Re: [IRCA] Newfoundland too

2013-11-08 Thread Jim Renfrew
High winds diverted John and I to Deer Lake after a failed landing attempt at
St Johns. Arriving four hours later at St Johns left little time for auto
travel and purchase of provisions. So Jean got a short wire from the house to
the beach set up and that's all til tomorrow. Not much unusual heard. I'm
whipped after waking up at 1:45 am to get to Toronto, so off to sleep. Zzzzz.

[IRCA] FEB 27 0500-0600z feeding frenzy

2013-02-28 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

Hi everyone, sorry for the multiple posts last
night.  All my roadrunner
posts were proliferating as endless duplicate
messages, and I still can't
stop it.  Roadrunner says, "not us", and
Microsoft (Outlook) says "we no
longer service XP owners (but we'll solve it
for you for $99)", so I'm using
Yahoo for the moment.  I get e-mail fine,
just can't send it out on
Roadrunner.

This was an incredible night,
and lot of might-have-beens because my Perseus
won't function with my new
Windows 7 laptop.  So these loggings were done
the old fashioned way, by
spinning the dial.

FEB 27

0510z    On getting Barry's tip
(thanks!), and with my Kaz coax retrieved
from the snow piles earlier in the
day a quick run through the top of the
band gave 1557 France (relog), 1575 I
initially called this "Italy", but now
I'm not so sure with such a pipeline
into Spain.  There were two stations on
1575 but when I went back there was
barely anything.  I've previously logged
Spain and Italy on 1575.  1584 also
had a signal - possibly much wanted
Radio Ole, but on my return there wasn't
much there.

0513z    1521    SPAIN    SER    Castello    "Cadena SER" ID,
// to web
audio vis Delicast.  I went right past this the first time
figuring it was
the usual Saudi, and even reported it as such last night.
But when I passed
it by again it was Spanish, and simply smashing through
WWKB 1520 in nearby
Buffalo.  I don't expect to see this one any time soon.
NEW.

0515z    1602    SPAIN    Radio Vitoria, Vitoria    SER, I figured,
but not
//, so I found Radio Vitoria on Delicast, and voila, that was it,
about ten
seconds delayed on the web audio.  The TA pipeline seems aimed at
Baque
country and Galicia.  Very good signal.  NEW.

0517z    1476
SPAIN    Euzkadi Irratia    Donosti    Man and woman
speaking, electronic
music at tune-in, // to web audio via Delicast.  I
listened to this one the
most and noted a "Euzkadi Irratia Noticias" after
4+1 pips at 0600.  While
it sounded Spanish in its cadences, it was odd, so
most likely Basque
language or "Basquish" that I was hearing.  NEW.

0025    1539    SPAIN
SER    Manresa and Elx synchros    // to web audio
via Delicast, slight echo
noted, so I heard both of them, I suppose, but I
seem to recall from
Newfoundland that Elx has been noted with separate
programming - though this
recollection may be be way out of date.   NEW.

0034z    1485    SPAIN
SER    synchros    // web audio via Delicast.
Very weak.
NEW.

0035z    1413    SPAIN    RNE    synchros    presumed, very weak,
previously
logged..

0036z    1386    SPAIN    Euzkadi Irratia
Bilbao    // 1476, though much
weaker.  NEW.

0038z    1314
SPAIN    RNE    synchros    // RNE web audio via Delicast.
NEW.

0039z    1287    SPAIN    SER    synchros    // 1521.
NEW.

0039z    1206    FRANCE    noted in passing, relog.

0040z
1152    SPAIN    RNE    synchros    Spanish noted in passing,
relog.

0041z    1143    SPAIN    COPE    synchros    Spanish // web
audio via
Delicast and 1134.  NEW.

0041z    1134    SPAIN    COPE
synchros    Spanish // web audio via
Delicast and 1143,
relog.

0044z    1107    SPAIN    RNE    synchros    Spanish, fairly
strong, none of
the off-channel het heard in recent years,
relog.

