Re: [IRCA] AM LOGBOOK TO CLOSE

2013-07-01 Thread Doug Martin

Lee:
I am extremely grateful for your am logbook site. Without it, I would not
have an accurate list of stations in Braille. A magazine for the blind
called the Braille Technical Press published an am log in the late 60's
and, although it quickly became outdated, I desperately hung on to it for
about 30 years. What a joy it was to throw that away when I was able to
print out your data in Braille. I now keep it on a portable computer
Braille display, so I can look up stations while traveling. So, thank you
very much for facilitating my enjoyment of the hobby.

Re: [IRCA] Using PC Software for multiple timer recordings

2012-06-13 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. A good program with multiple timers and variable recording quality is
recall-pro from Sagebrush Inc. It costs $30, but it comes with a 30-day
free trial. And thirty days doesn't have to be consecutive days. That is,
if I use it today, and not again for a week, the next time I record is only
the second day of the trial period. The website is:

www.sagebrush.com and a link on my own file storage site is:
http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/5txdsv
I have been using various versions of this software for years.
You can also record from multiple inputs, e.g. my radio and an internet
stream.

Dave.. I record on 2 different computers. One using Skimmer Plus from
Broadcast Software International. Primarily used by broadcast stations for
air checks, it can be a bit pricey (399.00 for a single deck) My other
computer uses OMT's Logging software The nice thing about these is I can
log in from the web and playback the files...Great when I am on the road.

I hear that TOTAL RECORDER is good but i have never used it..and it is more
affordable

I recorded 1340 for A FULL year across the TOH. Yielded a bunch of new logs

I will most likely never be getting a Perseus but I do hope to take
advantage of timer recordings using a PC and audio software, for DX.
Hoping for Es on FM the other day, I recorded a two hour block of 92.7,
using Audacity. No skip.

Now I'm thinking about recording MW signals near the top of the hour. I
see that Audacity has a timer option but IIRC, it allows just one entry. I
want to schedule 12:58 am - 1:10, 1:58 - 2:10, 2:58 - 3:10 and so on. Does
anyone have any recommendations for audio software that allows such
multiple timer recordings?

Thanks - that may be a way to log some gy stations.

2012-01-27 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. Where can I get a copy of this article? When I was taking dsp
courses in grad school in the late 70's, some of our exam questions involved
writing programs to implement various strange forms of fft algorithms, such
as an algorithm for powers of three. Of course, the standard fft algorithm
obtains computational speed using arrays of 1024, 2048, etc. I thought the
speed of computation had been maximized and analyzed to death, so I'm very
interested in this article.

Fascinating article on how an MIT breakthrough could speed up Fast
Fourier Transforms (FFT) calculations by X10. For those of us interested
in

communications, FFT has made possible the creation of Software Defined
Radios (SDR), moonbounce communications with small antennas, and low
power, and
countless other innovations.

Imagine if you could work moonbounce at exciter power levels using a
small Yagi, or if you could purchase an SDR USB key that would offer
performance far
exceeding that of a Drake R8B? It's all within the realm of possibility
within the next few years.

[IRCA] A request: please give station locations in initial posts to this list

Hi. I am requesting that folks referencing a station by call letters, also
mention the city of license, at least in initial posts on a topic. Of course,
everyone knows where WWL is, etc. but I frequently encounter subjects like: I
just heard KXQJ for the first time. Although I've been dx-ing since the early
60's, I often have to make a mad dash to an out-of-date database to find out
where KXQJ is. I don't actually know if there is such a station; I probably
should have checked before sending this whine.

[IRCA] Finally something interesting in my noisy San Diego apartment

2011-10-10 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. Normally, there is so much interference from power lines and fluorescent
lights, that it's hard to enjoy KNX here in my apartment. Well, tonight 870
and 880 each have three or four stations coming in. For the first time this
season, KRVN is sounding like a local station. The select-a-tenna reveals two
not-yet-identified Spanish stations and some unfamiliar talk show all on 880.
870 has three unid's tonight. My poor GE Superradio II probably won't get much
sleep tonight.
These aren't tP's, and I can't expect wonderful dx as when I lived in Hawaii,
but it's nice to hear something other than just Ca, Nv and Ut.

