Re: [IRCA] AM LOGBOOK TO CLOSE
Lee: I am extremely grateful for your am logbook site. Without it, I would not have an accurate list of stations in Braille. A magazine for the blind called the Braille Technical Press published an am log in the late 60's and, although it quickly became outdated, I desperately hung on to it for about 30 years. What a joy it was to throw that away when I was able to print out your data in Braille. I now keep it on a portable computer Braille display, so I can look up stations while traveling. So, thank you very much for facilitating my enjoyment of the hobby. Noise levels have gotten to the point where Dxing for me is a waste of time, not to mention the lack of anything worth listening to on this forgotten radio band. It's been a pleasure to provide station information for radio hobbyists since 1995, and I am glad I was able to provide it as a FREE service to DX'ers. But time marches on. Re: [IRCA] Using PC Software for multiple timer recordings
Hi. A good program with multiple timers and variable recording quality is recall-pro from Sagebrush Inc. It costs $30, but it comes with a 30-day free trial. And thirty days doesn't have to be consecutive days. That is, if I use it today, and not again for a week, the next time I record is only the second day of the trial period. The website is: www.sagebrush.com and a link on my own file storage site is: http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/5txdsv I have been using various versions of this software for years. You can also record from multiple inputs, e.g. my radio and an internet stream. Hi. Where can I get a copy of this article? Of course, the standard fft algorithm obtains computational speed using arrays of 1024, 2048, etc. I thought the speed of computation had been maximized and analyzed to death, so I'm very interested in this article. Re: [IRCA] San Diego blackout last few hours, my DX attempts
Hi. I also had a rare bit of fun during the San Diego power outage. Local stations off the air helped, but so did not hearing noise from fluorescent lights, dimmer switches, etc. I heard Las Vegas on both 1100 and 1140, the second is new from here. KPNW was in and out on 1120. May not sound like much, but it's rare here. The only totally new catch for me was 890 kHz, Christian broadcasting for the Central Coast, from Oroyo Grande. I never heard the call letters, but several references to 890online.com was easy to confirm when the power came back on. At around 5:40 to 5:56 pm I checked reception combining the Select-A-Tenna with the utility groundwire. Several stations had much-improved signals there. For example, 640 KFI, 740 KBRT and 1070 KNX were all coming in as well as my local 50kW stations 7 and 9 miles away (KFMB and KCBQ) normally are heard barefoot. Also 1110 KDIS was as clear as some other locals, and normally it's barely audible due to desense from locals on 1130 and 1170. On 1580, KMIK was coming in quite strong (skip was well in force by 5:55pm), indicating 75/25 on the PL-606. For comparison I took the radio away from the antennas and got a 30/25 reading, implying an approximate 45 dB of gain (although sometimes I suspect it's actually quite a bit more). Later in the evening (around 8pm) in the kitchen with the SAT I heard: 1030 KTWO 1040 Spanish XEE?? 5kW radiovisa.com.mx? (heard parts of their TOH ID but couldn't make everything out) 1120 gospel music (suspect KANN Roy, UT) 1130 unID sounded like news but I'm not sure, heard a KQNA call after a George Noory promo when rechecking a few minutes later 1210 unID sounded like sports

Re: [IRCA] OFF TOPIC: Honolulu Band Scan
On Oahu, where I lived for nine years, I was surprised by how much conditions were dictated by the topography. Around Waikiki, but away from electrical interference, I was able to log Pacific Islands and Australia, though they were almost never heard on the windward side of the island. On the windward side, Kaneohe and Kahalu'u, I easily heard the U.S. west coast and some of the Asian powerhouses, like Japan on 747 and 774 and the FEBC station from South Korea. Before sunrise, on the windward side, I logged over 20 Alaskans, which were never heard on the south coast. On the north shore, I heard a bit of everything, because the mountains blocked signals from the southeast. I never really listened on the east side of the island, around Kahala and Hawaiikai, but Dale Park gave me dx reports from there, hearing only the U.S. mainland and a few Pacific islands. He heard the Marshall Islands on 1098, but the only time I heard this one was when I was with Dale. The best dx I ever had in Hawaii was from the center of the island Lana'i. There was a motel there, and I was able to hear everything, from everywhere from that highest point on Lana'i. Re: [IRCA] OFF TOPIC: Honolulu Band Scan