0045z    1089    UK    TalkSPort    synchros
weak

0045z    999    SPAIN    COPE    Madrid    Spanish, COPE presumed,
relog so
I moved on.

0045z    990    UNID    SPAIN?    My local 990
was missing or beaten down by
Montreal and possibly Spain.

Not much
else to dig into after this.  But nine new TAs in one night is a
unique
experience here.  Though every one of these is a pest in
Newfoundland!

Notable in their absence:  909, 855 from Spain, and 945
and 1377 from
France.  I guess the best stuff was at the upper range.  I
still can't get
over the powerful signal on 1521.  Not only do I have WWKB
1520, but WASB
1590 (I can see their tower light from my house) puts out a
nasty spur
around 1521.

Heard in Albany, NY too, though I did not log this because some digging

determine if I was hearing Rockford or Warren, OH, so it went unlogged.

Didn't hurt to try Paul, and thanks for your dedication to the hobby.
Business must be good for them to be unpleasant about it, particularly to
someone in the business.

Next kick at the can, I wonder what a 30 second spot costs at 2am on a
non-brokered station, particularly for a non-profit? A quickie IRCA
information ad with Morse IDs?I sympathize with they sentiment that
one shouldn't have to pay for a DX test, but it shouldn't come as news
that stations don't owe DXers anything, and maybe some of us geezers (not
Paul, I know) have a dime or two left at the end of the month.

best wishes,

DX'ers. They are a brokered/paid programming station so I was going to be
happy if I got 60 seconds of morse code at at the top of the hour at 2am

The GM said no, so I did something I've never ever ever done before... I
offered to buy, out of my own pocket, 15 minutes of time on a one time

The station still said no.. and wasn't terribly pleasant about it.

Not much in the way of TA audio at the moment, with the exception of Radio
Liberty on 864 from Armenia, which was very clear shortly after 0200.
Listed as in Turkmen, and is //7390, though the MW signal was much better!
Did hear Iran on 702 nicely earlier, and it's still producing some audio
now at 0215.Also audio on 693 (UK) and bits on 873, but the upper end
of the dial doesn't seem to be doing much.

Hi Guys:

This is our 2nd week here in Hawaii. The first week was spent in Maui,
where the DX Conditions were very NOISY!! Not much could be heard from the
Condo we were in due to severe QRN..and I Was too tired to crawl down
to the Beach at night!!

As of yesterday we are now on the Island of Kauai at the Point at Poipu,
in a ground level Condo right on the Beach and things are much better here
QRN Wise. I can actually hear Radio Stations here!!!

Here's the results of some casual listening I did last
nightnothing too exciting, but these are all over 2000 miles I
believe. I don't have good references here with me so some of this stuff
had to be looked up online to confirm what I as hearing. I've never DX'd
from this part of the world beforeso I don't know if these are good
catches...or just routine. Considering they are on an Ultralight SONY
SRF-T615 Barefoothopefully they are decent catches.

I'm typing this on a small keyboard...so please pardon any big fingered
typos

No attempt made for DU/Asian or Pacific stuff yet...Trying to squeeze
a lot of activities into a 24 hour day is keeping me busy enough.

temps are 83 to 85 every day and very SUNNY...I may have to move
here I think this is a little better than shovelling snow in a
SNOWMOBILE Suit!!! No Bugs here at this time of year...and the Humidity is
lowmy kinda place.

As far as the first Ultralight radio reception of India in North America,
we heard through the grapevine that Chuck H. managed to hear 1566-India on
his Sony SRF-T615 during a Newfie DXpedition in November of 2008, but the

Definitely heard in Newfoundland in 2011, and perhaps earlier than that.
In
2011 it was markedly stronger - a new transmitter I believe. Several
dozen

other Indians heard from there, though I did better in 2010 as I recall.

Of course, Sylvain's reception is all the more remarkable because he is
inland, while in Newfoundland we were right on the ocean in Cappahayden.
Allen is also well-situated for this kind of reception.

The Perseus makes it possible to pick them off at sign-on time. 0020 UTC
is

a good time to aim for, with a distictive sign-on tune.

