Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] WNDB Test

2013-12-07 Thread Bill Nollman
It seemed to be a westward night from here. WAMA Lima, OH heard at 2AM,
Oldies heard all night with a good ID from CKOC at 11PM and my local WMRD
heard most of the other times although weak enough. Zoomed in on the Perseus
I could see 7 distinct carriers. Wish I could've heard all of the audio.

Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Perseus captures from 1991

2014-02-21 Thread Bill Nollman
OK, let me understand this. the idea was to take 0-150MHz add a 60Hz sync
signal to keep the VCR happy, store it to tape through the Video IN jack
then on output simply remove the 60Hz and you basically have coming out what
you put in? So simple its silly! I once used a Hi-Fi VCR to capture 8 hours
of FM DX audio. Hardly genius.

Subject: [CapeDX] Perseus captures from 1991

I finally got around to going through a box of VHS videotapes from the
late '80s / early '90s spectrum capture experiments, as originally
developed by Craig Healy (NG1U), and mentioned in this article:
http://chowdanet.com/markc/webpage/WA1ION/vcrdx.pdf

There were about 6 tapes in the box. Two of these, when played into a
receiver, had reasonable performance.

One of these was the tape Craig had originally supplied me. This was
made at his QTH near Providence, RI. The whole AM band is captured.
Sensitivity on the lower half was quite low so it's primarily the local
stations such as 630, 790, and 920. Some skip signals can be heard on
the upper half of the dial. I still have to review the tape to
determine the exact date and times of recording. Items on a news /
sports station, possibly with some Google follow-up, will nail down the
date. At some point in the recording there should be a time check on
one station or another. I looked into the lower shortwave spectrum but
noted little in the way of "real" (non-birdie) signals, so no CHU or
WWV assistance on the time.

The second tape was one I made at Billerica, MA in April 1991 during
the "wee hours" of the morning: 0643-1043 UTC. Because 50 kW WRKO on
680 is only 2.8 miles / 4.5 km from the receiving site, a notch filter
for 680 was inserted ahead of the VCR input. Usable sensitivity for
the capture came in starting around 800 kHz and up.

One thing that must be kept in mind is that this primitive version of
spectrum capture had a rather small dynamic range: only about 30 to 40
dB from a hashy noise floor up to the level of a strong local on the
verge of causing distortion and spurs. The tapes, obviously, are not
going to produce much in the way of weaker signal DX.

Before the tapes have a chance to deteriorate, I'm porting at least
some of the contents over to Perseus files. This also gives a ready
method for sharing the experiment results with others. I reset the
computer date/time so that the Perseus time-stamping is relatively
close to the occurrence of the original recordings.

After I get all this stuff digitized, I'll go over it for any
interesting audio clips.

Though the "VCR DX" method became known to the MW DX world about a
quarter century ago, it is widely believed that, as far back as the JFK
administration, "spook" agencies such as the NSA were able to store
substantial RF bandwidths for later review. Broadcast studio grade
videotape, or something similar but custom-designed, was used.
Converters allowed any chunk of spectrum to be heterodyned to the
baseband range (0-3 MHz?) the tapes could accommodate. The late Gordon
Nelson (WA1UXQ) seemed aware of it. Maybe some tapes will show up at a
Fort Meade, MD fleamarket / yard sale so we can tune around and hear
stuff like Belize 834 and Bermuda 1235 once again, as well as
Murray-the-K on WINS proclaiming his status as the Fifth Beatle.

I'm not sure if the news of the latest Prince Edward Island DXpedition
has made the rounds yet.

Based on information posted on Facebook, it appears that this year's
DXpedition is underway. Participants include Bruce Conti, Brent
Taylor, and Niel Wolfish.

Seeing that East Coast DX activity, including my own, has been rather
sluggish lately, many of us will be looking forward to seeing what
these guys log. Also active in eastern Canada is Newfoundland resident
Allen Willie of "Ultralight" fame. His logs show up on Facebook more
than in the regular NRC, IRCA, etc. DX columns. Not sure what Jean
Burnell / others have in mind for Cappahayden, NL this year.

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] REMINDER - DX TEST TONIGHT

2013-04-01 Thread Bill Nollman
Does anyone know who did beep tones leading up to the top of the hour at
03:59:57, 03:59:58 and 03:59:59 followed by a long beep tone at 04:00:00?
That was audible here in central Connecticut.
Otherwise 1400 was most definitely a GY with only Fox Sports (probably
Scranton, PA) and Spanish/Mexican (probably Lowell, MA) heard, barely.

