[IRCA] Short antenna radials

2013-11-29 Thread Bob Coomler

I happened to be looking at a Google earth view of the KFI transmitting site
(33° 52' 47" N, 118°00' 47" W) which is located smack in the middle of a
commercial/industrial area.  I was struck by what a small diameter clear area
there is around the base of the antenna; maybe 150 feet.  Just curious how the
resulting short radials could really offer much efficiency?  Updates to my
understanding of the situation would be welcomed.  :-)

[IRCA] KCKM test

2014-03-23 Thread Bob Coomler

Oh geez.  Of all the stations in the Tucson area, KWFM 1330 is my closest at
about 3 miles.  Not sure I can take anything to the bank, but I heard definite
sweep tones at 0516 UTC and definite but unreadable code at 0524 (followed by
sweep tones).  Does this fit into what others might have heard?  Threw
everything I had at it, but the best null (such as it wasn't) was with my
Tecsun PL-310 ULR.  Thanks to Bob, Paul and anyone else involved.

[IRCA] KCKM snatched from the mouth of the dragon

2014-03-23 Thread Bob Coomler

I tried posting twice last night, but apparently they got lost betwixt and
between.  This was a toughie, but old age, treachery and dumb luck prevailed.
Of all Tucson stations, KWFM 1330 is the closest to me at about three miles.
Nothing at all until 0516 UTC when definite sweep tones were heard.  Next heard
was code (couldn't copy but a few letters) at 0524 followed by more sweep
tones.  All of these are consistent with what I've seen posted this morning.  I
threw everything I had at it, but my Tecsun PL-310 was the only one that
produced results.  I don't mind digging and scratching for a new one, but the
worst part was having to listen to KWFM's horrid 80's Rock programming.  Many
thanks to Bob and Paul for making this test happen!

[IRCA] KCKM and KWFM ... the epilogue

2014-03-26 Thread Bob Coomler
Several days after the KCKM test, KWFM here in Tucson has apparently gone
silent.  Nice timing guys.  Major jumble on 1330 tonight; SS which I assume is
KWKW, a talker and bits of C&W which isn't matching KCKM's online streaming.
Will keep trying to extract some ID's.  Big question though; who had the Star
Spangled Banner at 0402 UTC?

"Star 1330" as before with their quasi-1980's hits programming.  I've been

Re: [IRCA] KWFM 1330 Tucson back on

2014-04-06 Thread Bob Coomler
Steve, the KWFM office (if they have a studio, it is probably a microphone and
a box in a closet) is at St. Phillip's Plaza at Campbell Avenue and River Road.
The transmitter site is in NE Tucson just southeasterly of the Ventana Canyon
resort area.  Punch 32.314N, 110.838W into Google Earth. I am 3.3 miles due
south.
I used to listen to KFAT during my college years and always looked forward to
going to Hawaii for Radio Free Hawaii (FM I believe) sometime after that.

[IRCA] Replacing a Grundig G5

2012-09-26 Thread Bob Coomler
Although I don't do any really serious DXing while traveling, I do like to give
it a bit of a go.  I've been using a  barefoot Grundig G5 and it has provided
the basic performance I've wanted, but I've gone through three incarnations of
them and enough is enough.  The last one is now in a landfill somewhere on
Prince Edward Island, Canada.  My prime interests are LW, MW and SW with FM
being nice, but not critical.  The G5 was a good size, but I can go a bit
larger with no problems.  Willing to pay for quality.  Any thoughts or
recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: [IRCA] (OT) Is my only option to junk this old radio?

2012-11-20 Thread Bob Coomler
Dave,

I salvaged several old radios from my late in-laws.  After I dithered for
awhile, I put them up on ebay with decent results. The best price came from one
that had the chassis transplanted to a "lovingly home done" cabinet (it was
uglee!).  If nothing else, check out completed sales on ebay as it may give you
an idea of what the market is.

Good luck!