The first one we logged was 1566 many years ago, and it was entertaining
to
watch Dave Clark dance around the room with joy. (He was widely known as
an
Indian shortwave expert). We even proposed putting up a brass plaque on
the

grounds of the now torn-down DX Inn to mark the event. There are plaques
like this in various places around Newfoundland for first Transatlantic
flights, radio transmissions, undersea cable, etc. So why not India?

1071 is not so hard now that CBA has gone to FM, and there's not a lot of
stuff on the air in Europe either.

Well-done, Sylvain!

The only drawback is that their sound was muffled/distorted. A pity

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] India on 1071

2013-01-10 Thread Jim Renfrew
Definitely heard in Newfoundland in 2011, and perhaps earlier than that. In
2011 it was markedly stronger - a new transmitter I believe. Several dozen
other Indians heard from there, though I did better in 2010 as I recall.

Of course, Sylvain's reception is all the more remarkable because he is
inland, while in Newfoundland we were right on the ocean in Cappahayden.
Allen is also well-situated for this kind of reception.

The Perseus makes it possible to pick them off at sign-on time. 0020 UTC is
a good time to aim for, with a distictive sign-on tune.

The first one we logged was 1566 many years ago, and it was entertaining to
watch Dave Clark dance around the room with joy. (He was widely known as an
Indian shortwave expert). We even proposed putting up a brass plaque on the
grounds of the now torn-down DX Inn to mark the event.

While you guys are getting TAs on the West Coast, I've just heard my
irst Indian at 01:32 UTC on 1071 Khz. I have been waiting at this one
or a while now and fortunately, I heard it for the first time at
ransmitter sunrise.
The only drawback is that their sound was muffled/distorted. A pity
ecause the signal strength was fair enoughfor quality reception:

Hopefully, there should be some other opportunities...

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] WWKB 1520

2013-01-07 Thread Jim Renfrew
When I got out on the road a little later, away from WASB (whose red antenna
light I can see from my house), WWKB was on the air, but at what appeared to
be much reduced strength. This was confirmed around 1:15 PM when I began to
hear someone toggling between the weak signal to a stronger one. The
hamsters powering the transmitter on a lunch break? At 10 PM, seems to be
full strength.

Re: [IRCA] WDCZ-990 Buffalo

2013-01-01 Thread Jim Renfrew
When I lived in Rochester this one was impossible to hear. I could get it
on the car radio almost to the inner suburbs, but then it would get hammered
by 950 and 990. It's not very easy to hear in Holley, either, the worst
Buffalo signal, and I'm only about 40 miles away from it. Must have a
convoluted pattern.

Not sure what WDCZ is looking for with an AM signal? Their FM signal gets
out just fine, not that I ever listen to it. .

Hello To All,

With good conditions here in the North Atlantic this evening, combined
with secondary and third tier stations audible on a lot of frequencies.

On 810 with a mix of BBC Scotland, WGY in NY and CJVA in New Brunswick
alternating off and on through the evening, also heard was a fourth signal
floating up out of the mix for a short time which sounded like Newstalk
810 KGO in Frisco.

Will keep further watch and future post if anything there.

Absolute insanity... and it gives me the feeling that nobody currently
running/working for Vatican Radio has a clue about DXing, reception
reports, QSLing, etc.--or cares any longer. This sounds very much like
what you experienced with Danmarks Radio (i.e. clearing out their stock of
QSL cards just to get rid of them)--albeit on a more epic scale. But at
least you GOT a reply! Back in 1995 after my one and only reception of
Vatican-1611, I sent a nice taped report... and a follow-up... and another
follow-up... and never heard word one from them.

Yes, this is one for the books!

I requested a QSL by e-mail from Radio Vaticana for a reception of the
Madagascar relay. In today's mail I got a stack of 26 QSLs, and a nice
note from Father Moses Hamungole thanking me from my report.
Unfortunately not even one of the 26 QSLs was actually filled out. This
has got to be a record of some kind for QSLing futility - 26 QSLs in one
package, but not one counts!

