[IRCA] Today in Radio History

2007-08-20 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
To the group,

As I was driving into work this morning, WWJ 950
Detroit celebrated their own happy birthday wishes
today marking the anniversary of the first radio
broadcast on August 20, 1920 using the call sign of
"8MT".

Thank you David,

I am quite sure I heard them about a year and a half
ago. Listened for a whole hour, but did not hear, even
once, a station ID.

I get a real mixed bag of loggings on 1580, but oddly
enough, WWSJ in St. Johns Michigan has the distinction
of being the closest station to my home that I have
not yet logged.

Take care,

[IRCA] FCC Enforcement Letters

2007-08-13 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Although this happened to an FM station, it very well
could have been a MW station. From www.qrz.com

73 from Joe Miller, AB8YP, Troy, MI

ENFORCEMENT: PROPOSED $4000 FOR CONTEST RULES
VIOLATION

Hams are not the only ones hearing from the FCC
enforcement folks in recent days. The agency has
issued a $4000 Notice of Apparent Liability for
Monetary Forfeiture to Saga Communications of New
England, L.L.C. licensee of Station WAQY-FM in
Springfield, Massachusetts. The proposed fine comes
as a result of the stations failure to fully and
accurately disclose the material terms of the contest
and conduct the contest substantially as announced or
advertised. Bruce Tennent, K6PZW, reports:

--

The proposed fine is the result of a complaint from
Robert Naginewicz alleging that Saga failed to conduct
its contest involving the musical group Aerosmith,
which was broadcast by the station during the June
through July 2005 period. According to Naginewicz, on
July 17, 2005, he won the contest's "Grand Prize
Giveaway," the prizes for which included a free
two-year lease on a 2005 Buick LaCrosse automobile, or
its cash equivalent, from the co-sponsor, Bob Pion
Pontiac. Also, the cars trunk was supposed to be
loaded full of Aerosmith memorabilia.

Naginewicz alleges that although he was assured by the
station's staff that all of his prizes would be
delivered to him by July 22, 2005, he did not receive
the monetary portion until August 18, 2005. Also,
despite numerous queries made of the station's staff,
as of December 31, 2005 he was still awaiting delivery
of the memorabilia portion.

Following up on the Naginewicz complaint, the
Enforcement Bureau by letter dated January 24, 2006,
inquired of Saga concerning these allegations. Saga
responded on March 2, 2006. It contended that its
one-month delay in delivering the monetary portion of
the prize, although less than ideal, was "within the
zone of reasonableness." It acknowledged, however,
that its failure to fulfill the memorabilia portion
until after Mr. Naginewicz had contacted the
Commission, represents a station "problem" that it
claims it has since addressed and resolved. Saga
indicated that, because of its delay in fulfilling
its promise to Mr. Naginewicz, it enhanced the award
made to him by contributing additional prizes.

But the FCC says that under Section 73.1216 of its
rules, a broadcast licensee must conduct
station-sponsored contests "substantially as announced
or advertised. Also that it must disclose fully and
accurately the "material terms" of such contests. And
the FCC says that it appears that Saga violated
Section 73.1216 of the Commission's rules by failing
to conduct the contest substantially as announced.
Therefore the proposed $4000 fine.

For the Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Bruce Tennent,
K6PZW, in Los Angeles.

Re: [IRCA] Minneapolis St. Paul recent events

2007-08-06 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Thank you David and Bruce,

I probably heard both KDWB & KRSI - I was only 15 then
and very much into Top 40 Radio then. But it's funny
that KSTP is the only one I remember. WCCO doesn't
count as they were a clear channel station and easily
heard in Michigan.

And funny you should mention Hubert Humphrey. The
building where the convention was held was one of the
first buildings constructed as part of Twin Cities
Urban Renewal. Vice President Humphrey was scheduled
to be the guest speaker, but was not able to make it.

[IRCA] Minneapolis St. Paul recent events

2007-08-03 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Hi everyone,

In 1967, I went with my parents and one of brothers to
a business convention in the Twin Cities, and stayed
at a hotel in the downtown area. Since we crossed the
Mississippi on I-94 going from St. Paul into
Minneapolis, as well as taking a drive around in the
St. Paul area on one of the afternoons off and seeing
many of the local sites, I probably saw the I-35W
bridge although it may well have still been under
construction at the time. I sure do feel for all of
the deceased as well as the injured.

