifice, the Asian and
Pacific TP's sowing up in Lubec far outweigh anything that showed up in Kauai!
Your efforts to set up the Kiwi SDR's so that others could share in the DXing
excitement certainly went above and beyond the call of duty. DXing innovation,
creativity and dedication are alive and well on both coasts!

2018-11-21 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Same thing was seen here Paul. Don't have the evidence you do, but things
were quite lively until I had to go out at 0330. When I got back about
0515 only a couple of feeble TA carriers remained. In fact I recall
checking to see if I'd inadvertently flipped an antenna switch!

Re: [IRCA] TA's in Victoria

2018-11-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Thanks Chuck. WRTH says that they don't start breaking out until
0555UT daily, so figured that at 0200UT COPE would be doing network
programming. Unfortunately, I didn't have the luxury on my own
recording of finding a parallel; it was surprising enough hearing
anything on 999!

I'll go hunting on some webSDRs this evening at the same time, as
that sounded like a standard top of the hour sequence.

It's certainly sounds the same Walt, with the addition that the talk
sounds Spanish. My recording was far too rugged to determine that.

Was it parallel with other COPE channels at the time? That would be
a firm ID for me, and a major catch on a not particularly exciting evening.

[IRCA] Overnight conditions

2018-11-21 Thread Paul Crankshaw

Hi

This is an observation on overnight TA conditions from across the pond.

There appeared to be a wipe out of TA signals around 0500 utc. I do a
plot of carriers on each frequency and nearly every frequency shows
audio disappearing at around that time ... almost as if a plug has been
pulled.

It would be interesting to learn if anyone 'on the other side' noticed this.

I'm attaching a plot of 1430 kHz, which is typical of just about every
frequency The white/blue fuzz around a carrier represents audio present
and you can see what happens at 0500.

2018-11-21 Thread bill [his.com]
I’d like to 2nd Nick’s comments Gary. There were a few times I thought of you
there in Hawaii with a souped up portable radio and modest sized FSL and
compared it to freezing my butt off in Maine trying to keep up two huge DKAZ
antennas in a very unfriendly environment. Then I got under the quilts at
night and let the SDR do the work and knew I’d made the right choice. The only
thing worse than having to keep a big antenna up is having to actually DX out
there live!

Thanks again for the write up and exposing us all to some pretty amazing DX!

Re: [IRCA] TA's in Victoria

2018-11-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
It's certainly sounds the same Walt, with the addition that the talk
sounds Spanish. My recording was far too rugged to determine that.

Was it parallel with other COPE channels at the time? That would be
a firm ID for me, and a major catch on a not particularly exciting evening.

Nick, check this one from Listening Waters, PEI. Same time, on November

2018-11-21 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Heh, I hope that Costco is giving you a good finders' fee for that
write up Gary (hi). It certainly sounds like quite the deal all right.

Seriously, thanks for an excellent write up on how to approach a new
and exotic DX location, and how to take full advantage of it.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Kauai Island AM-DXing.. Know Before You Go (Conclusion)

2018-11-21 Thread Gary DeBock
Finally, In consideration of the exceptional value of the Costco travel
package and the superb transoceanic DX propagation prevalent on the Kauai
beach, this 6 day Hawaii vacation proved to be as much of a lifetime hobby