I've had as many as four blanks arrive in one letter from a station (Radio
Denmark when it was clearing out of English broasdcasting), but 26 is
beyond crazy.

24 of those QSL cards are a picture of Ratzinger, not a guy shown much

Hello To All,

An interesting reception occuring early this morning at 4:42 AM Local time ,
I heard the George Noory show Coast to Coast AM airing on 1580 under usually
heard CKDO in Oshawa, Ontario. The signal wasn't in long enough to catch
other details or an ID.

When I looked up any affiliates of the show on 1580 . Two results only, both
in the east. Further investigation revealed results for the those stations
possible as follows:

1580 - WGYM - Hamonton, New Jersey 1000 watts days, a whopping 7 watts
nights

1580 - WCCF - Punta Gorda, Florida 1.250 kw days , 110 watts nights

It's likely the New Jersey station , much closer , however Florida stations
drift in here quite often in the early mornings. It could be one of the two
on daytime power as well. I'll keep an ear on that frequency in the next few
days in hopes of catching it again with more details hopefully.

Good DX

Nice job on this everyone. It is a thrill to get China from North America.
We had a nice run of them around that same time in 2009 I think it was, and
then more of them in 2010. From Cappahayden Newfoundland, of course.

Yee hawthank you Sylvain. I checked my PEI
recording for the same time and date, and sure
enough, there is CRI oriental stringed music
leading up to the chimes and fanfare on the hour,
followed by the lady in Russian that you
recorded. Mine is not nearly as clear, as it is
under the news on the Saudi station.

No Beverage for us though, this was on a corner
fed loop using a Wellbrook FLG100LN preamplifier.

You can bet I'll be checking a few other of your
catches for that evening. Thanks again.

Re: [IRCA] PEI DXing. was: Re: Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-31

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Renfrew
In Newfoundland, the reach to East Asia is tough. The lay of the land is
such that our antennas aim NE to Europe, and SE to Brazil. In 2010 we did
well to East Asia (China, N. Korea, S. Korea, Russia, Taiwan and Japan on
the Euro wire because the arctic is in darkness, but that also means the
path is prone to auroral conditions. Those receptions appear about
0930-1030z in mid-November. We've also logged China in the evening, like
2300 or so, and that uses the darkness over Europe as sunrise approaches in
East Asia. We have also had Taiwan and Korea that same way, Sri Lanka, and
lots of India. I think Jean also got Thailand once. I don't believe we've
had Japan that way.

I don't believe we will have a Newfoundland team this fall, except for Allen
in residence there, but I am still going through Perseus recordings from
2010 and 2011, so still the vicarious thrill.

I think PEI has the inside edge to a lot of DX, Gary. We were on the
northern shore of Howe Bay, with a good water path to South America, but in
fact there was a bit of a land path to much of northern Europe and the
Middle East, and certainly to Asia, yet heard some amazing signals. I
suspect that mucky red soil is fairly conductive, but still. And the
antennas used were corner fed loops and an ALA100, suburban yard antennas.

About 3 years ago Brent became the only East Coast DXer (that I'm aware
of) to receive Asiatic TP's on an Ultralight radio, managing to hear a
couple of Japanese NHK stations on his simple Sony SRF-59 and Radio Shack

TP reception :-)

After yesterday's QSL from Iran, today's mail brought a QSL for Radio

two years ago, October 11, 2010. I sent a follow-up in July, 2012 to Radio

to work. They sent a Radio Romania International QSL (with correct
information written in) and also sent back my prepared card signed. Also
included: an RRI sticker, a 2012 calendar, and attractive stamps on the
letter itself.

A cover letter was signed by Lacramioara Simion and Diana Vijeu,
Coordinators of the English Service. The address is:

This does not add to my MW Country verified #58 total, because they sent me

Chesapeake Bay. Have only gone through TOH Perseus recordings from a
couple of periods using an extended DKAZ antenna aimed at 150 deg.

Audio sample logbook here: <http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_BH2.php>

Highlights; Nicaragua on 720, Guatemala on 1570, 4 Brazilians and, so far,
14 Colombians and 8 Puerto Ricans.