Could someone check on this tonight,  see if they are still possibly ND and, if
so, please post here?  Oregon has remained frustratingly elusive for my ULR

[IRCA] KHJ -was Call letter meanings - 75 years ago

2011-04-01 Thread Bob Coomler
KHJ's tower site was about a mile from where I grew up in Los Angeles. In those
days, it had an on-site engineer to babysit the transmitting machinery.  I'd
drop by every once in a while to say hi and we would end up talking for hours.
He gave me two pieces of advice that have served me well for years and
years: 1) Pick a job like you would a wife. Don't be swayed by glamor, but
something you can enjoy waking up to every morning. 2) Don't be overwhelmed by
the complexity of something (while looking at the wonderful old KHJ
transmitter). Take it component by component and pretty soon the pieces will
all fit together for you. Neat old guy.

KHJ call sign return was a neat trick. (I think they were Kindness Happiness
and Joy, 'doesn't entirely describe L.A. these days...) Often times on late
night excursions to Canters deli in L.A. we drive right under their two towers,
awesome site. I think I have a KXL T-shirt here for the upcoming
convention/auction. The KUJ DX test in 1995 boomed in here, plus I logged them
once on regular schedule. 'Logged KMO as well before they gave up those calls.
'Never did bag KTW from here.  I have a feeling that if KGY would ever run a
nice mid-winter dx test, they could make it here too. Oh look, it's April
already. ms

Greetings everyone.

Just wanted to inform all that I came back home yesterday afternoon after a 6
day stay at Kaiser Hospital here in S.F.
Had an attack late thursday evening with severe pain in the lower abdomen.
Went to Emergency. CT Scan showed a small perforation in the colon.
Deverticulitis, or some such.  Spent next 3 days/nights on IV's with no food or
water. Docs saw I was making progress, pain was minimizing so put off surgery
in hopes hole will heal itself.  I dunno about healing itself in a 77 year old
man but I'd bet on the alternative that the many, many, many prayers of my
family & friends reached the Good Lord and the Almighty Physician caused the
healing.  Amen!
At any rate I'm home now, feeling a LOT better, sleeping for a change (sleep
does not come easy in a hospital for any of the patients) and continuing to
heal.

Thanks to all of you on these lists that have offered the hand of friendship
over the years. Please continue.

Hope to have my 'continuing with dx' column up tomorrow.

Re: [IRCA] 30 ... or more ... years of skywave DXing

2011-04-13 Thread Bob Coomler
Great thread. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and my brother (7 years my
senior) was an active ham in high school in the late 50's and had naturally
hooked me into SWLing.  One day he mentioned that "broadcast band" (haven't
used that term for a long time) stations also had QSL cards.  Fortunately, he
had a Hallicrafters S-76 which made DXing a lot easier.  I don't recall what my
first BCB QSL was, but I was off and running.  I was already a NNRC member, but
soon joined the National Radio Club and was, eventually, an IRCA founding
member after attending the infamous Denver convention. Still remember
corresponding and running around with Frank Williams, Larry Schwartz, Tom
Seaver, and Randy Seaver.  My best DX was, and probably still is, 500 watt
WMHI-1370 in Braddock Heights, MD.  The radio influence was so pervasive that I
seriously considered a career in broadcasting. Carl Mann and Glen Kippel had
some serious talks with me and that was
that.  Geez, really miss shortwave interval signals and Monday morning
frequency checks on "the broadcast band".

Yes, that was XEHOS with children's chorus NA.  Dominant on the frequency here.
Is KMPC in English now?  Really hoping for a code ID.

Re: [IRCA] KRSN 1490 DX Test

2012-01-20 Thread Bob Coomler
Talk about pulling teeth.  Local KFFN, 5.3 miles away, made it just a week bit
difficult!  The tightest null I could get was almost north-south which was
about 45 degrees from ideal. This was with my ULR Tecsun PL-310. I did hear
high pitched sweep tones, phone off the hook tone and code that was only
semi-audible until the very end and even then didn't get much copy.  From what
I assume was the closing announcement, several mentions of Los Alamos, New
Mexico were noted.  So ... it's going in the log with thanks to all
responsible.  Also had a Fox News station fade up to a respectable level, but
no ID. Given the direction and programming, assume this was KYCA, but it won't
go in the log.

