[IRCA] Antenna rotors for magnetic loops

2018-12-16 Thread Mark Pettifor

I don't see any recent discussions about antenna rotors in my searches.

What would be a good rotor for use with the W6LVP?

I've never used a rotor, so I don't really know what to look for in
regards to the best features for AM DXing.

2018-12-16 Thread Russ Edmunds
Depending upon how easily accessible the rotor will be, you'll want to get
something that is sturdy enough to handle winds and ice. I've learned to cap to
top of the mast if it's open to prevent water infiltration and also to seal
where the mast goes into the rotor to accomplish the same.

Mark,
For my Wellbrook loop I simply used a rotator for a standard TV
antenna. Purchase from Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, on line, etc.

[IRCA] HLCA Hanminjok on 972 kHz

2018-12-16 Thread tim rahto
Hello everyone.

I scored my first MW catch out of Korea this morning when HLCA 972 popped
up out of the splatter at 1305 UTC. They weren't strong for very long, but
they were nice enough to give me a little intelligible audio before
disappearing. I will consider this an early Christmas present.

Re: [IRCA] Antenna rotors for magnetic loops (W6LVP loop)

2018-12-16 Thread STEVE
I realize Mark (or anyone else) never asked, but I've done extensive
experiments with the W6LVP loop and preamp. It is poor for MW and only
starts to do well at HF. Due to its high input impedance it does not
match the single-turn loop until up at HF. If your interest is primarily
MW I do not recommend the W6LVP setup.

(I've done the same for the newer MFJ 1886 loop and preamp and that one
is even worse--it doesn't even have decent gain at MW.)

2018-12-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Nice catch Tim.

It was a reasonable morning on the west coast as well, though I
noticed stronger signals around 1400UT than at sunrise. Sunrise,
however, can be when more unusual signals appear. This morning,
that was CNR6 on 1089.

[IRCA] TP 16 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Signals were strong around 1420UT (better audio on 621, 657, 819, 846,936, 1044
some of which didn't show up later), but dropped away towards 1500UT. Still, a
reasonable haul with some sunrise recovery present.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK 1551UT

747 JOIB 1513UT

774 JOUB 1508UT

828 JOBB 1506UT

972 HLSA 1549UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

738 Taiwan Fisheries woman //1143 1509UT

873 JOGB 1527UT

945 CNR1 man Chinese 1554UT //1251

954 JOKR man Japanese 1541UT

1287 JOHR pop vocal music interspersed with woman in Japanese, a late bloomer
1609-1617UT

1566 HLAZ woman and man in Chinese 1517UT; heard later and more weakly with
Russian talk by man 1651UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

567 JOIK //594 1550UT

639 CNR1 woman in Chinese //6175 1520UT

693 JOAB music box 1532UT

864 pop music 1513UT (Korea?)

891 JOHK //594 1537UT

1017 female ballad assumed CRI as on north Flag and not NHK2 1527UT

1143 slow talk by man, seemed Chinese 1541UT; earlier had //738, so likely
Taiwan Fisheries

1251 CNR1 //945 1554UT

1593 CNR1 man Chinese 1511UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

558 HLQH KBS2 chimes and pips 1459-1500UT // 603

603 HLSA KBS2 chimes and pips 1459-1500UT // 558

657 orchestral music sneaking through splat 1506UT

702 NHK2 //774 1513UT

873 female operatic singing 1533UT over NHK2 chimes, likely N. Korea

918 Shandong RGD //1548 on Korean KiwiSDR, slight delay with man
talking,1532UT; strong carrier

981 CNR1 //945 1537UT

999 woman talking Chinese intonation 1458UT

1053 pop music 1517UT,north Flag, so Japan?

1089 CNR6 female choral music 1553UT //6165, also woman talking 1557UT //6165

1188 JOKP //594 1548UT

1206 man talking Korean? likely Yanbian 1456UT; was stronger near 1400UT

1242 man talking, Japanese intonation 1540UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

621 711 729 846 855 882 909 9361026 1134 1152 1179 1224 1269 1296 1323
1332  1386 1422   1458   seemed to be Asian;
882 seemed to be DU

best wishes,