Re: [IRCA] San Diego blackout last few hours, my DX attempts

2011-09-09 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. I also had a rare bit of fun during the San Diego power outage. Local
stations off the air helped, but so did not hearing noise from fluorescent
lights, dimmer switches, etc.
I heard Las Vegas on both 1100 and 1140, the second is new from here. KPNW
was in and out on 1120. May not sound like much, but it's rare here.
The only totally new catch for me was 890 kHz, Christian broadcasting for
the Central Coast, from Oroyo Grande. I never heard the call letters, but
several references to 890online.com was easy to confirm when the power came
back on.
This apartment complex in mid-city San Diego is the worst dx location I've
ever suffered thru.

Subject: [IRCA] San Diego blackout last few hours, my DX attempts

Earlier this afternoon there were a TON of AM stations in the San Diego /
Tijuana area off the air. They included:
760 KFMB (they're back on now, were at 5kW for several hours but sometime
between 10pm and 12am turned their 50kW rig back on)

910 KECR (back on now)
1000 KCEO (seems to still be off, but it's hard to tell as their night
signal is weak here anyway)

1030 XESDD (still off)
1040 KURS (still off, hearing spanish)
1130 KSDO (was broadcasting an unmodulated carrier for a few hours, but has
been off since)

1170 KCBQ (back on now)
1210 KPRZ (actually never noticed them off, just with an unmodulated carrier
checking periodically over several hours)

1240 KNSN (back on now)
1270 XEAZ (seem to be back with an unmodulated carrier)
1310 XEC (still off)
1390 XEKT (still off, am hearing what sounds like IBOC hiss)
1420 XEXX (back on now)
1450 KFSD (night signal would be in the jumble so I can't check them)
1630 XEUT (can't verify if they're back on now as they're normally off
anyway this time of the night)

1700 XEPE (back on with an unmodulated carrier)

Also, with the power lines being silent, it was an excellent opportunity to
use the utility ground wires as an inductively coupled longwire antenna.
Gave me a bit of a taste for what DXing is like for you guys on DXpeditions
in rural areas, albeit I was trying in the mid afternoon. :)

Some stations I heard on the Tecsun PL-606 in the mid afternoon (~3:50 to 5
pm) while many of the locals were off include:
840 KXNT North Las Vegas (with SAT, could have been beginnings of skip as it
was about 4:25pm when I checked them)

900 KALI West Covina (with the Select-A-Tenna
910 XEAO Mexicali (with SAT)
920 KPSI Palm Springs (with SAT, although barely audible barefoot)
980 KFWB Los Angeles (much improved signal)
990 KTMS Santa Barbara (with SAT; also audible barefoot)
1020 KTNQ Los Angeles (much-improved signal)
1050 KCAA Loma Linda (with SAT)
1100 unID (either Las Vegas or Phoenix - was ~5:34pm)
1110 KDIS Pasadena (barefoot, much better signal than normal)
1140 KNWQ Palm Springs (with SAT)
1150 KTLK Los Angeles (with SAT, may have been able to hear them barefoot
but I don't remember if I checked)

1180 KERN Wasco-Greenacres (with SAT)
1230 KXO El Centro, CA (with SAT)
1240 KEZY San Bernardino, CA (with SAT; barefoot had a faint trace)
1260 KMZT Beverly Hills (barefoot)
1300 KAZN Pasadena (barefoot faint, SAT definitely helped)
1310 possible KIQQ Barstow? (with SAT)
1390 KLTX Long Beach (barefoot)
1400 unID from W/NW approx (with SAT)
1430 KWST El Centro + KMRB San Gabriel mix (with SAT)
1440 KFNY Riverside (with SAT)
1450 KVEN Ventura (with SAT)
1570 KPRO Riverside (with SAT, could have been skip as it was 4:32pm)
1640 unID, sounded like a TIS but too weak to tell

Some of the above stations are audible anyway, but had much improved signals
due to my PL-606 not desensing nearly as much from the local stations. At
around 5:40 to 5:56 pm I checked reception combining the Select-A-Tenna with
the utility groundwire. Several stations had much-improved signals there.
For example, 640 KFI, 740 KBRT and 1070 KNX were all coming in as well as my
local 50kW stations 7 and 9 miles away (KFMB and KCBQ) normally are heard
barefoot. Also 1110 KDIS was as clear as some other locals, and normally
it's barely audible due to desense from locals on 1130 and 1170. On 1580,
KMIK was coming in quite strong (skip was well in force by 5:55pm),
indicating 75/25 on the PL-606. For comparison I took the radio away from
the antennas and got a 30/25 reading, implying an approximate 45 dB of gain
(although sometimes I suspect it's actually quite a bit more).