Pittsburg really isn't a suburb of Sacramento, but KATD's transmitter site
certainly is. Never realized that the transmitter was 50 miles NE of the
Pittsburg city of license in the farm lands outside of Sacto. Always nice to
learn something before lunch! I'm about 85 miles north of San Francisco and
they are an all day copy here.

[IRCA] Excel problem - sorta radio related

2010-02-05 Thread Bob Coomler
Hi all,

My "all time" log is kept in Excel (well, all my logs are). I recently did a
data sort and neglected to check the "my list has a header row" and then did a
save. And that means I can't undo, redo, etc. So now my header row (station,
date, etc) is wandering around with all the other reception information. Is
there any way to restore this or otherwise recreate the header without causing
additional problems? I know this isn't a burning question for everyone else on
the list, so please reply directly.

Thanks for any assistance!

[IRCA] Excel problem ... solved

2010-02-05 Thread Bob Coomler
Many, many thanks to all (and there was a bunch) who responded with offers of
help and suggestions. The consensus was to insert a blank row above the data,
copy and paste the header row there, delete the misplaced header row and THEN
save. Worked like a charm. Thanks again guys.

Big signal here too.  They used to be a rare catch, but not anymore... now
that CHRB seems to have tightened up their night pattern and are much weaker
than they used to be out here in the east, it looks like CKMX has stepped up
to replace them as the easiest AB to hear!

CKDQ-910, CFAC-960, and CKWX-1130 are also audible here tonight, so it looks
like propagation to the west is picking up.

Hi  Everybody,

On Feb 24th QCWA Chapter 154 in West Palm Springs is celebrating Leo's
100th birthday.  For those that don't remember Leo owned and operated
World Radio Laboratories in Council Bluffs, Iowa for many years.

So here's the plan, take a QSL card, write 'Happy 100th Birthday Leo' on
it and send it to:

Leo Meyerson, W0GFQ
19 Park Lane
Rancho Mirage, CA 92270

Gene Pentecost, President of Chapter 154 will make sure they get to the
party so everyone that attends can enjoy them.

One last thing, tell every ham you know to do the same thing, QCWA
member or not.  Spread the word, at every radio club meeting you attend,
at every net you check into.

I want Leo to get hundreds, maybe even thousands of cards.

tnx es 73,

You are probably just far enough away from Fort Bragg to get some skip. I'm too
close and the Coast Range creates blockage as the signal leaves there and then

[IRCA] KDAC 1230 is alive and well

2009-02-02 Thread Bob Coomler
Being a bachelor for a long weekend, I hit the road today to see if I could get
any definition on my problem with my closest un-heard, KDAC 1230 in Fort Bragg,
CA. Being that they were on the way, I also made stops at KUKI 1400 Ukiah, KLLK
1250 Willits and KPMO 1300 Mendocino. KUKI is an un-interesting installation in
an un-interesting town (a van parked out in front of the studio still had
"Country KUKI" markings - they've been SS how long?). The KLLK site is three
unlit and unpainted towers (I didn't realize that was legal) slightly east of
town. No studio. KPMO is in the hills NE of the town of Mendocino with a
single tower. It may have been a studio at one time, but it is unmanned and the
building and site are rather seedy. As Patrick has mentioned, the KDAC building
is a Classic Radio Station. Not a KFI or WLW classic, but proportionally so
for a small town graveyarder. The site is not staffed. The tower was the
tallest I've ever seen for a GY
station. Some time in the recent past, there was a discussion here about tower
height and how it relates to groundwave and skywave, but I can't locate it.
Based on what I saw today, I'm wondering if the taller sticks don't indeed
favor groundwave (I should know better, but it escapes me)? Google Earth and
my own "perceptions" aside, there was no immediate horizon blockage. As I drove
south, it didn't take long for KDAC's signal to tank. BTW, Fort Bragg is a neat
coastal town. I'll be back. I have pictures of all four stations. If anyone is
interested, let me know.