Not quite as exciting as last trip:

We have a program on Sunday Nights and at 11 O'clock each Sunday night we
still today play the traditional Jimmy Capps opening theme song (a song
recorded by Eddie Howard entitled My Best to You) and still have Jimmy's
voice on the air.

As a tribute to Capps, the 11 PM hour of the WPTF Hall of Fame features
nothing but love songs, and begins each week with the original theme sound
in the voice of Jimmy Capps. From time to time the program features some
of the readings of poetry by Jimmy Capps from the WPTF archives.

Hi All,

I was very happy when I received the following e-verification in
Spanishafter filling Radio Colonia's contactform and providing anaudio file
link.

Quoted text:

**/(Oct 9th 2012)/**

/Thisemail confirm that in the clip I've sent, the station heard was indeed
CW1 Radio Colonia, AM 550 from Colonia del Sacramento, URUGUAY. That
concurred with my thoughts first for the accent typical from the /"C//ono
Sur" /countries (at least Argentina and Chile) and second, for the reference
to /"Capital Federal" /which fits the Buenos Aires area, facing Colonia del
Sacramento, 40 km on the other side of the /"Rio de la Plata" /estuary.

The clip was extracted from the same .wav recording than the one where I
heard Argentina last Summer. It surely worth the effort digging a little
more and happily, add this new country to my total

One year in Newfoundland major aurora completely wiped out Europe, leaving
nothing but Algeria and the Canaries audible, but it was a rare opprotunity

Hmmm..KGO...I've tried and tried and no luck..not even on the SSS session
where I had KCBS poke thru KBRT for a bit.

OK I reset my alarm to make sure that I am ready for 1100 tomorrow (was
planning 1115 for DU's). I've not seeing KGO logged this far east in
decades. Re; 1098, the path to Marshall Islands is higher latidude than DU
stuff and should benifit from today's improving high lat cx. A few years
ago in winter I sometimes had ripping hets on 1100 at my sunrise on a
bearfoot 2010.

I've had weak audio on the Phased BOGs a couple times, but you have to
catch it when they don't s/off early and this time of the year or earlier
since WTAM is the strongest eastern skip signal here and even with phasing
I can't reliably crush it. Of course, now we have MN's The Flag to also
QRM plus a stn near Green Bay.

Logs from West Michigan around 1100 UTC this morning:

702 with strong carrier and threshold audio under WLW's slop.

738 with muffled audio lasting for about five minutes, presumed Tahiti.
Better than yesterday morning, but not comparable to the elevated
conditions on the 6th.

The usual carriers were noted on the low band plus a few news ones that
I haven't noticed before up high:

1017 respectable carrier, no audio, but I'll be keeping an eye on it in
the future.

1035 weak carrier

1098 weak carrier

Domestic stuff:

560 KLZ Denver, CO. - very poor under WIND but a clear
"560thesource.com" was heard along with some mentions of Colorado. New
log.

600 KCOL Wellington, CO. - heard again all alone on the channel, IDs and
into FOX News at TOH., relog.

810 KGO San Francisco, CA. with local traffic and weather report, nice
clear TOH ID. WDMP not present for once at during this time. New log!

Scott wants more detail!
Seems like I counted call changes when I said I had 14 from Vermont. It's
actually 10 stations. Wikipedia lists 18 stations on the air. So only 56%
received. Compiling stats on New York will be a much bigger project!

Vermont:

Have

970WHWBRutland (no longer on the air)

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Closing in on WAV?

2012-09-04 Thread Jim Renfrew

Haha - I have to WORK for every one of those tough receptions!

Barry, very impressive - all ON? Wow, a big piece of terrirtory. Only
missing three in NY? Now I'm tempted to measure that. Probably missing a
bunch of graveyarders.

Jim Renfrew

Shouldn't that be HAV (or HAVT?), since "working" implies a two-way link?
Anyway, this topic is an interesting one to me, since I've tried to
"complete" some nearby states and provinces on the AM band. I did manage
to
complete VT a few years back, and I've also heard all of the AM stations
in
RI. I'm missing one station in NH, two each in CT and ME, and three each
in

MA and NY. On the Canuck side of the border, I've completed ON and PE
(before their AM station count went to zero), and am missing one each in
QC,

NB and NS.

