[IRCA] TP 12 Mar Victoria version.

2019-03-12 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
The dire predictions don't seem to have had much effect on reception; still
pretty reasonable.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK 1355UT

1575 VoA powering in at 1411UT with woman in ?? (Khmer listed) Fading
somewhat by 1430UT when VoA ID was heard

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

603 HLSA woman in Korean //558 1415UT

774 JOUB 1423UT

972 HLCA 1436UT

1386 NHK2 //774 1418UT

1422 JORF woman in Japanese 1419UT

1566 HLAZ? and ??? two stations mixing; pop music and maybe Chinese talk,
then more sedate Chinese talk by man also assumed HLAZ, along with a grumble on
channel 1416UT

1593 NHK2 //1386 1425UT, with CNR1 Chinese man trading places (//6175 earlier)

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

558 HLQH 1415UT //603

567 JOIK //594 1414UT

1503 JOUK //594 1423UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

666 JOBK //594 1418UT

747 JOIB //774 1412UT

945 CNR1 man and woman //6175 1429UT

1206 man talking,Korean? 1413UT (off channel)

1242 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1419UT

1314 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1414UT

1323 woman talking, Russian intonation? 1415UT

1332 female vocal 1414UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 612 621 639 657 693 702 711 918 1017 1215 1287 1359 1431 1485 1494 1512 1539
 1548 1557 1584 seemed to be Asian;

585 612 1548 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 12 March 2019

2019-03-12 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Running too late for a proper report tonight, but in brief, had
good signals from Japan this morning on 594, 693, 747, 774, and 828 and
also a bit weaker on 666.  As well had Australia on 891, 1548, and
surprisingly 1701.02 with Koran recitations (Presumably Islamic Voice
given the offset).  First x-band audio here in months.   X-band had
other good carriers too, and I might have dug out further audio if I had
the time.    Yesterday wasn't bad either, with the highlight being audio
from one of the ABC stations on 1161.

The chat channel over at DXER.ca/blab is hopping tonight.

Colin Newell - Victoria - B.C. CANADA -

I will be interested to see how this all plays out. I'll be reading the reviews.

Not that I have much of a "horse in the race" as 95% of my DXing is
after-the-fact, sometimes a few hours after and sometimes a few weeks after.
This is somewhat out of necessity as peak DX time (local sunset typically
around here) lands right in the middle of family dinner, something that can
stretch over two hours from the start of prep to the clean-up of the last dish
or utensil. Fortunately, by allowing time-shifting of listening, SDR file
capture has taken away some of the "recluse during good DX time" problems many
of us had pre-2005 or so. One can do normal things with family and friends at
normal times. DXing can be done at some otherwise-useless time such as the
middle of the day waiting for work being done on the car.

Still there will be a few times when I'll be DXing live. Sometimes this will be
on my home gear, sometimes on a remote SDR, and sometimes in the car at a beach
(where, presumably, I could hook to the chat site via cellphone web browser).

One thing I can do is publicize this chat channel on some other lists. That may
generate more users covering more geographic areas.

Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

We have been in Ottawa for a week now, and not a sign of them. (I was
extra keen to hear them last week as I was filling out a radio ratings
diary.) When we were here october to January, they were usually on and a fun
listen. (I still have CJEU 1690 to listen to French music and gab.)

A quick search shows no sign of an internet presence, or announcement of an
interruption. Years ago, I would have telephoned them, but my French is now
not so good...

[IRCA] XHDATA D-808 and Radiwow R-108 Loopsticks

2019-03-12 Thread Gary DeBock
For those who weren't aware of the fact, XHDATA and Radiwow are actually the
same Chinese company, which has specialized in wholesale design appropriation
of the C.Crane Skywave SSB's technical innovations (in the D-808) and physical
cabinet characteristics (in the R-108). As for why they choose to go by two
different names, maybe they figure that C.Crane would be less inclined to sue
two companies for design theft than one? Of course C.Crane can't sue anybody in
China, where the term "copyright" means "the right to copy." The Fortuna, CA
company has reason to deeply regret building their breakthrough Skywave SSB
model at the Redsun factories in Shenzhen-- which is of course the home of
XHDATA/ Radiwow.

Anyway, since both reverse-engineered models have been "Supercharged" here with
7.5" loopsticks, I thought some DXers might like to know about their stock
loopsticks. In the XHDATA D-808 model the loopstick has a 98mm x 8mm x 4mm
ferrite rod with a 12mm coil, for a total inductance of 341 uH (see detailed
photo posted at https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/nimnw5jffcnk5h11yvumsy479synihvv

The Radiwow R-108 has a 70mm x 8mm x 4mm ferrite rod with the same 12mm coil,
for a total inductance of 212 uH. Of course because of the longer loopstick the
D-808 has significantly better MW sensitivity than the R-108, and in fact has
better MW sensitivity than any Ultralight radio (the D-108 is a little too
large to qualify as an Ultralight portable).

Following the typical practice of companies in the Chinese domestic market,
XHDATA/ Radiwow does not offer any manufacturer's warranty on their radio
models-- but this doesn't seem to have deterred their sales on the
international market. When a purchaser can get a $75 model like the D-808 which
is highly competitive with the $169.98 Skywave SSB (with a few added features
like a more powerful audio amp and a long endurance rechargeable battery),
sales are definitely going to happen. So far the component quality of both the
D-808 and R-108 seem quite good, and international purchasers are cautiously
optimistic that this will continue. Hopefully this Chinese company will avoid
the Tecsun example of cutting down quality (as in the PL-380's digital
shielding) in order to increase profits.