[IRCA] Relighting the fire

2009-02-13 Thread Bob Coomler
Because of generally blah propagation and family health matters that have
required major attention lately, I haven't exactly been Mr. Mediumwave. The TA
blast of several weeks ago and my coastal trip last week did add some fuel, but
dusting off the Sony SRF-59 this evening was definitely gasoline on the fire.
I needed an AM radio right after I got home from work to see if KGO was aware
of a major traffic accident visible from my house. The only thing quickly
available was the infamous Sony ultralight. The first thing I heard after
turning it on (amazed the batteries still even worked) was a clear ID and
fishing program from KMCL-1240 in Donnelly, ID. I hadn't even heard them when I
lived in eastern Washington. I'm ready to play again.

[IRCA] Perseus system requirements

2009-06-08 Thread Bob Coomler

There is a very good chance that I will be a Perseus owner within several
months and I'm trying to get my software defined ducks in order. I am familiar
with the published system requirements, but there is always that leap between
"published" and "real world". For those of you folks with experience, will my
current computer setup of a 3 GHz Pentium 4, 504 MB RAM and (currently
available) 163 GB hard drive be adequate?

Many thanks for any input.

Dennis, I believe what he was talking about is just north of Highway 37 very
close to the Sonoma/Napa county line. I know there is still a two or three

Re: [IRCA] Vintage receiving station with loops

2009-07-27 Thread Bob Coomler

Dennis and all, it is Skaggs Island and is actually closer to the Sonoma/Solano
county line. Have a look here:

http://www.navycthistory.com/skaggs_decom_book.html

If you go to the home page for this site and wander around a bit, you will find
additional routes to go for Skaggs Island information and pictures (among many
other locations). It is an interesting site.

On Google Earth, punch in 38.189188N, 122.39592W. This shows the water tower
that is very visible from Highway 37 and what I believe is the last remaining
building (also visible from the highway).

If my memory and math are correct, that is something like 60,000 pounds of

[IRCA] Few goodies for sale

2009-09-21 Thread Bob Coomler
GE Superradio II (7-2885F). Insignificant wear marks. Antenna and tuning
mechanism are nice and solid.

K9AY (Steve Ratzlaff version) exterior antenna termination unit and interior
control unit. You'll need center support, loop wire, 4-conductor control cable
and coax. Used, with pleasing results. Includes Steve's hookup and use notes.

Radio Database International books. Tropical Band edition (1984) and full
shortwave edition (1986). These were the first edition predecessors to
Passport to World Band Radio.

All are "make offer". Granted, pretty chicken, but not otherwise sure how to
price these. If you buy our house in Cloverdale so we can expedite our move to
Tucson, I'll include all of the above n/c.

[IRCA] Computer clock

2007-12-05 Thread Bob Coomler
This is a little late for the annual UTC/EST/EDST
debate, but still a useful toy.

Qlock has a downloadable program for displaying
individual or multiple clocks with time throughout the
world along with sticky notes, alarms, exchange rates,
etc. The clock display size is changeable and other
than than being synced from a common source, the
clocks are independent of each other. They can be in
12 or 24 hour format and can show time, day and date
and will recognize DST (or not if you choose). I
currently have three (local, UTC and a varying
location) tucked into the upper right hand corner of
my display without interfering with whatever else I'm
looking at. There is a bare bones free version, the
most useful $14.95 version and a too expensive $89.95
version. No connection to these folks, just a happy
customer.

[IRCA] Hi, I'm Bob and I bought a SRF-59

2008-01-03 Thread Bob Coomler
I was fortunate enough to get a gift certificate for
Amazon this Christmas and I couldn't resist and
purchased a SRF-59 which came today. I put the battery
in and turned it on while fixing dinner. Just turning
it on with no tuning at all, the first thing I hear is
KGA in Spokane. We're not talking rare DX here, but
listening to an AM station almost 700 miles distant
with a solid signal in a RFI minefield of a kitchen is
not something I normally do. More to follow ... I'm
sure.

Huge here too at 0325 UTC about 75 miles north of San
Francisco. Less than an S-unit difference between
KDWN and flame thrower KGO.