Due to steadily rising noise levels, it's unlikely that I'll improve on
these

stats. :-(

Barry

[IRCA] Closing in on WAV?

2012-09-03 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

SEP 32358 edt1490VTMiddlebury"Cruisin 93.7" = Addison VT
FM station; NEW

It took a long time to get my first VT station, and it finally turned up as
1390 WDOT Burlington at 9:55 in the morning in 1987. That was 13 years
after I started DXing in Rochester, and how long it took to receive a signal
from an adjacent state. WFAD is now VT #14. Interestingly, VT would
probably be my best shot at logging an entire state, since it looks like
there are only 20 MW stations there. WAV - worked all Vermont!

Re: [IRCA] Newfoundland Medium Wave Logs Aug 28 - 31

2012-08-31 Thread Jim Renfrew
If the 1590 was demonstrating horrible modulation, and slightly off
frequency, then it might very well be WASB Borckport NY - I can see their
tower from my front porch, and at night, too, with the red light on their
tower. What a useless station. Lately they have been dominating 1520 (sic)
when I drive through Brockport.

Re: [IRCA] [Tvfmdx] How do you keep track of your DX Loggings for AM, FM etc?

2012-08-18 Thread Jim Renfrew
I bought them thirty years ago at a a stationery shop in Rochester that no
longer exists. The MW map has long ago fragmented into four sections and is
quite dog-eared. The MW map is centered on Rochester and spreads outward.
I've had to draw Canadian county lines by freehand north of the border. The
FM map hs a big blotch centered on Rochester, and then a lot of white space
until the skip zone is reached.

US county maps are available on line, for sale I think, and I suppose you
could cobble one together printing sections available on-line to make one
large map-sized sheet. On an 8.5 x 11 sheet it would be too small.

Another approach to this is grid squares, and these maps are availabel from
the AARL.

It's nice to see such detailed record keeping. Where did you come across
your county map?

for AM, FM etc?

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

I use Excel spreadsheets for LW, MW, FM, TV and SW. When I shifted to
Excel

for my MW logs, it was many weeks of typing entries.

Since I have lived in this area since 1976 there is no need to note my
listening location. My logbooks previous to 1976 in other locations were
handwritten in order of frequency. Excel , of course, allows for
re-ordering the log by any category. I keep it in chronological order of
the reception dates as the default.

I do not link to anything outside of the spreadsheet, though it would be
cool to do so, especially recordings or TV photos. I'm afraid that such
a

project must wait for my next life. I'd have to trawl through miles of
casette tapes, recoirding them to computer sound files, and then figuring
out how to link them. If I had started from scratch linking recordings
to

the log that would have been much easier. But my DXing began 20 years
before I owned a computer.

Here's how I set up Excel columns for MW:

1.RECORD NUMBER (this is, in effect, the chronological order)

2.QSL(one star means "sent:", two stars means "barely verified",
three stars "mostly verified", four stars "fully verified", special
suffix
in this column is T = taped. In the FM log the additional suffix of S =
RDS

Decoder screenshot is used. In the TV log there are separate columns for
QSL and PHOTO, Q = sent and QSL = received. "PHO" means good photo,
"pho"
means I'd love to have a better photo than the snowy one I've got! By
the

way I use a slip in photo album for TV, the top spot on each page is the
photo, and the bottom spot is the QSL. This album is organized in
channel

order.

CHANNEL/FREQUENCY (In the TV log there is also an offset column and now
an
additional column for the false channel. e.g. WGRZ is received on channel
33

but still brands itself as channel 2.