Later in the evening (around 8pm) in the kitchen with the SAT I heard:
1030 KTWO
1040 Spanish XEE?? 5kW radiovisa.com.mx? (heard parts of their TOH ID
but couldn't make everything out)

1120 gospel music (suspect KANN Roy, UT)
1130 unID sounded like news but I'm not sure, heard a KQNA call after a
George Noory promo when rechecking a few minutes later

1210 unID sounded like sports

[IRCA] MW stations on Guam

2011-07-20 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. Unfortunately, I can't read the pdf version of the Pacific Asian log, and
have so far not been able to get it in .txt or .rtf or .doc formats. I'm
blind, and my screen reader does not handle pdf's well.
Anyway, has anyone dx'ed from Guam? Are their any other stations besides KWAM,
KGUM, and KTWG? Also, what would a night time band scan bring up on a regular
basis? Mostly Philippines and China? What about other Pacific islands? I
lived in Hawaii 9 years, but was never able to log anything from Guam.
Probably my best catches were: Thailand on 1575, Philippines on 1134, WXLG-1224
in the Martial Islands, Kuwait--BBC on 1413, and WNAX from South Dakota. I
logged lots of 50kw stations from the east coast as well. But nothing from
Guam.
Finally, if anyone knows how I can get a text file of Bruce's PAL, please let
me know.

Re: [IRCA] OFF TOPIC: Honolulu Band Scan

2011-04-11 Thread Doug Martin
On Oahu, where I lived for nine years, I was surprised by how much
conditions were dictated by the topography. Around Waikiki, but away from
electrical interference, I was able to log Pacific Islands and Australia,
though they were almost never heard on the windward side of the island. On
the windward side, Kaneohe and Kahalu'u, I easily heard the U.S. west coast
and some of the Asian powerhouses, like Japan on 747 and 774 and the FEBC
station from South Korea. Before sunrise, on the windward side, I logged
over 20 Alaskans, which were never heard on the south coast. On the north
shore, I heard a bit of everything, because the mountains blocked signals
from the southeast. I never really listened on the east side of the island,
around Kahala and Hawaiikai, but Dale Park gave me dx reports from there,
hearing only the U.S. mainland and a few Pacific islands. He heard the
Marshall Islands on 1098, but the only time I heard this one was when I was
with Dale.
The best dx I ever had in Hawaii was from the center of the island Lana'i.
There was a motel there, and I was able to hear everything, from everywhere
from that highest point on Lana'i.

Aloha,
Doug Martin

Every time I'm in Hawaii, I always bring a souped-up ULR. I suspect that
the car radio you had was very feeble. 1610 in Honolulu is the traffic
advisory radio, and is usually on with a loop at good strength 24 hours a
day, and yet you didn't hear it. From Honolulu, I heard several stations
from other islands as well as the local Oahu stations. Last time there
was
in December. I also remember clearly hearing and recording every MW
station

while driving up Haleakala on Maui for the sunrise. No problems there at
all! One other observation I once made was that my balcony on Waikiki,
about a block from the ocean was only so-so, but taking the ULR down to
the

beach, especially at dusk was magic! Sure beats DXing in sub zero
temperatures up here! .Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

Re: [IRCA] OFF TOPIC: Honolulu Band Scan

2011-04-10 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. When I lived in Hawaii, 1978-87, I routinely heard the east coast and
the midwest on winter nights, especially Sunday nights. When Casper Wy went
off the air at midnight Monday morning, I often heard WBZ morning drive
time. I regularly heard WGN whenever KDWN would sign off Sunday nights.
Probably my best U.S. catch was on 570. I was listening to a Lakers game on
KLAC, when I heard, The weather for Southeastern South Dakota in the
immediate WNAX listening area ... and they were gone just that fast.
Similarly, on 1100, I heard WWWE Cleveland for about 30 seconds mixed with
KFAX.

From the mainland the two Hawaiians I have heard were 830 and 1040 kHz.
While living in Kaneohe, I won a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiak Ak, just
before sunrise. They asked me on the air if I could come by the station to
pick up my prize, and I told them where I was.
A fellow dx-er, Dale Park, and I sometimes listened on the beach near
Kaaawa, we heard CKLW-800. We had to explain to a cop what we were doing,
so we let him listen to CKLW.
There were some coastal regulars on graveyard frequencies, including Fort
Bragg Ca on 1230, Crescent City on 1240, Arcata on 1340, with 1400 and 1450
usually a jumble of stations. I was never able to hear anything on 1490,
due to KUMU on 1500.
My best foreign catches from Hawaii were: India on 1071 and 1134, Thailand
on 1575, the Philippines on 1143, and the BBC from Oman on 1413 kHz.