But on the DX aspect, the only radio station that I
remember from my 2-3 days there was KSTP 1500. My
question is, does anyone out there remember what their
format was in 1967??? I'm thinking it was a Top 40
format station, but after 40 years

Thanks in advance and 73

Come to think of it, I was in Part 73 of the FCC code

I guess if it's included in an advertisement, then the

The one and only time that I ever tried to listen to

Do you know if this policy has changed at all?

Yes, you are right, it is Wattenberg (sp???). KDKA has
Dr. Knowledge with a very similar type program on
weekends, and he is a lot of fun to listen to. My
favorite episode was when he described the military

this was in a river, not the ocean...

Re: [IRCA] the passing of Pete Wilson

2007-07-23 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Thx Chris and the group, I appreciate the
clarification as well. I was out in Seattle Washington
and Orange County California in 2003 and listened to
KGO at night, but Bill Westenhaver (sp???) is the only
announcer that I remember listening to on KGO.

And as long as we're talking KGO, I believe this was
the station that WJR's J. P. McCarthy worked at in the
late 1950's, in between his two gigs at WJR. Of course
the second gig lasted for almost 35 years until his
death in 1995.

[IRCA] Article about local programming in Detroit

2007-07-21 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Greetings radio buddies,

The Detroit Free Press ran an interesting story this
morning about the efforts made by three local radio
stations to keep up their ratings during the weekends.

Good article, IMHO.

Yep, yep. Out of four requests made in the last year,
only one still hasn't responded. I think most beacon
ops like to know how far their signals can be heard.

Re: [IRCA] Part 15: an explanation (and loopholes?)

2007-07-19 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Mr. Taylor,

I agree with you. It's my understanding though that
the 100 mw is measured at a distance of 30 meters from
the antenna. Depending on the loss of signal strength,
output power at the antenna can be compensated.

On a side note, I know of a ham operator within
200-400 miles of me who took an old CB radio,
converted it to transmit on ten meters, and uses it
for a CW beacon with one watt of power. How far does
the signal go? I heard it from my home

Re: [IRCA] KXTO Test

2007-07-15 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Phil,

In my ever so humble opinion, I think you might very
well have heard KXTO. The QRSS signal was indeed Morse
Code but slowed down to where the dits were 10 seconds
long, and the dahs were 30 seconds. If the "buzz" is
at audio 2500 Hertz, and since you were pointing in
that direction. I know, this test was different, as
the normal audio may not have come through.

If in doubt, I would suggest sending the MP3 to Less
anyway.

Re: [IRCA] IBB Delano and Greenville

2007-07-11 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Thank you for taking the lead on this Dan. You are
absolutely correcto-mundo about the HF skip zones. Add
to that the ability of major shortwave broadcasters to
beam their transmissions in a fairly narrow pattern,
and voila, VOA Delano should be heard very well in
Cuba.

Lest we not forget that many VOA/RM broadcasts are
jammed, as well as propagation conditions changing
daily, it is important to transmit from different
locations, at different frequencies, and at different
times in order to get through.

I for one applaud the work that both you and Charles
Taylor have done for our country.

Some of the Radio Marti transmissions (on shortwave)

[IRCA] WJR

2007-07-11 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Hello everybody,

Checked WJR again tonight, and no signs of IBOC.

WABC 770 was coming in quite well.

WSB 750 is still a little mystery. No whistle tonight
like last time, but still a strange sounding QRM.
Tried both LSB and USB and although their carrier is
present, just no or very weak audio. This is very
unusual for them considering that sometimes I have
even heard them by groundwave during the daytime at a
distance of about 750 miles.

P.S. no more reports from me on this unless something changes.

Well, Bob Coomler, Bob Young, yourself, and yours
truly make four of us that interested. As I see it, we
don't have to talk techincal stuff all the time

interesting and/or DX QSOs, etc. should keep us pretty
busy.

I'll update the others, submit a request, and we'll

[IRCA] WJR 760 IBOC progress report

2007-07-09 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Hello Scott, Patrick, and the group,

Sadly, I was tired after painting all day yesterday,
and was unable to hear WJR with IBOC at night.