Hi. When I lived in Hawaii, 1978-87, I routinely heard the east coast and the midwest on winter nights, especially Sunday nights. When Casper Wy went off the air at midnight Monday morning, I often heard WBZ morning drive time. I regularly heard WGN whenever KDWN would sign off Sunday nights. Probably my best U.S. catch was on 570. I was listening to a Lakers game on KLAC, when I heard, The weather for Southeastern South Dakota in the immediate WNAX listening area ... and they were gone just that fast. Similarly, on 1100, I heard WWWE Cleveland for about 30 seconds mixed with KFAX. From the mainland the two Hawaiians I have heard were 830 and 1040 kHz. While living in Kaneohe, I won a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiak Ak, just before sunrise. They asked me on the air if I could come by the station to pick up my prize, and I told them where I was. A fellow dx-er, Dale Park, and I sometimes listened on the beach near Kaaawa, we heard CKLW-800. We had to explain to a cop what we were doing, so we let him listen to CKLW. There were some coastal regulars on graveyard frequencies, including Fort Bragg Ca on 1230, Crescent City on 1240, Arcata on 1340, with 1400 and 1450 usually a jumble of stations. I was never able to hear anything on 1490, due to KUMU on 1500. My best foreign catches from Hawaii were: India on 1071 and 1134, Thailand on 1575, the Philippines on 1143, and the BBC from Oman on 1413 kHz. Thanks for the Honolulu band scan. I was trying to hear the calls, a nostalgic listen since it was my only Hawaiian station ever heard from Mainland, from New Jersey in the 60's and later from California in the 70's. Thought they were on some frequency, but did not hear them. This is because the proximity of the windings pretty much ensures that each will 'see' the other and therefore the resulting patterns will be somewhat skewed and the nulls likely reduced. I've used two air core MW loops in my basement shack - one 4' the other 2' for over 20 years and found that I needed to keep them about 4' apart in order to minimize unwanted interaction. Hi. I haven't been back east in awhile, but I think CHTN used to have an oldies format, and I heard them regularly in sw Pennsylvania. Well enough to log song titles and times, but of course, WGN “cranks it up” during TOH and BOH breaks, so I haven’t been able to catch an ID. Re: [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15
Here in my apartment with horrible electrical noise, dx has been almost nonexistent this season. How I have several questions regarding the x-band stations. What are the most recent u.s. stations to come on the air? Whatever happened to the proposed stations in Farmington NM, and Harrisonburg Va? Also, whatever happened to the Tijuana station on 1630? Hi. As far as the smallest licensed radio station, how about KPPC, Pasadena? It is off the air now, but used to be at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Re: [IRCA] Going to Hawaii and Oahu
Hi. I believe Dale Park is the only active dx-er. I lived on Windward Oahu from 1978-1987 and found the dx varied greatly depending on where you were on the island. From the windward side of Oahu, Alaska, Western Canada, and the U.S. mainland as far east as Chicago. But other islands, e.g. tonga, samoa, fiji, were rare. From the south shore, these islands were regulars, with no Alaskans present. Probably my best catches were WBZ, KYW, Wcau, and WWWE-Cleveland. I had other east coast stations, but just listed a few. In the other direction, my best catches were from India on 1134 and Oman with a BBC relay on 1413 kHz. My favorite was winning a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiac Ak. On the air, I told them I couldn't come to the station to get my prize, and asked if they would send it to me. Only then, after winning the contest did I tell the announcer that I was in Hawaii. My biggest disappointments were never getting WJR, WBAL, WWVA, WRVA, or WBT. These states remained unlogged. Re: [IRCA] Need help with old logging KGLM
Hi. My 1993 KGLM in Montana was on 1400 kHz. Since KGLM FM is in Anaconda, I'm wondering if Butte ever had a station on 1400, or possibly the Deer Lodge station once used these call letters. Anybody know? Thanks, Doug At 2, you wrote: On 5/5/07, doug martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi.
