Re: [IRCA] Tom McCormick, active DXer in the 70s passed away
I am really sad to hear this Patrick. Tom and I met in W. Lafayette in 1973 or '74 just after I got out of the Navy. He was one of those incredible DXers who could hear anything on a kitchen table radio. He helped me step up to the next level of DXing, taught me about graveyard DXing, CPC tests, helped me log a Montana graveyarder's CW ID, and was responsible for many, many great stations in my log book and QSL collection. He used to come over to my place on Monday mornings and we'd stay up all night with various receivers, my Space Magnet and other gear. I lost touch with him in the late 70s when he moved away from Indiana. [IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?
Dear friends and list members, I am having a terrible time here with interference that is ruining my listening/hamming experience and am hoping someone can offer some practical suggestions. Here's the situation. The interference - basically a continuous raspy sound - seems to come up at about 0830 local time here each day. It is often (but not always) quiet before then. The problem usually persists until late at night, i.e. 2300 local or later. The AM broadcast band seems to be affected the least, 80 meters suffers a little, but every other band from 40 through 10 meters is affected at different levels. I have tried some rudimentary methods to try and isolate it but without success. I'm not even sure if it is atmospheric (i.e., coming through my antenna) or through the AC line (mains). My antenna is a G5RV Jr. in an inverted "V" configuration. I am in an older house, 2-story in a residential neighborhood of Memphis, on essentially a zero line lot. I can supply the exact address if anyone wants to see the house on Google maps street views. There are renters upstairs. I have limited equipment available for isolating the problem, and even less technical knowledge. I'd really appreciate any suggestions for solving this problem that now produces QRN at an S-9 level. I haven't called the local power company yet, but don't hold out much hope for help from them. Thanks very much. [IRCA] Post-DX Test report from David Harris at KRPI
Please share this with anyone who may be interested. Also, please note David's request for an SASE if you would like to receive a QSL card for the DX Test. From David: In late January, 2012 KRPI, AM 1550, was contacted by Jim Pogue from the IRCA/NRC Broadcast Test Committee asking if the station would consider conducting a DX test. My immediate reaction was YES! The management had no objections so the date was set. Our live broadcasting ends at midnight when we switch to pre-recorded programming, so it was easy to set up for the test. I made a recording of a brief announcement identifying the station and alerting listeners that a test was in progress until 1:30 AM PST and that normal programming would resume at that time. A microcontroller was programmed to send Morse code at about 10 WPM. The message was VVV VVV VVV de KRPI KRPI KRPI at 1000 Hz followed by the same sequence at 1500 Hz. Finally, an iPod was loaded with old time fiddle tunes. About 5 minutes before the test was scheduled we switched to day power and pattern (50kW). At 1:00 AM the voice recording was played, followed by the Morse code segment, followed by a musical selection. That pattern was repeated every five minutes or so for the next half hour. At least once the musical selection was East Indian instead of a fiddle tune. In the middle of things I received a call from a listener in California - I would have loved to chat, but I had to be a bit abrupt since I had my hands full. After the test ended I received another call from a listener in Nashville and had a nice conversation. So far I have heard directly from listeners in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Manitoba, Ontario, and Japan. We often receive reports from the AM DX enthusiasts on vacation in Lapland with their extraordinary long wire antennas and NRD receivers but we rarely hear from domestic DXers. This has been an exciting experience for me and it has been my pleasure to participate in this DX test. All verified reports accompanied by a SASE will receive our QSL card which will fit into an ordinary business envelope. Looking at their pattern data and plot (as well including the field strength values specified in the detailed results) and calculating from that info, their ERP toward me on their day pattern appears to be about 375 watts, and on their night pattern looks like about 1.6 kW. (I'm in a deep null in their day pattern, and a not-quite-as-deep null in their night pattern.) To compound matters, I have a local 1 kW ND co-channel, XEBG, about 17.5 miles from me that's only about 30° different from the opposite (180°) bearing, and all my antennas have a figure 8 pickup pattern. It *IS* possible to get a deep null on a local station, but I have to position the radio *JUST* right ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7fU5hIIuOY ) to do so (which eliminates my ability to simultaneously specifically peak a desired station unless it just happens to be on the right bearing). Any chance they could run part of the test non-directional so I (as well as others in California) would have a chance at logging them? Unfortunately I've never owned a 2010 (though I played with one in a store once!), but from all indications the 2010 has the superior synchronous detector circuit (evidently Sony's never quite managed to duplicate its excellent qualities in any other sync-equipped radio), but the 7600's works well. The 7600, being quite a bit smaller, has a smaller built-in ferrite bar antenna, thus it isn't quite the powerhouse the 2010 was/is in terms of LW/MW reception. It's also not as sensitive on SW. Still, I can log TAs here in Missouri on the 7600 when conditions are good. My biggest complaint with it is the audio quality, which is mediocre at best on LW/MW/SW--stereo FM thru headphones is fine. It only comes with one built-in IF bandwidth, but it's actually pretty good for DX purposes. Its sideband reception is fairly stable--the rotary thumbwheel for fine-tuning SSB is pretty touchy, and gets more so with age, but you can manage pretty good ECSS reception. I've always really! liked the 7600 overall.