I did try tonight with three different radios on
Sunday evening and here is what I heard:

RCA RCD180 (a CD boombox with a surprisingly good AM
   tuner)
740 CHWO - fairly strong signal, listenable quality
   750 QRM from undetermined source
760 WJR - good but noisy signal for 50kW at 35 mls
770 WABC - good signal, quite audible
780 WBBM - good signal, quite audible

Grundig Satellit 800 Millenium
Virtually same results as the RCA RCD180

Sony ICF-2010 with Radio Shack loop antenna
740 CHWO - strong signal, very listenable quality
750 WSB - heard stn ID but with QRM from
undetermined source at about 752 kHz whistle
   like sound
760 WJR - what you would expect for 50kW at 35 mls
770 WABC - very good signal, quite audible
780 WBBM - very good signal, quite audible

Will continue to monitor this in the days ahead.

[IRCA] Open question

2007-07-05 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP

I love DXing as much as anyone on this list. LW, MW,
SW, VHF, UHF, all of it.

But my question is, does IRCA have an amateur radio
e-mail list? And if not, is there any interest in
starting one?

The ARRL is very good, but not conducive to a round
table discussion. QRZ.com is very round table, but the
discussion often strays away from the subject matter.

In short, my thoughts are simple. The hams can talk
about amateur radio without going off-topic and
subsequently boring the non-hams.

Is there any interest in this? I would be interested
in hearing what others think.

73 and best wishes to all.

Mike,

> isn't it?

Yep, you are right. When field strength is measured in
mv's per square meter, then it is the INVERSE square
law. If mv's are measured per meter, then it is just
the inverse reduction (straight line as us accountants
would say).

As I am thinking about all of this, I believe the
inverse square law would apply to isotropic radiators,
the so-called 'perfect antenna' that transmits evenly
in all directions. But in the real world, almost all
antennas have some sort of pattern (usually flat and
to a degree circular) and it is in this instance that
that the inverse reduction would occur.

Idon't have the meausrement tools, but I would guess
that for 100 mv at 30 meters would be roughly 1 watt
at the source.

Thank you for challenging me on this one, there are
always new concepts to learn with radios.

I have only heard 3 or 4 in the last 10 years, and
none since the City of Rochester Hills implemented
their TIS/HAR station a couple of years ago.

The most distant talking house measured out at 1.9-2.0

car radio, the range was only about 3 blocks.

Bob is correct, they are "lamps" and not "bulbs".
After skimming over the article on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp
CFLs do use mercury.

I guess the trade-off is between longer life and less
power usage versus less complicated manufacturing
process, lack of RFI, lack of Mercury, lesser cost.

Count me in with incandescent users.

Thank you for sharing.

[IRCA] Kenwood Purported to Merge with JVC in 2008

2007-06-30 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
==> Kenwood Purported to Merge with JVC in 2008

A consumer electronic magazine, This Week in Consumer
Electronics (TWICE), reports that Kenwood has agreed
to merge in 2008 with Victor Company of Japan (JVC)
under a holding company. JVC is owned by Matsushita
Electric Industrial Company. Japan's Nikkei business
newspaper reports that the final details should be
worked out by the end of the month, and that under
the plan, Kenwood will buy 20 billion
yen($161,469,466) in JVC shares as early as this
summer,
raising its stake to 13 percent. Matsushita will also
sell part of its 52.7 percent of JVC to Kenwood's top
shareholder, the Sparx Group. When JVC and Kenwood
integrate operations under the holding company in
2008, Matsushita will sell the rest of its JVC shares
to the holding company to complete the transaction.
The holding company's stock will be listed instead of
Kenwood and JVC, according to Nikkei. Combined,
Kenwood's and JVC's sales are $7.3 billion dollars
annually for their fiscal year that ended March 31.

[IRCA] CHWO off air

2007-06-27 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP

--- Brian Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> CHWO - AM 740 will be off the air from midnight

I managed to stay awake for this planned shutdown this
morning. At 2 or 3 minutes before midnight, CHWO
announced the outage scheduled between 12:00 and 4:00
am. Yet the music continued along with station ID's
until 12:30 when the signal abruptly ended.

Although three or perhaps four stations could be
heard, at best I could only get snippets of each.

To the south was a talker that sounded like Savage
Nation discussing immigration reform.

To the southeast was Spanish speaking station and in
the jumble, all that I could make out was "este
es...".

To the west was a station playing music. Many of the
songs could not be identified, they did play Billy
Joel's "Piano Man" at 01:15 EDT.

The possibly fourth station in the mix was what
sounded like country music.

