Re: [IRCA] Radio Shack/Terk Technology AM-1000 and Select-a-Tenna
Hi Dennis, I use the Terk with my ULR's pretty regularly. I used industrial strength hook and loop and the smaller ones ('59, '39, DT210V) attach right on the top of the loop, making the whole setup portable. The Terk really peaks the ULR's. Re: [IRCA] Radio Shack/Terk Technology AM-1000 and Select-a-Tenna
Thanks Kevin. First time I've seen the Tecsun loops, thanks for the link. Interesting indeed. I especially like the instructions: --- 1. Connect the AN-100 medium wave annular antenna to the audio modulator, car radio or medium wave line-in socket of BCL radio. If the radio without medium wave line-in socket, the annular antenna can be placed nearby the radio and closed to the radio's MW build-in antenna. 2. Set the radio at medium wave band. Then roll the tunable button on AN-100 medium wave annular antenna to receive the best frequency signal until the sound from broadcasting channel is clear and stable. 3. AN-100 medium wave annular antenna can perform it's best function by moving to the right direction. --- It looks like you will get either the AN-100 _or_ AN200 for your order...with potentially different ULR mounting options on each. Amazing price. 73, Bruce -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 10, 2008 10:45 PM To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America Subject: Re: [IRCA] Radio Shack/Terk Technology AM-1000 and Select-a-Tenna Hi Dennis: I own two Terk loops and recommend them as well. The Sony 7600GR sits in it like a cradle - Bruce has a great idea with heavy-duty velcro. Per http://www.radiointel.com/review-2loop.htm the Tertk and Select-A-Tenna are about the same, with the performance nod going to the Terk, which is also a lot cheaper. I prefer the looks of the Terk as well, although the now-discontinued RS model has the tuning cap on the outside, which I think would be more convenient. There are some VERY interesting looking Tecsun models on ebay - see http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TECSUN-AN-100-AN-200-TUNABLE-MW-AM-LOOP-ANTENNA_W0QQ itemZ110294274523QQcmdZViewItem or look for the Tecsun AN-100 and AN-200 models. These are also 9 inches in diameter, so their performance is likely to be the same at the Terk and Select-A-Tenna models. Select-A-Tenna also has an active antenna option that might be more flexible, but not sure they're worth as much as they are charging. 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Dennis, I use the Terk with my ULR's pretty regularly. Kevin I'm going over a recent tape of 1610 khz and have a mix of a couple of stations I've been unable to identfiy. One tape loop has a female voice, and talks about westbound traffic being reduced to one lane in certain hours. She says This is the highway advisory radio, but doesn't mention any location, other than what sounds like the 10th Avenue interchange, though I'm not at all sure on the name of the avenue.. She does give a call sign, but the best I could get out of that was W---569, and I can't find anything corresponding in the FCC database. The second has a male voice, and mentions road and weather information, but for most of the tape loop runs the NOAA weather. [IRCA] Battle of the ULR's: Sangean vs Sony (long)
. Frustrating Fifty-Nine; Tune-Tune-Tuning Two-Ten. Ease-of-use: SRF-59:C DT-210V:A The next category is a no-brainer; value for your DX dollar. OK, kind of. If superior audio quality and digital tuning (and memories) aren't that big a deal to you..if all you are looking for is the absolute cheapest way to get a terrifically sensitive and selective radio with supreme nulling capacity, then the SRF-59 is your machine. If, on the other hand, you don't mind spending more for a radio that sounds smooth as silk, has memories, digital readout, is very sensitive, and won't leave you curled up in a corner in the fetal position sucking your thumb calling out for yo momma in frustration, then the two-ten is an extremely good value. The feel of the radio in your hand reeks of quality. It is solid. The hammer is nailed into the board when you hear the smooth audio, and the nail goes clear through the board when you push the DBB (bass boost) button. Wow. Absolute Value: SRF-59:A DT-210V:B Value/Convenience/Features: SRF-59:C DT-210V:A End mini-shootout I'd like to add a big fat caveat here. Re: [IRCA] Revolutionary IC's Bring Revolutionary Fun in Small Radios