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] 690 Spanish - second opinion(s) wanted

2010-09-15 Thread Bill Nollman
Saul;

First, PLEASE record with your levels lower - way over driven.

Anyway, in the 5th file I hear the girl saying "Federal" around 0:32 - which
could be her saying the location (Mexico City is Districto Federal).
Just after the man says seis ciento noventa Aahh emmey - or 690 AM.
Problem is XEN in Mexico City goes by La 69 which would be sesenta nueve
(69).

I've been using this web site A LOT to ID my Texas dial skan and it's very
accurate ! - http://mexicoradiotv.com/frec_am.htm
I'd tempted to say this isn't XEN based on "La 69" not being heard.

This web site is also very useful -
http://radiotime.com/Search.aspx?query=mexico+690

Unfortunately while I've had 1 or 2 Mexicans on every frequency 690 is one I
didn't succeed in IDing in Texas.

One thing I've seen which is interesting is the stations in Chihuahua (the
state) seem to all do the Mexican National Anthem at the TOH. Very easy to
hear through any kind of noise !

Well, I ended up in the most challenging location I could feasibly end up -
downtown Toronto - and staying awake paid off. I've heard WBGW in Toronto
before, but certainly not from downtown where I have a 1430, 1540 and 1610
triple-play a mile or three away at Toronto Island. I thought I heard bits
of tone here and there but it was so weak I still am not sure. I was
starting to DX the Land of Nod when I was startled awake by a set of call
letters, probably about half-way through. Then at 1:50 EDT I heard
unmistakeable bugle sounds, albeit a bit weak. At first I thought it was
jazz, say a trumpet, as it faded up. I stuck around another ten minutes, to
the TOH, and heard nothing else except WAKR.

I don't think I've ever heard bugle calls used for a DX test.

I'm super glad I brought my loop-stick-modified Tecsun 380 ULR with me when
I came back from Burnt River last time around. Much more fun than getting
into my car, driving around, and hoping for the best. So this is a relog to
my Toronto log, but new using an ULR.

Looks like it got out fairly well - I wonder if the tone Pat Martin heard in

OR was the same as Shawn Axelrod in MB!

I am off to Burnt River this morning for just under a week, and later this
weekend I'll assemble a report of who heard what and feed it back to these
lists and to the two clubs and the DX test web site; and make that report
part of a thank-you to the station.

I saw this on eBay. I could not tell what type stranded or non, single
conductor or whatever but 500' for $11.95 + shipping, sounded good. Can
you tell if it's BOG Worthy? Thanks and Merry Christmas!

2009-12-22 Thread Bill Nollman
I'm presently in love with big loops. I wonder how a portable loop of maybe
15 feet high by 45 feet long compares to a 500 ft BOG ? I can tell you the
loop is really quiet with no reliance on an earth ground. The longwires I
strung up 300 feet, 10 feet in the air were VERY noisy.

Yes - On the Ground (only). My plan is to find a spooler and go to the
soccer fields near work. Unwind it and DX, then crank it back on the
spool. I also have a crate for the "Crate Loop" project and for as
gentle as I would be with it, I think 18 g would be okay. NOT if I was
leaving outdoors or whatever. The price for the first auction that I
posted would be about $21 including shipping. Not bad. May buy 2.

Thanks for the link!

BOG - if you really mean On the Ground then it might be. I've never done
a
BOG. But I really like 12 Guage stranded wire for loop antennas. Usually
about $50 at Home Depot for 500 feet. Found better deals on eBay but
shipping usually makes it about the same price. Brown is REALLY stealth

Hmmm, my 23'x30' loop/flag is a bit in need of an amp.
My 45'x75' "SuperLoop" actually has too much gain and I need to engage
attenuators on the rx !

Likewise I'm really fascinated with EWE's to include David Hamilton's
Slinky version. Unfortunately they may be too quiet for use here and
may need an amp. Wonder if one could put a EWE on the ground?

And for anyone that likes to chase beacons, there seems to be an annual
occurrence of a beacon known as "PAT" that comes from somewhere overseas. No
one seems to know exactly where though. TA's being good tonite I decided to
try for it and heard a few cycles crystal clear. Good enough to even capture
a waterfall screen shot that is almost perfect !

499.05 is about where you'll find him.
The CW is HPYXMSPAT or

The CW repeats appx every 39 seconds.