Even though I did not have luck identifying these new
stations, I would like to thank Brian Smith for giving
us the opportunity.

About 6 or 7 years ago when CBL shut down and before
CHWO started broadcasting, I did manage to hear the
station in Humboldt Tennessee (WIRJ???), but I see
they are now listed 16 nighttime watts.

visit at www.wqsn.com will show the only minor league
games that they carry are for the Kalamazoo Kings of
the Frontier Baseball League.

If they carry ESPN coverage of minor league games on
completion of the local game, I did not see it on
their website.

P.S. This station is only 150 miles from my house, but
it is one of 4 or 5 stations that is semi-regularly
heard.

Hope this helps

Hi all,

I could only manage to hear the WNJC Stn ID in Morse

I am dead tired after 10 hours at Field Day, otherwise
I would stay up for more.

[IRCA] Logging

2007-06-23 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Last night was rather strange in that there was
virtually no DX, no shortwave, no pirates, no
amateurs, no FM (tropo is somewhat common in the Great
Lakes), and the MW band was full of noise. With said,
I did hear:

WKYO, 1360, Caro, Mich. 0130(UTC) 6/23/07. Country
music including the classic "Put another log on the
fire", local ads abd station ID at TOH. Not new but
rare.

Unid. 1060, 0155-0200(UTC) 6/23/07. Talk format
station heard under KYW when loop antenna was pointing
due west. Could not get an ID but I suspect this was
WHFB Nenton Harbor/St. Joseph Michigan.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Please accept my resignation.

2007-06-22 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Hi Les,

Although I have only been on the NRC list for a little
over a year now, and the IRCA list for few months, I
am very sorry that things got to this point. My first
choice would be that you reconsider the resignation.
But if you still choose to resign, I understand, as I
have been in situations like this and I know what
you're going through.

Further, I thought you did a great job as the
broadcast test coordinator, as these DX tests allowed
me to log and verify states never imaginable
otherwise.

Best wishes for continued success,

[IRCA] WKY stunting clip contest clues

2007-06-19 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Ok, ok, this is a little tougher than I thought it
would be.

The second quote occurs after the "dogs and kids" and
was used in one of his films from the 1930's. Not a
signature statement of Bill Fields, but one that was
repeated quite a few times in this movie.

The correct answer can be found on the Internet Movie
Data Base

I don't think I ever would have come up with the same
wording on this as you have, but I agree with what you
are saying, for several reasons.

By observation only, it appears to me that WJR in
particular is feeding more of their nighttime
transmissions into skywave than groundwave. For years,
I can drive two hours out of town in any direction and
their signal becomes quite unusable. Yet driving back
from my father-in-law's funeral in Denver, we had a
nice WJR signal to hear halfway across Nebraska.

So I'm thinking if the conditions are right, their
first skip lands in the Atlantic Ocean, then the salt
water propagation takes over, I can see it being done.

Funny back in the 1960's, WJR used to read letters
received from out of state listeners (Texas was very
common), but never recall them reading letters from
Bermuda.

Thank you for the info.

P.S. If this isn't what you meant, I apologize. This
is the first time I've heard this idea.

P.P.S. 15 meter band was open yesterday afternoon.

Re: [IRCA] Re IRCA 38-54-3 German?

2007-06-15 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Hi Maria,

That is very interesting. 3 of my grandparents grew up
in the U.S. (Michigan & Pennsylvania) but spoke German
within the household. But all of their parents
insisted that the children must learn English in
school.

I sometimes feel that I am Dutch by assimulation as
there are a large number of both Germans and Dutch
here in Michigan, particularly on the west side of the
state. Listening to shortwave radio for 40 years, I
can listen to Dutch or German language programs and
generally understand the content, but I get in trouble
if I am asked to speak in either language.

I am very happy to see you on our list, and I wish you
the best.

P.S. Our family name actually was Müller but in the
mittelfrankendeutsch dialect, it was pronounced Miller
so we went with pronunciation instead of written.

Hi Patrick

I don't have the space to install any beverage
antennas and have next to no experience with them
other that through study materials.

Do you terminate your bevs with say a 470 Ohm resistor
and several small radials where the opposite end is
attached to the grounding rod?

Thank you in advance.

Mr. Charles,

I know you mean very well, as you are meticulous about
your postings, about how they written as well the
format. On my end, I have had some difficulties
reading them at first, mostly because Y&H** takes 72
character lines and converts them into 55 character
lines, and I get some strange looking formatting.