Gary, thanks for your enthusiasm and for educating us on the latest amazing teeny weeny radio technology. I'd like to pipe in because this has been a fun dialog and has prompted me to buy a few early Christmas gifts for myself, including an SRF-59, M37, Olympus WS300M recorder, and a CCrane twin coil ferrite loop antennna, to supplement the Sangean DT210V and Sangean DT300 already in the baby RX-stable. I've been impressed with the '210 and the '300 over the last couple of years, using them for ultra-lite DXing on my motorcycle tours. Of the mini-rigs, the two tops in sensitivity for me were the '59 and the '210; as such, I'll be commenting on those two only. Overall, with no external antenna, testing with fringe daytimers the winner in the sensitivity department has consistently been the '210, with the '59 down a couple ticks behind it. When listening last night, WBAP was clearly heard on both radios but in the deep fades, the '59 lost signal first and recovered it last. These radios really shine with a little help in the ferrite department, to the point of amazement; surpassing my 25 year old Super Radio II in overall sensitivity and selectivity and giving my Kenwood R2000 a run for its money. Lay the little radios on the ferrite pick-up and it's a whole different ballgame. Twist the knob on CC tuner and the frequency absolutely comes alive - these are real signals, not images. Now, I live quite a distance from any of the Boise locals (20+ miles) so your mileage may vary...but rest assured that you will hear serious domestic DX. The '59 is susceptable to overload when peaking the CC antenna - but, in fact, I've been unable to overload the front-end on the '210V. Pure signal. The Sangean DT210V is actually less susceptable to front-end overload than my Kenwood R2000. In terms of selectivity, the Q of the CC antenna is sharp enough to tighten up the desired listening frequency on both the '59 and the '210. Adjust the direction of the antenna element to null and peak as desired. I would love to test these rigs on the coast, especially with the '210's 9kc digital tuning. Alas, I have learned that my qth (at 3200 feet, with a 5200 foot mountain on the west side of my house) is not good at all for TP's...sigh. Unfortunately, I get audible TP signals only a handful of times a year. So, thank you Gary for piquing my interest, adding to my radio collection with modest $$ output, and enlightening me of the possibilities of UL-DXing. I am really looking forward to reading your Round Two of the mighty-mite shootout. And to all, have a very Merry Christmas, and may '08 bring you that exotic DX catch; be it domestic or from another corner of the world. 73, Bruce Bacon N7BWB Boise County, ID Sony's phenomenal 30-pin CXA1129N IC, the heart of the SRF-59, is deeply praised by the Chinese PhD rocket scientist Dr. Xin Feng on his _http://www.fixup.net_ (http://www.fixup.net) web site. One more - there is a Sangean DT-120V, which is the DT-180V minus the TV band. Might as well just by Sangean stock while you're at it... Sangean stock indeed! I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned the Sangean DT-210V. I've had mine for about a year - it's a little more expensive at around $40 (on Amazon) but it is a performer. However, when my good friend Nick H-P mentioned the IRCA Reprint and then updated it by mentioning the E1, which I own and the R-75, which I've used, I just had to drop my oar in the water. You might ask yourself why Guy Atkins, who owns both an e-1 and an R-75 and ,I who owned a Tentec RX-340 until two weeks ago, have both been using (almost exclusively) SDR Radios for the past year in Guy's case, a FlexRadio SDR-1000; in my case, a WinRadio 313e. Guy has also owned both a 7030 and an R8B in recent years. At the recent IRCA Convention, we jointly presented these two stunning receivers and allowed as how we cannot imagine ever going back to traditional receivers. If ya want the unqualified best DX receiver, at any price, you cannot leave out these two medium-priced wonders. Hi Mike, Congratulations on KOAI, persistence really pays off! Hope you are well. I sat on 1110 for a while last night, but just KBND and KFAB There was someone else there, but unable to ID them. Knowing how conditions change during the night, I phased KFAB down into the noise, set the timer and went to bed. When I checked the tape this afternoon I was really surprised, not to hear Alaska, but to hear 3 IDs for Hawaii! At 01:00MST and again at 02:00 I had two faint ID's for KAOI with no sign of KBND or KFAB. Then KBND took over the frequency for several hours. At 06:00MST I heard the following: KAOI-1110AM-Kihei and into CBS News. First time I've heard Hawaii here since 1982 when I logged KAIM. Really pleased about this.
