Re: [IRCA] Newfoundland too
High winds diverted John and I to Deer Lake after a failed landing attempt at St Johns. Arriving four hours later at St Johns left little time for auto travel and purchase of provisions. So Jean got a short wire from the house to the beach set up and that's all til tomorrow. Not much unusual heard. I'm whipped after waking up at 1:45 am to get to Toronto, so off to sleep. Zzzzz. [IRCA] FEB 27 0500-0600z feeding frenzy
Jim Renfrew, Holley NY Hi everyone, sorry for the multiple posts last night. All my roadrunner posts were proliferating as endless duplicate messages, and I still can't stop it. Roadrunner says, "not us", and Microsoft (Outlook) says "we no longer service XP owners (but we'll solve it for you for $99)", so I'm using Yahoo for the moment. I get e-mail fine, just can't send it out on Roadrunner. This was an incredible night, and lot of might-have-beens because my Perseus won't function with my new Windows 7 laptop. So these loggings were done the old fashioned way, by spinning the dial. FEB 27 0510z On getting Barry's tip (thanks!), and with my Kaz coax retrieved from the snow piles earlier in the day a quick run through the top of the band gave 1557 France (relog), 1575 I initially called this "Italy", but now I'm not so sure with such a pipeline into Spain. There were two stations on 1575 but when I went back there was barely anything. I've previously logged Spain and Italy on 1575. 1584 also had a signal - possibly much wanted Radio Ole, but on my return there wasn't much there. 0513z 1521 SPAIN SER Castello "Cadena SER" ID, // to web audio vis Delicast. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] One for the Books
FWIW, Randy, I have received QSLs properly filled out for 1530 and 1611, so I'd try again with a follow-up on your 1611. I can't give you a name or title because neither of thoese earlier cards was signed. I think they forwarded my recent showrtwave letter to one of the program people because I gave such detailed info about their Africa program. The signal wasn't in long enough to catch other details or an ID. When I looked up any affiliates of the show on 1580 . Two results only, both in the east. Further investigation revealed results for the those stations possible as follows: 1580 - WGYM - Hamonton, New Jersey 1000 watts days, a whopping 7 watts nights 1580 - WCCF - Punta Gorda, Florida 1.250 kw days , 110 watts nights It's likely the New Jersey station , much closer , however Florida stations drift in here quite often in the early mornings. It could be one of the two on daytime power as well. I'll keep an ear on that frequency in the next few days in hopes of catching it again with more details hopefully. Re: [IRCA] PEI DXing. was: Re: Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-31
In Newfoundland, the reach to East Asia is tough. The lay of the land is such that our antennas aim NE to Europe, and SE to Brazil. In 2010 we did well to East Asia (China, N. Korea, S. Korea, Russia, Taiwan and Japan on the Euro wire because the arctic is in darkness, but that also means the path is prone to auroral conditions. Those receptions appear about 0930-1030z in mid-November. We've also logged China in the evening, like 2300 or so, and that uses the darkness over Europe as sunrise approaches in East Asia. We have also had Taiwan and Korea that same way, Sri Lanka, and lots of India. I think Jean also got Thailand once. I don't believe we've had Japan that way. I don't believe we will have a Newfoundland team this fall, except for Allen in residence there, but I am still going through Perseus recordings from 2010 and 2011, so still the vicarious thrill. Do You Remember This? OUR BEST TO YOU Seems to be WPTF. It looks like they play old DJ programs on Sunday night. Jim Renfrew In a letter from Don Curtis, President of Curtis Media Group, The program was "Our Best to You." This program ran from late 1947 to early 1962 on WPTF. The Host was Jimmy Capps, a marvelous announcer and an even better person! He was inducted into the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in April 2001. Other members include Billy Graham, Edward R. Morrow, Kate Smith, William Friday, and others." Our Best to You" OBTY was originated by the late Jimmy Capps and aired nightly from 1O PM to Midnight. In addition to requests, Jimmy also read poetry. The program was the highest rated of all WPTF programs. No WPTF personality has ever been more Popular than Jimmy Capps. Jimmy died in 1967. We have a program on Sunday Nights and at 11 O'clock each Sunday night we still today play the traditional Jimmy Capps opening theme song (a song recorded by Eddie Howard entitled My Best to You) and still have Jimmy's voice on the air. As a tribute to Capps, the 11 PM hour of the WPTF Hall of Fame features nothing but love songs, and begins each week with the original theme sound in the voice of Jimmy Capps. From time to time the program features some of the readings of poetry by Jimmy Capps from the WPTF archives. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Closing in on WAV?
