Just a note to say SAC heard on November 5 at approximately 1500 local time on
the beach near Pensacola, FL with barefoot ultralight receiver (Sony SRF-T615).
Signal was excellent with no QSB.

Problem is that WCLD 1490 Cleveland MS is heard here (fair daytime

portable and a loop to null out WCLD. At least former semi-local KOTN

rare instance.

Re: [IRCA] Tom McCormick, active DXer in the 70s passed away

2012-06-16 Thread James Pogue
I am really sad to hear this Patrick. Tom and I met in W. Lafayette in 1973
or '74 just after I got out of the Navy. He was one of those incredible
DXers who could hear anything on a kitchen table radio. He helped me step up
to the next level of DXing, taught me about graveyard DXing, CPC tests,
helped me log a Montana graveyarder's CW ID, and was responsible for many,
many great stations in my log book and QSL collection. He used to come over
to my place on Monday mornings and we'd stay up all night with various
receivers, my Space Magnet and other gear. I lost touch with him in the late
70s when he moved away from Indiana. I'm truly sorry to hear of his fate.

Tom McCormick (West Lafayette IN) was on his way North into Alberta

remember Tom at IRCA conventions back in the early 70s. He was quite a
active DXer then and really a nice guy. In recent years, he was married

[IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?

2012-04-28 Thread James Pogue
Dear friends and list members,

I am having a terrible time here with interference that is ruining my
listening/hamming experience and am hoping someone can offer some practical
suggestions. Here's the situation.

The interference - basically a continuous raspy sound - seems to come up at
about 0830 local time here each day. It is often (but not always) quiet
before then. The problem usually persists until late at night, i.e. 2300
local or later. The AM broadcast band seems to be affected the least, 80
meters suffers a little, but every other band from 40 through 10 meters is
affected at different levels. I have tried some rudimentary methods to try
and isolate it but without success. I'm not even sure if it is atmospheric
(i.e., coming through my antenna) or through the AC line (mains). My antenna
is a G5RV Jr. in an inverted "V" configuration.

I am in an older house, 2-story in a residential neighborhood of Memphis, on
essentially a zero line lot. I can supply the exact address if anyone wants
to see the house on Google maps street views. There are renters upstairs.

I have limited equipment available for isolating the problem, and even less
technical knowledge. I'd really appreciate any suggestions for solving this
problem that now produces QRN at an S-9 level. I haven't called the local
power company yet, but don't hold out much hope for help from them. Thanks
very much.

[IRCA] Post-DX Test report from David Harris at KRPI

2012-02-27 Thread James Pogue
Please share this with anyone who may be interested. Also, please note
David's request for an SASE if you would like to receive a QSL card for the
DX Test. From David:

In late January, 2012 KRPI, AM 1550, was contacted by Jim Pogue from the
IRCA/NRC Broadcast Test Committee asking if the station would consider
conducting a DX test. My immediate reaction was YES! The management had no
objections so the date was set. Our live broadcasting ends at midnight when
we switch to pre-recorded programming, so it was easy to set up for the
test.

I made a recording of a brief announcement identifying the station and
alerting listeners that a test was in progress until 1:30 AM PST and that
normal programming would resume at that time.

A microcontroller was programmed to send Morse code at about 10 WPM. The
message was VVV VVV VVV de KRPI KRPI KRPI at 1000 Hz followed by the same
sequence at 1500 Hz.

Finally, an iPod was loaded with old time fiddle tunes. About 5 minutes
before the test was scheduled we switched to day power and pattern (50kW).
At 1:00 AM the voice recording was played, followed by the Morse code
segment, followed by a musical selection. That pattern was repeated every
five minutes or so for the next half hour. At least once the musical
selection was East Indian instead of a fiddle tune. In the middle of things
I received a call from a listener in California - I would have loved to
chat, but I had to be a bit abrupt since I had my hands full. After the
test ended I received another call from a listener in Nashville and had a
nice conversation.

So far I have heard directly from listeners in Alabama, Arizona, California,
Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee,
Manitoba, Ontario, and Japan.

We often receive reports from the AM DX enthusiasts on vacation in Lapland
with their extraordinary long wire antennas and NRD receivers but we rarely
hear from domestic DXers. This has been an exciting experience for me and
it has been my pleasure to participate in this DX test. All verified
reports accompanied by a SASE will receive our QSL card which will fit into
an ordinary business envelope.

Best regards to all,

David Harris

[IRCA] KRPI (barely) heard in Memphis

2012-02-26 Thread James Pogue
Thanks to J.D. Stephens' great ears, I managed to pull out a little of the
Morse code at the end of the KRPI DX Test. Dave Harris listened to the audio
file and confirmed it was them. That will make Washington State QSL #4 for
me, and my first since 1993. The first was KOMO on regular sked in 1975,
then KREW Sunnyside and KWNC Quincy both on DX Tests in 1993. Good luck to
everyone on the tests tonight.

Hello To All,

Heard the KRPI Test this morning with two different morse code segments
later on in the test. There was a slight hint of music peaking a bit at
times as well parallel to what was on their web feed.