Thanks for the Honolulu band scan. It brings back fond dx memories.

Thanks for the nice bandscan from Honolulu! Quite a few call changes and
frequency swaps from how I remember it. I too logged KORL here back in the
day. 'Wish I were there right now. ms

Mixing business with pleasure. Playing with the Kia Sedona rental car
radio, while waiting for someone to come and meet me resulted in
expected stations. Was amazed that the only other island AMer heard was
from nearby Lihue, Kaui. I remember one time I was in Honolulu and could
hear the West Coast stations during Hawaii daytime. Think car radios were
better in those days, at least they had external antennas! Could be
crappy Sedona AM section of the radio.

Here is what I heard. Asterisk is the assumed station calls, since many
didn't give them, preferring AM 650 etc. All were from Honolulu or Oahu
with the exception of KUAI/720 from Eleele, Kauai.
Keep in mind this is not a scientific bandscan, just what I heard
sitting in my car at Ala Moana Park, Honolulu. No sign of KORL, wherever
they are. I was trying to hear the calls, a nostalgic listen since it was
my only Hawaiian station ever heard from Mainland, from New Jersey in the
60's and later from California in the 70's. Thought they were on some
frequency, but did not hear them. The Star Advertiser newspaper did not
list radio stations as they once did.

Using the two loops on the same frame will degrade the performance for
the MW portion and probably the SW portion as well. This is because the
proximity of the windings pretty much ensures that each will 'see' the
other and therefore the resulting patterns will be somewhat skewed and
 the nulls likely reduced.

I've used two air core MW loops in my basement shack - one 4' the other
2' for over 20 years and found that I needed to keep them about 4'
apart in order to minimize unwanted interaction.

720 Khz is more “open” tonight than normal. Even without the phaser, I can
clearly hear an oldies station under WGN. Well enough to log song titles
and times, but of course, WGN “cranks it up” during TOH and BOH breaks, so
I haven’t been able to catch an ID.

Any idea who the oldies format station on 720Khz might be? THANKS IN
ADVANCE!

Here in my apartment with horrible electrical noise, dx has been almost
nonexistent this season. How I have several questions regarding the x-band
stations. What are the most recent u.s. stations to come on the air?
Whatever happened to the proposed stations in Farmington NM, and
Harrisonburg Va? Also, whatever happened to the Tijuana station on 1630?

Happy birthday X-Band!! I never got a real logging of 1660 in New Jersey
here but their tell-tale carrier was very audible with it's odd fading
pattern. I remember the No Cal station was originally KXBT on 1630 before
it became KDIA on 1640.Miami Springs FL on 1700 was an easy catch here
in Southern CA for a bit as wellms

Wow! 15 years ago. I remember logging them just after they signed on. I
think KDIA CA was second, if I remember correctly.

Pasadena? It is off the air now, but used to be at the Pasadena
Presbyterian Church.

Re: [IRCA] Going to Hawaii and Oahu

2008-05-20 Thread doug martin
Hi. I believe Dale Park is the only active dx-er. I lived on Windward
Oahu from 1978-1987 and found the dx varied greatly depending on where you
were on the island. From the windward side of Oahu, Alaska, Western
Canada, and the U.S. mainland as far east as Chicago. But other islands,
e.g. tonga, samoa, fiji, were rare. From the south shore, these islands
were regulars, with no Alaskans present.
Probably my best catches were WBZ, KYW, Wcau, and WWWE-Cleveland. I had
other east coast stations, but just listed a few. In the other direction,
my best catches were from India on 1134 and Oman with a BBC relay on 1413 kHz.
My favorite was winning a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiac Ak. On the air,
I told them I couldn't come to the station to get my prize, and asked if
they would send it to me. Only then, after winning the contest did I tell
the announcer that I was in Hawaii.
My biggest disappointments were never getting WJR, WBAL, WWVA, WRVA, or
WBT. These states remained unlogged.

Aloha,

Hi. My 1993 KGLM in Montana was on 1400 kHz. Since KGLM FM is in
Anaconda, I'm wondering if Butte ever had a station on 1400, or possibly
the Deer Lodge station once used these call letters. Anybody know?