Haha - I have to WORK for every one of those tough receptions! Barry, very impressive - all ON? Wow, a big piece of terrirtory. Only missing three in NY? Now I'm tempted to measure that. Probably missing a bunch of graveyarders. Jim Renfrew Shouldn't that be HAV (or HAVT?), since "working" implies a two-way link? Anyway, this topic is an interesting one to me, since I've tried to "complete" some nearby states and provinces on the AM band. I did manage to complete VT a few years back, and I've also heard all of the AM stations in RI. I'm missing one station in NH, two each in CT and ME, and three each in MA and NY. On the Canuck side of the border, I've completed ON and PE (before their AM station count went to zero), and am missing one each in QC, NB and NS. Due to steadily rising noise levels, it's unlikely that I'll improve on these stats. :-( Barry -- Barry McLarnon VE3JF Ottawa, ON ___ The NRC AM mailing list Questions? ow...@nrcdxas.org Pre-orders for the 33rd AM Radio Log Now being accepted! Jim Renfrew, Holley NY SEP 32358 edt1490VTMiddlebury"Cruisin 93.7" = Addison VT FM station; NEW It took a long time to get my first VT station, and it finally turned up as 1390 WDOT Burlington at 9:55 in the morning in 1987. That was 13 years after I started DXing in Rochester, and how long it took to receive a signal from an adjacent state. WFAD is now VT #14. Interestingly, VT would probably be my best shot at logging an entire state, since it looks like there are only 20 MW stations there. If the 1590 was demonstrating horrible modulation, and slightly off frequency, then it might very well be WASB Borckport NY - I can see their tower from my front porch, and at night, too, with the red light on their tower. What a useless station. Lately they have been dominating 1520 (sic) when I drive through Brockport. Re: [IRCA] [Tvfmdx] How do you keep track of your DX Loggings for AM, FM etc?
I bought them thirty years ago at a a stationery shop in Rochester that no longer exists. The MW map has long ago fragmented into four sections and is quite dog-eared. The MW map is centered on Rochester and spreads outward. I've had to draw Canadian county lines by freehand north of the border. The FM map hs a big blotch centered on Rochester, and then a lot of white space until the skip zone is reached. US county maps are available on line, for sale I think, and I suppose you could cobble one together printing sections available on-line to make one large map-sized sheet. On an 8.5 x 11 sheet it would be too small. Another approach to this is grid squares, and these maps are availabel from the AARL. Jim Renfrew, Holley NY I use Excel spreadsheets for LW, MW, FM, TV and SW. When I shifted to Excel for my MW logs, it was many weeks of typing entries. Since I have lived in this area since 1976 there is no need to note my listening location. My logbooks previous to 1976 in other locations were handwritten in order of frequency. Excel , of course, allows for re-ordering the log by any category. I keep it in chronological order of the reception dates as the default. I do not link to anything outside of the spreadsheet, though it would be cool to do so, especially recordings or TV photos. I'm afraid that such a project must wait for my next life. I'd have to trawl through miles of casette tapes, recoirding them to computer sound files, and then figuring out how to link them. If I had started from scratch linking recordings to the log that would have been much easier. But my DXing began 20 years before I owned a computer. Here's how I set up Excel columns for MW: 1.RECORD NUMBER (this is, in effect, the chronological order) 2.QSL(one star means "sent:", two stars means "barely verified", three stars "mostly verified", four stars "fully verified", special suffix in this column is T = taped. In the FM log the additional suffix of S = RDS Decoder screenshot is used. In the TV log there are separate columns for QSL and PHOTO, Q = sent and QSL = received. "PHO" means good photo, "pho" means I'd love to have a better photo than the snowy one I've got! By the way I use a slip in photo album for TV, the top spot on each page is the photo, and the bottom spot is the QSL. This album is organized in channel order. CHANNEL/FREQUENCY (In the TV log there is also an offset column and now an additional column for the false channel. e.g. WGRZ is received on channel 33 but still brands itself as channel 2. CALL LETTERS (call changes are also listed as separate entries, in smaller font and with italics) COUNTRY (I use the ITU three letter country abbreviations) STATE/PROVINCE LOCALITY ANTENNA AUTHORIZATION (Medium Wave only, D-1, U-3, etc) DAY POWER(In the FM and TV log there is one POWER entry) NIGHT POWER (In the FM and TV log there is also a HAAT entry) DATE TIME(Glenn would shudder, but I've always used