Les,,
When I lived in Atlanta (2000-2007) Croatia 1134 (now silent), The Saudi on
1521, and Absolute Radio, England 1215 were the best I heard. However, I had
TA's on long wave more often. France 162 was best, but Algeria 153, and England
198 (with beacon QRM) began to show in November.

Subject: [NRC-AM] TA DXing from Southeast

I've never attempted any Trans-Atlantic DXing from my home here in the
Southeastern US...and have only received a handful of foreign stations
on MW. Mostly in the Caribbean, and South America. But after reading
about DX'ers as far inland as Oklahoma having some success with TA
receptions--I'm wondering if I dismissed this too quickly?

Lots of questions:

1.) Is it possible or likely that I could receive TA's here in Central
Alabama?

2.) What would be the best target stations to start with? I'm assuming
that Radio Farda 1575 might be a good one? What others?

3.) Best time of day to start looking for them?

4.) Optimum mode and bandwidth to look using an SDR-IQ?

Any other advice for someone brand-new to the effort?

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Daytime DX

2014-02-26 Thread brockradio

Best daytime DX from my new QTH in Ireland:

Daytime (10AM-2PM local) winter sky wave in terms of power:
702-NDR Info-Flensburg, Germany-5,000 watts at 754 miles
936-Gold-Naish Hill, England-180 watts at 296 miles.

Daytime (10AM-2PM local) winter sky wave in terms of distance:
639-CRo-Prague, Czech Republic-750 KW at 1022 miles
684-RNE Nacional- Sevilla, Spain-300 KW at 1063 miles

In terms of summer ground wave, 585 RNE Nacional- Madrid, Spain, with 600 KW is
in around the clock all year.

The high band stations from Germany (1422), Luxembourg (1440), and France
(1377, 1404) are in day time year round.

On long wave, 171 Morocco with 320 KW in my direction from their 2,000 KW
directional antenna at 1,236 miles is in all year and around the clock, and
alone now that Russia has closed down. It is weak and just above the noise.
Poland 225, and the soon to be closed down Czech Republic on 270 have very good
daytime signals here at 1,100 + miles.

I am inland. Not on the coast. Down by the sea, in Cork, Algeria 155 is on top
of Germany on a consumer long wave portable (Sony SW-11) with no external
antenna at noon.

I love day time ground wave DX, and am still checking at the top of the hour to
ID some of the stations in the pile-ups on crowded channels like 1548.

Cheers, and 73's to all

Today was a good day for daytime DX, with a nice mix of stations from
Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee coming in. I remember
hearing a station in Kentucky one mid-day morning, and being pretty
proud of that catch.

I'm curious what others have managed to log during the daytime hours?
Best catch? Tips and/or equipment advice for daytime DXing? My noise
levels here in suburbia are actually lower in the daytime than at night
unless I want to stay up well past midnight.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] B-P-B-P Mystery station on 680 KHz

2013-10-11 Thread brockradio

25 watt beacon BP on 680 is located just north of Moscow. It is one of several
beacons on what we call the broadcast band that remain on the air from Russia
and the former Soviet republics. When I was in Kandahar, several from
Uzbekistan could be heard in the evening all year. A few from Europe make it
here to Ireland as they are not assigned on the regular 9 KHz channel spacing.
Many, like BP run two ID's close together, followed by a tone or more often,
silence. I can't say for sure, but my guess would be this beacon.

Just received a fascinating recording from famed DX'er HannuTikkanen,
who records from the top of the world in Lapland using aPerseus SDR and a
3,000 foot beverage. He records in this nearlynoise-free cabin location for
a week, once per year. Then spends therest of the year combing through
those looking for rare catches.

Today he sent me a recording of KKGR 680 in Helena, MT with three
crystal clear ID's. In the background you could also easily hearKBRW in
Barrow, AK. But clearest of all is a Morse Code identification at about
five words per minute. It sends out B-P-B-P in a four letter group.

Hannu had no real ideal who the station might be. He suspected an
Asian station due to the time of day for the recording. At first I thought
it was possibly a beacon of some sort, perhaps related to British
Petroleum, but it's clearly a four letter group, not a two letter group
repeating. Is 680 KHz allocated for radio location or beacon service
anywhere in the world?

Any help in solving the mystery would be appreciated.

Everyone should try to be responsible in using these - DX'ers will quickly lose
credibility with reports not based on actual facts. More than half of the cases
of stations we report on the DX lists are running day facilities at night or
similar have no factual backup. When a station sounds stronger than usual, that
doesn't cut it. Propagation may be to blame.

If you normally hear a reduction at sunset and then you don't or if the station
isn't licensed for night power, then that's more conclusive.

sunset is around 0510 UTC this week. 279 has been the strongest TP this season
out here. Full listenable quality on consumer Grundig portables with their
built in ferrite antennas. In fact, 279 beats 774 and 972 in reliability night

The Alaskan longwave beacons with voice weather have also been strong,
including 529 KHz in a battle with Cuba on 530.