CALL LETTERS (call changes are also listed as separate entries, in
smaller

font and with italics)

COUNTRY (I use the ITU three letter country abbreviations)

STATE/PROVINCE

LOCALITY

ANTENNA AUTHORIZATION (Medium Wave only, D-1, U-3, etc)

DAY POWER(In the FM and TV log there is one POWER entry)

NIGHT POWER (In the FM and TV log there is also a HAAT entry)

DATE

TIME(Glenn would shudder, but I've always used ELT. I think UTC is
better, but I'd have to go back and convert thirty six years of times and
dates in 2400 entries to fix this)

COUNTY(I actually have a US counties map in which I color the
counties

received, so I like to know this information)

MILEAGE(mostly included on the FM and TV logs, not so much used in
the

MW log)

In the FM and TV logs there is also a column for MODE, e.g., Tr, Es, Ms,
2Es. In the FM log there is a column for PI CODES.

In the SW log there are a number of transmitter location unknown entries.
When the transmitter site is somewhat speculative I enter it in small
case.

There are many other things that could be added, like transmitter
coordinates (see previous comment about my next life), actual transmitter
location, network (this is included in the TV log), and additonal info
like

previous call letters, something about what I heard at the time or the
prevailing conditions.

My only other log book is for Newfoundland DXpeditions. This is somewhat
chaotic, in that I am still reviewing Perseus files from 2010 and 2011.

There's a Hebrew program on religion WCHP 760, but earlier in the afternoon.
Nothing in Arabic on their schedule.

Do you have any clip with speech? Nothing here in Finland today at 2330.
Was it for sure on 760 and not 756 or 765? I don't think Mukalla, Yemen
has been on 760 kHz for some years.

Hello To All,

A few evenings ago and also this evening at 23:50 UTC I have been
hearing a
station on 760 in what seems to be Arabic with mentions tonight of
Bahrain
and other other Arabic talk, it seems to peak and then eventually fade
away

even on the Kenwood R-5000 before any ID possible

I wonder if this could be Yemen or is it even active currently. EMWG
mentions a different time for operation. Any ideas are greatly
appreciated

Thanks

Re: [IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?

2012-04-28 Thread Jim Renfrew
There's an intersection about a quarter mile from my house where the car
radio gets overwhelmed by a strong noise. Sounds like a fluorescent light
next to the radio, both immersed in water, and it appears to be on all the
time day and night. I don't notice it at home. I don't know if it's the
power lines, or one of the two houses. But if I was dealing with that at
home I would definitely call the power company.

In my own house we have some dimmer lights that create absolute havoc with
whip antenna radios in the house, mostly when the dimming is engaged. At
full strength it's less noticeable. When I DX, I try to turn all of them
off, though it is mostly defeated by having a long coax out of the house to
reach the antennas.

Jim, this noise has been plaguing me as well. I scrolled through the
lower HF spectrum this morning and found strong, fairly wideband (10
+kHz) burbly QRN/QRM signals throughout the band from 2 - 7 MHz (didn't
look higher, but I've seen signals on 20 and 15 meters as well).

I find it loud on 4065kHz (among many other frequencies).

The last time I had a noise like this, I put my Ten-Tec 509 on
batteries, made a little loop, and went "sniffing" in the neighborhood.
I found a leaky power line spark gap about 300 meters from my house. It
was raucous and the noise had been reported by another ham about a mile
away. I called the local power company and they quickly fixed it.

So, if you and I are hearing the same crap, it ain't local. But, in the
next week or so, I am gonna shut off my house power to eliminate
anything in my house as a sourceand then I'll go "sniffing" in my
neighborhood which is sparsely populated (1 - 2 acre lots).

This interference appears o/a 7040kHza popular 40 meter frequency
for us QRP'ers. What pain.

Re: [IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?

2012-04-28 Thread Jim Renfrew
Sounds exactly like the problem I used to have when I lived in Rochester,
about one driveway's width from the neighbor on each side (2 apartments
each), and also near a another house behind the first with two apartments.
I could only DX sometime after eleven PM after the perpetrator went to bed.
I figured it was a leaky TV or a bad fluorescent. If you've got someone
above you that could be the source. Become friendly with your neighbors I
guess. I don't know if HD would cause such hash, but the analog set sure
did.

And the bad thing about a crowded neighborhood is that even if you find one
source, the next renter to come along may do the same.