ELT. I think UTC is better, but I'd have to go back and convert thirty six years of times and dates in 2400 entries to fix this) COUNTY(I actually have a US counties map in which I color the counties received, so I like to know this information) MILEAGE(mostly included on the FM and TV logs, not so much used in the MW log) In the FM and TV logs there is also a column for MODE, e.g., Tr, Es, Ms, 2Es. In the FM log there is a column for PI CODES. In the SW log there are a number of transmitter location unknown entries. When the transmitter site is somewhat speculative I enter it in small case. There are many other things that could be added, like transmitter coordinates (see previous comment about my next life), actual transmitter location, network (this is included in the TV log), and additonal info like previous call letters, something about what I heard at the time or the prevailing conditions. My only other log book is for Newfoundland DXpeditions. This is somewhat chaotic, in that I am still reviewing Perseus files from 2010 and 2011. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http:/
Re: [IRCA] [Tvfmdx] How do you keep track of your DX Loggings for AM, FM etc?
Re: [IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?
There's an intersection about a quarter mile from my house where the car radio gets overwhelmed by a strong noise. Sounds like a fluorescent light next to the radio, both immersed in water, and it appears to be on all the time day and night. I don't notice it at home. I don't know if it's the power lines, or one of the two houses. But if I was dealing with that at home I would definitely call the power company. In my own house we have some dimmer lights that create absolute havoc with whip antenna radios in the house, mostly when the dimming is engaged. At full strength it's less noticeable. When I DX, I try to turn all of them off, though it is mostly defeated by having a long coax out of the house to reach the antennas. Jim, this noise has been plaguing me as well. I scrolled through the lower HF spectrum this morning and found strong, fairly wideband (10 +kHz) burbly QRN/QRM signals throughout the band from 2 - 7 MHz (didn't look higher, but I've seen signals on 20 and 15 meters as well). I find it loud on 4065kHz (among many other frequencies). The last time I had a noise like this, I put my Ten-Tec 509 on batteries, made a little loop, and went "sniffing" in the neighborhood. I found a leaky power line spark gap about 300 meters from my house. It was raucous and the noise had been reported by another ham about a mile away. I called the local power company and they quickly fixed it. So, if you and I are hearing the same crap, it ain't local. But, in the next week or so, I am gonna shut off my house power to eliminate anything in my house as a sourceand then I'll go "sniffing" in my neighborhood which is sparsely populated (1 - 2 acre lots). This interference appears o/a 7040kHza popular 40 meter frequency for us QRP'ers. What pain. The AM broadcast band seems to be affected the least, 80 meters suffers a little, but every other band from 40 through 10 meters is affected at different levels. I have tried some rudimentary methods to try and isolate it but without success. I'm not even sure if it is atmospheric (i.e., coming through my antenna) or through the AC line (mains). My antenna is a G5RV Jr. in an inverted "V" configuration. I am in an older house, 2-story in a residential neighborhood of Memphis, on essentially a zero line lot. I can supply the exact address if anyone wants to see the house on Google maps street views. There are renters upstairs. I have limited equipment available for isolating the problem, and even less technical knowledge. I'd really appreciate any suggestions for solving this problem that now produces QRN at an S-9 level. I haven't called the local power company yet, but don't hold out much hope for help from them. Thanks very much. Re: [IRCA] QRN problem - any ideas?
Sounds exactly like the problem I used to have when I lived in Rochester, about one driveway's width from the neighbor on each side (2 apartments each), and also near a another house behind the first with two apartments. I could only DX sometime after eleven PM after the perpetrator went to bed. I figured it was a leaky TV or a bad fluorescent. If you've got someone above you that could be the source. Become friendly with your neighbors I guess. I don't know if HD would cause such hash, but the analog set sure did. And the bad thing about a crowded neighborhood is that even if you find one source, the next renter to come along may do the same. A bit hard to be sleepy in gale-force winds while doing antenna work in the tundra. That antenna Neil is working on skirts a beach where the surf comes pounding in just behind the photographer.