But that's not the only weird thing that Y&H** does
with formatting, so please don't feel compelled to
make any changes.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI-1600's Underwhelming Signal

2007-06-04 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP

To Patrick, Chuck, Paul, and the group

Even though I am a Midwesterner with next to no chance
of ever logging KOHI from home, nor from Seattle
during my stay there for a few days in 2003, I still
read each and every e-mail with great interest.

Setting up my amateur radio station during the last
few weeks has taught me a lot about soil conditions,
propagation, antennas, radials, test equipment, etc.

There have been a couple of times where I have had to
explain exactly how I picked up a distant signal in
order to get a verification from the Chief Engineer.
Granted not everyone on this list is ham, but I still
think it's in everyone's best interest to learn as
much as possible to make the most out of this hobby.

Thx for taking the time to read my 2 cents worth.

Re: [IRCA] OT, First ever QSO

2007-06-03 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP

Bob, Bert, Chris, and the group

I had a nice opening on 15 meters this afternoon, and
QSOed with stations in Massachusetts, Alabama, and
some guy named Chris in Taylors SC. All three were
made using 100 watts, SSB, with a portable stick
antenna with radials and were reported at S-7.

Hopefully, now that we are getting this out of the
way, we can do the IRCA Net as we've been discussing.
I can't wait.

Here's another one that came in from the ARRL e-mail
today:

Long-time Dayton-goers will remember ogling the
original Voice of America station in West Chester, OH
not far from Cincinnati. While the big towers are
gone, the transmitter building is still there and
the facility is now a park and museum. A volunteer
group (http://www.veteransvoa.com) maintains the site,
including the active radio club WC8VOA. Tours are
given during the Hamvention every year, so you might
want to leave a little time for this stop next year.

2 possibilities

Less likely: WRFD 880 Columbus Ohio now with daytime
23 KWs. Haven't heard this station since they moved
from Fremont Ohio. IBOC status is not known to me.

More likely: WFDF 910 Farmington Hills. Transmitter is
in Carelton Michigan (Monroe County) and is about 40
miles from my home. With daytime 50 KWs, taking up two
adjacent channels (on each side) is much more
probable.

Hope this helps, Scott

[IRCA] Dayton Hamvention

2007-05-20 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP

To the group,

Just spent a full two days at the Dayton Hamvention
and it was a blast!

They had a booth doing a live radio broadcast on 1610
kHz using the ID "Information Radio". I saw and heard
one of the representatives of WinRadio explaining
their products.

One of approx. 2,500 flea market vendors, one had a
bronze building sign from WMAQ Radio in Chicago.
Asking $1,000.

Did see a few classic MW radios for sale but I didn't
inquire.

Unfortunately, had very little time for BCB DXing.
Whatcha gonna do????

Re: [IRCA] WA STATE TIS/HAR INFO

2007-05-11 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
PLEASE read the [IRCA] mailing list guidelines at
http://www.ircaonline.org/guidelines.htm

There's a pair of TIS/HARs at the Mackinac Bridge in
Michigan. One of the bridge transmits at 530, the
other end at 1610. Obviously not syncronized, but they
are parallels.

Also, from what I understand about synchronizers (and
I heard this at my last amateur radio club meeting)
they run about $20K for each site. But in mountainous
areas, I can see where they are necessity.

Thx for sharing,

I have no experience with Eton E1, but after having
both the ICF-2010 and Grundig Satellit 800, I agree
especially on FM performance.

I have 160 stations logged with the Grundig as the
whip antenna is quite directional. The Sony is not as
senstive, but also generates a signal at 21.4 MHz
below the main signal which can be heard in the
Japanese FM part of the band.

On MW performance, the Grundig is good, but I'll still
take ICF-2010 as it responds especially well to
directional loop antennas.

Just my 2 cents, thx for listening...

Re: [IRCA] WKRC in Cincinnati

2007-05-05 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
I agree with you Bill in BC. My first logging of them
was in 1975 when I lived in Lansing Michigan. I sent
them a reception report and they responded that mine
was they received since recently changing their
antenna pattern. I believe this predated the WKRP TV
Program by a year or two.

I also have a post card from the late 1920's picturing
WKRC in a hotel building with two towers and a
horizontal dipole antenna with their call sign letters
hanging from the antenna wire. Now you that's old, hi.