At the time another Spanish speaking station with light music was also
weakly heard on the frequency.

Two ultralights were used, first the SRF-M37W with no success, then the
SRF-39FP which did manage to capture the code and music very weakly coming
through.

Receiver : SRF-39FP barefoot

1550 - KRPI Ferndale, Washington

ULR Station # 697 ULR State # 37

Thanks to the folks responsible for arranging the test

I remember logging this one previously as KOQT from Alberta when I lived
there

Hi Jim,

Yes, we are on track. The test will begin at 1:00 AM Pacific time on Sunday
Morning and last for half an hour. There will be a full minute of Morse
Code at the top of each five minute segment. The Morse Code will be VVV VVV
VVV de KRPI KRPI KRPI at 1000 Hz followed by the same sequence at 1500 Hz.
The speed is about 12 WPM. There will be an occasional announcement
indicating that the station is engaged in a test, and there will be a mix of
East Indian Music and Old Time Appalachian Fiddle Band Music.

We will be running day power (50kW) and day pattern during the test.

I am really looking forward to this event and hope it proves successful.

Any chance they could run night power and day pattern for a few minutes, or
better yet non-directional on day pattern for a few minutes during the
test?  They have a deep null almost right toward me in southern California,
and I have a semi-local Mexican on 1550, XEBG, which will make it almost
impossible if they just use day pattern with day power. :(

[IRCA] DX Tests update - PLEASE GIVE WIDEST POSSIBLE DISSEMINATION

I double-checked today to make sure we were on track all looks good for both

I also checked with RJ Harris at WTKT and WHP and he said everything is set

So what would be my best chance of logging them in south El Cajon (east of
San Diego), CA?  Looking at their pattern data and plot (as well including
the field strength values specified in the detailed results) and calculating
from that info, their ERP toward me on their day pattern appears to be about
375 watts, and on their night pattern looks like about 1.6 kW.  (I'm in a
deep null in their day pattern, and a not-quite-as-deep null in their night
pattern.)  To compound matters, I have a local 1 kW ND co-channel, XEBG,
about 17.5 miles from me that's only about 30° different from the opposite
(180°) bearing, and all my antennas have a figure 8 pickup pattern.  It *IS*
possible to get a deep null on a local station, but I have to position the
radio *JUST* right ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7fU5hIIuOY ) to do so
(which eliminates my ability to simultaneously specifically peak a desired
station unless it just happens to be on the right bearing).

Any chance they could run part of the test non-directional so I (as well as
others in California) would have a chance at logging them?  (I often hear
50kW ND KUAZ Tuscon on the channel when they're on around sunrise/sunset.)

KRPI's actual daytime antenna pattern can be viewed on the FCC website
http://transition.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/127961-231
02.pdf   One of the two main lobes is at 90 degrees, so it should get out
well to the east.

The local geo graphy skews the groundwave quite a bit, what with saltwater
to the west and the C ascade mountains to the east, which explains the
coverage shown on R adio L ocator.

Offhand I'd say your best bet would be the PL-606 with the
Select-a-tenna. The DSP might filter out the IBOC crud.

Good chance, probably not, some chance, always.

I'm using a DX-440 and homebrew variable geometry active ferrite. (Don't
know how else to describe it) The 440 is not known fro it's MW
performance and I'm still not quite satisfied with the antenna but I'm
working on it. A lot of fading in and out on 1590 tonight so if they're
running CW I might catch it even though I'm in the daytime null

2011-03-25 Thread James Pogue
Thanks Randy. It's good to know that if my 2010 gives up the ghost there is
something fairly comparable out there available. And the 7600 is a lot
cheaper than what I paid for the 2010 several decades ago!

Jim Pogue asks: Randy, how would you say the Sony ICF-7600GR compares with
the ICF-2010?

Unfortunately I've never owned a 2010 (though I played with one in a store
once!), but from all indications the 2010 has the superior synchronous
detector circuit (evidently Sony's never quite managed to duplicate its
excellent qualities in any other sync-equipped radio), but the 7600's works
well. The 7600, being quite a bit smaller, has a smaller built-in ferrite
bar antenna, thus it isn't quite the powerhouse the 2010 was/is in terms of
LW/MW reception. It's also not as sensitive on SW. Still, I can log TAs
here in Missouri on the 7600 when conditions are good. My biggest complaint
with it is the audio quality, which is mediocre at best on LW/MW/SW--stereo
FM thru headphones is fine. It only comes with one built-in IF bandwidth,
but it's actually pretty good for DX purposes. Its sideband reception is
fairly stable--the rotary thumbwheel for fine-tuning SSB is pretty touchy,
and gets more so with age, but you can manage pretty good ECSS reception.
I've always really!
  liked the 7600 overall.

Wow, what a thoroughly impressive list. Thanks to all who were involved
setting these up. I would really hope that these stations (especially WKVQ)
will be willing to do this again, perhaps when next season rolls around.

Code at 1:03, not strong.

Faint 1kHz tone is possibly from a TA and might not be there next hour.

Nothing else noted from WYTH through 1:10.
