Re: [IRCA] new log WEEF 1430

I would guess they were on day power because I heard them 0859 EST.
Currently 0800 to 0900 is when local conditions stabilize and I can get
solid nulls on nearby stations. It's amazing that weak signals like this
can sometimes be heard over higher powered closer stations on the same
frequency. Conditions to the west have been excellent this season. Jim

You were wondering why you could get WHBG which is to your SW with a DKAZ
aimed NW but note that you were phasing against a vertical and had to
reduce gain slightly for the DKAZ to phase WDRC. Therefore, while the DKAZ
aimed NW would lose about 10 dB off the side aimed SW, note that the
vertical is omni and would pick up plenty of WHBG which does get out quite
well at sunset.

Thanks Kaz. I was using a W by N oriented DKAZ and a 30' vertical. I had
the gain reduced slightly on the DKAZ. I have gotten new stations from
Wisc. Ohio, and PA. on 1360 in the past few months using this setup at
sunrise to 0900. Now sunset is looking pretty good. As soon as the weather
cooperates I am going to reconfigure my remote antenna box so the DKAZ will
be the primary antenna and be able to switch between 6 others instead of
just the vertical for phasing. Jim

Re: [IRCA] IRCA Digest, Vol 127, Issue 37

2014-11-13 Thread Jim Balle
Hi Gary,on the phaser I use a 35' vertical antenna for one antenna and it
is fed directly to the phaser . The other antenna comes from a control box
and it is a combination of 1 to 3 antennas switched in or out to minimize
the station I want to phase. Then it's just a matter of tweaking the phaser
controls to reduce the iboc noise. The 6 antennas connect to a remote
switch out in the tool shed and I can combine up to 3 of them with the
control box next to the radio. The antennas are a 300' ground level loop, a
PAR end fed inverted L, a vertical 150' loop fed with 450 ohm twin lead
oriented N x S, a NW oriented double KAZ, a 120' W x N sloping L, and a
200' vertical loop oriented SE x NW. None of the antennas are above being
reconfigured if the mood strikes me. Most of this was achieved by trial and
error and not based on any theory except to properly match each antenna to
the feed line using home made torroid baluns. Being retired I have plenty
of time to work on them and adjust and repair them as necessary. Hope that
helps, Jim

I have been hearing what sounds like American English on 1710 (thats how
weak the signal is, only a few words here and there)

The funny thing is, it seems to be there only at 0500UTC / GMT. I even
recorded 0430 and 0530 today, and find there is no trace. Maybe I should
record an hour around that time.

0500 is first light here, so of course it will be the peak time, but I
did hear the TIS thing from NJ a few times throughout the night some
months ago.

What I seem to be hearing is an OM and YL alternating, and sometimes
some kind of music. I don't seem to have found any words of significance

I looked last night for the MA Perseus server, but it wasn't on.

At 0300 WABH is audible here but playing back Perseus the noise
continues in momentary WABH silences, so noise isn't apparently linked
to volume levels.

WBZ-1030 has no IBOC tonight, which is quite unusual. It might indicate
they're on their backup transmitter... they seem a little weaker than
usual, but it's hard to say for sure. Folks in the northeast might want
to pay some attention to 1020 and 1040 tonight...

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your assessment of the G8 performance, and sorry that you were
less than satisfied..

The heterodynes you mention (from 1400- 1430 kHz) are a congenital issue
in the G8/ PL-300WT models, and show up in all these units. As such,
ordering a replacement model from Amazon will not solve the problem. Most
owners
seem to tolerate this quirk, but it's a subjective issue that bothers some
DXers more than others.

On the other hand, your new G8 should have much better low-band AM
sensitivity than an Eton E100, assuming that the G8 is properly aligned.
The E100
has a deserved reputation for being rather deaf on the low AM band, and the
G8 will always outperform it when both units are properly aligned. An AM
alignment instruction file for the G8/ PL-300WT models has been uploaded to
the Yahoo Ultralightdx file section, if you would like to optimize the
sensitivity in your model. Or, if you prefer, you can send your radio here
for a
free AM alignment.

[IRCA] Grundig G8 Performance

2009-07-07 Thread jim balle
I received a new G8 the other day and immediately did a side by side
comparison to my Eton E100. The results were both surprising and
disappointing. The E100 seemed to be the equal of the G8 on all frequencies
for sensitivity and audio fidelity. Also the G8 had a noticeable heterodyne
on 1400 through 1430 khz. It's possible that the G8 I have needs some
tweaking with the antenna coil, but the heterodyne issue bothered me more. I
may return it to Amazon and get a replacement as I do want to experiment
with it as a DX radio. Jim
